Caver Quest 3d Virtual Cave Simulation Of Snowy River In Fort Stanton Cave, Ronald J. Lipinski, Pete Lindsley
National Cave and Karst Management Symposium 2013
Virtual worlds, or 3D simulations through which an avatar can travel, is becoming a common means to display products or provide training in new environments. This paper describes the steps in producing the 3D virtual simulation of Snowy River in Fort Stanton Cave, New Mexico. A traditional cave survey and map with cross sections was used to produce a 3D meshed surface of the cave walls using the Blender software package. Photographs were taken of the walls, ceiling, and floor and merged together. The merged montage was applied to the 3D mesh walls as a “texture”. Unity3D was used to …

Moving The National Park Service Cave And Karst Program Forward - Identifying And Understanding Park Resources, Dale Pate
National Cave and Karst Management Symposium 2013
On a national level within the National Park Service (NPS), basic knowledge of cave resources has increased significantly over the last 30 years. With karst resources, while there have been some advances, knowledge of these very complex and hidden resources remain fairly limited. In recent years, NPS park managers have increasingly been working with volunteers and scientists to complete studies including the physical exploration and documentation of cave and karst areas to obtain a better understanding of the resources that they manage. Efforts at the national level within the National Cave and Karst Program are being made to know more …

The Nps Cave Visitor Impact Vital Signs Monitoring Protocol, Rodney Horrocks
National Cave and Karst Management Symposium 2013
The national Cave Visitor Impact Vital Signs Monitoring Protocol is an attempt to standardize visitor impact monitoring in all National Park Service managed caves. With standardized monitoring in place, it will be feasible for the first time to compare monitoring data from caves across the country. This cave monitoring protocol was initiated at the NPS Cave Vital Signs Workshop held in Lakewood, Colorado in 2008. That workshop identified the vital signs that were common to all caves, including cave visitor impact. A committee convened at that workshop decided that the cave visitor impact monitoring protocol would address four parameters of …

The freshwater leech, Hirudo medicinalis, is a versatile model organism that has been used to address scientific questions in the fields of neurophysiology, neuroethology, and developmental biology. The goal of this report is to consolidate experimental techniques from the leech system into a single article that will be of use to physiologists with expertise in other nervous system preparations, or to biology students with little or no electrophysiology experience. We demonstrate how to dissect the leech for recording intracellularly from identified neural circuits in the ganglion. Next we show how individual cells of known function can be removed from …

The cockroach ventral nerve cord preparation is a tractable system for neuroethology experiments, neural network modeling, and testing the physiological effects of insecticides. This article describes the scope of cockroach sensory modalities that can be used to assay how an insect nervous system responds to environmental perturbations. Emphasis here is on the escape behavior mediated by cerci to giant fiber transmission in Periplaneta americana. This in situ preparation requires only moderate dissecting skill and electrophysiological expertise to generate reproducible recordings of neuronal activity. Peptides or other chemical reagents can then be applied directly to the nervous system in solution …

Microtubule Severing At Crossover Sites By Katanin Generates Ordered Cortical Microtubule Arrays In Arabidopsis, Quan Zhang, Erica Fishel, Tyler Bertroche, Ram Dixit
Biology Faculty Research
Highlights
- Severing primarily depolymerizes the overlying CMT at crossover sites
- Severing probability increases nonlinearly with crossover time
- Katanin localizes to crossover sites and is required for severing
- Loss of katanin activity prevents the formation of coaligned CMT arrays
Summary
The noncentrosomal cortical microtubules (CMTs) of land plants form highly ordered parallel arrays that mediate cell morphogenesis by orienting cellulose deposition [1, 2 and 3]. Since new CMTs initiate from dispersed cortical sites at random orientations [4], parallel array organization is hypothesized to require selective pruning of CMTs that are not in the dominant orientation. Severing of CMTs at crossover sites …
Tight Void, Brooke Burns
Tight Void, Brooke Burns
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a memoir that draws on the life experience of two promiscuous women, Brooke and Karen. Both characters come from upper-middle class backgrounds, have extremely similar family lives, and take two very different paths in both their education and sexual behavior. While the women both retain their strong friendship throughout the narrative, eventually, Karen, and her decision to become a prostitute, takes its toll. Though they remain supportive of one another, Karen's lifestyle of sex, drugs, and partying begin to create a disconnect between them. This thesis sheds light on the true nature of female promiscuity: its relation …

Improving The Efficiency Of Fall Applied N With Cover Crops, Corey Lacey
Improving The Efficiency Of Fall Applied N With Cover Crops, Corey Lacey
Theses and Dissertations
Nitrate loss studies in Midwestern tile-drained fields have found that fall applied nitrogen (N) resulted in elevated nitrate concentrations in tile water during both the corn and soybean year of a 2 year rotation. The effectiveness of cover crops to reduce nitrate leaching when N is spring applied has been well demonstrated, however there is a dearth of knowledge on the ability of cover crops to reduce nitrate leaching in a system where N is fall applied. Thus, the objectives of this research were to (i) investigate the efficacy of winter cover crops to reduce nitrate leaching from fall applied …

Draft Genome Sequences Of Human Pathogenic Fungus Geomyces Pannorum Sensu Lato And Bat White Nose Syndrome Pathogen Geomyces(Pseudogymnoascus) Destructans, Marcus C. Chibucos, Jonatha Crabtree, Sushma Nagaraj
KIP Articles
We report the draft genome sequences of Geomyces pannorum sensu latoand Geomyces (Pseudogymnoascus) destructans. G. pannorum has a larger proteome than G. destructans, containing more proteins with ascribed enzymatic functions. This dichotomy in the genomes of related psychrophilic fungi is a valuable target for defining their distinct saprobic and pathogenic attributes.

Identifying With The Help: An Examination Of Class, Ethnicity And Gender On A Post-Colonial French Houselot, Erin Nicole Whitson
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to attempt to analyze and interpret an outbuilding located in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, a town established by French settlers in the 1780s. First the functional activities associated with the outbuilding will be determined and examined to best understand where and how the structure fit within the larger property. The activities taking place within/outside the outbuilding--especially those linked to domestic chores--will theoretically paint a clearer picture of who was living and/or working within the structure and who was not. Since little work has been done within the French Mississippi River valley on outbuildings in general, …

The Influence Of Digital Culture In Tectonics And The Language Of Form In Architecture Toyo Ito, Greg Lynn, Patrick Schoumaker, Denada Veizaj, Gjergii Islami
UBT International Conference
The last three decades show how is evolved a complicated relation between architecture and digital technologies, through an absolute skepticism to moments of enthusiasm. The new rhetoric of digital technologies tents to embrace fundamental concepts of architecture, by theorizing another time as in the modern tradition, correlations between form-space-structure. The objective of this paper is to verify the hypothesis which admits that digital culture is changing the relations between space-form and tectonics. In the ambiguous contemporaneity, on the symbioses between spirit and the digital, Toyo Ito’s outcome seems to be the one of the most convincing. This paper tents to …

Horizontal Vs. Vertical Connectivity In Caribbean Reef Corals: Identifying Potential Sources Of Recruitment Following Disturbance, Xaymara M. Serrano
Open Access Dissertations
The extent to which reefs are effectively connected to one another, and their potential to serve as sources of larval replenishment following disturbance, are topics of considerable interest in contemporary reef science. To date, most assessments of reef connectivity have emphasized long-distance horizontal dispersal of propagules from one shallow reef to another. The extent of short-distance vertical connectivity, however, has been largely unquantified. To fill this gap in knowledge, I developed DNA microsatellite loci for two Caribbean depth-generalist coral species with different life-history reproductive strategies (Montastraea cavernosa and Porites astreoides), and assessed connectivity in >1,200 coral samples collected from 3 …
