Certain robot missions need to perform predictably in a physical environment that may only be poorly characterized in advance. We have previously developed an approach to establishing performance guarantees for behaviorbased controllers in a process-algebra framework. We extend that work here to include random variables, and we show how our prior results can be used to generate a Dynamic Bayesian Network for the coupled system of program and environment model. Verification is reduced to a filtering problem for this network. Finally, we present validation results that demonstrate the effectiveness of the verification of a multiple waypoint robot mission using this …

One-Day Treatment Of Small Molecule 8-Bromo-Cyclic Amp Analogue Induces Cell-Based Vegf Production For In Vitro Angiogenesis And Osteoblastic Differentiation, Kevin W.-H. Lo, Ho Man Kan, Keith A. Gagnon, Cato T. Laurencin
UCHC Articles - Research
Small molecule based regenerative engineering is emerging as a promising strategy for regenerating bone tissue. Small molecule cAMP analogues have been proposed as novel biofactors for bone repair and regeneration, and while promising, the effect that these small molecules have on angiogenesis, a critical requirement for successful bone regeneration, is still unclear. Our previous research demonstrated that the small molecule cAMP analogue 8-bromoadenosine-3’,5’-cyclic monophosphate (8-Br-cAMP) was able to promote initial osteoblast adhesion on a polymeric scaffold via cAMP signaling cascades. Here, we report that 8-Br-cAMP is capable of inducing in vitro cell-based VEGF production for angiogenesis promotion. We first demonstrated …

Load Path Uncertainty In A Wood Structure And The Effect On Structural Reliability, Wenqi Wang, Christopher D. Eamon
Load Path Uncertainty In A Wood Structure And The Effect On Structural Reliability, Wenqi Wang, Christopher D. Eamon
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research Publications
The roof truss bearing points of a light-framed wood house were instrumented with load cells. It was found that under dead load alone, symmetric and theoretically identical truss reactions have significant variation. A similar degree of reaction discrepancy was found under the application of uplift pressures caused by hurricane winds. Analysis revealed that the majority of this discrepancy is caused by inherent uncertainties in load path. Although uncertainties in load magnitude and material resistance are accounted for in design by use of appropriate load and resistance factors, load path is generally taken to be deterministic. In this study, load path …

Joint Estimation Of Multiple Graphical Models From High Dimensional Time Series, Huitong Qiu, Fang Han, Han Liu, Brian Caffo
Joint Estimation Of Multiple Graphical Models From High Dimensional Time Series, Huitong Qiu, Fang Han, Han Liu, Brian Caffo
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
In this manuscript the problem of jointly estimating multiple graphical models in high dimensions is considered. It is assumed that the data are collected from n subjects, each of which consists of m non-independent observations. The graphical models of subjects vary, but are assumed to change smoothly corresponding to a measure of the closeness between subjects. A kernel based method for jointly estimating all graphical models is proposed. Theoretically, under a double asymptotic framework, where both (m,n) and the dimension d can increase, the explicit rate of convergence in parameter estimation is provided, thus characterizing the strength one can borrow …

The cost of whole genome sequencing is dropping rapidly. There has been a great deal of enthusiasm about the potential for this technological advance to transform clinical care. Given the interest and significant investment in genomics, this seems an ideal time to consider what the evidence tells us about potential benefits and harms, particularly in the context of health care policy. The scale and pace of adoption of this powerful new technology should be driven by clinical need, clinical evidence, and a commitment to put patients at the centre of health care policy.

Controls Of Phosphorus Loading And Transport In The Cuyahoga River Of Northeastern Ohio, Usa, Fasong Yuan, Jaime A. Quellos, Chaojun Fan
Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications
An urban stream differs from a natural stream in that it commonly contains anthropogenic nutrients from a variety of diffuse and point sources (e.g., urban runoff, industrial and municipal effluents). The Cuyahoga River as one of such stream systems receives on average 30% of water from over a dozen wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and exports over 300 Mg/yr of total phosphorus (TP) into Lake Erie. Municipal effluents account for at least two thirds of the TP loading and 90% of the effluent TP is in the form of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), i.e., the highly bioavailable form in aquatic ecosystems. …

Internet-Facilitated Commercial Sexual Exploitation Of Children., Kimberly J. Mitchell, Lisa M. Jones
Crimes Against Children Research Center
This bulletin summarizes findings from the Internet‐Facilitated Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (IF‐CSEC) component of the 2006 Second National Juvenile Online Victimization study. Following are some key findings from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention‐sponsored study: • An estimated 569 arrests for IF‐CSEC were made in the United States in 2006; more than half of the arrests involved the offender marketing and selling child pornography. • Most offenders (83%) purchased child pornography or sex with a minor, but an important minority (17%) profited from the exploitation. Profiteers appeared to be more seasoned offenders who were involved in larger, …

A Topic Detection Approach Through Hierarchical Clustering On Concept Graph, Xiaohui Huang, Xiaofeng Zhang, Yunming Ye, Shengchun Deng, Xutao Li
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Topic detection and tracking (TDT) algorithms have long been developed for the discovery of topics. However, most existing TDT algorithms suffer from paying less attention to: (1) temporal distance between a pair of topics; (2) the mutual effect between highly correlated topic terms. In this paper, we proposed a novel topic detection approach by applying hierarchical clustering on the constructed concept graph (HCCG), which is able to solve aforementioned shortcomings simultaneously. In this approach, the concept is first defined as well as the concept behavior curve. Then, the temporal graph is constructed with concept as vertexes and connected by the …

Nuclear Receptor Coactivators: Regulators Of Steroid Action In Brain And Behavior, Marc J. Tetel, Kalpana D. Acharya
Faculty Research and Scholarship
Steroid hormones act in specific regions of the brain to alter behavior and physiology. While it has been well established that the bioavailability of the steroid and the expression of its receptor is critical to understanding steroid action in brain, the importance of nuclear receptor coactivators in brain is becoming more apparent. This review will focus on the function of the p160 family of coactivators, which includes steroid receptor coactivator-1 (SRC-1), SRC-2 and SRC-3, in steroid receptor action in brain. The expression, regulation and function of these coactivators in steroiddependent gene expression in brain and behavior will be discussed.

Household Wealth And Neurocognitive Development Disparities Among School-Aged Children In Nepal., Shivani A Patel, Laura E Murray-Kolb, Steven C Leclerq, Subarna K Khatry, James M. Tielsch, Joanne Katz, Parul Christian
Global Health Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Wealth disparities in child developmental outcomes are well documented in developed countries. We sought to (1) describe the extent of wealth-based neurocognitive development disparities and (2) examine potential mediating factors of disparities among a population-based cohort of children in rural Nepal.
METHODS: We investigated household wealth-based differences in intellectual, executive and motor function of n = 1692 children aged between 7 and 9 years in Nepal. Using linear mixed models, wealth-based differences were estimated before and after controlling for child and household demographic characteristics. We further examined wealth-based differences adjusted for three sets of mediators: child nutritional status, home …

An Assessment Of Permanent And Nonpermanent Plots In Riparian Vegetation Monitoring, Karin M. Kettenring, Caroline M. Laine, Brett B. Roper
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
The aim of this research was to determine whether permanent and nonpermanent plots for describing riparian plant communities would yield the same results. This research was conducted at 4 streams in central eastern Idaho. Permanent and nonpermanent greenline plots (first perennial vegetation adjacent to stream) were sampled repeatedly from June to October 2010, and we assessed differences between plot types by comparing species richness, wetland indicator rating, and percent cover of live vegetation, forbs, graminoids, litter/moss, and bare ground. We found few statistically significant differences between permanent and nonpermanent greenline plots. Because both types of plots yielded similar results, we …

Comparison Of Parameters Of Lognormal Distribution Based On The Classical And Posterior Estimates, Raja Sultan, S. P. Ahmad
Comparison Of Parameters Of Lognormal Distribution Based On The Classical And Posterior Estimates, Raja Sultan, S. P. Ahmad
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Lognormal distribution is widely used in scientific field, such as agricultural, entomological, biology etc. If a variable can be thought as the multiplicative product of some positive independent random variables, then it could be modelled as lognormal. In this study, maximum likelihood estimates and posterior estimates of the parameters of lognormal distribution are obtained and using these estimates we calculate the point estimates of mean and variance for making comparisons.
Robust Regression Estimators When There Are Tied Values, Rand R. Wilcox, Florence Clark
Robust Regression Estimators When There Are Tied Values, Rand R. Wilcox, Florence Clark
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
It is well known that when using the ordinary least squares regression estimator, outliers among the dependent variable can result in relatively poor power. Many robust regression estimators have been derived that address this problem, but the bulk of the results assume that the dependent variable is continuous. It is demonstrated that when there are tied values, several robust regression estimators can perform poorly in terms of controlling the Type I error probability, even with a large sample size. The presence of tied values does not necessarily mean that they perform poorly, but there is the issue of whether there …
Analysis Of Compactly Supported Transformations For Landmark-Based Image Registration, Roberto Cavoretto, Alessandra De Rossi
Analysis Of Compactly Supported Transformations For Landmark-Based Image Registration, Roberto Cavoretto, Alessandra De Rossi
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper we consider landmark-based image registration using radial basis function interpolation schemes. More precisely, we analyze some landmark-based image transformations using compactly supported radial basis functions such as Wendland’s, Wu’s, and Gneiting’s functions. Comparisons of interpolation techniques are performed and numerical experiments show differences in accuracy and smoothness of them in some test cases. Finally, a real-life case with medical images is considered.

An End-User Tailorable Generic Framework For Privacy-Preserving Location-Based Mobile Applications, Dhiah El Diehn I. Abou-Tair, Mohamed Bourimi, Ricardo Tesoriero, Marcel Heupel, Marcel Heupel, Dogan Kesdogan
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, we discuss the emerging need for supporting end-user tailorability and privacy with respect to collaborative location-based applications in mobile environments. We present a generic privacy-preserving framework for supporting such end-user tailorability on both user interface and server-side ends. The requirements were compiled from various use cases of collaborative location-based scenarios from various projects and related literature. The outcome results of this work demonstrates the feasibility of our proposed framework by means of an iOS based prototype applied to previous iAngle and iFishWatcher research projects. The significance of this prototype that it allows different communities to define their …
