Inhibition Of Fast Axonal Transport By Pathogenic Sod1 Involves Activation Of P38 Map Kinase, Gerardo Morfini, Daryl Bosco, Hannah Brown, Rodolfo Gatto, Agnieszka Kaminska, Yuyu Song, Ashutosh Tiwari, Et. Al. Jun 2013

Inhibition Of Fast Axonal Transport By Pathogenic Sod1 Involves Activation Of P38 Map Kinase, Gerardo Morfini, Daryl Bosco, Hannah Brown, Rodolfo Gatto, Agnieszka Kaminska, Yuyu Song, Ashutosh Tiwari, Et. Al.

Department of Chemistry Publications

Dying-back degeneration of motor neuron axons represents an established feature of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (FALS) associated with superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) mutations, but axon-autonomous effects of pathogenic SOD1 remained undefined. Characteristics of motor neurons affected in FALS include abnormal kinase activation, aberrant neurofilament phosphorylation, and fast axonal transport (FAT) deficits, but functional relationships among these pathogenic events were unclear. Experiments in isolated squid axoplasm reveal that FALS-related SOD1 mutant polypeptides inhibit FAT through a mechanism involving a p38 mitogen activated protein kinase pathway. Mutant SOD1 activated neuronal p38 in mouse spinal cord, neuroblastoma cells and squid axoplasm. Active p38 …

Activity Determinants Of Helical Antimicrobial Peptides: A Large-Scale Computational Study, Yi He, Themis Lazaridis Jun 2013

Activity Determinants Of Helical Antimicrobial Peptides: A Large-Scale Computational Study, Yi He, Themis Lazaridis

Publications and Research

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), produced by a wide range of organisms, have attracted attention due to their potential use as novel antibiotics. The majority of these peptides are cationic and are thought to function by permeabilizing the bacterial membrane, either by making pores or by dissolving it (‘carpet’ model). A key hypothesis in the literature is that antimicrobial and hemolytic activity correlate with binding affinity to anionic and zwitterionic membranes, respectively. Here we test this hypothesis by using binding free energy data collected from the literature and theoretical binding energies calculated from implicit membrane models for 53 helical AMPs. We indeed …

Utilizing Maxent To Improve And Explain A Species Distribution Model For Freshwater Mussel Species In East Texas, Kirian Bregan Heffentrager Jun 2013

Utilizing Maxent To Improve And Explain A Species Distribution Model For Freshwater Mussel Species In East Texas, Kirian Bregan Heffentrager

Biology Theses

One of the greatest challenges in landscape ecology has been determining the degree to which landscape level environmental characteristics effect the distribution of freshwater mussels. Freshwater mussels have long been regarded as valuable indicators of lotic system health because they are often the first organisms to exhibit a response to changes in their environment. Understanding distributional patterns of mussels is consequently a valuable conservation and management tool. Here, I evaluated the improvement of predictive modeling software by applying MAXENT to the distributions of two freshwater mussel species, the Texas Pigtoe (Fusconia askewi), a state threatened species, and the Rock Pocketbook …

Assessing Insecticide Hazard To Bumble Bees Foraging On Flowering Weeds In Treated Lawns, Jonathan L. Larson, Carl T. Redmond, Daniel A. Potter Jun 2013

Assessing Insecticide Hazard To Bumble Bees Foraging On Flowering Weeds In Treated Lawns, Jonathan L. Larson, Carl T. Redmond, Daniel A. Potter

Entomology Faculty Publications

Maintaining bee-friendly habitats in cities and suburbs can help conserve the vital pollination services of declining bee populations. Despite label precautions not to apply them to blooming plants, neonicotinoids and other residual systemic insecticides may be applied for preventive control of lawn insect pests when spring-flowering weeds are present. Dietary exposure to neonicotinoids adversely affects bees, but the extent of hazard from field usage is controversial. We exposed colonies of the bumble bee Bombus impatiens to turf with blooming white clover that had been treated with clothianidin, a neonicotinoid, or with chlorantraniliprole, the first anthranilic diamide labeled for use on …

Kenneth Burke As Educator: What His Theories Of Aesthetic Form And (Non-Symbolic) Motion/(Symbolic) Action Suggest For Teachers In The Literature Classroom, Tara Brock Boyce Jun 2013

Kenneth Burke As Educator: What His Theories Of Aesthetic Form And (Non-Symbolic) Motion/(Symbolic) Action Suggest For Teachers In The Literature Classroom, Tara Brock Boyce

Theses and Dissertations

Burke scholars oftentimes overlook Burke's fundamental role as educator and how his work can and should be applied to the classroom. This paper explores Burke's theoretical works and centers on two concepts important to developing rhetorical skills necessary for functioning and participating in a democratic society: his theory of aesthetic form and his distinction between motion and action. Specifically, this paper (1) clarifies these concepts and explains how they relate to each other and the emotional experience of literature, and (2) demonstrates how these concepts work together to imply a new method of practicing rhetorical criticism in the literature classroom …

Pharmacy Faculty/Staff Publications

Objectives. To examine changes in preprofessional pharmacy curricular requirements and trends, and determine rationales for and implications of modifications.

Methods. Prerequisite curricular requirements compiled between 2006 and 2011 from all doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) programs approved by the Accreditation Council of Pharmacy Education were reviewed to ascertain trends over the past 5 years. An online survey was conducted of 20 programs that required either 3 years of prerequisite courses or a bachelor’s degree, and a random sample of 20 programs that required 2 years of prerequisites. Standardized telephone interviews were then conducted with representatives of 9 programs.

Results. In 2006, …

Promoter Polymorphisms In Interferon Regulatory Factor 5, Daniel N. Clark Jun 2013

Promoter Polymorphisms In Interferon Regulatory Factor 5, Daniel N. Clark

Theses and Dissertations

The promoter region of interferon regulatory factor 5 (IRF5) contains the rs2004640 T or G single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and a CGGGG indel. Both of these polymorphisms have been implicated as genetic risk factors for several autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus, whose pathology involves altered apoptosis and cytokine signaling. The polymorphisms' overall effect is to increase IRF5 levels. IRF5 is a transcription factor of several cytokines, including interferon, and is pro-apoptotic. Thus an alteration of cytokine levels and apoptosis signaling due to high IRF5 levels is the proposed source of autoimmune risk. Each of IRF5's four first exons (1A, …

Impact Of Self-Fertilization On Fecundity, The Timing Of First Reproduction, And Population Genetic Structure: Is A Mate Worth The Wait?, Serena Caplins Jun 2013

Impact Of Self-Fertilization On Fecundity, The Timing Of First Reproduction, And Population Genetic Structure: Is A Mate Worth The Wait?, Serena Caplins

Theses and Dissertations

Organisms capable of self-fertilization typically exhibit two evolutionary syndromes uniting high inbreeding depression with low levels of selfing, or low inbreeding depression and high levels of selfing. This study tests for inbreeding depression in an apparent self-compatible, hermaphroditic marine nemertean worm, Prosorhochmus americanus. Fecundity and timing to first reproduction were assessed in isolated and paired worms. Isolated worms produced significantly more offspring than paired worms and did not show inbreeding avoidance. The selfing rate of natural populations was evaluated using species-specific microsatellites and is consistent with preferential selfing (mean: 0.801), though some outcrossing appears to take place. Population genetic structure …

Horizontal Transmission Of Metarhizium Anisopliae In Fruit Flies And Effect Of Fungal Infection On Egg Laying And Fertility, Susan Dimbi, Nguya K. Maniania, Sunday Ekesi

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Fly-to-fly transmission of conidia of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae and the effect of fungal infection on the reproductive potential of females surviving infection were investigated in three fruit fly species, Ceratitis cosyra, C. fasciventris, and C. capitata. The number of conidia picked up by a single fruit fly was determined in C. cosyra. The initial uptake (Day 0) of conidia by a single fly was approx. 1.1 × 106 conidia after exposure to the treated substrate. However, the number of conidia dropped from 7.2 × 105 to 4.1 × 105 conidia after 2 and 8 h post-exposure, respectively. The …

A Mindful Environmental Jurisprudence?: Speculations On The Application Of Gandhi’S Thought To Mcwc V. Nestlé, Nehal A. Patel, Lauren Vella

Pace Environmental Law Review

We attempt to engage modern legal reasoning with Gandhi’s thought. We hope to speculate on what jurisprudence would look like if it were more mindful of the concepts central to Gandhi’s thought. By using Gandhi as an intellectual anchor, we hope to take a step toward creating a more “mindful jurisprudence” that implicitly incorporates into its reasoning the needs of environmental stewardship, disempowered populations, and the poverty-stricken. Because Gandhi’s thought has been discussed at length in environmental justice campaigns, we begin this effort by examining the relationship between environmental law and Gandhi’s thought. Given Gandhi’s commentaries on exploitative and oppressive …

Cyanide, Mining, And The Environment, Jan G. Laitos Jun 2013

Cyanide, Mining, And The Environment, Jan G. Laitos

Pace Environmental Law Review

The Article is not intended to serve as an advocacy polemic for the cyanide-using mining industry. Rather, its objective is two-fold: (1) It seeks to expose the scientific and environmental reality of cyanide use in mining operations; and (2) It will try to draw from the case of mining-and-cyanide use some larger lessons about regulatory behavior, and the downside of over-regulation when confronting the phenomenon of risk amplification. Part II considers why cyanide is so ubiquitous in hard rock mining operations in America and in other countries, and why there is no effective substitute for it as a substance to …

Problems For Pale Male: An Analysis Of The U.S. Fish And Wildlife Service’S Nest Destruction Policy, Brent Plater, Nicole Lopez-Hagan, Laura Horton

Pace Environmental Law Review

During the 2004 holiday season, Pale Male, New York City’s celebrated and world-renowned red-tailed hawk, had his nest deliberately destroyed. The nest was approximately 400-pounds and was built over several years. Almost immediately, this act of destruction was met with popular uproar among his many fans throughout the world. This tragic story could easily have been avoided if the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) had correctly carried out its duties under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA). What happened to Pale Male years ago is still a possibility today because the Service’s policy remains the same. This article …
