A Comprehensive And Integrative Reconstruction Of Evolutionary History For Anomura (Crustacea: Decapoda)., Heather D Bracken-Grissom, Maren E Cannon, Patricia Cabezas, Rodney M Feldmann, Carrie E Schweitzer, Shane T Ahyong, Darryl L Felder, Rafael Lemaitre, Keith A Crandall

Computational Biology Institute

BACKGROUND: The infraorder Anomura has long captivated the attention of evolutionary biologists due to its impressive morphological diversity and ecological adaptations. To date, 2500 extant species have been described but phylogenetic relationships at high taxonomic levels remain unresolved. Here, we reconstruct the evolutionary history-phylogeny, divergence times, character evolution and diversification-of this speciose clade. For this purpose, we sequenced two mitochondrial (16S and 12S) and three nuclear (H3, 18S and 28S) markers for 19 of the 20 extant families, using traditional Sanger and next-generation 454 sequencing methods. Molecular data were combined with 156 morphological characters in order to estimate the largest …

Non-Additive Effects On Decomposition From Mixing Litter Of The Invasive Mikania Micrantha H.B.K. With Native Plants, Bao Ming Chen, Shao Lin Peng, Carla M. D'Antonio, Dai Jiang Li, Wen Tao Ren Jun 2013

Non-Additive Effects On Decomposition From Mixing Litter Of The Invasive Mikania Micrantha H.B.K. With Native Plants, Bao Ming Chen, Shao Lin Peng, Carla M. D'Antonio, Dai Jiang Li, Wen Tao Ren

Faculty Publications

A common hypothesis to explain the effect of litter mixing is based on the difference in litter N content between mixed species. Although many studies have shown that litter of invasive non-native plants typically has higher N content than that of native plants in the communities they invade, there has been surprisingly little study of mixing effects during plant invasions. We address this question in south China where Mikania micrantha H.B.K., a non-native vine, with high litter N content, has invaded many forested ecosystems. We were specifically interested in whether this invader accelerated decomposition and how the strength of the …

[1] Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrogen (DON), and phosphorus (DOP) were measured monthly at the CARIACO Time Series station (10°30′N, 64°40′W) in the southeastern Caribbean Sea between 2005 and 2012. Marked seasonal variability in DOC concentrations was observed, with lower values (~66 µM) in the upper water column (<75 >m) during the upwelling season (December–April) due to the injection of cool, DOC‐impoverished Subtropical Underwater from the Caribbean Sea. During the rainy season (May–November) waters were stratified and upper layer DOC concentrations increased to ~71 µM. Interannual variability in surface (1 m) concentrations of DOC was also observed in response to …

Understory Diversity And Succession On Coarse Woody Debris In A Coastal, Old-Growth Forest, Oregon, Shannon Lee Mcdonald Jun 2013

Understory Diversity And Succession On Coarse Woody Debris In A Coastal, Old-Growth Forest, Oregon, Shannon Lee Mcdonald

Dissertations and Theses

This research examines the relationship between understory plant diversity and logs in a Pacific Northwest (PNW) Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis)-western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) old-growth, coastal forest. These forests are renowned for their high forest productivity, frequent wind storms, and slow log decomposition rates that produce unmatched accumulations of coarse woody debris (CWD) yet few studies have examined the relationship between CWD and understory vegetation ecology. My research addressed this topic by comparing understory plant census data between paired fallen log and forest floor sites (n=20 pairs). My objectives were to: 1) determine the influence of substrate type on community composition …

A Systems Biology Approach For Understanding Inflammation In The Gastrointestinal Tract Of A Crohn’S Patient, Gigi Meyer Jun 2013

A Systems Biology Approach For Understanding Inflammation In The Gastrointestinal Tract Of A Crohn’S Patient, Gigi Meyer

Theses and Dissertations

A system of ordinary differential equations is developed to model the effect of fatty acids on chronic intestinal inflammation that is typical of a Crohn’s patient. Several murine studies have shown an anti-inflammatory response when specific polyunsaturated fatty acids are included regularly in the diet. It is believed that the fatty acids serve as a specific ligand that activates the Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptor (PPAR) which is located on multiple cell types that are active in the inflammatory response. The binding of the PPAR results in a suppression of the inflammatory pathway. Results of the model indicate a muted inflammatory …

The Versatility Of Ether-Bridged Cycloadducts Towards The Synthesis Of Complex Natural Products, Harold Deshaun Cooper Jun 2013

The Versatility Of Ether-Bridged Cycloadducts Towards The Synthesis Of Complex Natural Products, Harold Deshaun Cooper

Doctoral Dissertations

The presence of a heterocyclic moiety can be observed in many of today’s bioactive natural products. One of the most commonly observed is furan, an aromatic five-membered ring containing an oxygen atom. Furan is a simple compound, yet versatile enough to be used as a synthetic synthon leading to complex structures such as the antioxidant Phelligridin G and the antibacterial agent Platensimycin. In the former, it is spiro-fused to the five-membered carbocycle of the 6-5-5 tricyclic domain while in the latter it makes up the ether-bridged cycloadduct of the hydrophobic cage. Conventionally, furan can undergo cycloadditions in the presence of …

Following the treatment, the participants completed an online survey and a vocabulary application test. Results from a 2 x 2 factorial ANOVA indicated that adults …

Kierkegaard And A Pedagogy Of Liminality, Sylvia Mcmillan Jun 2013

Kierkegaard And A Pedagogy Of Liminality, Sylvia Mcmillan

Theses and Dissertations

There is a strain of curriculum theory especially since the reconceptionalist movement that applies existential philosophy to educational issues and questions. There is also a related branch of curriculum theory that looks especially at existentialist theology to cast light on curriculum issues from a more religious slant. Both of these strains of analysis are rooted in Kierkegaard, the father of existentialism and existential theology (Huebner, 1999; Tillich, 1948). The educational implications of the works of Kierkegaard are a subject that has been virtually unexamined in either educational or Kierkegaardian scholarship except by two scholars whose works are already 40 years …

Queer! Narratives Of Gendered Sexuality: A Journey In Identity, Kym Bradley Jun 2013

Queer! Narratives Of Gendered Sexuality: A Journey In Identity, Kym Bradley

Dissertations and Theses

My project looks at current conceptualizations of identity relating to gender and sexuality in order to understand how queer individuals enact gender as connected to their non-normative sexuality. I will use the notion of "desire" through Butler's (1990) notion of performativity as a part of iterability that reproduces an opposition between what is intended and how it is perceived. This approach creates space to problematize the status of identities that posits the conception of fluidity and dialectic as attached to notions of gendered sexualities - the understanding that sexuality interacts with gender and that these two notions are not compartmentalized. …

The Use Of Music As A Pedagogical Tool In Higher Education Sociology Courses: Faculty Member Perspectives And Potential Barriers, Jerry C.L. Loveless Jun 2013

The Use Of Music As A Pedagogical Tool In Higher Education Sociology Courses: Faculty Member Perspectives And Potential Barriers, Jerry C.L. Loveless

Dissertations and Theses

Previous research has identified student engagement as an important antecedent to student learning in higher education. Although student engagement is viewed as important for learning, a significant number of college students still report frequently feeling bored in their courses. The use of music as a pedagogical tool is believed to be beneficial for promoting student engagement and student learning in higher education sociology courses, yet it has been suggested that sociology faculty members do not commonly incorporate the technique into their courses. The purpose of this comparative interview study is to explore higher education sociology faculty members' understandings of the …

Spectroscopic Investigation Of Intra- And Intermolecular Interactions Of Donor-Acceptor Pi-Systems, Edward Adjaye-Mensah Jun 2013

Spectroscopic Investigation Of Intra- And Intermolecular Interactions Of Donor-Acceptor Pi-Systems, Edward Adjaye-Mensah

Open Access Dissertations

The use of fluorophores for specific applications is determined to a large extent by their optical and electronic properties. These properties, however, are controlled by their sensitivity to microenvironment as well as their intra- and intermolecular interactions. This research effort explores how molecular interactions affect the optoelectronic properties of selected fluorophores and, thus, guides their use as fluorescent probes or photoactive materials in organic electronic applications. A combined spectroscopic and computational approaches was utilized in the first part to examine the photophysical properties of two different classes of probes: the highly responsive multisensing 4,6-diphenylpyrimidones and 4-[2-(6-hydroxy-2-naphthalenyl)-ethenyl]-1-methyl-pyridinium (HNEP+) and its deprotonated …

Love In A Time Of Trauma: Imagining Queer Female Sexualities In Post-Apartheid South Africa, Stephanie M. Selvick Jun 2013

Love In A Time Of Trauma: Imagining Queer Female Sexualities In Post-Apartheid South Africa, Stephanie M. Selvick

Open Access Dissertations

My dissertation analyzes competing discourses of sexuality in contemporary South Africa, and contributes to a much-needed nascent critical conversation engaging postcolonial studies, African studies, and sexuality studies. South Africa’s 1996 constitution is celebrated as the most progressive in the world in terms of gender and sexuality, but this legal achievement is belied by the on-going, much-publicized rape crisis -- including the “corrective” rape of lesbians. This crisis has occurred in the context of an AIDS epidemic and government denial of the increase of both rape and AIDS. I argue that authors and artists respond to this crisis by representing stigmatized …

Trial Designs That Simultaneously Optimize The Population Enrolled And The Treatment Allocation Probabilities, Brandon S. Luber, Michael Rosenblum, Antoine Chambaz Jun 2013

Trial Designs That Simultaneously Optimize The Population Enrolled And The Treatment Allocation Probabilities, Brandon S. Luber, Michael Rosenblum, Antoine Chambaz

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Standard randomized trials may have lower than desired power when the treatment effect is only strong in certain subpopulations. This may occur, for example, in populations with varying disease severities or when subpopulations carry distinct biomarkers and only those who are biomarker positive respond to treatment. To address such situations, we develop a new trial design that combines two types of preplanned rules for updating how the trial is conducted based on data accrued during the trial. The aim is a design with greater overall power and that can better determine subpopulation specific treatment effects, while maintaining strong control of …

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: Renin–angiotensin system (RAS) regulates adipogenic response with adipocyte hypertrophy by increasing oxidative stress. Recent studies have shown the role of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-d (PPARδ) agonist in attenuation of angiotensin II-induced oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to explore a potential mechanistic link between PPARδ and the cytoprotective enzyme heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and to elucidate the contribution of HO-1 to the adipocyte regulatory effects of PPARδ agonism in an animal model of enhanced RAS, the Goldblatt 2 kidney 1 clip (2K1C) model.

METHOD: We first established a direct stimulatory effect of the PPARδ agonist (GW 501516) on …

Methods For Quantifying T Cell Receptor Binding Affinities And Thermodynamics, Kurt H. Piepenbrink, Brian E. Gloor, Kathryn M. Armstrong, Brian M. Baker Jun 2013

Methods For Quantifying T Cell Receptor Binding Affinities And Thermodynamics, Kurt H. Piepenbrink, Brian E. Gloor, Kathryn M. Armstrong, Brian M. Baker

Food for Health: Publications

αβ T cell receptors (TCRs) recognize peptide antigens bound and presented by class I or class II major histocompatibility complex (MHC) proteins. Recognition of a peptide/MHC complex is required for initiation and propagation of a cellular immune response, as well as the development and maintenance of the T cell repertoire. Here we discuss methods to quantify the affinities and thermodynamics of interactions between soluble ectodomains of TCRs and their peptide/MHC ligands, focusing on titration calorimetry, surface plasmon resonance, and fluorescence anisotropy. As TCRs typically bind ligand with weak-to-moderate affinities, we focus the discussion on means to enhance the accuracy and …
