Optical Characterization Of Optofluidic Waveguides Using Scattered Light Imaging, Micah Jenkins, Dr. Aaron Hawkins Jun 2013

Optical Characterization Of Optofluidic Waveguides Using Scattered Light Imaging, Micah Jenkins, Dr. Aaron Hawkins

Journal of Undergraduate Research

One exciting field of research within optics involves using on chip optical waveguides as biological sensors. Dr. Aaron Hawkins and his team of students have worked to develop a platform for bio-sensing using ARROW’s (anti-resonant reflecting optical waveguides) to confine light to a hollow core channel. These devices are filled with sample solutions and can be used to detect changes in optical transmission as fluorescently tagged particles traverse the hollow core channel.

Tapered Photoresist In The Manufacture Of Nanosieves, Meagan Bracken, Dr. Aaron Hawkins

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of this project was to assist in the manufacturing of nanosieves. The device is designed to separates nano-size particles from the fluid substance in which they are contained. An example of this, and one of the main targets of this project, is the separation of HDL and LDL cholesterol particles from a sample of blood. This goal of separating cholesterol has many benefits to the medical world. By creating a method to characterize HDL cholesterol sizes and concentrations we can monitor a person’s risk for heart disease. Because cholesterol particles have this important attribute of size characterization, it …

Family Matters: Operationalization Of Intergenerational Educational Background, Elizabeth Warnick Jun 2013

Family Matters: Operationalization Of Intergenerational Educational Background, Elizabeth Warnick

Theses and Dissertations

This study seeks to replicate and extend Roksa and Potter's (2011) analysis of the association between intergenerational family background and academic outcomes by utilizing the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 to examine alternative methods for operationalizing maternal educational background. Results indicate a positive association between maternal upward mobility and adolescent academic achievement. Measures of mobility affect adolescent achievement even when controlling for both mother's and maternal grandmother's educational attainment. Future research should examine the differential impact of extreme mobility, specifically downward mobility, on adolescent academic outcomes.

Imdb Network Revisited: Unveiling Fractal And Modular Properties From A Typical Small-World Network, Lazaros K. Gallos, Fabricio Q. Potiguar, José S. Andrade, Hernan A. Makse

Publications and Research

We study a subset of the movie collaboration network, http://www.imdb.com, where only adult movies are included. We show that there are many benefits in using such a network, which can serve as a prototype for studying social interactions. We find that the strength of links, i.e., how many times two actors have collaborated with each other, is an important factor that can significantly influence the network topology. We see that when we link all actors in the same movie with each other, the network becomes small-world, lacking a proper modular structure. On the other hand, by imposing a threshold on …

Identification Of Multiple Levels Of Trauma Induced Coagulopathy, Jason Newton Jun 2013

Identification Of Multiple Levels Of Trauma Induced Coagulopathy, Jason Newton

Theses and Dissertations

Trauma continues to be a major cause of death across the globe. While the exact causes of trauma differ greatly between the military and civilian lifestyles, the ability to stop bleeding after trauma is paramount for survival. Over the past decade coagulation research has transitioned from a classical understanding of plasma based protein coagulation to the current cell focused research. As part of this shift, platelets have become a central player in hemostasis. Unfortunately little is currently understood about how platelet function is affected by trauma. In an effort to better define platelet function during trauma and the resulting shock …

Cellular Automata In Cryptographic Random Generators, Jason Spencer Jun 2013

Cellular Automata In Cryptographic Random Generators, Jason Spencer

Technical Reports

Cryptographic schemes using one-dimensional, three-neighbor cellular automata as a primitive have been put forth since at least 1985. Early results showed good statistical pseudorandomness, and the simplicity of their construction made them a natural candidate for use in cryptographic applications. Since those early days of cellular automata, research in the field of cryptography has developed a set of tools which allow designers to prove a particular scheme to be as hard as solving an instance of a well-studied problem, suggesting a level of security for the scheme. However, little or no literature is available on whether these cellular automata can …

Exploration Of The Low-Molecular Weight Proteome Of Tissue And Serum, With Applications To Disease Biomarker Discovery, Meihwa Tanielle Alvarez Jun 2013

Exploration Of The Low-Molecular Weight Proteome Of Tissue And Serum, With Applications To Disease Biomarker Discovery, Meihwa Tanielle Alvarez

Theses and Dissertations

The low-molecular weight proteome is of great interest due to the vast number of smaller proteins and peptides present within it, some of which are likely to be disease-related and may provide insights into disease mechanisms or even prediction and diagnosis. Serum is often the most preferred specimen for disease prediction or diagnosis, as it can be obtained less-invasively and its collection is fairly routine in a clinical setting. Although serum samples are one of the most preferred specimens for disease studies, additional disease information may also be obtained using other specimens, such as tissue. The study of tissue specimens …

Physiology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: There is no effective therapeutic intervention developed targeting cerebrovascular toxicity of drugs of abuse, including methamphetamine (METH). We hypothesize that exercise protects against METH-induced disruption of the blood--brain barrier (BBB) by enhancing the antioxidant capacity of cerebral microvessels and modulating caveolae-associated signaling. Mice were subjected to voluntary wheel running for 5 weeks resembling the voluntary pattern of human exercise, followed by injection with METH (10 mg/kg). The frequency, duration, and intensity of each running session were monitored for each mouse via a direct data link to a computer and the running data are analyzed by Clock labTM Analysis software. …

Selective Nanoparticles For Antimicrobial Therapies And Mri Diagnostics, Mark Andrew Hoppens

LSU Master's Theses

Early diagnosis and treatment of an infection and the selectivity of the treatment method are three parameters, which if optimized will greatly enhance a patient’s prognosis. Thus these three components have been, and continue to be extensively studied. Advances in biosynthesis and nanofabriciation have provided researchers with new tools with which to improve diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. Of these, inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) have shown great promise. Metallic nanoparticles have been demonstrated to successfully serve as antimicrobials, platforms for the transportation of therapeutic molecules, CT and MRI contrast agents, and thermal ablation. The recent paradigm of theranostics proposes substances that serve …

Exploring Colour And Light As Dynamic Elements Of Space Through The Activities Of An International Workshop, Nada El-Khoury, Tiiu Poldma Jun 2013

Exploring Colour And Light As Dynamic Elements Of Space Through The Activities Of An International Workshop, Nada El-Khoury, Tiiu Poldma

Learn X Design Conference Series

The ephemeral qualities of lighting are explored best as part of lived experiences. For students at the baccalaureate level, this is difficult and requires developing ideas that become realized through modelling by studying what happens when light, colour and material intersect with form. This process uses design thinking and hands-on experiences to show students how a dynamic interplay of design elements within a project occurs through learning and discussion. While creative processes require some form of abstract thinking and when ephemeral qualities aspects of light and colour contribute to the purpose for a particular use, the material aspects of a …

Neuromolecular Imaging Shows Temporal Synchrony Patterns Between Serotonin And Movement Within Neuronal Motor Circuits In The Brain, Patricia A. Broderick

Publications and Research

The present discourse links the electrical and chemical properties of the brain with neurotransmitters and movement behaviors to further elucidate strategies to diagnose and treat brain disease. Neuromolecular imaging (NMI), based on electrochemical principles, is used to detect serotonin in nerve terminals (dorsal and ventral striata) and somatodendrites (ventral tegmentum) of reward/motor mesocorticolimbic and nigrostriatal brain circuits. Neuronal release of serotonin is detected at the same time and in the same animal, freely moving and unrestrained, while open-field behaviors are monitored via infrared photobeams. The purpose is to emphasize the unique ability of NMI and the BRODERICK PROBE® biosensors to …

Effects Of Flow Rates And Composition Of The Filter, And Decay/Ingrowth Correction Factors Involved With The Determination Of In Situ Particulate 210po And 210pb In Seawater, Mark Baskaran, Thomas Church, Gi Hong, Anupam Kumar, Ma Qiang, Hiu Choi, Sylvain Rigaud, Kanchan Maiti

Faculty Publications

Accurate measurements of particulate 210Po (210Pop) and 210Pb (210Pbpp) are required in the investigation of (i) partitioning of Po and Pb between particulate and dissolved phases and (ii) export estimates of carbon and other key trace metals from the euphotic zone via sinking particulate matter. Based on the intercomparison of different composition of the filter material (QMA, Supor, Millipore, and Pall GN6) and flow rates (2 to 8 L min), we show how these factors affect the measured concentrations of 210Pop and 210Pbpp and their activity ratios (AR). As such, we recommend …

Phase Retrieval Using Power Measurements, Jamal Arif Jun 2013

Phase Retrieval Using Power Measurements, Jamal Arif

Theses

Optical signals have two basic components that are power and phase, which can be demonstrated in both time and frequency domains. The common diagnostics which are available in the market only measure power component in time or frequency domain. However in certain areas phase measurements are also required. The phase retrieval techniques are used to calculate phase measurements from different methods. There are a number of applications where phase measurements are required like astronomy, wavefront sensing technique (James Webb space telescope), x-ray crystallography, fiber optic telecommunications etc. Various phase retrieval algorithms have been used in retrieving phase measurements in temporal …

Functional Integration Of The Conserved Domains Of Shoc2 Scaffold, Myoungkun Jeoung, Lina Abdelmoti, Eun Ryoung Jang, Craig W. Vander Kooi, Emilia Galperin

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Shoc2 is a positive regulator of signaling to extracellular signal-regulated protein kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2). Shoc2 is also proposed to interact with RAS and Raf-1 in order to accelerate ERK1/2 activity. To understand the mechanisms by which Shoc2 regulates ERK1/2 activation by the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), we dissected the role of Shoc2 structural domains in binding to its signaling partners and its role in regulating ERK1/2 activity. Shoc2 is comprised of two main domains: the 21 leucine rich repeats (LRRs) core and the N-terminal non-LRR domain. We demonstrated that the N-terminal domain mediates Shoc2 binding to both …

Reconceiving A Necessary Evil: Teaching A Transferable Fyc Research Paper, Samuel James Dunn Jun 2013

Reconceiving A Necessary Evil: Teaching A Transferable Fyc Research Paper, Samuel James Dunn

Theses and Dissertations

The place of the research paper in first-year composition (FYC) courses is often debated in composition forums. Many argue that the a-disciplinary nature of FYC doesn't allow instructors to teach the research paper in a way that will be transferable to disciplinary writing tasks, while others say that it is possible, as long as we have a thorough understanding of the kinds of writing tasks students will face in the disciplines and specifically teach writing skills that will be transferable. To identify these more generalizable writing skills to be emphasized, I interviewed 14 professors at Brigham Young University from different …

A Simple And Computationally Efficient Approach To Multifactor Dimensionality Reduction Analysis Of Gene-Gene Interactions For Quantitative Traits, Jiang Gui, Jason H. Moore, Scott M. Williams, Peter Andrews, Hillege, Hans L. Hillege, Hans L., Pim Van Der Harst, Gerjan| Navis, Wiek H. Van Gilst, Folkert W. Asselbergs, Diane| Gilbert-Diamond

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present an extension of the two-class multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR) algorithm that enables detection and characterization of epistatic SNP-SNP interactions in the context of a quantitative trait. The proposed Quantitative MDR (QMDR) method handles continuous data by modifying MDR’s constructive induction algorithm to use a T-test. QMDR replaces the balanced accuracy metric with a T-test statistic as the score to determine the best interaction model. We used a simulation to identify the empirical distribution of QMDR’s testing score. We then applied QMDR to genetic data from the ongoing prospective Prevention of Renal and Vascular End-Stage Disease (PREVEND) study.

Articles

The majority of outer membrane (OM) lipoproteins in Gram-negative bacteria are tethered to the membrane via an attached lipid moiety and oriented facing in toward the periplasmic space; a few lipoproteins have been shown to be surface exposed. The outer membrane lipoprotein P6 from the Gram-negative pathogenic bacterium nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is surface exposed and a leading vaccine candidate for prevention of NTHi infections. However, we recently found that P6 is not a transmembrane protein as previously thought (L. V. Michel, B. Kalmeta, M. McCreary, J. Snyder, P. Craig, M. E. Pichichero, Vaccine 29:1624–1627, 2011). Here we pursued studies …

Extending Single Molecule Fluorescence Observation Time By Amplitude-Modulated Excitation, Lydia Kisley Jun 2013

Extending Single Molecule Fluorescence Observation Time By Amplitude-Modulated Excitation, Lydia Kisley

Faculty Scholarship

We present a hardware-based method that can improve single molecule fluorophore observation time by up to 1500% and super-localization by 47% for the experimental conditions used. The excitation was modulated using an acousto-optic modulator (AOM) synchronized to the data acquisition and inherent data conversion time of the detector. The observation time and precision in super-localization of four commonly used fluorophores were compared under modulated and traditional continuous excitation, including direct total internal reflectance excitation of Alexa 555 and Cy3, non-radiative Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) excited Cy5, and direct epi-fluorescence wide field excitation of Rhodamine 6G. The proposed amplitude-modulated excitation …
