Daughters' Perception Of Parental Gender Disappointment In Relationship To Eating Disorders, Carolyn S. Bloye Jan 2013

Daughters' Perception Of Parental Gender Disappointment In Relationship To Eating Disorders, Carolyn S. Bloye

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The impact of familial relationships, as both protective and risk factors, on the development and treatment of eating disorders (ED) is a frequent topic of research (Cordero & Israel, 2009 Enten & Golan, 2009). However, Parental Gender Disappointment (PGD) as related to ED is one family dynamic that has not been studied. PGD may occur when a child is not born the gender of their parent's prenatal preference and the negative impact it can have on the child has been demonstrated (Stattin, 1991). This study sought to examine the potential relationship between Perceived Parental Gender Disappointment (PPGD) and ED through …

Effect Of Religiosity And Combat Exposure To Predict Combat Service Member Posttraumatic Growth, Kurt C. Webb

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The purpose of this study is to investigate 2 research questions: Do pre-deployment religiosity among combat military service members and level of combat exposure predict posttraumatic growth? And, do the level of combat exposure and changes in religiosity predict posttraumatic growth in combat military service members? The sample was obtained from an archival data set (Orton, 2012) was a group of male National Guard infantry deployed to the war in Iraq (N = 75). Participants were given pre- and post-deployment measures 1 month before and 6 months after returning from the Iraq war. Four regression equations were used to predict …

The Relationship Of Shame In The Treatment Of Antepartum Depression, Pennie F. Wilson Jan 2013

The Relationship Of Shame In The Treatment Of Antepartum Depression, Pennie F. Wilson

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The purpose of this pilot study was to determine the relationship between shame, Antepartum Depression, and treatment seeking. Research shows that shame plays a role in Major Depression and other disorders. For the present study, the first hypothesis was that shame is positively correlated with Antepartum Depression as measured by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. The second hypothesis was that shame would be negatively correlated with treatment seeking behaviors. The third hypothesis was that psychoeducation about Antepartum Depression could lower the level of shame and increase treatment seeking behavior. This study consisted of using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale to …

The Effect Of College Student Spirituality On Alcohol Use And Sexual Behaviors: A Comparison Of Faith-Based And Non Faith-Based Institutional Ncha Data, Kristen S. Miller Jan 2013

The Effect Of College Student Spirituality On Alcohol Use And Sexual Behaviors: A Comparison Of Faith-Based And Non Faith-Based Institutional Ncha Data, Kristen S. Miller

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

College-aged individuals have a significant impact on national health. People in this age group have the highest rates of engagement in many risky health behaviors, such as binge drinking, substance use, and engaging in unprotected sexual activity. The American College Health Association (ACHA) has been actively involved in the study of college health behavior and the initiation of information and services to college health care providers for the past decade. However, little research has been done in this area on sub-populations of the overall college population. This study aims to assess the sub-population of students who attend a faith-based institution. …

Some Current Topics In Plant Domestication: An Overview With Particular Reference To Amazonia, Barbara Pickersgill Jan 2013

Some Current Topics In Plant Domestication: An Overview With Particular Reference To Amazonia, Barbara Pickersgill

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Amazonia offers some striking contrasts to better-known regions of the world, notably the Middle East, in which plants were domesticated. These contrasts are pertinent to attempts to formulate general principles of evolution under domestication, particularly now that some of these are being critically reexamined. Topics covered in this paper include a generally applicable definition of plant domestication; how domestication may be recognised archaeobotanically; the relative roles of conscious and unconscious human selection; when and how rapidly domestication occurred; whether the same crop was domesticated more than once; and where a crop was domesticated. The archaeobotanical record for Amazonia and the …

Domestication Of Peach Palm In Southwestern Amazonia, Michelly De Cristo-Araújo, Vanessa Maciel Dos Reis, Doriane Picanço Rodrigues, Charles R. Clement Jan 2013

Domestication Of Peach Palm In Southwestern Amazonia, Michelly De Cristo-Araújo, Vanessa Maciel Dos Reis, Doriane Picanço Rodrigues, Charles R. Clement

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

The peach palm (Bactris gasipaes Kunth) is the only Neotropical palm domesticated by Native Americans. Its place of origin as a crop (B. gasipaes var. gasipaes) has been debated for more than a century, with three hypotheses currently in discussion: southwestern Amazonia; northwestern South America; or multiple origins in the distribution of the wild relatives (B. gasipaes var. chichagui). The small amount of archaeological data available supports the second hypothesis, but they contrast dramatically with the molecular-genetic analyses that support the first or the third, depending on how they are interpreted. On morphological grounds, two of the three types of …

Genetic Diversity And Differentiation Of Brazilian Bitter And Sweet Manioc Varieties (Manihot Esculenta Crantz, Euphorbiaceae) Based On Ssr Molecular Markers, Gilda Santos Mühlen, Alessandro Alves-Pereira, Charles R. Clement, Teresa Losada Valle Jan 2013

Genetic Diversity And Differentiation Of Brazilian Bitter And Sweet Manioc Varieties (Manihot Esculenta Crantz, Euphorbiaceae) Based On Ssr Molecular Markers, Gilda Santos Mühlen, Alessandro Alves-Pereira, Charles R. Clement, Teresa Losada Valle

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Manioc (Manihot esculenta Crantz) originated in Amazonia and is the main staple for more than 800 million people worldwide; it also had a fundamental role as a source of calories for many pre-Columbian peoples, especially in Amazonia, where it was domesticated. There are two major groups of manioc varieties: sweet varieties have low amounts of toxic substances (cyanogenic glycosides) and may be consumed with minimum processing, while bitter varieties have a high degree of toxicity and must be detoxified to be safe before consumption. These groups are outcomes of divergent selective pressures. Natural selection probably maintains large amounts of cyanogenic …

Born Lost: Stateless Children In International Surrogacy Arrangements, Tina Lin Jan 2013

Born Lost: Stateless Children In International Surrogacy Arrangements, Tina Lin

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note examines the legal and humanitarian challenges posed by statelessness in children born through international surrogacy arrangements, particularly in countries like India and Ukraine, where lax regulations and conflicting nationality laws create legal limbo for surrogate children. It argues that the best interests of the child should guide legal reforms and judicial decisions to prevent statelessness and ensure citizenship rights. The analysis emphasizes the need for domestic and international legal frameworks to address the gaps in nationality acquisition and surrogacy regulation.

Confirmation Of Allelopathic Chemicals From Reed Canarygrass (Phalaris Arundinacea L.) Roots, Alexander Richard Tomes

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Reed Canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea) is an invasive species and a major threat to grasslands and natural wetlands on nearly every landmass (Morrison and Molofsky 1998). Methanol extracts of whole and macerated Reed Canarygrass roots have been found to reduce the germination and growth of lettuce (Lactuca sativa), radish (Raphanus sativus), and the aquatic plant, Reed Mannagrass (Glyceria maxima) (Veit and Proctor 2009). Linoleic, linolenic and palmitic acids were identified in the methanol extracts of both the whole and macerated Reed Canarygrass roots (Proctor 2011). The purpose of this research was to determine if these chemicals individually and in combination would …

Urban Growth Patterns And Effectiveness Of The Metropolitan Urban Service Areas In Woodbury, Minnesota, Danielle Thomas Jan 2013

Urban Growth Patterns And Effectiveness Of The Metropolitan Urban Service Areas In Woodbury, Minnesota, Danielle Thomas

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This study evaluates the effectiveness of a specific urban sprawl containment strategy called the Metropolitan Urban Service Areas (MUSA). MUSA was developed for Minneapolis/St. Paul in order to ensure organized and practical development in areas that already had pre-built roads and sewer system infrastructures. Currently, MUSA is not an urban boundary; its specific goal is to, "synchronize urban growth with the provision of infrastructure needed to accommodate growth" (Council, August 2006). To evaluate the rigidity of the MUSA boundaries, the sample years of 1990, 2000, 2010 and the projected 2020 boundaries were subjected to spatial analysis utilizing three different software …

A Descriptive Research Study On Law Enforcement's Eyewitness Identification Procedures, Lynn Slaughter Jan 2013

A Descriptive Research Study On Law Enforcement's Eyewitness Identification Procedures, Lynn Slaughter

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Theses

Annually, mistaken identifications lead to thousands of wrongful convictions and missed opportunities to catch guilty persons. Researchers rely on decades of exploration to recommend identification procedures to law enforcement. Several jurisdictions have recently standardized identification procedures.

This descriptive research investigated two photographic line-up variables: whether witnesses viewed photographs sequentially or simultaneously, and was the presentation singleor double-blind. Researchers agree lineups should be administered double-blind to decrease administrator influence. Experts debate the sequential format; mistaken identifications are decreased, as are correct identifications. Many experts recommend the sequential format.

This study mailed 1016 law enforcement agencies employing 100 or more officers a …

Evaluating Phenotypic Differences Between High Tunnel Tomato Cultivars And The Functional Role Of Diversity In A Broccoli - Living Mulch Agroecostytem, Nicholas Warren Jan 2013

Evaluating Phenotypic Differences Between High Tunnel Tomato Cultivars And The Functional Role Of Diversity In A Broccoli - Living Mulch Agroecostytem, Nicholas Warren

Master's Theses and Capstones

Recently, there has been a growing effort to increase the availability of locally grown food in New England, and the ecological and socioeconomic impacts of these changes require careful consideration. This work consists of two experiments evaluating typical food production systems in New England. The high tunnel tomato cultivar trial evaluates indeterminate beefsteak tomatoes for important phenotypic differences. Understanding these differences will aid in the selection of different cultivars of tomatoes for local growers. Increasing the intraspecific diversity of high tunnel tomatoes may help balance the tradeoffs observed between cultivars. The broccoli-living mulch experiment is an evaluation of the competitive …

Observations Of Pockmark Flow Structure In Belfast Bay, Maine, Christina L. Fandel Jan 2013

Observations Of Pockmark Flow Structure In Belfast Bay, Maine, Christina L. Fandel

Master's Theses and Capstones

Vertical current and CTD profiles were acquired over a small, spherical pockmark and a larger, more elongated pockmark in Belfast Bay, Maine in July 2011. These observations showed evidence for mixing within the pockmarks, a rotational pattern that resembles open cavity flow, and incipient motion along the rims. Over the center of each pockmark, observations of uniform temperature properties below 12 m are indicative of mixing within the pockmark. The observed complex rotational structure over each pockmark shows significant rotation with depth and a greater degree of rotation during ebbing tide. These observations are qualitatively consistent with circulation patterns predicted …

Covalent Attachment Of A Diimine Tricarbonyl Re(I) Catalyst On Solid State Nano-Material Surfaces For Solar Carbon Dioxide Reduction, He He Jan 2013

Covalent Attachment Of A Diimine Tricarbonyl Re(I) Catalyst On Solid State Nano-Material Surfaces For Solar Carbon Dioxide Reduction, He He

Master's Theses and Capstones

Reduction of carbon dioxide to useful chemicals and fuels is of significant interest. Transition metal complexes, such as tricarbonyl rhenium(I) compounds, are efficient molecular catalysts for photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction. To improve the stability and catalytic activity of homogeneous catalysts, a mesoporous silica material, SBA-15, was synthesized and applied as catalyst support for immobilizing the tricarbonyl rhenium(I) compound via both covalent bonding and physical adsorption. The covalently bonded tricarbonyl rhenium(I) catalyst in SBA-15 exhibited excellent stability and good activity during the photocatalytic reduction process, compared with its homogeneous counterpart and the physically absorbed one. Another solid-state nano-material, Kaolin, was also …

Trans Women And Aging: A Qualitative Study, Martha B. Leighton Jan 2013

Trans Women And Aging: A Qualitative Study, Martha B. Leighton

Master's Theses and Capstones

Data from interviews with 11 transgender women ages 55 to 77 were used to examine the experiences of gender-diverse individuals throughout the lifespan. Specifically, qualitative methods were used to examine how participants had experienced discrimination, developed strengths and resiliencies as a response to discrimination, and employed strategies predicted by Hobfoll's Conservation of Resources Theory. Focused coding of the data revealed significant and pervasive discrimination in multiple settings and throughout the participants' lives. The data also, however, revealed a wide range of strengths and resiliencies and indicated that participants employed a variety of strategies that allowed them to amass, maintain, and …

Characterizing Winter Flounder (Pseudopleuronectes Americanus) Nursery Areas Using Otolith Microstructure And Microchemical Techniques, David Bailey Jan 2013

Characterizing Winter Flounder (Pseudopleuronectes Americanus) Nursery Areas Using Otolith Microstructure And Microchemical Techniques, David Bailey

Master's Theses and Capstones

A preliminary study, using young-of-the-year winter flounder from 12 nursery areas from New Jersey to New Hampshire, evaluated indirect and direct measurements of nursery quality. Growth and condition indices (length d --1, weight d--1, Fulton's K and relative weight) were calculated from otolith microstructure to indirectly evaluate nursery quality. Boston Harbor, MA and Great Bay, NH were found to be the healthiest nurseries and the Niantic River, CT was found to be the least healthy nursery. In addition to these indirect indices, we conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of otolith microchemistry as a direct measurement of nursery habitat. …

Balancing Ecological And Economic Values In Northern Hardwood Stands: What Are The Trade-Offs?, Daniel Woock Kilham Jan 2013

Balancing Ecological And Economic Values In Northern Hardwood Stands: What Are The Trade-Offs?, Daniel Woock Kilham

Master's Theses and Capstones

New England has 32 million acres of forested land, 27.5 million acres are private and 13.5 million of those private forests are family owned. Two of the main landowner objectives of privately owned forests in New England are generating income and promoting biodiversity and nature. Objectives were to develop a rapid ecological assessment method to aid management of private forests and to determine any trade-offs between economic and ecological values. We measured economic and ecological values in our study site in New Hampshire, and simulated four harvest treatments to determine the effects of different silvicultural approaches. Ecological values were measured …

Response Of Tree Growth And Water Use Efficiency To Climate And Nitrogen Deposition In A Temperate Deciduous Forest In The Northeastern Us, Katie Jennings Jan 2013

Response Of Tree Growth And Water Use Efficiency To Climate And Nitrogen Deposition In A Temperate Deciduous Forest In The Northeastern Us, Katie Jennings

Master's Theses and Capstones

Nitrogen (N) deposition and climate change are altering tree growth and may have important consequences for water use in northeastern forests. Intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE), the trade-off between water loss and carbon fixed during photosynthesis, directly links forest carbon and water cycles. Dendrochronology and stable isotopes (delta13C and delta18O) were used to assess Quercus velutina growth and iWUE within a chronic N deposition experiment (20+ years of fertilization at low- and high-N rates). Fertilized trees exhibited sustained growth enhancement, with the greatest response observed for high-N trees. All fertilized trees improved their iWUE through increased photosynthetic rates, but was …

The Individual Tree And Forest Stand Level Impacts Of Winter Moth Defoliation In Eastern Massachusetts, Usa, Michael J. Simmons Jan 2013

The Individual Tree And Forest Stand Level Impacts Of Winter Moth Defoliation In Eastern Massachusetts, Usa, Michael J. Simmons

Master's Theses and Capstones

Winter moth is a non-native invasive defoliator in New England. This thesis related host tree radial growth of individual trees in eastern Massachusetts to winter moth defoliation intensity using tree core analysis. Further, tree core analysis was used to identify winter moth defoliation events in several forest stands in eastern Massachusetts and these events were used to relate winter moth to stand level tree mortality and understory woody plant density. Quercus radial growth from 2005-2010 was negatively related to winter moth defoliation. In addition, Quercus mortality in mixed -- Quercus and Quercus - P. strobus forests in eastern Massachusetts was …

Production Of Bio-Jet Fuel From Microalgae, Marian Elmoraghy Jan 2013

Production Of Bio-Jet Fuel From Microalgae, Marian Elmoraghy

Master's Theses and Capstones

The increase in petroleum-based aviation fuel consumption, the decrease in petroleum resources, the fluctuation of the crude oil price, the increase in greenhouse gas emission and the need for energy security are motivating the development of an alternate jet fuel. Bio-jet fuel has to be a drop in fuel, technically and economically feasible, environmentally friendly, greener than jet fuel, produced locally and low gallon per Btu. Bic jet fuel has been produced by blending petro-based jet fuel with microalgae biodiesel (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester, or simply FAME). Indoor microalgae growth, lipids extraction and transetrification to biodiesel are energy and fresh …

Toward Understanding The Economic And Ecological Outcomes Of Selection Silviculture On A Northern Hardwood Forest, Katherine Ann Sinacore Jan 2013

Toward Understanding The Economic And Ecological Outcomes Of Selection Silviculture On A Northern Hardwood Forest, Katherine Ann Sinacore

Master's Theses and Capstones

Single-tree selection (STS) and small-group selection (SGS) silviculture are widely used in the northeastern United States, but questions remain regarding the economic and ecological outcomes of these systems. To assess harvest treatment effects on northern hardwood forests, we examined an unmanaged stand (UNM) and STS and SGS managed stands within the Bartlett Experimental Forest of New Hampshire. For an economic perspective, grade and standing tree values were our metrics to evaluate changes in timber quality. After 60 years of management, the percentage of higher graded trees increased slightly for both the SGS and STS managed stands. However, current data suggests …

Patterns Of Intron Loss And Gain In Caenorhabditis, Gabrielle Giese Jan 2013

Patterns Of Intron Loss And Gain In Caenorhabditis, Gabrielle Giese

Master's Theses and Capstones

Introns, segments of genes that get spliced from the transcript before translation, are prevalent parts of many genomes and yet remain largely mysterious. Although their presence in the genome has been known for over thirty years, we still cannot answer the most fundamental questions about introns, such as where did they originate and, how are they gained and lost? In our most stringent dataset, we compared 137,453 intron positions in 6,257 pan-orthologs among four species of Caenorhabditis using a bioinformatics approach. While 82% of intron positions were conserved, we found a remarkable amount of intron variation. We also found evidence …

Ecology And Management Of Moose In Northern New England, Haley A. Andreozzi Jan 2013

Ecology And Management Of Moose In Northern New England, Haley A. Andreozzi

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study examined three facets of moose ecology in northern New England: impact of moose browsing on forest regeneration, physical characteristics of harvested bull moose, and winter habitat use. Forest regeneration was not considered a major problem in northern Vermont based on stocking levels of commercial tree species. Increasing dominance of softwood species coupled with suppressed growth of hardwoods suggests possible local shifts in composition. Bull moose in Maine had stable body weight and antler spread, and selective harvest of trophy bulls was not apparent over 30 years. Winter locations from aerial surveys indicated that moose preferentially used deciduous/mixed forest …

Wasted Women: Modern Oppression In T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land", James Warwood Jan 2013

Wasted Women: Modern Oppression In T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land", James Warwood

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

T.S. Eliot has frequently been criticized for his misogynistic treatment of women in his poetry. Few, however, have considered the role his portrayal of women plays in supporting his poetic themes. The narrative space of “The Waste Land” is dominated primarily by women, both contemporary and mythical, who illustrate the brutal relationship between men and women. This intensely personal relationship, however, is analogous to the relationship of the individual and society; like the individual, the women must make the decision to either speak out against their oppressors or keep silent and accept their circumstances. Either option places women at risk …
