Quantum Beats And Coherence Decay In Degenerate States Split By Solvation, Lev Chuntonov, Daniel G. Kuroda, Ayanjeet Ghosh, Jianqiang Ma, Robin M. Hochstrasser Jun 2013

Quantum Beats And Coherence Decay In Degenerate States Split By Solvation, Lev Chuntonov, Daniel G. Kuroda, Ayanjeet Ghosh, Jianqiang Ma, Robin M. Hochstrasser

Faculty Publications

Coherent dynamics of degenerate quantum states symmetry-broken on the femtosecond time scale is found to exhibit the phenomenon of quantum beats. Frequency-resolved and polarization-selective heterodyned transient grating spectroscopy enabled us to retrieve the oscillation pattern characteristic of the beating in systems undergoing ultrafast dynamical processes. This methodology applies to the general phenomena of coherence dynamics, which is important in any ultrafast multidimensional spectroscopy. A particular application to the vibrational spectroscopy of coherence in the degenerate normal modes of the tricyanomethanide anion solvated in water is explored in this study. The relaxation of the cross-polarization transient grating anisotropy is shown to …

Identification And Characterization Of Rare Variants In Cholinergic Nicotinic Receptor Genes And Their Contribution To Substance Dependence, Gabriel Emanuel Haller Jun 2013

Identification And Characterization Of Rare Variants In Cholinergic Nicotinic Receptor Genes And Their Contribution To Substance Dependence, Gabriel Emanuel Haller

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Genome-wide association studies: GWAS) have identified common variation in the CHRNA5-CHRNA3-CHRNB4 and CHRNA6-CHRNB3 gene clusters that contribute to nicotine dependence. However, the role of rare variation in risk for substance dependence in these nicotinic receptor genes has not been studied.

In order to investigate the role rare variants play in the development of nicotine dependence, we undertook pooled sequencing of the coding regions and flanking sequence of the CHRNA5, CHRNA3, CHRNB4, CHRNA6 and CHRNB3 genes in 710 African Americans: 461 nicotine dependent: ND) cases and 249 smokers with no symptoms of dependence: controls)) and 2055 European Americans: 1062 ND cases …

The epichloae (Epichloë and Neotyphodium species), a monophyletic group of fungi in the family Clavicipitaceae, are systemic symbionts of cool-season grasses (Poaceae subfamily Poöideae). Most epichloae are vertically transmitted in seeds (endophytes), and most produce alkaloids that attack nervous systems of potential herbivores. These protective metabolites include ergot alkaloids and indole-diterpenes (tremorgens), which are active in vertebrate systems, and lolines and peramine, which are more specific against invertebrates. Several Epichloë species have been described which are sexual and capable of horizontal transmission, and most are vertically transmissible also. Asexual epichloae are mainly or exclusively vertically transmitted, and many are …

Spatially Selective Surface Platforms For Binding Fibrinogen Prepared By Particle Lithography With Organosilanes, Lauren E. Englade-Franklin, Cha Marra K. Saner, Jayne C. Garno Jun 2013

Spatially Selective Surface Platforms For Binding Fibrinogen Prepared By Particle Lithography With Organosilanes, Lauren E. Englade-Franklin, Cha Marra K. Saner, Jayne C. Garno

Faculty Publications

We introduce an approach based on particle lithography to prepare spatially selective surface platforms of organosilanes that are suitable for nanoscale studies of protein binding. Particle lithography was applied for patterning fibrinogen, a plasma protein that has a major role in the clotting cascade for blood coagulation and wound healing. Surface nanopatterns of mercaptosilanes were designed as sites for the attachment of fibrinogen within a protein-resistant matrix of 2-[methoxy(polyethyleneoxy)propyl] trichlorosilane (PEG-silane). Preparing site-selective surfaces was problematic in our studies, because of the self-reactive properties of PEG-organosilanes. Certain organosilanes presenting hydroxyl head groups will cross react to form mixed surface multi-layers. …

Juvenile Hormone And Insulin Regulate Trehalose Homeostasis In The Red Flour Beetle, Tribolium Castaneum, Jingjing Xu, Zhentao Sheng, Subba R. Palli

Entomology Faculty Publications

Insulin/IGF-1 signaling (IIS) has been well studied for its role in the control of life span extension and resistance to a variety of stresses. The Drosophila melanogaster insulin-like receptor (InR) mutant showed extended life span due to reduced juvenile hormone (JH) levels. However, little is known about the mechanism of cross talk between IIS and JH in regulation of life span extension and resistance to starvation. In the current study, we investigated the role of IIS and JH signaling in regulation of resistance to starvation. Reduction in JH biosynthesis, JH action, or insulin-like peptide 2 (ILP2) syntheses by RNA interference …

Body condition is an indicator of health, and it plays a key role in many vital processes for mammalian species. While evidence of individual body condition can be obtained, these observations provide just brief glimpses into the health state of the animal. An analytical framework is needed for understanding how health of animals changes over space and time.Through knowledge of individual health we can better understand the status of populations. This is particularly important in endangered species, where the consequences of disruption of critical biological functions can push groups of animals rapidly toward extinction. Here we built a state-space model …

Lost In The Margins? Intersections Between Disability And Other Non-Dominant Statuses With Regard To Peer Victimization And Psychosocial Distress Among Oregon Teens, Marjorie Grace Mcgee Jun 2013

Lost In The Margins? Intersections Between Disability And Other Non-Dominant Statuses With Regard To Peer Victimization And Psychosocial Distress Among Oregon Teens, Marjorie Grace Mcgee

Dissertations and Theses

Youth with disabilities experience greater levels of victimization than non-disabled youth. However, little is known about the associations between peer victimization and disability status alone and in combination with sex and race/ethnicity, or with sex and sexual orientation. Further, little is known about the extent to which exposure to peer victimization mediates the relationship between disability status and psychosocial distress. Thus, one purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which disability status, as a marker of social difference, alone and in combination with other social identities, is associated with differential levels of exposure to peer victimization. A …

Service-Learning Partnerships : 'A Springboard' For Enhanced Experiential Learning And Transformation, Betsy Selvakumar, Mary Pearl Ravikumar Jun 2013

Service-Learning Partnerships : 'A Springboard' For Enhanced Experiential Learning And Transformation, Betsy Selvakumar, Mary Pearl Ravikumar

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Service learning is a teaching pedagogy wherein a student participates in a thoughtfully organised community based programme, with an academic orientation. This technique helps to enhance classroom teaching- learning experience, as the student strives to meet the need of the community. Service learning experience can be enriched by building effective partnerships with community based organisations. SL serves as a platform to support locally established initiatives of governmental and non-governmental organisations without displacing existing workers. For the institution that offers SL and the staff coordinating the programme, it is a meaningful exercise to thoughtfully consider potential partners who could assist in …

Responding To Communities’ Information Needs : Community-Based Research As Service-Learning, Timothy K. Stanton, Viria Vichit-Vadakan Jun 2013

Responding To Communities’ Information Needs : Community-Based Research As Service-Learning, Timothy K. Stanton, Viria Vichit-Vadakan

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Most practitioners conceive of service-learning as combining student involvement in service-oriented tasks with and for communities with structured educational activities designed to develop their knowledge, character, and/or social skills and capacities. Whatever the goals for students these tasks tend to be of a direct service kind – e.g., tutoring, teaching classes, assisting the elderly, environmental clean-up, etc. Occasionally these tasks will also include administrative or public policy-related work. Rarely, however, does service-learning venture into the realm of research. This interactive workshop will explore the goals, background, characteristics, and current practices of research as a form of service-learning, including its benefits …

The Importance Of Service-Leadership In Higher Education, Po Yang Chung

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

93% of Hong Kong’s GDP is generated by the service industry, which also provides employment for 88% of the total working population of the territory. If you are not making a living through farming, fishing, hunting, mining, manufacturing or repetitive processing, chances are that you are in the service industry. In other words, unless tertiary students intend to take up a non-service job (and be among the remaining 12% of the working population), then service is likely to be their future.

Services are carried out and led by people. Service leaders are and will therefore be in great demand. The …

An Experimental Investigation Of The Relationship Between Hoarding And Stress, Ashley M. Shaw Jun 2013

An Experimental Investigation Of The Relationship Between Hoarding And Stress, Ashley M. Shaw

Open Access Theses

Hoarding is an impairing disorder characterized by difficulties with discarding one’s belongings and often excessive acquisition, which lead to extreme clutter. Of the hypothesized risk and maintenance factors for hoarding, stress has emerged as an important risk construct. Traumatic and stressful life events have been associated with greater hoarding symptoms and possibly the onset of symptoms; yet, past research is marked by methodological limitations. Using experimental methodology and multi-method assessments, the current study investigated the direct effect of a stress manipulation on subsequent hoarding behaviors; the associations of biological and subjective stress response with hoarding behaviors, symptoms, and cognitions; and …

Control Of Invasive Typha Spp. In A Restored Freshwater Wetland, Kathryn Boa Jun 2013

Control Of Invasive Typha Spp. In A Restored Freshwater Wetland, Kathryn Boa

Theses

Wetlands are critically important habitats that provide many ecosystem services but loss and degradation of wetland habitat and functions has led to the growing need to create and restore functionally sound wetlands. In temperate climates, Typha spp. are an invasive plant genus that is problematic for mitigation efforts as it spreads quickly and aggressively into disturbed habitats and creates monotypic stands with dense rhizomes that are difficult to eradicate. Control is most often attempted through mechanical cutting or application of herbicide. In this study I surveyed four mitigation wetland vegetation communities in two years to determine species distribution and change …

Microbial Communities In Pre-Columbian Coprolites, Tasha M. Santiago-Rodriguez, Yvonne M. Narganes-Storde, Luis Chanlatte, Edwin Crespo-Torres, Gary A. Toranzos, Rafael Jiménez-Flores, Alice Hamrick, Raul J. Cano

Biological Sciences

The study of coprolites from earlier cultures represents a great opportunity to study an “unaltered” composition of the intestinal microbiota. To test this, pre-Columbian coprolites from two cultures, the Huecoid and Saladoid, were evaluated for the presence of DNA, proteins and lipids by cytochemical staining, human and/or dog-specific Bacteroides spp. by PCR, as well as bacteria, fungi and archaea using Terminal Restriction Fragment analyses. DNA, proteins and lipids, and human-specific Bacteroides DNA were detected in all coprolites. Multidimensional scaling analyses resulted in spatial arrangements of microbial profiles by culture, further supported by cluster analysis and ANOSIM. Differences between the microbial …

Bacterial Spores Remain Viable After Electrospray Charging And Desolvation, Sara Nielson Pratt Jun 2013

Bacterial Spores Remain Viable After Electrospray Charging And Desolvation, Sara Nielson Pratt

Theses and Dissertations

The electrospray survivability of B. subtilis spores and E. coli was tested in atmospheric mobility experiments. E. coli did not survive electrospray charging and desolvation, but B. subtilis did. Experimental conditions ensured that any surviving bacteria were charged, desolvated, and de-agglomerated. B. subtilis was also found to survive both positive and negative electrospray and subsequent introduction into vacuum conditions. Attempts were made to measure the charge distribution of viable B. subtilis spores using electrostatic deflection. From those experiments, it was found that either the spores do not become highly charged under the electrospray conditions used or only spores in a …

Poly(N-Isopropylacrylamide)-Based Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering Applications, Pamela Kubinski Jun 2013

Poly(N-Isopropylacrylamide)-Based Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering Applications, Pamela Kubinski

Theses and Dissertations

The primary goal of this work is to investigate the potential of poly(Nisopropylacrylamide)- based scaffolds in tissue engineering applications, specifically spinal injury and nucleus pulposus replacement. Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), denoted PNIPAAm, is a synthetic polymer with hydrophilic properties at room temperature, but above 32C the chains become hydrophobic and entangle to form physical crosslinks. This thermoresponsive property enables PNIPAAm to be implanted as a free-flowing solution at room temperature and collapse into a gel in physiological conditions. However, as a homopolymer, the hydrophobicity of PNIPAAm in vivo causes the hydrogel to expel water and exhibit inelastic properties that do not mimic those …
