Bacterial Transcription Factors Grea, Greb And Dksa: Characterization Of Their Interaction With Rna Polymerase And Molecular Mechanism Of Action, Andrey Parshin
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations
The activity of RNA polymerase (RNAP), the key enzyme of transcription process, is regulated by a large number of transcription factors acting at each step of the transcription cycle. Our research project is focused on studying the structure and function of bacterial transcript cleavage factors GreA, GreB and the stringent response regulator DksA. Gre factors bind in the secondary channel of RNAP in backtracked (inactive) ternary elongation complexes and stimulate the enzyme's intrinsic RNase activity, which is required for suppression of transcription pause and arrest, enhancement of transcription fidelity, and efficient promoter escape. DksA also acts through the RNAP secondary …

Allied Health Students’ Perceptions Of Class Difficulty: The Case Of Undergraduate Human Anatomy And Physiology Classes, Diana Sturges, Trent Mauner
Allied Health Students’ Perceptions Of Class Difficulty: The Case Of Undergraduate Human Anatomy And Physiology Classes, Diana Sturges, Trent Mauner
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: The Human Anatomy and Physiology (HAP) course is required of all allied health majors. Students need to earn a grade of “C” or better, and many students find this class academically challenging. This study investigated allied health students’ perceptions of what makes the undergraduate class difficult. Methods: A 28-question survey targeted 403 students enrolled in three HAP sections taught by the same instructor. Results: Students returned 279 surveys (68% return rate). Qualitative and quantitative data supported a three factor model in making this class difficult: discipline, student, and teaching related factors. Students consider that discipline factors are more important …

A Silent Killer Of India’S Women: Investigating The Barriers To Adequate Tuberculosis Treatment And Diagnosis For Women In Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, Evonne Mcarthur
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Nearly 20 years ago, the World Health Organization declared tuberculosis as a global public health emergency, yet today TB still remains a major global health challenge. It is estimated that during 2012 8.6 million were infected with TB and 1.3 million died from the disease (WHO, 2013). Globally, more than one third of the population is infected with TB and, after HIV/AIDS, TB is the greatest killer world-wide due to a single infectious agent. 95 percent of the global TB burden lies within low and middle-income countries and among the 22 countries determined to be high epidemiological burden countries, India …
"There's No Wrong Way To Make A Family": Surrogacy Law And Pennsylvania's Need For Legislative Intervention, Saraann C. Bennett
"There's No Wrong Way To Make A Family": Surrogacy Law And Pennsylvania's Need For Legislative Intervention, Saraann C. Bennett
Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)
Surrogacy is an alternative reproductive technology that provides persons unable to have children of their own the means to create life. The use of surrogacy arrangements has skyrocketed over the past 20 years. The law, however, has not advanced as quickly. Because of the ethical implications of having a mother gestate a child for another person, along with the challenge surrogacy arrangements provide to traditional notions of parentage, the majority of state legislatures have shied away from taking a clear position on this controversial issue. As such, many courts are left to decide the legal parentage of children born from …

Creativity is a major factor in many careers, subjects, and disciplines. Although many people first assume engineering to be a field of study that does not require any creativity, it is actually an essential tool for successful engineers. The mark of a truly accomplished engineer is the ability to problem-solve effectively; in other words, to generate creative solutions. Although the goal as engineers is to become more creative throughout one’s career, is it even possible to gain creativity? Is creativity an innate quality, or a learned one? Since the engineering process demands creativity, we looked into how creativity can be …

The Impact Of Social Interaction On Student Learning, Beth Hurst, Randall Wallace, Sarah B. Nixon
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Due to the lack of student engagement in the common lecture-centered model, we explored a model of instructional delivery where our undergraduate and graduate classes were structured so that students had opportunities for daily interaction with each other. Specifically, we examined how students perceived the value of social interaction on their learning by reflecting on their classroom experiences at the end of each class period. Three literacy teacher preparation courses during a summer session were chosen for this study based on the highly interactive nature of each course. The purpose of the study was not to determine the difference between …

Synthesis Of Orthogonally Protected 1,2-Diaminopropanoic Acids By Ring-Opening Of 3-Unsubstituted N-Activated Aziridine 2-Carboxylates With Para-Methoxybenzylamine: A Study Of The Regioselectivity Of The Reaction, Fintan Kelleher, Keith O'Brien
Articles
Orthogonally protected 1,2-diaminopropanoic acids (DAPs) have been synthesised in good yields by the ring-opening of 3-unsubstituted N-activated aziridine 2-carboxylates with para-methoxybenzylamine. The choice of both the N-activating group and ester alkyl group had a significant influence on the ratio of attack at the a or b positions of the aziridine. However, the regiochemical outcome is not predictable.

Combined Erp/Fmri Evidence For Early Word Recognition Effects In The Posterior Inferior Temporal Gyrus, Joseph Dien, Eric S. Brian, Dennis L. Molfese, Brian T. Gold
Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications
Two brain regions with established roles in reading are the posterior middle temporal gyrus and the posterior fusiform gyrus. Lesion studies have also suggested that the region located between them, the posterior inferior temporal gyrus (pITG), plays a central role in word recognition. However, these lesion results could reflect disconnection effects since neuroimaging studies have not reported consistent lexicality effects in pITG. Here we tested whether these reported pITG lesion effects are due to disconnection effects or not using parallel ERP/fMRI studies. We predicted that the Recognition Potential (RP), a left-lateralized ERP negativity that peaks at about 200–250 ms, might …
Analysis Of Environmental Factors Affecting Fruit Quality For The 2007 Growing Season In A California Vineyard, Sean Castorani
Analysis Of Environmental Factors Affecting Fruit Quality For The 2007 Growing Season In A California Vineyard, Sean Castorani
SNS Master's Theses
Wine grape quality is heavily influenced by a combination of soil properties and site topography. We used anthocyanin content and yield data from Vitis vinifera L. cv. Cabernet Sauvignon from a vineyard near Madera, California collected during the 2007 growing season. We compared sets of hypotheses regarding the anthocyanin content of winegrapes and vineyard yields as a function of vineyard soil and topographic properties. Each hypothesis was expressed as a regression model predicting a response variable (yield or anthocyanin content) from one or more predictor variables. We used a multiple working hypotheses approach to compare these models using information theoretic …
An Alternative Compliance Framework For Stormwater Management In The Central Coast Region, Violetta Pristel
An Alternative Compliance Framework For Stormwater Management In The Central Coast Region, Violetta Pristel
SNS Master's Theses
Urbanization modifies watershed hydrology, increases stormwater runoff, and impacts the quality of receiving waters. The Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board (CCRWQCB) will be requiring hydromodification control and Low Impact Development (LID) for certain new development and redevelopment projects as part of their “Post-construction Stormwater Management Requirements for Development Projects in the Central Coast Region” (PCRs) for Municipal Phase I and II Stormwater NPDES permits. Compliance with PCRs revolves around the use of structural and non-structural LID stormwater control measures (SCMs) and numerical performance-based criteria. An alternative compliance (AC) approach provides off-site compliance options when on-site compliance may be …
An Integrated Plasma Spectroscopic And Capacitive Sensing Platform For Water Quality Diagnostics, John William Sweeney
An Integrated Plasma Spectroscopic And Capacitive Sensing Platform For Water Quality Diagnostics, John William Sweeney
Doctoral Dissertations
Even in modern times, the consumption of polluted water continues to inflict tremendous suffering on millions of people worldwide that is largely preventable with adequate sanitation practices, routine water quality diagnostics, and treatment. However, conventional water quality monitoring practices remain a time consuming endeavor, where water samples collected on-site are transported to off-site laboratories for evaluation with laboratory-scale chemical analysis devices. While considerable efforts have been made to miniaturize these devices for in-field use, many of the devices reported in the literature provide an incomplete assessment of a water contaminant's environmental impact by focusing on identifying its chemical composition and …
Notchless Interacts With Multiple Signaling Pathways During Mouse Peri-Implantation Development, Chiao-Ling Lo
Notchless Interacts With Multiple Signaling Pathways During Mouse Peri-Implantation Development, Chiao-Ling Lo
Open Access Dissertations
During peri-implantation, the embryo transitions from a suspension environment in the fallopian tubes to an adherent system within the uterus. Successful transition requires maternal and fetal signaling cascades that establish maternal-fetal boundaries. Failure is common, as ~ 25% of all human pregnancies terminate during these steps. A large-scale mutation study in mice produced two mutants (l11Jus1 and l11Jus4) that are excellent models of this transition. l11Jus1 and l11Jus4 contain missense mutations in the Notchless homolog 1 (Drosophila) (Nle1) gene. NLE1 is thought to signal via the canonical NOTCH pathway in vertebrates. Although in invertebrates and lower vertebrates, NOTCH signaling directs …
Influence Of Cholesterol And Bilayer Asymmetry On Membrane Protein Distribution In Polymer-Tethered Raft-Mimicking Lipid Membranes, Noor Fueza Hussain
Influence Of Cholesterol And Bilayer Asymmetry On Membrane Protein Distribution In Polymer-Tethered Raft-Mimicking Lipid Membranes, Noor Fueza Hussain
Open Access Dissertations
It is now widely recognized that lipid rafts, which are membrane domains enriched in cholesterol (CHOL) and sphingolipids (SL), play a significant functional role in the plasma membrane. Raft domains particularly affect membrane functionality by causing sequestering of membrane proteins. Underlying mechanisms of raft-associated membrane protein sequestration remain elusive, due to the complexity, transient nature, and small size of raft domains in cellular membranes. To address these challenges, this dissertation unveils the relationship between lipid raft composition and membrane protein sequestration and function using raft-mimicking model membrane mixtures comprised of coexisting liquid-ordered (lo) and liquid-disordered (ld) domains with reconstituted membrane …

Development Of A Field-Portable Miniature Mass Spectrometer Designed For In-Situ Analysis And Ion Trap Miniaturization, Paul Isaac Hendricks
Open Access Dissertations
Chemical analysis by mass spectrometry has become the gold standard due to the sensitivity, selectivity, and short analysis times that are afforded by the method. Advances in miniaturized vacuum systems, mass analyzers, electronics, and ionization sources have allowed for the development of field-portable mass spectrometers. The performance of portable instruments has received much attention for their utility in the detection of illicit drugs, explosives, environmental contaminants, therapeutic drugs, and more recently, biological tissues. Furthermore, detection of the aforementioned compounds can be completed at atmospheric pressures and in the presence of complex matrices and sample surfaces when used in conjunction with …

Exposure to early life trauma (ELT) is known to have a profound impact on mental development, leading to a higher risk for depression and anxiety. Our aim was to use multiple structural imaging methods to systematically investigate how traumatic stressors early in life impact the emotional brain circuits, typically found impaired with clinical diagnosis of depression and anxiety, across the lifespan in an otherwise healthy cohort. MRI data and self-reported histories of ELT from 352 healthy individuals screened for no psychiatric disorders were analyzed in this study. The volume and cortical thickness of the limbic and cingulate regions were assessed …

Digital Fluency : Skills Necessary For Learning In The Digital Age, Gerald K. White
Digital learning research
This article examines the skills that will be required for the 21st century that will need to be embedded in educational curricula in order achieve them. It begins by considering how communicating between people has changed and current educational responses. A view of 21st century skills follows with an argument for some core subjects that will be necessary. Learning and teaching are then discussed leading to a view about what is needed in order to develop digital fluency in education, for now and the future.
