Talking The Talk: An Exploration Of Parent-Child Communication About Cyberbullying, Veronica Anne Droser

Dissertations and Theses

Technology has, without a doubt, altered the social fabric of society. Mediated forms of communication have paved the way for more efficient production, and the vast amount of information available online has given people the opportunity to be more informed than ever. However, the rise of mediated communication has also presented a number of new threats. The current study focused on one of these threats, cyberbullying, and was interested in looking at how parents talk about and understand their child's cyberbullying behavior.

This study had the goal of uncovering if parents talk to their child about cyberbullying, and how they …

Spatial Analysis Of Climate And Winegrape Production In Winegrape Growing Regions Of Oregon, United States Of America, Willow Devin Campbell Oct 2013

Spatial Analysis Of Climate And Winegrape Production In Winegrape Growing Regions Of Oregon, United States Of America, Willow Devin Campbell

Dissertations and Theses

American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) are susceptible to small variations in climate and microclimates and are found within a narrow latitudinal range of prime climate conditions. These AVAs are geographically determined based on the best soil, climate, precipitation and temperature combinations for specific winegrape regions. As climate change continues to alter the local weather and the greater climate region of the Western United States, winegrape growing regions in Oregon are being affected. In an effort to determine what the pattern of change is, and compare previous studies of climate change using climate indices, a comparative study based in part on prior …

Defining The Vulnerable Period For Re-Establishment Of Clostridium Difficile Colonization After Treatment Of C. Difficile Infection With Oral Vancomycin Or Metronidazole, Venkata C.K. Sunkesula, Sirisha Kundrapu, Robin L. Jump, Curtis J. Donskey Oct 2013

Defining The Vulnerable Period For Re-Establishment Of Clostridium Difficile Colonization After Treatment Of C. Difficile Infection With Oral Vancomycin Or Metronidazole, Venkata C.K. Sunkesula, Sirisha Kundrapu, Robin L. Jump, Curtis J. Donskey

Faculty Scholarship

Background:Clostridium difficile is an anaerobic, spore-forming bacterium that is the most common cause of healthcare-associated diarrhea in developed countries. A significant proportion of patients receiving oral vancomycin or metronidazole for treatment of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) develop recurrences. However, the period of vulnerability to re-establishment of colonization by C. difficile after therapy is not well defined.Principal Findings:In a prospective study of CDI patients, we demonstrated that most vancomycin-treated patients maintained inhibitory concentrations of vancomycin in stool for 4 to 5 days after therapy, whereas metronidazole was only detectable during therapy. From the time of elimination of the antibiotics to 14 …

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

Over the past decades, some scientific progress has been made in understanding and treating cancer-related fatigue (CRF). However, three major problems have limited further progress: lack of agreement about measurement, inadequate understanding of the underlying biology, and problems in the conduct of clinical trials for CRF. This commentary reports the recommendations of a National Cancer Institute Clinical Trials Planning Meeting and an ongoing National Cancer Institute working group to address these problems so that high-priority research and clinical trials can be conducted to advance the science of CRF and its treatment. Recommendations to address measurement issues included revising the current …

Diet And Health Capital: An American Case Study, Matthew J. Klein Oct 2013

Diet And Health Capital: An American Case Study, Matthew J. Klein

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper begins to model diet's contribution to national stocks of Health Capital as defined in Kenneth Arrow et al.'s (2012) "Sustainability and the Measurement of Wealth" by developing a set of equations that link the diet of a nation’s average citizen to that nation’s per capita welfare over time. The model is applied to the American diet from 2005 to 2009. This research finds that even a small change in diet can have a large impact in whether or not a nation is sustainable over time.

Genetic Algorithm Based Model In Text Steganography, Christine K. Mulunda, Peter W. Wagacha, Alfayo O. Adede

The African Journal of Information Systems

Steganography is an ancient art. It is used for security in open systems. It focuses on hiding secret messages inside a cover medium. The most important property of a cover medium is the amount of data that can be stored inside it without changing its noticeable properties. There are many sophisticated techniques with which to hide, analyze, and recover that hidden information. This paper discusses an exploration in the use of Genetic Algorithm operators on the cover medium. We worked with text as the cover medium with the aim of increasing robustness and capacity of hidden data. Elitism is used …

Prevalence, Serotype, Virulence Characteristics, Clonality, And Antibiotic Susceptibility Of Pathogenic Yersinia Enterocolitica From Swine Feces, Saumya Bhaduri, Irene V. Wesley

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Enteroinvasive pathogenic strains of Yersinia enterocolitica are recognized as major human pathogens that cause 96,000 cases of human disease annually in the United States (Scallen et al. 2011 ) . Ninety percent of those cases are the result of foodborne transmission (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 2006 ; Nesbakken 2005 ; Scallen et al. 2011 ) . Swine are identified as important reservoirs of Y. enterocolitica serotypes (O:3, O:5, O:8, O:9) that are associated with human illness (Fredriksson-Ahomaa et al. 2011 ) . Pathogenic Y. enterocolitica carriage in swine ranges from 35 to 70% of herds and 4.5 …

Administration of adipose-derived stromal/stem cells (ASCs) represents a promising therapeutic approach for autoimmune diseases since they have been shown to have immunomodulatory properties. The uncultured, nonexpanded counterpart of ASCs, the stromal vascular fraction (SVF), is composed of a heterogeneous mixture of cells. Although administration of ex vivo culture-expanded ASCs has been used to study immunomodulatory mechanisms in multiple models of autoimmune diseases, less is known about SVF-based therapy. The ability of murine SVF cells to treat myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein35-55-induced experimental autoimmune encephalitis (EAE) was compared with that of culture-expanded ASCs in C57Bl/6J mice. A total of 1 x …

There is a significant clinical need for effective therapies for primary progressive multiple sclerosis, which presents later in life (i.e., older than 50 years) and has symptoms that increase in severity without remission. With autologous mesenchymal stem cell therapy now in the early phases of clinical trials for all forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), it is necessary to determine whether autologous stem cells from older donors have therapeutic effectiveness. In this study, the therapeutic efficacy of human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) from older donors was directly compared with that of cells from younger donors for disease prevention. Mice were …

Fiber Treating Metabolic Syndrome, Alexis D. Stamatikos, Farzad Deyhim, Gary A. Apgar, William J. Banz Oct 2013

Fiber Treating Metabolic Syndrome, Alexis D. Stamatikos, Farzad Deyhim, Gary A. Apgar, William J. Banz

Peer-reviewed Articles

The number of individuals diagnosed with metabolic syndrome has risen dramatically in recent years. Although not a disease itself, metabolic syndrome significantly raises the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus, both considered to be epidemics. Therefore, it is critical to promote aggressive therapies that effectively combat conditions associated with the metabolic syndrome. However, treating metabolic syndrome is complicated due to the complex nature of its pathophysiology coinciding with the many health abnormalities metabolic syndrome is often associated with, including but not limited to, insulin resistance, central obesity, hypertension, and atherogenic dyslipidemia. One promising compound that has …

Improving The Sweeping Efficiency Of Permanganate Into Low Permeable Zones To Treat Tce: Experimental Results And Model Development, Chanat Chokejaroenrat, Negin Kananizadeh, Chainarong Sakulthaew, Steve D. Comfort, Yusong Li

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

The residual buildup and treatment of dissolved contaminants in low permeable zones (LPZs) is a particularly challenging issue for injection-based remedial treatments. Our objective was to improve the sweeping efficiency of permanganate into LPZs to treat dissolved-phase TCE. This was accomplished by conducting transport experiments that quantified the ability of xanthan-MnO4− solutions to penetrate and cover (i.e., sweep) an LPZ that was surrounded by transmissive sands. By incorporating the non-Newtonian fluid xanthan with MnO4−, penetration of MnO4− into the LPZ improved dramatically and sweeping efficiency reached 100% in fewer pore volumes. To quantify …

Biochemical Characterization Of Midgut Receptor Asian Corn Borer Ostriniafurnacalis Guenee (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) And Modification Of Domain Iii Ss-Sheet 13 Of Bacillus Thuringiensis Cry1ab Δ-Endotoxin, Edwin P. Alcantara, Aileen N. Bayot

Journal Article

Brush border membrane vesicles (BBMVs) were prepared from 4th instar larvae of Asian corn borer Ostrinia furnacalis Guenee. SDS-PAGE analysis showed major protein bands with molecular weight in the range of 80 kDa to 250 kDa. Ligand blot analysis showed that biotinylated Cry1Ab δ-endotoxin strongly binds to a ~250 kDa receptor protein from 0. furnacalis BBMV. Another receptor protein of ~110 kDa weakly binds to Cry1Ab δ-endotoxin. At least two isoforms of the ~250 kDa receptor protein have a pH range of 5.5 to 6.5 as determined by 2D-electrophoresis. Post-translational modification of 0. furnacalis BBMV proteins was also detected …

Morphometrics Of Four Genital Traits In Some Philippine Populations Of The Asian Corn Borer, Ostrinia Furnacalis (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), Gelyn D. Sapin, Barbara L. Caoili, Jessamyn D. Recuenco-Adorada Oct 2013

Morphometrics Of Four Genital Traits In Some Philippine Populations Of The Asian Corn Borer, Ostrinia Furnacalis (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), Gelyn D. Sapin, Barbara L. Caoili, Jessamyn D. Recuenco-Adorada

Journal Article

The morphometrics of four genital traits were examined among the 27 local populations of Asian corn borer (ACB), Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee). Comparison in measurements of genital traits, namely: aedeagus, sacculus and valva lengths and clasper width, showed significant differences among and within the local populations compared. Cluster analysis based on percent correct classification revealed four groups within ACB populations with 96% accuracy. However, the more sensitive jackknife correct classification analysis revealed that the groups formed were 85% accurate. The results also showed that groups were formed regardless of geographical distance. The variations in genital traits of the different ACB populations …

Performance Guarantees For C-Wmd Robot Missions, Shu Jiang, Ronald C. Arkin, Damian M. Lyons, Tsung-Ming Liu, Dagon Harrington

Faculty Publications

Robotics has been considered as one of the five key technology areas for defense against attacks with weapons of mass destruction (WMD). However, due to the mass impact nature of WMD, failures of counter-WMD (C-WMD) missions can have catastrophic consequences. To ensure robot's success in carrying out C-WMD missions, we have developed a novel verification framework in providing performance guarantees for behavior-based and probabilistic robot algorithms in complex real-world environments. This paper describes the system architecture and discusses how the verification framework can be used to provide pre-mission performance guarantees for robots in executing C-WMD missions.

Illusion Or Ununderstood Reality: Spiritual Or Psychic Healing And Protection In Southern Madagascar, Henri Lucien Sandifer

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Far from the hospital room and its doctor, the medicine and philosophies of Lakazy and its Ombiasa pertain to a domain largely untouched by western logic and science. Their practices appear to be effective and unique enough to have survived the advent of compelling new theological and scientific belief systems and the vastly different perspectives on community health and stability which these systems have brought to Madagascar. The prime examples of these new arrivals are Christianity and modern medicine, respectively. Within and without their sacred space, the mission of the true Ombiasa is to support their community and for this …

Non-State Armed Groups And Technology: The Humanitarian Tragedy At Our Doorstep?, Colonel Dave Wallace, Major Shane Reeves

University of Miami National Security & Armed Conflict Law Review

Technological advances are altering the contemporary asymmetric conflicts between non-‐state armed groups and state actors. This article discusses the humanitarian consequences of these changing conflicts by first illustrating the dangers posed by non-‐state armed groups gaining access to advanced technologies. A subsequent examination of the increasing ability of non-‐state armed groups to use new technologies, such as cyber operations, to mitigate state actor advantages and the resultant risks to civilian populations follows. The article concludes that the humanitarian challenges presented by this growing intimacy between non-‐state armed groups and technology, whether through a potentially devastating attack or by the dramatic …
