To determine a molecular basis for prognostic differences in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), we employed a combinatorial network analysis framework to exhaustively search for molecular patterns in protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks. We identified a dysregulated molecular signature distinguishing short-term (survival< 225 days) from long-term (survival>635 days) survivors of GBM using whole genome expression data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). A 50-gene subnetwork signature achieved 80% prediction accuracy when tested against an independent gene expression dataset. Functional annotations for the subnetwork signature included "protein kinase cascade," "IκB kinase/NFκB cascade," and "regulation of programmed cell death" - all of which were not significant in signatures of …

The Adrenal Cortex Cell Line H295r Releases Interleukin-6, Timothy E. Lindsay, Dr. Allan M. Judd
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Up to this point, the study of adrenal glands has utilized mostly rat and bovine models. However, in the research of human physiology, human models are preferable to animal models. But human adrenal glands are difficult to obtain, and when they are obtained, experiments often have limited sample sizes. In addition, human adrenal glands available for research are often functionally altered by disease. Also, donors with healthy adrenal glands may be administered multiple pharmacological agents which modify adrenal functions. These obstacles show how a model that provides an unlimited quantity of tissue with consistent secretion patterns would take precedent over …
Traditional Healing Practice, Tyler Gibb
Traditional Healing Practice, Tyler Gibb
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Traditional primitive healing practices often involve medicines or treatments derived from plants or animals obtained from the local geographical region. The use of insects or closely related arthropods in primitive herbal medications is common. The practice of using arthropods in traditional healing practices was investigated among the culturally rich Ashanti healers in the village of Mampong in Ghana, West Africa. The Ashanti Tribe in Central Ghana is located in an area of lush vegetation and diverse arthropod fauna. The ‘folk-logic’, including cultural, biological, historical, religious, and environmental factors, that influences medical insect use was investigated. Significant factors influencing insect use …

Parental Height And Child Growth From Birth To 2 Years In The Who Multicentre Growth Reference Study, Cutberto Garza, Elaine Borghi, Adelheid W. Onyango, Mercedes De Onis, Edward A. Frongillo Jr.
Faculty Publications
inear growth from birth to 2 years of children enrolled in the World Health Organization Multicentre Growth Reference Study was similar despite substantial parental height differences among the six study sites. Within-site variability in child length attributable to parental height was estimated by repeated measures analysis of variance using generalized linear models. This approach was also used to examine relationships among selected traits (e.g. breastfeeding duration and child morbidity) and linear growth between 6 and 24 months of age. Differences in intergenerational adult heights were evaluated within sites by comparing mid-parental heights (average of the mother's and father's heights) to …

Reported Incidences Of Parasitic Infections In Marine Mammals From 1892 To 1978, John R. Felix
Reported Incidences Of Parasitic Infections In Marine Mammals From 1892 To 1978, John R. Felix
Zea E-Books Collection
The role of parasites in the lives and deaths of marine mammals has been scrutinized by biologists for decades, but the scientific literature prior to 1978 has been difficult to acquire and time-consuming to search. Now this new and extensive bibliography gives researchers a convenient resource for reviewing the classical literature on parasites of marine mammals so that historical infection prevalence and geographical distribution can be easily and properly assessed. This book contains detailed information about accepted (or suspected) taxonomic synonyms and geographical information about the host and/or parasite, covering the parasite groups Acanthocephala, Acarina, Anoplura, Cestoda, Nematoda, and Trematoda, …

Pushed To The Edge : The Treatment Of Transsexuals Through Time : A Behavioral Discourse Analysis Of The Diagnostic And Treatment Protocols For Transsexuals And The Implications For Contemporary Social Work Practice, Stacey D. Jackson-Roberts
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This article is a historical discourse analysis of the diagnostic and treatment protocols for transsexuals with implications for contemporary social work practice. The article uses the theoretical lens of post-structuralism and it complimentary methodology of historical discourse analysis to trace and critique the history of treatment and the power laden narratives used to regulate access to transition related care—particularly hormones and surgery. By analyzing these historical discourses, the article reveals the historical narratives and scripts that have constructed and pathologized transsexuals, and informed the evolution of the DSM and Standards of Care. Further, the article examines and critiques this history …

Face To Face : Impacts Of Facebook On Young Adults' Self-Esteem, Katherine Wiscomb
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study explored the possible implications social media sites, such as Facebook, have on young adults' self-esteem. The phenomenon of online friend-networking sites has increased over the past decade, and utilizing such sites has become a part of daily living for many individuals. This study also examined how individuals present themselves online--whether they post photos or status updates that represent who they are, or by presenting their hoped for self, their best self, or who they think others want them to be. While the findings indicated that participants experience a range of feelings while utilizing the Facebook networking site, the …

Weight Change In College Freshmen: Personal, Interpersonal And Situational Influences, Kristin Kuhlmann
Nursing ETDs
Obesity has become the most significant noninfectious health risk in the United States, and the major causes of death and disability are shifting to chronic, non-communicable health conditions that are largely attributable to physical inactivity, overweight and obesity, and other diet-related factors. Among children and adolescents, the overweight/obesity rate is approaching 32%, with 17.9% of adolescents becoming obese. While the obesity rate has doubled in all age groups in the United States, it has tripled among young adults aged 18 to 28 years, and 70% of adolescents who are at a healthy weight will become overweight or obese as adults. …

Differential Biosynthesis Of Antioxidant Stilbenoids In Hairy Root Cultures Of Muscadine Grape And Peanut Treated With Methyl Jasmonate And Hydrogen Peroxide, Cesar Augusto Nopo-Olazabal
Student Theses and Dissertations
Stilbenoids are polyphenolic compounds that are believed to protect plants against abiotic and biotic stresses. Importantly, an increasing number of these specialized plant metabolites have been associated with potential health benefits in humans. Therefore, understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in their biosynthesis is of importance to enhance the levels of these beneficial compounds in plants. In this research we studied the biosynthesis of stilbenoids in two economically important food crops: muscadine grape and peanut. Hairy root cultures were used as biological systems because their genetic and biochemical stability facilitates the study of specialized metabolism. Selected hairy root cultures from muscadine …

A Comparison Of Attention Bias Paradigms Related To Insomnia, Nathaniel Maloney
A Comparison Of Attention Bias Paradigms Related To Insomnia, Nathaniel Maloney
Theses and Dissertations
Attentional bias to sleep related stimuli by poor sleepers has been reported as a factor in initiating and maintaining sleep disturbance. In this study, three paradigms (Flicker, Posner, and Stroop) were used in comparison to further investigate the role of attentional biases in Primary Insomnia. Participants (n=117) were split into good sleepers and poor sleepers using a median split with the Pittsburgh Insomnia Rating Scale (PIRS). Using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) as the covariate, two-way mixed modality ANCOVAs were conducted for each paradigm revealing no significant differences in word type, quality of sleep, or the interaction …
