Effect Of Hinge Region Phosphorylation On The Localization Of Thp1 In Tetrahymena Thermophila, Emily Bulley, Emily Wiley
Effect Of Hinge Region Phosphorylation On The Localization Of Thp1 In Tetrahymena Thermophila, Emily Bulley, Emily Wiley
Scripps Senior Theses
Within the cell nucleus, there are regions of highly condensed, transcriptionally silent chromatin called heterochromatin. Heterochromatin plays an important role in both chromosomal stability and gene regulation within the cell. Heterochromatin assembly is mediated by Heterochromatin Protein 1 (HP1) binding to epigenetically marked histone tails, most notably methylated H3K9. HP1 is post-translationally phosphorylated at serine and threonine residues, and this phosphorylation has been shown to increase HP1’s binding affinity for methylated H3K9 and heterochromatin formation. To study the effect of phosphorylation on heterochromatin assembly and HP1 localization within the nucleus, the unicellular protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila was used. Tetrahymena is an …
Motivation In Athletes With And Without Autism Spectrum Disorder: Sq, Eq And Aq Relationships To Preferred Feedback, Julia C. Harreschou
Motivation In Athletes With And Without Autism Spectrum Disorder: Sq, Eq And Aq Relationships To Preferred Feedback, Julia C. Harreschou
Scripps Senior Theses
All athletes are driven by motivation, sources or reasons to push their bodies to their limits and continue to do so regularly. There have been several studies concerning motivation in typical athletes, and many regarding social motivation in people with High Functioning Autism (HFA), however most have been limited to children, and there have been no investigations into HFA athletes’ motivation. The current study looks into the role of social dimensions in athletics, and tests how one’s gender and placement on the Empathy Questionnaire (EQ), Systemizing Questionnaire (SQ), and on the Autism Questionnaire (AQ) affect intrinsic motivation in athletics. It …

Predicting Groundwater Trading In The Upper Republican Natural Resource District, Elizabeth M. Juchems, Karina A. Schoengold
Predicting Groundwater Trading In The Upper Republican Natural Resource District, Elizabeth M. Juchems, Karina A. Schoengold
Cornhusker Economics
While surface water trading has occurred regularly throughout the Western United States and the rest of the world for decades, the use of any type of groundwater trading has been very limited. However, groundwater is increasingly under stress from overuse and many areas are starting to regulate groundwater use. While the public benefits from efficient use of groundwater include adequate stream flow in hydrologically connected areas and future availability of groundwater supplies, there are significant private benefits to landowners, especially in water short areas. Groundwater trading can help move water from low-value to high-value areas of use. Previous work on …

Impact Of Pre-Columbian Agriculture, Climate Change, And Tectonic Activity Inferred From A 5,700-Year Paleolimnological Record From Lake Nicaragua, Jennifer E. Slate, Thomas C. Johnson, Ted C. Moore
Biology Faculty Publications
Lake Nicaragua, the largest lake in Central America, is a promising site for paleolimnological study of past climate change, tectonic and volcanic activity, and pre-Columbian agriculture in the region. It is near the northern limit of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which brings the rainy season to the tropics, so effects of decreasing precipitation due to southern migration of the ITCZ through the Holocene should be observable. Because fault zones and an active volcano lie within the lake, the long-term impact of tectonic and volcanic activity can also be examined. Finally, the fertile volcanic soils near the lake may have …

Ricean Over Gaussian Modelling In Magnitude Fmri Analysis—Added Complexity With Negligible Practical Benefits, Daniel W. Adrian, Ranjan Maitra, Daniel B. Rowe
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
It is well known that Gaussian modelling of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) magnitude time-course data, which are truly Rice distributed, constitutes an approximation, especially at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Based on this fact, previous work has argued that Rice-based activation tests show superior performance over their Gaussian-based counterparts at low SNRs and should be preferred in spite of the attendant additional computational and estimation burden. Here, we revisit these past studies and, after identifying and removing their underlying limiting assumptions and approximations, provide a more comprehensive comparison. Our experimental evaluations using Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve methodology show that …

Cross‐Campus Collaboration: A Scientometric And Network Case Study Of Publication Activity Across Two Campuses Of A Single Institution, Jeremy Birnholtz, Shion Guha, Y. Connie Yuan, Geri Gay, Caren Heller
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Team science and collaboration have become crucial to addressing key research questions confronting society. Institutions that are spread across multiple geographic locations face additional challenges. To better understand the nature of cross‐campus collaboration within a single institution and the effects of institutional efforts to spark collaboration, we conducted a case study of collaboration at Cornell University using scientometric and network analyses. Results suggest that cross‐campus collaboration is increasingly common, but is accounted for primarily by a relatively small number of departments and individual researchers. Specific researchers involved in many collaborative projects are identified, and their unique characteristics are described. Institutional …

Background: eQTL analysis is a powerful method that allows the identification of causal genomic alterations, providing an explanation of expression changes of single genes. However, genes mediate their biological roles in groups rather than in isolation, prompting us to extend the concept of eQTLs to whole gene pathways. Methods: We combined matched genomic alteration and gene expression data of glioblastoma patients and determined associations between the expression of signaling pathways and genomic copy number alterations with a non-linear machine learning approach. Results: Expectedly, over-expressed pathways were largely associated to tag-loci on chromosomes with signature alterations. Surprisingly, tag-loci that were associated …
A Proposal For A Problem-Driven Mathematics Curriculum Framework, Judith S. Zawojewski, Marta Magiera, Richard Lesh
A Proposal For A Problem-Driven Mathematics Curriculum Framework, Judith S. Zawojewski, Marta Magiera, Richard Lesh
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
A framework for a problem-driven mathematics curriculum is proposed, grounded in the assumption that students learn mathematics while engaged in complex problem-solving activity. The framework is envisioned as a dynamic technologicallydriven multi-dimensional representation that can highlight the nature of the curriculum (e.g., revealing the relationship among modeling, conceptual, and procedural knowledge), can be used for programmatic, classroom and individual assessment, and can be easily revised to reflect ongoing changes in disciplinary knowledge development and important applications of mathematics. The discussion prompts ideas and questions for future development of the envisioned software needed to enact such a framework.

Equity On The Extended Continental Shelf? How An Obscure Provision In Unclos Provides New Challenges For Ocean Governance, Aldo Chircop
Reports & Public Policy Documents
One of the major novelties of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, 1982 is the legitimizing of coastal State claims to large areas of continental margins in all oceans by virtue of Article 76. In addition to exclusive economic zones (EEZs) of 200 nautical miles, coastal States whose continental margins extend beyond the EEZ limit are able to further claim the seabed and subsoil beyond the EEZ limit to 350 nautical miles from the base lines of the territorial sea or 100 nautical miles from the 2,500 metre isobath. The UN Convention established a procedure for …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The production of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) has rapidly increased due to their wide range of applications in the field of electronics, medicine, chemistry and biology. Consequently, concerns have risen about the environmental release and potential negative impact of NPs. A few reports have described the effects of TiO2 NPs and quantum dots upon nitrogen fixing bacteria. However, the understanding of the interaction of NPs in plant-microbe interface (symbiotic association), like alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.)-Sinorhizobium meliloti, is still in its infancy. Alfalfa is the world's most important forage crop. It grows in association with S. meliloti, which is very important in …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The oceans play significant roles in maintaining the climate on Earth and providing nutrients to the whole biosphere. Oceanic microbes produce approximately half of the Earth's oxygen. It has been shown that the populations of microbial communities in oceans are largely regulated by viral infection and thus affect the marine ecosystem. Cafeteria roenbergensis Virus (CroV) is a giant marine virus with a linear, double stranded, and AT-rich DNA genome. The genome of CroV has a size of 744kb and encodes for 544 predicted genes. CroV derived its name from its host, a unicellular marine zooplankton Cafeteria roenbergensis (Cro) that is …
Post-Pareto Optimality Methods For The Analysis Of Large Pareto Sets In Multi-Objective Optimization, Victor Manuel Carrillo
Post-Pareto Optimality Methods For The Analysis Of Large Pareto Sets In Multi-Objective Optimization, Victor Manuel Carrillo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Multiple objective optimization involves the simultaneous optimization of more than one, possibly conflicting, objectives. Multiple objective optimization problems arise in a variety of real-world applications. In general, the main difference between single and multi-objective optimization is that in multi-objective optimization there is usually no single optimal solution, but a set of equally good alternatives with different trade-offs, also known as Pareto-optimal solutions. There are two general approaches to solve multiple objective optimization problems: mathematical methods and meta-heuristic methods. The first approach involves the aggregation of the attributes into a linear combination of the objective functions, also known as scalarization. The …

Stress Appraisal, Coping Response, And Acculturation Level As Predictors Of Postpartum Depression Symptoms In Women Of Mexican Origin, Rena M. Digregorio
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Transition into motherhood may be a time of mixed emotion. Though most women embrace motherhood and are optimistic about the role, approximately 13% of all women who give birth suffer from postpartum depression (Beck, C.T., 2001; Beck, C.T., 1996; O'Hara & Swain, 1996). However, some studies report women of Mexican origin suffer postpartum depressive symptoms at much higher rates than other racial and ethnic groups (Diaz, Huynh-Nhu, Cooper, & Munoz, 2007). Understanding how and to what extent postpartum depressive symptoms affect mothers of Mexican origin remains incomplete. This 10 month prospective, repeated measures, proxy pretest study of pregnant and postpartum …
