The Perspectives Of Asian Therapists On The Impacts Of Race And Ethnicity With Asian Clients And Non-Asian Clients Of Color, Andrea R. Yoshida
The Perspectives Of Asian Therapists On The Impacts Of Race And Ethnicity With Asian Clients And Non-Asian Clients Of Color, Andrea R. Yoshida
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study explores the perspectives of Asian therapists on how issues of race and ethnicity impact their clinical work with Asian clients and other clients of color. Ten Asian therapists from varying educational and professional backgrounds were interviewed about how the elements of racial similarity, racial difference, ethnic similarity, and ethnic difference may have influence on the relationships between them and their clients. Findings from this study confirmed previous studies regarding the positive impacts of racial and ethnic match on the therapeutic relationship between Asian therapists and Asian clients. As a small number of previous studies had indicated, this …

Indecision : Biopsychological Frames, Sarah G. Danborn
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This project is a theoretical investigation of indecision as it has been conceptualized from a number of perspectives, including within the literature of vocational counseling, the fields of cognitive and neuropsychology, and in emerging research from social psychologists and behavioral economists. Two theory chapters utilize concepts from existential theory and Winnicott's true and selves to explore the phenomenon more deeply. A discussion chapter critiques these theories and offers suggestions for further research, as well as implementation suggestions for the clinician based on the research and theories presented.

The Hidden Stem Economy: The Surprising Diversity Of Jobs Requiring Science, Technology, Engineering, And Math Knowledge, Jonathan Rothwell
The Hidden Stem Economy: The Surprising Diversity Of Jobs Requiring Science, Technology, Engineering, And Math Knowledge, Jonathan Rothwell
Brookings Scholar Lecture Series
Policy and businesses leaders have argued that there is a shortage of highly educated workers in professional occupations related to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Critics have countered that Ph.D scientists often face a difficult academic labor market and do not necessarily earn higher wages than other professionals. Yet, both sides of the STEM debate have been relying on an ill-defined definition of STEM work. Using a detailed survey of worker knowledge requirements, this research project redefines STEM jobs based on the level of knowledge required in STEM fields to perform occupations. The results uncover two facts previously unrecognized …

Development And Applications Of Metaheuristic Algorithms In Engineering Design And Structural Optimization / Ali Sadollah, Sadollah Ali
Student Works (2010-2019)
Metaheuristic algorithms have been extensively used in numerous domains especially in engineering. The reason is that for solving complex optimization problems, classical and traditional techniques may not efficiently find global optimum solution. In this thesis, the applications of a number of well-known metaheuristic algorithms for solving engineering problems have been considered. In addition, two novel optimization methods are developed and presented which are named the mine blast algorithm (MBA) and the water cycle algorithm (WCA). The fundamental concepts and ideas for MBA are derived from the explosion of mine bombs in real world. Accordingly, the ideas and philosophy of WCA …

Avoidance Of Apoptosis In Embryonic Cells Of The Annual Killifish Austrofundulus Limnaeus Exposed To Anoxia, Camie Lynn Meller, Jason E. Podrabsky
Avoidance Of Apoptosis In Embryonic Cells Of The Annual Killifish Austrofundulus Limnaeus Exposed To Anoxia, Camie Lynn Meller, Jason E. Podrabsky
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Embryos of the annual killifish Austrofundulus limnaeus have unequalled ability among vertebrates to survive long-term anoxia. Surprisingly, these embryos can survive for months in anoxia despite a large-scale decrease in ATP levels during the initial hours of anoxic exposure. These conditions are known to trigger apoptotic cell death in mammalian cells as a result of ischemia or anoxia. Anoxia-induced induction of apoptosis was investigated in four developmental stages of A. limnaeus that differ in their tolerance of anoxia, and thus may respond to anoxia uniquely. Exposure to staurosporine was used to determine if A. limnaeus cells were competent …

The Effects Of Neurotensin On The Rat Distal Colon, Rick Chainani
The Effects Of Neurotensin On The Rat Distal Colon, Rick Chainani
Theses and Dissertations
The enteric nervous system controls the gut through the release of specific neurotransmitter and neuromodulators at specific sites such as mucosal secretory cell or smooth muscle cell. In the present study, we have examined the response to one of these neurohumoral agents, Neurotensin, in the rat distal colon. Neurotensin is a paracrine and endocrine modulator of the digestive tract. Even though these effects have been seen in colonic preparations, there are very few functional studies of the effects of Neurotensin in the rat colon, especially the distal colon. In the current study we propose the following hypothesis that Neurotensin will …

Reaching The Youngest Hearts And Minds: Interviews With Diocesan Leaders Regarding Catholic Early Childhood Education, James M. Frabutt, Rachel Waldron
Journal of Catholic Education
Early childhood is a critically formative stage of human development and the educational experiences of children at this young age impact their cognitive, social, emotional, and physical competencies. In the U.S., early childhood education has grown dramatically since the 1960s, both in federal and state dollars invested and in terms of overall enrollment. However, despite what is known about early childhood education in general, the picture of whether and how the Catholic education sector—particularly diocesan schools and parishes—is serving early childhood needs remains unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to begin mapping the landscape of Catholic early childhood …

Unusual Polygenetic Void And Cave Development In Dolomitized Miocene Chalks On Barbados, West Indies, Jonathan B. Sumrall, John E. Mylroie, Hans G. Machel
International Journal of Speleology
Barbados provides an unusual case of polygenetic cave development within dolomitized chalks and marls of the Miocene Oceanics Group. These diagenetic processes are driven by a succession and interplay of tectonic uplift, fracturing, hypogene fluid injection, overprinting by mixing zone diagenesis, and mechanical and biological erosion in the current littoral zone. The significance of the voids and caves within the chalks on Barbados are: 1) these appear to be the first dissolution caves documented in dolomitized chalk, and 2) these features show a polygenetic origin documenting the diagenetic changes in lithology that allowed the development and preservation of these cave …

Behavioral Niche Partitioning In A Sympatric Tiger Beetle Assemblage And Implications For The Endangered Salt Creek Tiger Beetle, Tierney R. Brosius, Leon G. Higley
Behavioral Niche Partitioning In A Sympatric Tiger Beetle Assemblage And Implications For The Endangered Salt Creek Tiger Beetle, Tierney R. Brosius, Leon G. Higley
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
How behavioral patterns are related to niche partitioning is an important question in understanding how closely related species within ecological communities function. Behavioral niche partitioning associated with thermoregulation is well documented in tiger beetles as a group. Co-occurring species of salt flat tiger beetles have adapted many thermoregulatory behaviors to cope with this harsh ecosystem. On first examination these beetles appear to occur in overlapping microhabitats and therefore compete for resources. To determine if behavioral niche partitioning is allowing multiple species to occur within the same harsh salt flat ecosystem we observed Cicindela nevadica lincolniana, Cicindela circumpicta, Cicindela fulgida, and …

The emergence of the pandemic H1N1 strain of influenza in 2009 was associated with a unique w-shaped age-related susceptibility curve, with higher incidence of morbidity and mortality among young persons and lower incidence among older persons, also observed during the 1918 influenza pandemic. Pre-existing H1N1 antibodies were not cross-reactive with the prior seasonal vaccine, forcing influenza experts to scramble to develop a new vaccine specific for the pandemic virus. We hypothesized that response to T-cell epitopes that are cross-conserved between pandemic H1N1 and the 2008 seasonal influenza vaccine strains might have contributed to partial protection from clinical illness among older …

Objective: To determine the physiological impact of treatment with donepezil (Aricept) on neural circuitry supporting episodic memory encoding in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
Methods: Eighteen patients with MCI and 20 age-matched healthy controls (HC) were scanned twice while performing an event-related verbal episodic encoding task. MCI participants were scanned before treatment and after approximately 3 months on donepezil; HCwere untreated but rescanned at the same interval.Voxel-level analyses assessed treatment effects on activation profiles in MCI patients relative to retest changes in non-treated HC. Changes in task-related connectivity in medial temporal circuitry …

Specificity In The Actions Of The Ubr1 Ubiquitin Ligase In The Degradation Of Nuclear Receptors☆, Rasheda Sultana, Maria A. Theodoraki, Avrom J. Caplan
Publications and Research
The UBR1 ubiquitin ligase promotes degradation of proteins via the N-end rule and by another mechanism that detects a misfolded conformation. Although UBR1 was shown recently to act on protein kinases whose misfolding was promoted by inhibition of Hsp90, it was unknown whether this ubiquitin ligase targeted other client types of the chaperone. We analyzed the role of UBR1 in the degradation of nuclear receptors that are classical clients of Hsp90. Our results showed that UBR1 deletion results in impaired degradation of the glucocorticoid receptor and the androgen receptor but not the estrogen receptor α. These findings demonstrate specificity in …

The Ral Exchange Factor Rgl2 Promotes Cardiomyocyte Survival And Inhibits Cardiac Fibrosis, Rebecca L. Scotland, Leah Allen, Leah J. Hennings, Ginell R. Post, Steven R. Post
Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications
Cardiomyocytes compensate to acute cardiac stress by increasing in size and contractile function. However, prolonged stress leads to a decompensated response characterized by cardiomyocyte death, tissue fibrosis and loss of cardiac function. Identifying approaches to inhibit this transition to a decompensated response may reveal important targets for treating heart failure. The Ral guanine nucleotide disassociation (RalGDS) proteins are Ras-interacting proteins that are upregulated by hypertrophic stimuli. The Ral guanine nucleotide dissociation stimulator-like 2 (Rgl2) is a member of the RalGDS family that modulates expression of hypertrophic genes in cardiomyocytes. However, the pathophysiologic consequence of increased Rgl2 expression in cardiomyoctyes remains …

Are Your Parents To Blame? Disentangling Temperament, Parenting Style, And Schemas In The Development Of Depressive Symptoms, Jenny Delorme
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined Jeffrey Young's Schema Theory (1990; 2003) and its influence in understanding the etiological factors related to depressive symptoms. It was hypothesized that there would be significant interactions between parenting and temperament traits. It was also hypothesized that The Defectiveness and Insufficient Self Control EMSs would mediate the relationship between the significant parenting/temperament interactions and depressive symptoms. Participants were administered the Young Schema Questionnaire Short form-3 to measure the endorsement of schemas; the Beck Depression Inventory to measure symptoms of depression; the Young Parenting Inventory to measure perceived parenting; and the Adult Temperament Questionnaire to measure temperament traits. …
