“A Southern Expendable”: Cultural Patriarchy, Maternal Abandonment, And Narrativization In Dorothy Allison's Bastard Out Of Carolina, Natalie Carter
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Bastard Out of Carolina is a remarkable text for many reasons: Allison’s unsentimental portrayal of profound poverty in the Old South; her unflinching depiction of incest; and the conclusion—devastating for character and reader alike—all contribute to the “flawless” nature of this novel. Perhaps most remarkable, though, is Allison’s ability to seamlessly weave a particularly Southern tradition of masculinity and violence into this heartbreaking tale of a daughter’s trauma and a mother’s abandonment. In this article, I will investigate Allison’s multifaceted portrayals of trauma in Bastard Out of Carolina, which—when combined with an analysis of social and economic traditions in …

Accuracy Assessment Of Noaa's Florida Keys Benthic Habitat Map, Brian K. Walker, Ian Rodericks, Amanda Costaregni
Accuracy Assessment Of Noaa's Florida Keys Benthic Habitat Map, Brian K. Walker, Ian Rodericks, Amanda Costaregni
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
This report describes the methodologies, analyses, and results for an independent accuracy assessment of a thematic benthic habitat map produced by NOAA for the Florida Keys. It is an analysis of four regional accuracy assessments. Over the course of the Florida Keys mapping project, NOAA amended part of the classification scheme. The original scheme for mapping benthic cover was a tiered approach where certain benthic cover categories were given priority over others (e.g. coral was most important). Recently, this was modified to a dominant benthic cover scheme where the habitat is characterized by the single most dominant cover type and …

Functional Characterization Of Metallothioneins In Arabidopsis And Barley, Nimnara Yookongkaew
Functional Characterization Of Metallothioneins In Arabidopsis And Barley, Nimnara Yookongkaew
Open Access Dissertations
Metalothioneins (MTs) are metal binding proteins that can bind metals such as Cu, Zn, and Cd but the functions of MTs in plants are largely unknown. To understand the function of MTs in Arabidopsis, T-DNA insertion mutants lacking 4 MT genes including MT1a, MT2a, MT2b and MT3 were developed. The quadruple mutant (mt1a/mt2a/mt2b/mt3) showed no visible phenotype under standard growth conditions. However, it accumulated higher Cu in leaves compared to wild type but lower Cu in seeds. Further analysis showed that triple mutants lacking both MT1a and MT2b, which are highly expressed in vascular tissues, had similar …

Rathod, Sandra R. Ph.D., Purdue University, December 2013. An Eriksonian Approach to Consumer Identity. Major Professor: Richard A. Feinberg.
Ego development is the fifth stage in Erikson's Lifecycle Development theory (1959) and is a major psychosocial stage beginning in adolescence and lasting into emerging adulthood. Past research based upon Marcia's Ego Identity Status Paradigm (1996) has investigated a number of ideological and interpersonal domains relevant to one's ego identity, however in today's consumer societies, where what you have is at least as important is who you are or what you do, an Eriksonian approach to consumer ego identity (CEI) has …

Decision Making: Fishing Production And Fishers In The Black Sea, Mine Cinar, Joseph Johnson, Andrew Palmer
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This paper explores empirical evidence as well as a theoretical model of fisheries in the Black Sea which have become depleted as a result of both environmental degradation and overexploitation. We examine overfishing and the optimal fish catch, and derive Evolutionary Stable Strategies (ESS) from a game theory perspective by using agent risk profiles. We explain how risk-averse fishers may choose to fish at unsustainable levels, even though it may reduce their overall fish catch in the long run. Risk attitudes of artisanal fishers within the frameworks of expected utility and prospect theories also have implications on risk aversion and …

Diabetes And Prostate Cancer Screening In Black And White Men, Maureen Sanderson, Jay H. Fowke, Loren Lipworth, Xijing Han, Flora Ukoli, Ann L. Coker, William J. Blot, Margaret K. Hargreaves
CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles
PURPOSE: Prior studies conducted primarily among white men find a reduced risk of prostate cancer associated with time since developing diabetes. While biologic explanations are plausible, the association may in part arise from more frequent prostate cancer screening among those with a diabetes diagnosis. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association between diabetes and prostate cancer screening.
METHODS: We examined differences in prostate cancer screening (prostate-specific antigen and/or digital rectal examination) testing practices after a diabetes diagnosis among lower-income persons living in the southeastern United States and enrolled in the Southern Community Cohort Study between 2002 …

Colorful Displays Signal Male Quality In A Tropical Anole Lizard, E. G. Cook, Troy G. Murphy, Michele A. Johnson
Biology Faculty Research
Parasites influence colorful ornaments and their behavioral display in many animal hosts. Because coloration and display behavior are often critical components of communication, variation in these traits may have important implications for individual fitness, yet it remains unclear whether such traits are signals of quality in many taxa. We investigated the association between ectoparasitic mite load and the color and behavioral use of the throat fan (dewlap) by male Anolis brevirostris lizards. We found that heavily parasitized lizards exhibited lower body condition, duller dewlaps, and less frequent dewlap displays than less parasitized individuals. Our results thus suggest that highly parasitized …
Youth And Vegetative Renewal In Ancient Maya Religious Ideology, Emma Pankey
Youth And Vegetative Renewal In Ancient Maya Religious Ideology, Emma Pankey
Spectrum
The role of children in ancient Maya religion and ritual was predicated upon the qualities of youth and vitalization that children possess. Furthermore, their role was rooted in associations between these possessed qualities, phenomena of agricultural renewal, and broader conceptions of life forces and cycles. These shared qualities created links between religious ideas about young children, agricultural sustenance, and ensoulment processes. Ethnohistoric and ethnographic accounts relating to ritualized child socialization provide details for parallel arguments on the ancient social and religious status of Maya children. Ideological connections can also be directly inferred from ancient Maya art, and can be interpreted …

Violent Sex: How Gender-Based Violence Is Structured In Haiti, Healthcare & Hiv/Aids, Chanelle Fox
Violent Sex: How Gender-Based Violence Is Structured In Haiti, Healthcare & Hiv/Aids, Chanelle Fox
Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality
Healthcare is a basic right that must be protected. Although international policy and domestic law should be designed to protect human rights and equality, little attention has been given to the cumulative effect of the global healthcare system as evidenced in the domestic application of healthcare initiatives. This Note critically analyzes international treaties, domestic law, and HIV/AIDS-related initiatives in Haiti to evaluate the efficacy of the global healthcare system. It argues that this system is structurally violent against women, and that this violence is perpetuated through policy and law. Law, policy, and healthcare must better address systemic issues of gender-based …
Pseudo-Archaeology: The Appropriation And Commercialization Of Cultural Heritage, Alecia Bassett
Pseudo-Archaeology: The Appropriation And Commercialization Of Cultural Heritage, Alecia Bassett
Spectrum
Heritage can be defined as the use of the past to construct ideas about identity in the present. The past that this definition references is most commonly linked to tangible objects, and therefore archaeological artifacts. As such, archaeology becomes inexorably linked with cultural heritage in that many cultures are dependent on archaeological objects helping them continue to define their identity. However, there are various threats to cultural heritage, especially as more groups of peoples attempt to evoke objects as belonging to their own cultural background. This has been happening throughout history, but in the nineteenth-century pseudo-archaeology became a new threat. …

Biology
The oligotrophic freshwater bacterium Caulobacter crescentus encodes a cluster of genes (CC_1487 to CC_1495) shown here to be necessary for metabolism of D-galacturonate, the primary constituent of pectin, a major plant polymer. Sequence analysis suggests that these genes encode a version of the bacterial hexuronate isomerase pathway. A conserved 14 bp sequence motif is associated with promoter regions of three operons within this cluster, and is conserved in homologous gene clusters in related alpha-Proteobacteria. Embedded in the hexuronate gene cluster is a gene (CC_1489) encoding a member of the LacI family of bacterial transcription factors. This gene product, designated here …

Crime Analytics: Mining Event Sequences In Criminal Careers, Carl A. Janzen
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation addresses the pressing and difficult problem of assessing the risk of re-offending for parolees. The prison system in the state of California has been given a strong mandate to dramatically reduce the prison population. Before final discharge, prisoners often serve a portion of their sentence on parole release, but they are at high risk to re-offend. A number of systems have been developed to aid practitioners in parolee risk assessment, but the recommendations of these systems have not been consistently followed. Field practitioners were skeptical that recommendations adequately accounted for repeat offending histories, and did not believe that …

Different Types Of Backward Bifurcations Due To Density-Dependent Treatments, Baojun Song, Wen Du, Jie Lou
Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
A set of deterministic SIS models with density-dependent treatments are studied to understand the disease dynamics when different treatment strategies are applied. Qualitative analyses are carried out in terms of general treatment functions. It has become customary that a backward bifurcation leads to bistable dynamics. However, this study finds that finds that bistability may not be an option at all; the disease-free equilibrium could be globally stable when there is a backward bifurcation. Furthermore, when a backward bifurcation occurs, the fashion of bistability could be the coexistence of either dual stable equilibria or the disease-free equilibrium and a stable limit …
