Characterization Of Active Compounds Produced In The Biotransformation Of Metabolites In Kombucha Tea, Katherine Seehusen, Mallory Villeneuve, Francis Mann
Student Research and Creative Projects 2013-2014
Kombucha is a fermented black tea that has been hypothesized to provide many health benefits. The exact origin of these benefits, however, is continually being investigated. This study aims to identify the various active compound produced in the biotransformation of the metabolites during the fermentation process of the tea beverage, as well as quantify functions such as antioxidant capacity. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic liquid-liquid extractions were performed on a filtered sample of GT’s Organic Raw Kombucha® using acetonitrile and ethyl acetate. Ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) assays were run on both the Kombucha tea and the extracts to determine their antioxidant capacity. …

Open Innovation In Plant Genetic Resources For Food And Agriculture, Chidi Oguamanam
Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property
Contemporary global order for the promotion of innovation exaggerates the role of intellectual property (IP) as a closed proprietary model of knowledge production and protection. Partly as a boomerang effect of that order or partly as a coincidence of the phenomenal rise in the information and communication technologies or both, there has been increased gravitation toward open, collaborative, shared, communal and interdependent models of innovation. This trend is typified by the rise of open software movement and cognate endeavours. The article attempts to transpose the open innovation dynamic to the context of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGFA); …

Report Card On Sustainable Natural Resource Use In Agriculture : Status And Trend In The Agricultural Areas Of The South-West Of Western Australia, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia
Books & book chapters
This report card summarises our current knowledge of the status and trend in the natural resource base in the agricultural areas of the south-west of Western Australia (WA) and provides a discussion of the implications for agricultural industries.
The condition of our natural resources is a complex interaction of numerous processes. In simple terms however, the performance of the land is driven by three primary factors: climate, land characteristics and land management. The first two factors are largely out of the control of land managers, and in a drying and variable climate, land management practices need to be able to …
For Nontraditional Names' Sake: A Call To Reform The Name-Change Process For Marrying Couples, Meegan Brooks
For Nontraditional Names' Sake: A Call To Reform The Name-Change Process For Marrying Couples, Meegan Brooks
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
In a large number of states, women are encouraged to take their husbands’ surnames at marriage by being offered an expedited name-change process that is shorter, less expensive, and less invasive than the statutory process that men must complete. If a couple instead decides to take an altogether-new name at marriage, the vast majority of states require that each spouse complete the longer statutory process. This name-change system emerged from a long history of naming as a way for men to dominate women. This Note emphasizes the need for name-change reform, arguing that the current system perpetuates antiquated patriarchal values …

Purpose: Noninfectious comorbidities such as cardiovascular diseases have become increasingly prevalent and occur earlier in life in persons with HIV infection. Despite the emerging body of literature linking environmental exposures to chronic disease outcomes in the general population, the impacts of environmental exposures have received little attention in HIV-infected population. The aim of this study is to investigate whether individuals living with HIV have elevated prevalence of heavy metals compared to non-HIV infected individuals in United States.
Methods: We used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003-2010 to compare exposures to heavy metals including cadmium, lead, and total …
Breaking The Ties: French Romantic Socialism And The Critique Of Liberal Slave Emancipation, Naomi J. Andrews
Breaking The Ties: French Romantic Socialism And The Critique Of Liberal Slave Emancipation, Naomi J. Andrews
History
In 1846, the romantic socialist Désiré Laverdant observed that although Great Britain had rightly broken the ties binding masters and slaves, “in delivering the slave from the yoke, it has thrown him, poor brute, into isolation and abandonment. Liberal Europe thinks it has finished its work because it has divided everyone.” Freeing the slaves, he thus suggested, was only the beginning of emancipation. Laverdant’s comment reflects a broader political conversation about the individual and society that was ongoing in France during the 1830s and 1840s in which the issues of colonial slavery, metropolitan wage labor, and imperial expansion in Algeria …

BACKGROUND: Rabies is traditionally considered a uniformly fatal disease after onset of clinical manifestations. However, increasing evidence indicates that non-lethal infection as well as recovery from flaccid paralysis and encephalitis occurs in laboratory animals as well as humans.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Non-lethal rabies infection in dogs experimentally infected with wild type dog rabies virus (RABV, wt DRV-Mexico) correlates with the presence of high level of virus neutralizing antibodies (VNA) in the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) and mild immune cell accumulation in the central nervous system (CNS). By contrast, dogs that succumbed to rabies showed only little or no VNA in the …

Design And Development Of A Low Cost Platform To Facilitate Post-Stroke Rehabilitation Of The Elbow/Shoulder Region, Stephen Curran
Design And Development Of A Low Cost Platform To Facilitate Post-Stroke Rehabilitation Of The Elbow/Shoulder Region, Stephen Curran
Masters
For post-stroke rehabilitation of the upper limbs, increased amounts of therapy are directly related to improved rehabilitation outcomes. As such, a low cost therapy platform is proposed suitable for facilitating active therapy and administering activeassist therapy to the shoulder/elbow region of the upper limbs of individuals post-stroke in a local clinic or domestic setting. Enabling a person to undergo intensive rehabilitation therapy outside of a rehabilitation hospital setting permits the amount of therapy administered to be maximised. While studies have shown that technological approaches to post-stroke rehabilitation do not produce better outcomes than equal amounts of traditional therapy in a …
Back To The Future: Programmatic Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment With Recommendation’S For Fay Slough, Mad River Slough, And Elk River Slough Wildlife Areas, Robert Sullivan
Local Reports and Publications
Humboldt Bay has the highest rate of seal level rise (18.6 inches per century) in California, and because of compaction and subsidence, former tidelands behind dikes surrounding Humboldt Bay are lower in elevation than Humboldt Bay at high tide. In order to adapt to future change in sea level rise, coastal Wildlife Area Managers need to understand vulnerability and risk, because adaptation to sea level rise is a risk management strategy against an uncertain future. The Humboldt Bay Inventory, Mapping, and Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment Project and associated data and reports (Laird 2013 and Powell and Laird 2013) provide …

Condition and trend Nutrients, such as phosphorus (P), are essential for profitable agriculture in the south-west of WA; however, excess P – more than is required for optimal production – is stored in many agricultural soils. On average, pasture soils and arable soils contain 1.3 times and 1.6 times respectively, as much P as is required for optimal production. Production in P-enriched soils is more likely to be constrained by soil acidity (50–60% of pasture and arable soils), potassium (K) (50% of pasture soils and less than 10% of arable soils), and sulphur (S) (30% of pasture soils). Management implications …

Experimental Microwave Breast Cancer Detection With Oil-On-Gelatin Phantom, Giuseppe Ruvio, Raffaele Solimene, Antonio Cuccaro, Jacinta Browne, Domenico Gaetano, Max Ammann
Conference Papers
Limitations of conventional X-ray mammography has induced a recent interest into radio frequency based diagnostic approaches in order to take advantage of the sharpest dielectric contrast between benign and malignant breast tissues in the microwave frequency range [1]. Dielectric contrast is notably higher than the radiographic density exploited by X-ray mammography. Consequences of the superior sensitivity of RF-based techniques can have a huge social and cost impact. By reducing the false response percent, a dramatic reduction of costs for the health system together with a diminution of traumatic experiences for the patients can be achieved. The antenna properties play a …
Serdemetan Antagonizes The Mdm2-Hif1Α Axis Leading To Decreased Levels Of Glycolytic Enzymes, Allan R. Albig
Serdemetan Antagonizes The Mdm2-Hif1Α Axis Leading To Decreased Levels Of Glycolytic Enzymes, Allan R. Albig
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Serdemetan (JNJ-26854165), an antagonist to Mdm2, was anticipated to promote the activation of p53. While regulation of p53 by Mdm2 is important, Mdm2 also regulates numerous proteins involved in diverse cellular functions. We investigated if Serdemetan would alter the Mdm2-HIF1α axis and affect cell survival in human glioblastoma cells independently of p53. Treatment of cells with Serdemetan under hypoxia resulted in a decrease in HIF1α levels. HIF1α downstream targets, VEGF and the glycolytic enzymes (enolase, phosphoglycerate kinase1/2, and glucose transporter 1), were all decreased in response to Serdemetan. The involvement of Mdm2 in regulating gene expression of glycolytic enzymes raises …

Barrier To Autointegration Factor (Baf) Inhibits Vaccinia Virus Intermediate Transcription In The Absence Of The Viral B1 Kinase, Nouhou Ibrahim, April Wicklund, Augusta Jamin, Matthew S. Wiebe
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Barrier to autointegration factor (BAF/BANF1) is a cellular DNA-binding protein found in the nucleus and cytoplasm. Cytoplasmic BAF binds to foreign DNA and can act as a defense against vaccinia DNA replication. To evade BAF, vaccinia expresses the B1 kinase, which phosphorylates BAF and blocks its ability to bind DNA. Interestingly, B1 is also needed for viral intermediate gene expression via an unknown mechanism. Therefore, we evaluated the impact of B1-BAF signaling on vaccinia transcription. Strikingly, the decrease in vaccinia transcription caused by loss of B1 can be rescued by depletion of BAF. The repressive action of BAF is greatest …

Hidden In Plain Sight: A Baseline Study Of Sexually-Exploited Male Masseurs In Metro Manila, Jarrett D. Davis, Glenn Miles
Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 5th (2013)
This study is third in a series of studies that explores the little-known lives and experiences, vulnerabilities and resiliencies of sexually exploited young men in Southeast Asia. It is a part of a small, collaborative movement among interested organizations who have both recognized and acted upon the neglect of boys and men in discussions of sexual abuse and exploitation. The studies have utilized both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, merging careful fieldwork and extensive, one-on-one structured interviews to provide a better understanding of the lives of young men and boys within the sex trade industry and an information resource for …

Temperament In Early Childhood And Peer Interactions In Third Grade: The Role Of Teacher–Child Relationships In Early Elementary Grades, Kathleen Moritz Rudasill, Kate Niehaus, Eric S. Buhs, Jamie M. White
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Children’s interactions with peers in early childhood have been consistently linked to their academic and social outcomes. Although both child and classroom characteristics have been implicated as contributors to children’s success, there has been scant research linking child temperament, teacher–child relationship quality, and peer interactions in the same study. The purpose of this study is to examine children’s early temperament, rated at preschool age, as a predictor of interactions with peers (i.e., aggression, relational aggression, victimization, and prosociality) in third grade while considering teacher–child relationship quality in kindergarten through second grades as a moderator and mediator of this association. The …

Bacillus thuringiensis is an important source of insect resistance traits in commercial crops. In an effort to prolong B. thuringiensis trait durability, insect resistance management programs often include combinations of insecticidal proteins that are not cross resistant or have demonstrable differences in their site of action as a means to mitigate the development of resistant insect populations. In this report, we describe the activity spectrum of a novel B. thuringiensis Cry protein, Cry1Bh1, against several lepidopteran pests, including laboratory-selected B. thuringiensis-resistant strains of Ostrinia nubilalis and Heliothis virescens and progeny of field-evolved B. thuringiensis-resistant strains of Plutella xylostella …
