Estimation Of Variation For High-Throughput Molecular Biological Experiments With Small Sample Size, Danni Yu Oct 2013

Estimation Of Variation For High-Throughput Molecular Biological Experiments With Small Sample Size, Danni Yu

Open Access Dissertations

Motivation: In the quantification of molecular components, a large variation can affect and even potentially mislead the biological conclusions. Meanwhile, the high-throughput experiments often involve a small number of samples due to the limitation of cost and time. In such cases, the stochastic information may dominate the outcome of an experiment because there may not be enough samples to present the true biological information. It is challenging to distinguish the changes in phenotype from the stochastic variation.

Methods: Since the biological molecules have been quantified with different technologies, different statistical methods are required. Focusing on three types of important high-throughput …

The Role Of Resource Predictability In The Metapopulation Dynamics Of Insects, Byju Nambidiyattil Govindan Oct 2013

The Role Of Resource Predictability In The Metapopulation Dynamics Of Insects, Byju Nambidiyattil Govindan

Open Access Dissertations

The metapopulation paradigm has emerged as an important tool to understand the dynamics of species living in fragmented landscapes. In this dissertation, I investigate the unpredictable nature of resource availability for species living in human-dominated heterogeneous and dynamic landscapes in the context of its consequences for long-term regional persistence of species. In particular, I test theoretical advancements in metapopulation ecology following a two-pronged approach - via experiments in the lab and observations in the field - using insects. In chapter 1, I introduce the concept of metapopulation ecology in the context of its relevance for dynamics of species living in …

Deconstructed Gender Norms In Princess Mononoke, Karen Olowu '14 Oct 2013

Deconstructed Gender Norms In Princess Mononoke, Karen Olowu '14

2013 Fall Semester

I’ve loved anime ever since I was a little kid. I remember staying up late every Friday night to watch Toonami with my older brother. However as I’ve grown up, I’ve begun to resent the one sided femininity displayed by the majority of female anime characters. Anime is notorious for its stereotypical portrayal of female characters. Girls are usually naive and wide eyed, rushing stupidly into trouble only for the brave hero to pull them out of it. My frustration with carbon copy female heroines had gotten to the point that I considered putting my love for anime to rest. …

Sentencing The Family: Recognizing The Needs Of Dependent Children In The Administration Of The Criminal Justice System, Tamar Lerer Oct 2013

Sentencing The Family: Recognizing The Needs Of Dependent Children In The Administration Of The Criminal Justice System, Tamar Lerer

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

Hundreds of thousands of incarcerated persons are parents; in many instances, their incarceration has profound effects on their young children. Despite the predictable harm that the these children experience when their caretakers are incarcerated, the criminal justice system lacks a uniform, principled, and transparent way to consider their interests at critical stages in the process.

In this Article, I argue that the interests of the children of incarcerated offenders should be considered and demonstrate how this can be done. The paper proceeds in three Parts. In the first Part, I explain why we should care about caretaker incarceration: it harms …

Halloysite Nanotube Composites For Sustained Release Of Antimocrobial Agents (Antiseptics And Antibiotics), Wenbo Wei Oct 2013

Halloysite Nanotube Composites For Sustained Release Of Antimocrobial Agents (Antiseptics And Antibiotics), Wenbo Wei

Doctoral Dissertations

Encapsulation of antimicrobial agents (simple antiseptics and more specific antibiotics) within micro-scale and nano-scale containers may provide prolonged and more evenly distributed drug release. One of such containers proposed at Louisiana Tech is natural halloysite clay nanotubes. Halloysite is an aluminosilicate tube with a length of approximately 1 µm, outer diameter of approximately 50 nm, and internal lumen of 15 nm. The chemical composition of halloysite is similar to more common clay–kaolinite, and it can be described as rolled sheets of kaolinite. Halloysite, loaded with drugs inside its lumen, has shown aqueous release of the loaded chemicals over 10-20 hours …

Adsorption-Controlled Growth Of Bivo4 By Molecular-Beam Epitaxy, D. A. Hillsberry, D. A. Tenne Oct 2013

Adsorption-Controlled Growth Of Bivo4 By Molecular-Beam Epitaxy, D. A. Hillsberry, D. A. Tenne

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Single-phase epitaxial films of the monoclinic polymorph of BiVO4 were synthesized by reactive molecular-beam epitaxy under adsorption-controlled conditions. The BiVO4 films were grown on (001) yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia (YSZ) substrates. Four-circle x-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and Raman spectroscopy confirm the epitaxial growth of monoclinic BiVO4 with an atomically abrupt interface and orientation relationship (001)BiVO4 ∥ (001)YSZ with [100]BiVO4 ∥ [100]YSZ. Spectroscopic ellipsometry, STEM electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS), and x-ray absorption spectroscopy indicate that the films have a direct band gap of 2.5 ± 0.1 eV.

Dekorver, Victoria A. Levasseur, Andrew Osborne, Alessia Tassoni, Barbara Lorber, Janosch P. Heller, Rafael Villasmil, Natalie D. Bull, Keith R. Martin, Stanislav I. Tomarev

United States Public Health Resources

The development of neuroprotective strategies to attenuate retinal ganglion cell death could lead to novel therapies for chronic optic neuropathies such as glaucoma. Intravitreal transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells slows retinal ganglion cell death in models of optic nerve injury, but the mechanism of action remains unclear. Here we characterized the neuroprotective effects of mesenchymal stem cells and mesenchymal stem cell-derived factors in organotypic retinal explant culture and an in vivo model of ocular hypertensive glaucoma. Co-culture of rat and human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells with retinal explants increased retinal ganglion cell survival, after 7 days ex vivo, by …

Suspended Lipid Bilayer For Optical And Electrical Measurements Of Single Ion Channel Proteins, Suneth P. Rajapaksha, Xuefei Wang, H. Peter Lu Oct 2013

Suspended Lipid Bilayer For Optical And Electrical Measurements Of Single Ion Channel Proteins, Suneth P. Rajapaksha, Xuefei Wang, H. Peter Lu

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Making and holding an artificial lipid bilayer horizontally in an aqueous solution within the microscopic working distance of similar to 100 mu m are essential for simultaneous single molecule imaging and single ion-channel electrical current recording. However, preparation of such a lipid bilayer without a solid support is technically challenging. In a typical supported lipid bilayer, the asymmetric local environments and the strong perturbation of the underneath solid or dense surface can diverge the normal behavior of membrane proteins and lipids. On the other hand, the suspended lipid bilayers can provide a native local environment for the membrane proteins and …
