SRG is proposing an NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) remodel for a major healthcare provider here in the Portland metro area. This is an intensive care unit for babies born prematurely and up to 6 months of age. The space is in an existing hospit al and has previously been used as an N ICU. However, it is currently being used as overflow office space and is now under consideration for being remodelled and re-commissioned as an N ICU.The healthcare provider who owns the hospit al has recently realized that this could be a value-added service for their business model.

Sequestration And Scavenging Of Iron In Infection, Nermi Lee Parrow, Robert E. Fleming, Michael F. Minnick Oct 2013

Sequestration And Scavenging Of Iron In Infection, Nermi Lee Parrow, Robert E. Fleming, Michael F. Minnick

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The proliferative capability of many invasive pathogens is limited by the bioavailability of iron. Pathogens have thus developed strategies to obtain iron from their host organisms. In turn, host defense strategies have evolved to sequester iron from invasive pathogens. This review explores the mechanisms employed by bacterial pathogens to gain access to host iron sources, the role of iron in bacterial virulence, and iron-related genes required for the establishment or maintenance of infection. Host defenses to limit iron availability for bacterial growth during the acute-phase response and the consequences of iron overload conditions on susceptibility to bacterial infection are also …

Theresa M. Kelley, Clandestine Marriage: Botany And Romantic Culture. A Review By James C. Mckusick, James C. Mckusick Oct 2013

Theresa M. Kelley, Clandestine Marriage: Botany And Romantic Culture. A Review By James C. Mckusick, James C. Mckusick

English Faculty Publications

Book review by James C. McKusick. Truly encyclopedic in scope, Clandestine Marriage traces the efflorescence of botanical discourse in the long Romantic period, from the foundation of the Linnaean system of classification in Systema Naturae (1735) through the first publication of Charles Darwin's Origin of Species (1859). Kelley offers a comprehensive historical view of botany as a distinct nexus of interaction between literature and science, showing how the characteristic certainties of Enlightenment science broke down under the pressure of newly-discovered plant specimens from distant parts of the world, new ways of understanding the taxonomic relationships among various plant species, and …

Philosophy Upside Down?, Peter Baumann Oct 2013

Philosophy Upside Down?, Peter Baumann

Philosophy Faculty Works

Philip Kitcher recently argued for a reconstruction in philosophy. According to him, the contemporary mainstream of philosophy (in the English-speaking world, at least) has deteriorated into something that is of relevance only to a few specialists who communicate with each other in a language nobody else understands. Kitcher proposes to reconstruct philosophy along two axes: a knowledge axis (with a focus on the sciences) and a value axis. The present article discusses Kitcher's diagnosis as well as his proposal of a therapy. It argues that there are problems with both, and it ends with an alternative view of what some …

Randomized Clinical Trial Examining Duration Of Voucher-Based Reinforcement Therapy For Cocaine Abstinence., Kimberly C Kirby, Carolyn M Carpenedo, Karen L Dugosh, Beth J Rosenwasser, Lois A Benishek, Alicia Janik, Rachel Keashen, Elena Bresani, Kenneth Silverman

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

BACKGROUND: This is the first study to systematically manipulate duration of voucher-based reinforcement therapy (VBRT) to see if extending the duration increases abstinence during and following VBRT.

METHODS: We randomized cocaine-dependent methadone-maintained adults to Standard (12 weeks; n=62) or Extended (36 weeks; n=68) VBRT and provided escalating voucher amounts contingent upon urinalysis verification of cocaine abstinence. Urinalysis was scheduled at least every 2 weeks during the 48-week study and more frequently during VBRT (3/week) and 12 weeks of Aftercare (2/week).

RESULTS: Extended VBRT produced longer durations of continuous cocaine abstinence during weeks 1-24 (5.7 vs 2.7 weeks; p=0.003) and proportionally …

Dipl 6277 Na Global Health, Bioterrorism, And International Security, Yanzhong Huang Phd Oct 2013

Dipl 6277 Na Global Health, Bioterrorism, And International Security, Yanzhong Huang Phd

Diplomacy Syllabi

In today’s world, international trade and travel threaten epidemics by transporting and spreading infectious disease globally at jet speed. The growing risk of exposure to infectious disease, coupled with the looming threat of bioterrorism, creates a situation in which health and security are interacting with greater frequency and intensity. This development parallels post-Cold War efforts to redefine the concept of security to encompass new global challenges. To what extent does health fit this new security agenda? What are the major linkages between health and security? Should other global health challenges (e.g., non-communicable chronic diseases) be framed as problems that demand …

Increased Abundance Of Frost Mrna During Recovery From Cold Stress Is Not Essential For Cold Tolerance In Adult Drosophila Melanogaster., H Udaka, A Percival-Smith, B J Sinclair Oct 2013

Increased Abundance Of Frost Mrna During Recovery From Cold Stress Is Not Essential For Cold Tolerance In Adult Drosophila Melanogaster., H Udaka, A Percival-Smith, B J Sinclair

Biology Publications

Frost (Fst) is a candidate gene associated with the response to cold in Drosophila melanogaster because Fst mRNA accumulation increases during recovery from low temperature exposure. We investigated the contribution of Fst expression to chill-coma recovery time, acute cold tolerance and rapid cold hardening (RCH) in adult D. melanogaster by knocking down Fst mRNA expression using GAL4/UAS-mediated RNA interference. In this experiment, four UAS-Fst and one tubulin-GAL4 lines were used. We predicted that if Fst is essential for cold tolerance phenotypes, flies with low Fst mRNA levels should be less cold tolerant than flies with normal levels of cold-induced Fst …

Cross-Tolerance And Cross-Talk In The Cold: Relating Low Temperatures To Desiccation And Immune Stress In Insects., Brent J Sinclair, Laura V Ferguson, Golnaz Salehipour-Shirazi, Heath A Macmillan Oct 2013

Cross-Tolerance And Cross-Talk In The Cold: Relating Low Temperatures To Desiccation And Immune Stress In Insects., Brent J Sinclair, Laura V Ferguson, Golnaz Salehipour-Shirazi, Heath A Macmillan

Biology Publications

Multiple stressors, both abiotic and biotic, often are experienced simultaneously by organisms in nature. Responses to these stressors may share signaling pathways ("cross-talk") or protective mechanisms ("cross-tolerance"). Temperate and polar insects that must survive the winter experience low temperatures accompanied by additional abiotic stressors, such as low availability of water. Cold and desiccation have many similar effects at a cellular level, and we present evidence that the cellular mechanisms that protect against cold stress also protect against desiccation, and that the responses to cold and dehydration likely evolved as cross-tolerance. By contrast, there are several lines of evidence suggesting that …

Image Free-Viewing As Intrinsically-Motivated Exploration: Estimating The Learnability Of Center-Of-Gaze Image Samples In Infants And Adults, Matthew Schlesinger, Dima Amso

Publications

We propose that free viewing of natural images in human infants can be understood and analyzed as the product of intrinsically-motivated visual exploration. We examined this idea by first generating five sets of center-of-gaze (COG) image samples, which were derived by presenting a series of natural images to groups of both real observers (i.e., 9-month-olds and adults) and artificial observers (i.e., an image-saliency model, an image-entropy model, and a random-gaze model). In order to assess the sequential learnability of the COG samples, we paired each group of samples with a simple recurrent network, which was trained to reproduce the corresponding …

Fried Walleye And Cherry Pie, Peggy Wolff Wolff Oct 2013

Fried Walleye And Cherry Pie, Peggy Wolff Wolff

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

With its corn by the acre, beef on the hoof, Quaker Oats, and Kraft Mac n’ Cheese, the Midwest eats pretty well and feeds the nation on the side. But there’s more to the midwestern kitchen and palate than the farm food and sizable portions the region is best known for beyond its borders. It is to these heartland specialties, from the heartwarming to the downright weird, that Fried Walleye and Cherry Pie invites the reader.

The volume brings to the table an illustrious gathering of thirty midwestern writers with something to say about the gustatory pleasures and peculiarities of …

The New Reform Judaism, Dana Evan Kaplan Oct 2013

The New Reform Judaism, Dana Evan Kaplan

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

This is the book that American Jews and particularly American Reform Jews have been waiting for: a clear and informed call for further reform in the Reform movement.

In light of profound demographic, social, and technological developments, it has become increasingly clear that the Reform movement will need to make major changes to meet the needs of a quickly evolving American Jewish population. Younger Americans in particular differ from previous generations in how they relate to organized religion, often preferring to network through virtual groups or gather in informal settings of their own choosing.

Dana Evan Kaplan, an American Reform …

Family Trouble, Joy Castro Oct 2013

Family Trouble, Joy Castro

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Whenever a memoirist gives a reading, someone in the audience is sure to ask: How did your family react? Revisiting our pasts and exploring our experiences, we often reveal more of our nearest and dearest than they might prefer. This volume navigates the emotional and literary minefields that any writer of family stories or secrets must travel when depicting private lives for public consumption.

Essays by twenty-five memoirists, including Faith Adiele, Alison Bechdel, Jill Christman, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Rigoberto González, Robin Hemley, Dinty W. Moore, Bich Minh Nguyen, and Mimi Schwartz, explore the fraught territory of family history told from …

Fight Or Flight: Parental Decisions About Predators At Nests Of Northern Bobwhites (Colinus Virginianus), Susan N. Ellis-Felege, Jonathan S. Burnam, William E. Palmer, D. Clay Sisson, John P. Carroll

Biology Faculty Publications

Patterns of nest defense against predators by ground-nesting bird species in the wild are poorly understood, largely because of a historical inability to directly monitor nests. Most nest-defense studies have observed responses elicited from artificial predators or human observers presented to nesting birds, and few have attempted to present these events in the context of predator—prey relationships found in the wild. We hypothesized that predator threat level (e.g., the threat posed to the clutch or to the clutch and the attending adult), parental characteristics, clutch investment, and future reproductive opportunities would influence avian nest-defense decisions. During 1999–2006, we examined predation …

Question Order Effects On A General Chemistry Concept Inventory, Travis Lund Oct 2013

Question Order Effects On A General Chemistry Concept Inventory, Travis Lund

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

During the development of a general chemistry concept survey, interviews demonstrated that students used distinctly different problem‐solving strategies to answer two survey questions, one verbally‐based and one pictorially‐based, despite the fact that the questions were both designed to test the same concept of strong versus weak acids. Alternate versions of the concept survey were administered, with the order of the pictorial and verbal questions reversed. A significant ordering effect was observed in the questions of interest, and the incorrect answer choices that became better or worse distractors were identified. Current findings, future directions, and practical implications for instructors and researchers …

Bradykinin B2 Receptor In The Adrenal Medulla Of Male Rats And Mice: Glucocorticoid-Dependent Increase With Immobilization Stress, Regina Nostramo, Andrej Tillinger, Lidia Serova, Richard Kvetnansky, Esther L. Sabban Oct 2013

Bradykinin B2 Receptor In The Adrenal Medulla Of Male Rats And Mice: Glucocorticoid-Dependent Increase With Immobilization Stress, Regina Nostramo, Andrej Tillinger, Lidia Serova, Richard Kvetnansky, Esther L. Sabban

NYMC Faculty Publications

Bradykinin, acting via the bradykinin B2 receptor (B2R), is a potent stimulator of adrenomedullary catecholamine biosynthesis and release and likely plays an important role in the adrenomedullary stress response. However, the effects of stress on the expression of this receptor in the adrenal medulla are currently unclear. Here, we examined the changes in adrenomedullary B2R gene expression in male rats in response to single (1 time) and repeated (6 times) exposure to 2 hours immobilization stress (IMO). Immediately after 1 or 6 times IMO, B2R mRNA levels were increased by 9-fold and 7-fold, respectively, and returned to unstressed control levels …

Pharmacological Characterization Of A Novel Non-At1, Non-At2 Angiotensin Binding Site Identified As Neurolysin, Jamala D. Swindle, Kira L. Santos, Robert C. Speth

HPD Articles

The discovery of a novel non-AT1, non-AT2 binding site for angiotensins in the rodent brain and testis that is unmasked by the organomercurial compound para-chloromercuribenzoic acid (PCMB) has catalyzed efforts to purify and characterize this protein. We recently reported that this protein is neurolysin and now report upon the specificity of this binding site for various neuropeptides. Competition binding assays in rat brain and testis used (125)I-Sar(1), Ile(8) angiotensin II (Ang II) as the radioligand in the presence of saturating concentrations of AT1 and AT2 receptor antagonists and 100 μM parachloromercuribenzoate. Primary screening of 36 peptides and other compounds at …
