Cytokine Regulation Of Adrenal Secretion Of Dehydroepiandrosterone (Dhea), Edward C. Miner, Dr. Allan M. Judd Sep 2013

Cytokine Regulation Of Adrenal Secretion Of Dehydroepiandrosterone (Dhea), Edward C. Miner, Dr. Allan M. Judd

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The adrenal cortex releases aldosterone, cortisol, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) into the blood stream. The regulation of aldosterone and cortisol release by the adrenal gland is well studied. In contrast, little is known about the regulation of DHEA secretion. Since low plasma levels of DHEA are associated with the aging process, rheumatoid arthritis, and disease progression in HIV-infected individuals, it is medically significant to determine the mechanism of DHEA release from the adrenal gland.

Coffee Berry Borer Joins Bark Beetles In Coffee Klatch, Juliana Jaramillo, Baldwyn Torto, Dickson Mwenda, Armin Troeger, Christian Borgemeister, Hans Michael Poehling, Wittko Francke Sep 2013

Coffee Berry Borer Joins Bark Beetles In Coffee Klatch, Juliana Jaramillo, Baldwyn Torto, Dickson Mwenda, Armin Troeger, Christian Borgemeister, Hans Michael Poehling, Wittko Francke

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Unanswered key questions in bark beetle-plant interactions concern host finding in species attacking angiosperms in tropical zones and whether management strategies based on chemical signaling used for their conifer-attacking temperate relatives may also be applied in the tropics. We hypothesized that there should be a common link in chemical signaling mediating host location by these Scolytids. Using laboratory behavioral assays and chemical analysis we demonstrate that the yellow-orange exocarp stage of coffee berries, which attracts the coffee berry borer, releases relatively high amounts of volatiles including conophthorin, chalcogran, frontalin and sulcatone that are typically associated with Scolytinae chemical ecology. The …

Detecting Modules In Multiplex Networks – An Application For Integrating Expression Profiles Across Multiple Species, Koon-Kiu Yan, Daifeng Wang, Joel Rozowsky, Henry Zheng, Baikang Pei, Mark Gerstein

Yale Day of Data

Multiplex network, a set of networks linked through interconnected layers, is a useful mathematical framework for data integration. Here, we present a general method to detect modules in multiplex networks and apply it in a specific biological context: to simultaneously cluster the genome-wide expression profiles of C. elegans and D. melanogaster generated by the ENOCDE and modENCODE consortia. The method revealed modules that are fundamentally cross-species and can either be conserved or species-specific. In general, the method could be applied in various contexts like the integration of different social networks.

Ethnic Differences In Family Stress Processes Among African- Americans And Black Caribbeans, Bridget J. Goosby, Cleopatra Howard Caldwell, Anna Bellatorre, James S. Jackson Sep 2013

Ethnic Differences In Family Stress Processes Among African- Americans And Black Caribbeans, Bridget J. Goosby, Cleopatra Howard Caldwell, Anna Bellatorre, James S. Jackson

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Several theories of stress exposure, including the stress process and the family stress model for economically disadvantaged families, suggest that family processes work similarly across race/ ethnic groups. Much of this research, however, treats African-Americans as a monolithic group and ignores potential differences in family stress processes within race that may emerge across ethnic groups. This study examines whether family stress processes differ intraracially in African- American and Black Caribbean families. Using data from the National Survey of American Life, a national representative data set of African-American and Black Caribbean families, we assess the extent to which parents’ stress appraisals …

Cultivating Creativity: Documenting The Journey, Grace Schlitt

Learn X Design Conference Series

As a Master’s of Education in Learning Sciences candidate at the University of Washington and a licensed architect, I co-taught the course Cultivating Creativity with Professor Iain Robertson, Winter Quarter 2012. This course is offered annually to a group of 15 Honors students at the University. Professor Robertson has taught this class for five years. Participating students were in ‘non-creative’ majors such as Biology, Chemistry, or Math. Two students were in Computer Science and Religious Studies. Most of the students arrived expecting to ‘learn’ how to be creative. Through exercises that Professor Robertson developed, the students gained confidence in their …

Migratory Patterns And Habitat Use Of The Sand Tiger Shark (Carcharias Taurus) In The Western North Atlantic Ocean, Shara Marie Teter Sep 2013

Migratory Patterns And Habitat Use Of The Sand Tiger Shark (Carcharias Taurus) In The Western North Atlantic Ocean, Shara Marie Teter

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Large population declines for sand tiger sharks (Carcharias taurus) in parts of its global range are well documented, resulting in a strong need for biologically informed conservation and management measures. Although sand tigers in the western North Atlantic have been listed as a Species of Concern by the US government since 1997, details of their seasonal migratory movements and especially vertical habitat use patterns along the US East Coast are limited. Understanding these movement patterns is vital to reducing fishery-related mortality of these sharks and informing other management efforts aimed at recovery of their stocks in the US Atlantic. …

Relatedness And The Symbolic Substance Of Kinship Among The K’Iche’, Stephen Brady, Dr. Janis Nuckolls Sep 2013

Relatedness And The Symbolic Substance Of Kinship Among The K’Iche’, Stephen Brady, Dr. Janis Nuckolls

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Kinship studies was a central concern of socio-cultural anthropology for decades. The centrality of kinship within the discipline was due to the traditional anthropological practice of studying social structure among small-scale societies. Social anthropologists found that kinship provides people with an effective form of organization in the absence of a state. In many small-scale societies, descent determines the economic, political, religious, and social position of individuals. By the second half of the twentieth century kinship studies faced a rapid decline within social anthropology, in part because some anthropologists found that kinship studies were based on Western presuppositions about the biogenetic …

Novel Deep Eutectic Solvents And Their Application In The Liquid-Liquid Extraction Of Aromatic Compounds / Mukhtar A. Kareem Aljadri, Aljadri Mukhtar A. Kareem

Student Works (2010-2019)

The thermal cracking of naphtha is a major source of ethylene. It supplies more than half of the demand on ethylene to the industry. Naphtha contains in some cases high concentrations of aromatic hydrocarbons. They were found to be cracking-resistants and thus their existence in naphtha imposes negative effects on the overall process of ethylene production. Their removal from naphtha was achieved by liquid-liquid extraction using sulfolane as extractant. The extraction by sulfolane is not efficient at low concentrations of aromatics. Additionally, sulfolane is applied at high temperatures. Ionic liquids were proposed by different researches to replace sulfolane as extractants …

Brief Research Report: Sociodemographic Factors Associated With Hiv Status Among African American Women In Washington, Dc, Dexter R. Voisin

Faculty Scholarship

Introduction: African American women living in Washington, DC have one of the highest Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) incidence rates in the US. However, this population has been understudied, especially as it relates to factors associated with HIV status. Methods: This cross-sectional study examined sociodemographic factors that were associated with having a negative or positive HIV status among a sample of 115 African American women between the ages of 24 and 44 years. We assessed such factors as age, education, sexual orientation, household income, sources of income, number of children, length of residency tenure in Washington, DC, and level of HIV-prevention …
