This paper reviews the literature on moults and resulting appearances of the Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis; LTDU), focusing on the high degree of plumage variation observed in this species, which is unique among ducks. In addition to exhibiting three visibly different plumages in its first year of life, and two visibly different plumages every year thereafter, the LTDU also shows a high variation among individuals, due, at least in part, to individual variation in the prolongation of each moult. Loafing And Sleeping Behaviour Of Trumpeter Swans, Harry G. Lumsden, Gerry Markhoff, Gary Lane, Allan Scott

An observational study of loafing and sleeping behaviour of Trumpeter Swans was conducted in southern Ontario throughout the year in 2018 and 2019. Like other birds, these swans have the ability to close down one brain hemisphere at a time during rest, which is indicated by eye closure. We quantified rates of closure of eyes during sleeping bouts for both breeding and non-breeding swans. Single eye closure varied in frequency, duration and in terms of which hemisphere was shut down. Increasing duration of eye closure over time indicated an increased sense of security with surrounding in one mated pair. Proportion …

Populations of many breeding marsh bird species continue to decline in the southern Great Lakes basin, although this is not the case for the threatened Least Bittern. Recent analysis based on data from the Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program of Birds Canada shows that its abundance has increased consistently since the mid-2000s throughout the lower Great Lakes in the U.S. and Canada, with the highest abundance occurring in recent years. In this study, we expanded on these findings by assessing patterns in abundance of Least Bitterns among different geographical locations in Ontario and across years from 1995 to 2019. We …

In Canada, emergency departments have a large number of patients with mental health and substance use concerns passing through their doors. Our research aim was to assess the impact that therapy dog visits may have for patients presenting with mental health and/or substance use concerns to an emergency department based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Working alongside an active patient advisory group and community-based therapy dog program volunteers, our mixed method approach utilizing ethnography, surveys, and interviews showed that therapy dog visitation had a beneficial impact on both patients and staff, thus improving the overall patient experience. Monotone Positive Solutions Of Impulsive Differential Equations Asymptotic To Nonprincipal Solutions, Si̇bel Doğru Akgöl, Ağacik Zafer

This study investigates the asymptotic behavior of monotone positive solutions for a general class of nonlinear second-order impulsive differential equations. By employing the principal and nonprincipal solutions of the associated homogeneous equation, we establish the existence of a monotone positive solution asymptotic to a nonprincipal solution at infinity. To achieve this, we also prove a compactness criterion for an effective use of Schauder’s fixed-point theorem. Under suitable conditions, similarly to the classical case, it is demonstrated that a monotone positive solution asymptotic to a nonprincipal solution exists. A concrete example is given to illustrate the results.

Despite the prevalence and toxicity of heavy metals in the environment, arsenic and cobalt are of particular concern due to their high mobility and bioaccumulation potential, particularly in contaminated groundwater. Herein, we studied the adsorption behavior of commercially available sorbents, including Fluorosorb-100 (FS-100), Fluorosorb-200 (FS-200), and Filtrasorb-400 (F-400), for the removal of arsenite (As(III)) and cobalt (Co(II)), aiming at the selection of filter media in terms of future groundwater remediation. Kinetic analysis revealed that As(III) adsorption followed a pseudo-second-order model, while Co(II) showed mixed first- and second-order behavior, reflecting sorbent-dependent mechanisms. The red-fronted brown lemur (Eulemur rufifrons) is an important species to the function of Madagascar’s ecosystems, contributing to critical ecological processes such as seed dispersal. Given its ecological, as well as cultural, importance, genomic resources for E. rufifrons are valuable for understanding evolutionary history and informing conservation strategies. In this study, we present an annotated chromosome-level genome assembly for E. rufifrons, generated using PacBio HiFi long reads and Hi-C proximity ligation data, and demonstrate its utility for understanding patterns of divergence among members of the genus Eulemur. This BPG replaces the RNAO BPG Person- and Family-Centred Care (2015) (22), and includes the combination of two other BPGs, Establishing Therapeutic Relationships (2006) (23) and Strengthening and Supporting Families through Expected and Unexpected Life Events (2006) (24). These BPGs were merged because of the overlapping clinical concepts. Additionally, RNAO’s Best Practice Spotlight Organizations® (BPSO®)G provided feedback that merging the three would streamline the implementation and evaluation of the BPGs.

Introduction: Depressive symptoms are common in the growing geriatric surgical population and are associated with important patient-centred surgical outcomes, including postoperative delirium, discharge to postacute care facility and decline in functional status. Few interventions have been developed to address depressive symptoms in the perioperative setting.

Methods and analysis: We designed a feasibility and acceptability study of a nine-session problem-solving therapy (PST) telehealth perioperative intervention aimed at reducing postoperative functional decline and depressive symptoms among at-risk older adults undergoing major surgical procedures. Approximately 400,000 children in the Child Welfare System have an average of more than three placement disruptions while in care in what is termed placement instability (PI). PI is a known toxin to children’s neurodevelopment that predisposes them to a life of poor behavioral outcomes. Previous research shows that foster parents dissatisfied with their carer role contributed to PI by quitting or terminating a child’s placement.
