Model Of Gene Expression In Extreme Cold - Reference Transcriptome For The High-Antarctic Cryopelagic Notothenioid Fish Pagothenia Borchgrevinki, Kevin T. Bilyk, C. H.Christina Cheng
Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Background: Among the cold-adapted Antarctic notothenioid fishes, the high-latitude bald notothen Pagothenia borchgrevinki is particularly notable as the sole cryopelagic species, exploiting the coldest and iciest waters of the Southern Ocean. Because P. borchgrevinki is a frequent model for investigating notothenioid cold-adaptation and specialization, it is imperative that " omic" tools be developed for this species. In the absence of a sequenced genome, a well annotated reference transcriptome of the bald notothen will serve as a model of gene expression in the coldest and harshest of all polar marine environments, useful for future comparative studies of cold adaptation and thermal …

Yale Day of Data
Conservation of biodiversity demands comprehension of evolutionary and ecological patterns and processes that occur over vast spatial and temporal scales. A central goal of ecology is to understand the factors that control the spatial distribution of species and this has become even more important in the face of climate change. However, at global scales there can be enormous uncertainty in environmental data used to model species distributions. Even ‘simple’ metrics such as mean annual precipitation are difficult to estimate in areas with few weather stations and available data sets do not quantify uncertainty in these surfaces. We are developing a …
Elucidating The Population Dynamics Of Japanese Knotweed Using Integral Projection Models, Joseph T. Dauer, Eelke Jongejans
Elucidating The Population Dynamics Of Japanese Knotweed Using Integral Projection Models, Joseph T. Dauer, Eelke Jongejans
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Plant demographic studies coupled with population modeling are crucial components of invasive plant management because they inform managers when in a plant’s life cycle it is most susceptible to control efforts. Providing land managers with appropriate data can be especially challenging when there is limited data on potentially important transitions that occur belowground. For 2 years, we monitored 4 clonal Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum) infestations for emergence, survival, shoot height until leaf senescence, dry shoot biomass after senescence, and rhizome connections for 424 shoots. We developed an integral projection model using both final autumn shoot height and shoot …

A Hairy Tale Analysis Of Adobe-Embedded Hair From Arrowhead Hill, Escalante, Utah, Bradley A. Newbold, Dr. Joel Janetski
Journal of Undergraduate Research
During the Spring Term of 2004, the BYU Archaeological Field School excavated a portion of Arrowhead Hill, a Formative (or early agricultural) Period site a few miles west of Escalante, Utah. Two intriguing finds were made during that field season: two pit-house structures of varying style situated within a few meters of each other and multiple large, deep, spherical underground pits. Diagnostic characteristics of Formative Period pit-houses are, among others, the style of structure construction and the style and type of ceramic vessels recovered on or near the original floor of the structure. From this, it was concluded that one …

Birth Methods And The Incidence Of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome-Sids, Luiz H. Meneghin, Dr. Debra Hobbins
Birth Methods And The Incidence Of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome-Sids, Luiz H. Meneghin, Dr. Debra Hobbins
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), also called crib death, refers to the sudden, unexpected death of any infant or young child in whom a postmortem examination fails to demonstrate a cause for death. It is the greatest single cause of death among infants between 1 week and 1 year of age.1 Many studies have identified risk factors associated with SIDS (low birth weight, preterm delivery, maternal smoking, winter months, positioning during sleep, male gender, etc.), however, no studies were found regarding the method of birth and the incidence of SIDS. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation …

The Therapist's Pregnancy And The Client-Therapist Relationship : An Exploratory Study, Elizabeth H. Wolfe
The Therapist's Pregnancy And The Client-Therapist Relationship : An Exploratory Study, Elizabeth H. Wolfe
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This empirical research study explored the impact of the therapist's pregnancy on the therapist-client relationship. Specifically, this study asked whether therapists and clients interact in less professional, more personal ways during the therapist's pregnancy, and how this is perceived by therapists to impact treatment. Relational psychodynamic theory was the theoretical underpinning of this study. Thirteen psychotherapists were interviewed about their experiences of practicing therapy while pregnant. All participants were either currently or recently pregnant. Interview questions were developed by this researcher to elicit therapist experiences with clients who asked personal questions or offered baby gifts to the therapist, and how …

Publications and Research
Lipid molecules such as arachidonic acid (AA) and sphingolipid metabolites have been implicated in modulation of neuronal and endocrine secretion. Here we compare the effects of these lipids on secretion from cultured bovine chromaffin cells. First, we demonstrate that exogenous sphingosine and AA interact with the secretory apparatus as confirmed by FRET experiments. Examination of plasma membrane SNARE microdomains and chromaffin granule dynamics using total internal reflection fluorescent microscopy (TIRFM) suggests that sphingosine production promotes granule tethering while arachidonic acid promotes full docking. Our analysis of single granule release kinetics by amperometry demonstrated that both sphingomyelinase and AA treatments enhanced …
The Gender Trap: Parents And The Pitfalls Of Raising Boys And Girls, Mardi Schmeichel
The Gender Trap: Parents And The Pitfalls Of Raising Boys And Girls, Mardi Schmeichel
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Book review
The book The Gender Trap: Parents and the Pitfalls of Raising Boys and Girls is an example of the kind of nuanced research that works toward unraveling the complexities of gender as expressed in individual lives as well as larger societal patterns that contribute to problematic assumptions about who girls and boys and women and men must be. Sociologist Emily Kane focuses specifically on the “gender trap” in parenting, which she defines as “a set of expectations and structures that inhibit social change and stall many parents’ best intentions for loosening the limits that gender can impose on …

Gene Expression Life History Markers In A Hatchery And A Wild Population Of Young-Of-The-Year Oncorhynchus Mykiss, Ian D. F. Garrett
Gene Expression Life History Markers In A Hatchery And A Wild Population Of Young-Of-The-Year Oncorhynchus Mykiss, Ian D. F. Garrett
Dissertations and Theses
Life history within a single species can vary significantly. Many of these differences are associated with varying environmental conditions. Understanding what environmental conditions cue alternate life histories within a single species has been researched extensively. In salmonid fishes, more than almost any other group, varying environmental conditions give rise to individuals within species that take markedly different life history trajectories.
Oncorhynchus mykissis a species of salmonid native to the Pacific Northwest region of North America. This species has two life history forms, anadromous and resident. The anadromous form spends a portion of its life in ocean while the resident life …

Learning From Lesbian Non-Gestational Parents : Contributions To A Changing World, Amy B. Morse
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study explored narratives of lesbian non-gestational parents as they reflected on how they planned the stages of building a family, experienced their partner's pregnancy, and adapted to parenthood. The study delved into issues of personal and social identity as these shifted during this important period in family life. The present inquiry contributes to our gaps in knowledge about how planned lesbian-led families take shape and specifically about the experiences of non-gestational parents as they engage in each stage from lesbian partner to lesbian parent. This study examines ways how non-gestational parents cultivate their family roles, explores considerations of …

Alteration of maternal lipid metabolism early in development has been shown to trigger obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases later in life in humans and animal models. Here, we set out to determine (i) lipid composition dynamics in single oocytes and preimplantation embryos by high mass resolution desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (DESI-MS), using the bovine species as biological model, (ii) the metabolically most relevant lipid compounds by multivariate data analysis and (iii) lipid upstream metabolism by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis of several target genes (ACAT1, CPT 1b, FASN, SREBP1 and SCAP). Bovine oocytes and blastocysts …
