Masculinity And Sexual Violence: Comparison Between Japan And The United States, Kei Saito
Masculinity And Sexual Violence: Comparison Between Japan And The United States, Kei Saito
Master's Theses and Capstones
Japan has received considerable attention in the field of criminology in its unique features, such as its low crime rate. Available research seems to suggest that the Japanese rate of sexual violence, like other crimes, is equally lower compared to the United States. The present study examines the potential influence of gender construction on sexual violence, building upon previous research on the Confluence Model of Sexual Aggression by Malamuth and his colleagues. Data from the General Social Survey in the United States and Japan were used to compare elements that relate to gender roles, gender identity, and sexual behavior to …
The Dilemma Of Response Among Early Childhood Educators To Rough-And Tumble Play In Educational Settings: Moving Beyond Expectations And Rediscovering Play, Carrie L. Smart
Master's Theses and Capstones
Early childhood educators often may struggle to find appropriate responses to rough-and-tumble play due to its unpredictable and risky nature. This case study examines the challenge of how two early childhood special educators in two inclusive public preschool classrooms make decisions about rough-and-tumble play for 4-year-old children. The stories presented are descriptive and based in an ecological context. Through the triangulation of interview, anecdotal observations, and frequency counts, three major themes of Teacher Beliefs, Context, and Teacher Reflection and Awareness emerged, illustrating the complex phenomenon of teacher response to rough-and-tumble play in inclusive settings. Analysis of the data revealed that …
Climate Change, Consequentialism, And The Road Ahead, Dale Jamieson
Climate Change, Consequentialism, And The Road Ahead, Dale Jamieson
Chicago Journal of International Law
In this paper I tell the story of the evolution of the climate change regime, locating its origins in "the dream of Rio," which supposed that the nations of the world would join in addressing the interlocking crises of environment and development. I describe the failure at Copenhagen and then go on to discuss the "reboot" of the climate negotiations advocated by Eric A. Posner and David Weisbach. I bring out some ambiguities in their notion of International Paretianism, which is supposed to effectively limit the influence of moral ideals in international affairs, and pose a dilemma. I go on …

Individual And Population Responses Of The Caribbean Sponge, Aplysina Cauliformis, To Natural And Anthropogenic Stressors, Cole Gregory Easson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Coral reefs are under increasing threat from a diversity of stressors. These reefs have undergone a phase shift from coral-dominated to algal-dominated ecosystems, and in many cases other functional groups such as sponges are now the predominant organisms on many reefs. This dissertation investigated the responses of a combranching sponge, Aplysina cauliformis, to algal contact, eutrophication, hurricanes, and disease. The effects of algal competition, anthropogenic nutrients and a combination of these stressors on A. cauliformis were examined using factorial designed field experiments on Bahamian reefs. These experiments demonstrated a complex interaction between sponge and alga, in which the green alga, …

Influence Of Salicylic Acid On Phytochelatin Synthesis In Zea Mays During Cd Stress, Gabriella Szalai, Alexander Krantev, Rusina Yordanova, Losanka Petrova Popova, Tibor Janda
Turkish Journal of Botany
Presoaking maize (Zea mays) seeds in salicylic acid (SA) reduces damage caused by cadmium. In the present work the possible role of phytochelatins (PCs) in SA-mediated protection against Cd toxicity was investigated. Seeds were presoaked in 0.5 mM SA, and seedlings were grown in hydroponic solution containing 0, 0.01, 0.015, or 0.025 mM Cd. Treatment with Cd increased the PC levels in maize roots, but only slight changes were observed in the leaves. Long-term exposure to Cd decreased the phytochelatin synthase (PCS) activity in the roots and led to an increase in PCS and glutathione reductase (GR) activities in maize …
Assessing The Habitat Use, Diet, And Sex Ratios Of Atlantic (Acipenser Oxyrinchus) And Shortnose Sturgeon (Acipenser Brevirostrum) In The Saco River, Me, Caitlyn Little
All Theses And Dissertations
Due to the questionable status of sturgeon populations along the east coast of the United States, there has been considerable research focus on these species in recent years. Previous studies have overlooked the Saco River as an important habitat for sturgeon in the Gulf of Maine. However, the incidental capture of a sturgeon in the Saco River in the fall of 2007 raised questions about the presence of this species and the role that the Saco River might play in the life cycle of these fish. The goals of this thesis were to evaluate the utilization of this habitat by …

Calcifying Nanoparticles As Novel Etiologic Agents Of Idiopathic Preterm Birth And Preterm Premature Rupture Of The Membranes, Lydia Shook
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Preterm birth (PTB) is a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. In many cases, preterm birth is preceded by preterm premature rupture of the membranes (PPROM) without any identifiable cause. Pathological calcification, i.e. the deposition of hydroxyapatite (HA) in non-skeletal tissue, has been implicated in degenerative diseases of soft tissue, such as atherosclerosis. Multiple pathogenic mechanisms have been described, including the aberrant aggregation of HA into calcifying nanoparticles (CNPs) and the HA-induced differentiation of mesenchymal cells into osteoblasts in a process called ectopic osteogenesis. The objective of this thesis was to explore the possibility that CNPs form in human …
Urinary Biomarkers And Association With Recovery From Severe Aki, Rahul Agarwal
Urinary Biomarkers And Association With Recovery From Severe Aki, Rahul Agarwal
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Few studies have examined the ability of urinary biomarkers to associate with recovery from acute kidney injury (AKI), a common complication for hospitalized patients that is independently associated with severe morbidity and mortality. We hypothesized that urinary biomarkers of kidney injury (NGAL, IL-18) or repair (YKL-40) would be associated with renal recovery in patients with severe AKI.
We prospectively enrolled 48 patients admitted at Yale New Haven Hospital with severe AKI (AKIN Stage 3). Daily morning urine samples were collected (until recovery up to max of 9 days). Levels of urinary YKL-40, NGAL, and IL-18 were measured. The primary exposures …

Methods: Between January 2000 and December 2009, 36 patients at Yale-New Haven Hospital age 65 years and older with newly diagnosed AML received standard induction chemotherapy (n=11), decitabine therapy (n=11), or supportive care only (n=14). Data obtained included baseline characteristics, achievement of remission, overall survival, inpatient and outpatient visits, and early death.
Results: When compared to standard induction chemotherapy, decitabine patients were significantly older (77 vs 69 years, P = .020) …
Natural History Of Tricuspid Regurgitant Jet Velocity And A New Association With Proteinuria In Children With Sickle Cell Disease, Suzanne Jaqueth Forrest
Natural History Of Tricuspid Regurgitant Jet Velocity And A New Association With Proteinuria In Children With Sickle Cell Disease, Suzanne Jaqueth Forrest
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Given the morbidity and mortality associated with pulmonary hypertension and progressive renal failure in sickle cell disease, recognition of both organ dysfunctions during childhood should allow for improved management of patients and early treatment for both. The definitive diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension is made on cardiac catheterization, however measurement of tricuspid regurgitant jet velocity (TRV) on echocardiogram can be used to estimate pulmonary artery systolic pressures and can be used as a screening modality for pulmonary hypertension. Pulmonary hypertension is defined as TRV ≥2.5m/sec and occurs in 16-30% of children with sickle cell disease on screening echocardiograms. Two studies were …
Altered Circulating Follicular Helper T Cell Phenotype In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Hsi-En Ho
Altered Circulating Follicular Helper T Cell Phenotype In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Hsi-En Ho
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Autoreactive B cells in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) undergo autoantigen selection, suggesting a requirement for germinal center follicular helper T (Tfh) cells in their maturation. However, evidence for dysregulation of Tfh cells in SLE and their contribution to disease activity remains unclear. Recently, blood CXCR5hi CD4 T cells, a heterogeneous pool consisting of functionally distinct Th1-, Th2-, Th17-like subsets, have been proposed to be the circulating counterpart of Tfh cells. The purpose of this study was to examine the hypothesis that Tfh dysregulation, as reflected in altered phenotype of blood CXCR5hi population, was associated with SLE disease activity. Blood samples …
Novel Strategies In The Prevention And Treatment Of Childhood Obesity: The Importance Of Lifestyle Counseling And Psychological Resiliency, Stacey Kallem
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Efforts to prevent and treat childhood obesity have had only modest results. Novel strategies are needed. The aims and hypotheses of this thesis are to: 1) Document the self-reported receipt of lifestyle counseling from physicians and other health care providers by BMI status. We hypothesize that despite recommendations for universal lifestyle counseling, few children will be counseled by their health care providers, though children who are obese will report receiving the most counseling. 2) Test the hypothesis that psychological resiliency (i.e., "shift and persist") protects low socioeconomic status children from obesity. Physical assessments and health surveys were collected from two …
Biological And Clinical Markers Of Neuronal Injury In Primary And Chronic Hiv-1 Infection, Michael Peluso
Biological And Clinical Markers Of Neuronal Injury In Primary And Chronic Hiv-1 Infection, Michael Peluso
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The use of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has shifted the neurological manifestations of HIV-1 infection toward mild but debilitating HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND). Through two studies, we sought to characterize neuronal injury during primary and chronic HIV infection and to describe its relationship with HAND.
The aim of the first study was to quantify cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and neuroimaging biomarkers of neuronal injury in primary HIV infection (PHI). We compared CSF levels of neurofilament light chain (NFL), tau, and amyloid proteins in 92 subjects with PHI and 25 controls and examined relationships with disease progression and neuroinflammation, neuropsychological testing, and proton-magnetic …
Spatial Distribution Of Alitta Virens And Clymenella Torquata With Respect To Rigid Boundaries In Mud And Sand, Kevin T. Du Clos, Sara M. Lindsay, Peter A. Jumars
Spatial Distribution Of Alitta Virens And Clymenella Torquata With Respect To Rigid Boundaries In Mud And Sand, Kevin T. Du Clos, Sara M. Lindsay, Peter A. Jumars
Journal of Marine Research
Recent advances in understanding of sediment material properties and of burrowing mechanics suggest likely differences in the behavior of organisms burrowing in mud and sand. The path of least resistance in the mud may lead an infaunal organism to burrow along a rigid wall. By contrast, in sand, force chains may prevent a burrowing organism from reaching a rigid wall. Burrowing in mud occurs primarily by the propagation of cracks. Cracks, and hence burrows, tend to propagate along rigid walls. In sand, force chains comprise collections of particles that experience much more stress than their neighbors. Stress chains tend to …
Instability Of A Tidal Mixing Front In The Presence Of Realistic Tides And Mixing, K. H. Brink
Instability Of A Tidal Mixing Front In The Presence Of Realistic Tides And Mixing, K. H. Brink
Journal of Marine Research
Instability and lateral eddy fluxes associated with a tidal mixing front are studied using idealized primitive equation numerical model runs. The front itself develops as a result of turbulence associated with imposed tidal currents over a sloping bottom. Thus, the model includes realistic levels of turbulence and time-dependence in the base-state conditions. In all of the 21 configurations considered, the front is unstable to fluctuations that usually draw energy primarily from the potential energy pool. Scalings are developed to parameterize a) the location of the tidal mixing front; b) the eddy kinetic energy; and c) the lateral eddy coefficients. In …

We Are Always Already Imprisoned: Hyper-Incarceration And Black Male Identity Performance, Frank Rudy Cooper
Scholarly Works
In this Essay, Professor Frank Rudy Cooper recenters the experiences of men of color, particularly those of black men, in light of Reagan's War on Drugs and recent scholarship illustrating the over-representation of men of color in prison for petty drug use. The mainstream's depiction of black men as always already imprisoned disciplines us into the never-finished quest to prove we are a "Good Black Man," rather than a "Bad Black Man." In order to propose greater empathy for black men's imprisonment, this article proceeds in the following manner. In Part I, Professor Cooper sets the stage for considering the …

This article describes the masculine culture in law firms and analyzes how this culture harms both men and women because of their gender. Part II explains MMT, and analyzes the masculine practices that exist in modern law firms. Part III studies a lawsuit brought by a law firm associate, a white male father of two who allegedly was fired in retaliation for taking leave under the Family Medical Leave Act and because of his failure to adhere to the macho stereotypes prevalent in the law firm. Part IV analyzes how the law should respond to masculine norms, and suggests that …

This Essay focuses on gender and sexuality to analyze Hannah Rosin's thesis in the The End of Men. It relies in large part on feminist and masculinities theories to consider how men and women may both suffer gendered disadvantage. It looks specifically at Las Vegas, a market that is sexualized, in order to complicate Rosin's narrative, and to create a better understanding of what is happening in the U.S. workforce. While the Las Vegas market is not representative of markets across the country, it is economically and socially significant and, with the expansion of the casino and gaming industries …

Comparison Of Intra Individual Physiological Sway Complexity From Force Plate And Inertial Measurement Unit, Rahul Soangra, Thurmon E. Lockhart
Comparison Of Intra Individual Physiological Sway Complexity From Force Plate And Inertial Measurement Unit, Rahul Soangra, Thurmon E. Lockhart
Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Center of Pressure (COP) is a clinical measure to investigate the effect of sensory input disturbances on postural stability in healthy, old population as well in people suffering from neuromuscular disease. Increased center of pressure velocity and sway area are interpreted as decreased stability or poor balance and are associated with fall risk. Body mounted inertial sensors have shown great promise as an easily implemented clinical measure of balance. The aim of the present study is to investigate if force plate and accelerometer measurements provide similar physiological information when approximate entropy (ApEn) are valuated from the time series. Seven Young …

Since Michael Pollan popularized the push to eat local food in his bestseller, The Omnivore’s Dilemma, the concept of “food miles” has been something of a rallying cry and an organizing principle in the marketing of the local food movement. Among locavores and their sympathizers, the term seems to encapsulate all that is wrong with the food system. Fresh grapes from Chile make their way to supermarkets from Maine to Minnesota, and even California. Major food conglomerates process commodity ingredients like corn, soy, and wheat into packaged food that travels across the country and across oceans before landing on …

"Through the Eyes of Jurors" is the first law journal article to consider all of the major cognitive psychology studies that examine how "schemas," or the preexisting notions jurors have about the law, shape jurors' use of jury instructions, even when those jurors are given "plain-language" instructions. This Article examines the social science research on schema theory in order to advance our understanding of how schemas continue to influence jurors' use of jury instructions, even when those jurors are given "plain language" instructions.
A significant body of legal literature has examined jurors' use and understanding of jury instructions, and many …
