Molecular Mechanisms Related To Endotoxemia In Primary Human Cardiomyocytes In Culture, Atijah J. Collins Jan 2013

Molecular Mechanisms Related To Endotoxemia In Primary Human Cardiomyocytes In Culture, Atijah J. Collins

PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States and has been for the past 80 years. Development of novel therapeutic agents to address the large number of CVD deaths requires an in depth understanding of the structural and functional properties of human cardiomyocytes. Over the last few years we have been developing an in vitro paradigm to assess molecular cardiodynamics in Primary Human Cardiomyocyte in culture (PHCC). We tested the hypothesis whether endotoxemia would exhibit a marked decrease in contractile proteins and cause apoptosis in PHCC. In the current series of experiments, we induced endotoxemia …

When Certainty Dissolves Into Probability: A Legal Vision Of Toxic Causation For The Post-Genomic Era, Steve C. Gold Jan 2013

When Certainty Dissolves Into Probability: A Legal Vision Of Toxic Causation For The Post-Genomic Era, Steve C. Gold

Washington and Lee Law Review

Proof of causation in toxic torts has presented persistent problems for the legal system, because the probabilities that science can know fit poorly with the demands for particularistic proof imposed by the law’s deterministic model of causation. Some scholars have hoped that genomic and molecular information will at last provide scientific certainty—definitive, individualized proof of toxic causation. This Article argues that the opposite is true. Scientific research will increasingly elucidate the ways in which environmental exposures and human genes interact to produce disease, but this deeper knowledge will extend rather than resolve the problem of causal indeterminacy in toxic torts. …

Mexsvms: Mid-Level Features For Scalable Action Recognition, Du Tran, Lorenzo Torresani Jan 2013

Mexsvms: Mid-Level Features For Scalable Action Recognition, Du Tran, Lorenzo Torresani

Computer Science Technical Reports

This paper introduces MEXSVMs, a mid-level representation enabling efficient recognition of actions in videos. The entries in our descriptor are the outputs of several movement classifiers evaluated over spatial-temporal volumes of the image sequence, using space-time interest points as low-level features. Each movement classifier is a simple exemplar-SVM, i.e., an SVM trained using a single positive video and a large number of negative sequences. Our representation offers two main advantages. First, since our mid-level features are learned from individual video exemplars, they require minimal amount of supervision. Second, we show that even simple linear classification models trained on our global …

Validation Of The Ottawa Ankle Rules At A Tertiary Teaching Hospital: A Cross-Sectional Study, Mark Karanja Tharao Jan 2013

Validation Of The Ottawa Ankle Rules At A Tertiary Teaching Hospital: A Cross-Sectional Study, Mark Karanja Tharao

Master of Medicine in General Surgery

Introduction: Ankle joint and foot injuries are among the commonest injuries seen at the Accident and Emergency Department of any hospital. Within the United States it is the second most common musculoskeletal injury seen by physicians. Assessment of these injuries is done clinically and when deemed necessary a radiograph is requested. Studies have shown that radiographs are ordered in over 95% of cases yet the prevalence of fractures is in the range of 15-20%. This means that more than 80% of patients are exposed to unnecessary radiation. The Ottawa ankle rules have been designed to reduce the need for performing …

Limited Effectiveness Of Hiv Prevention For Young People In Sub-Saharan Africa: Studying The Role Of Intervention And Evaluation, Kristien Michielsen, Marleen Temmerman, Van Rossem Jan 2013

Limited Effectiveness Of Hiv Prevention For Young People In Sub-Saharan Africa: Studying The Role Of Intervention And Evaluation, Kristien Michielsen, Marleen Temmerman, Van Rossem

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

On average, 2,500 young people (15-24 years) get -infected with HIV every day; 80% of which live in sub-Saharan Africa. Since no cure or vaccine is available, reducing sexual risk behaviour in this group is crucial in tackling the epidemic. The general objective of this doctoral study was to improve the effectiveness of HIV prevention interventions for young people in sub-Saharan Africa. First, we assessed the overall effectiveness of such interventions (systematic literature review, meta-analysis). Secondly, we evaluated a school-based peer-led HIV prevention interventions in Rwanda (longitudinal, non-randomized controlled trial), to get insight into how interventions are developed, implemented and …

Dietary Quality In A Sample Of Adults With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus In Ireland; A Cross-Sectional Case Control Study, A Murray, A Mc Morrow, E O Connor, C Kiely, Oscar Mac Ananey, D O'Shea, M Egana, F Lithander

Articles

BACKGROUND:

A number of dietary quality indices (DQIs) have been developed to assess the quality of dietary intake. Analysis of the intake of individual nutrients does not reflect the complexity of dietary behaviours and their association with health and disease. The aim of this study was to determine the dietary quality of individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) using a variety of validated DQIs.

METHODS:

In this cross-sectional analysis of 111 Caucasian adults, 65 cases with T2DM were recruited from the Diabetes Day Care Services of St. Columcille's and St. Vincent's Hospitals, Dublin, Ireland. Forty-six controls did not have …

How Culture Shapes Personality: A Preliminary Study, Hing Man Amy Wong Jan 2013

How Culture Shapes Personality: A Preliminary Study, Hing Man Amy Wong

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the relevance of a collectivistic personality attribute indigenous to the Chinese culture to non-Asian collectivistic cultures. To measure this attribute, the CPAI-2 Interpersonal Relatedness factor scales were administered to current college students who self-identified as Mexican American, Chinese American, or Caucasian. Only less acculturated Mexican American and Chinese American participants, as measured by the ARMSA-II or SL-ASIA, respectively, were included in the analysis. Although the Mexican American and Chinese American participants did not significantly differ from one another, these two groups did significantly differ from the Caucasian participants on two scales, Traditionalism-Modernity …

Open Access Dissertations

The pH-dependent interactions of pHLIPs® (pH (Low) Insertion Peptides) with lipid bilayer of membrane provides an opportunity to study and address fundamental questions of protein folding/insertion into membrane and unfolding/exit, as well as develop novel approach to target acidic diseased tissue such as cancer, ischemic myocardium, infection and others.

The main goal of the work presented here is to answer the following questions:

- What is the molecular mechanism of spontaneous insertion and folding of a peptide in a lipid bilayer of membrane;

- What is the molecular mechanism of unfolding and exit of a peptide from a lipid …

Hybrid Optical Acoustic Seafloor Mapping, Gabrielle Inglis Jan 2013

Hybrid Optical Acoustic Seafloor Mapping, Gabrielle Inglis

Open Access Dissertations

The oceanographic research and industrial communities have a persistent demand for detailed three dimensional sea floor maps which convey both shape and texture. Such data products are used for archeology, geology, ship inspection, biology, and habitat classification. There are a variety of sensing modalities and processing techniques available to produce these maps and each have their own potential benefits and related challenges. Multibeam sonar and stereo vision are such two sensors with complementary strengths making them ideally suited for data fusion. Data fusion approaches however, have seen only limited application to underwater mapping and there are no established methods for …

Seasonal Particle And Carbon Dynamics In The Eastern Bering Sea, Matthew S. Baumann Jan 2013

Seasonal Particle And Carbon Dynamics In The Eastern Bering Sea, Matthew S. Baumann

Open Access Dissertations

The ocean margins of high-latitude seas, such as the eastern Bering Sea, are recognized as important areas for the enhanced scavenging removal of particle reactive chemicals and for the potential to sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide via photosynthetic conversion to biogenic particles and subsequent downward particle transport to deeper waters. This region is expected to warm in the future, and with the warming will come a reduction in the extent and duration of seasonal sea-ice. This physical process exerts an important control on the timing, location, and magnitude of the spring primary production bloom. Within the context that 2008-2010 are characterized …

Sequence Effects On The Repair And Replication Of Arylamine-Dna Adducts, Vipin Jain Jan 2013

Sequence Effects On The Repair And Replication Of Arylamine-Dna Adducts, Vipin Jain

Open Access Dissertations

Cancer is a collection of diseases defined by uncontrolled cell growth and dissemination of abnormal cells. It is the second most deadly disease in the United States. Exposure to chemicals, both endogeneous and exogeneous is one of the major causes of cancer initiation. The role of chemicals in carcinogenesis was observed back in the eighteenth century when surgeon Pott observed a large number of scrotal cancer cases in chimney sweeps and associated it with to the soot exposure. However, research in the field of chemical carcinogenesis was renewed when Yamagawa and Ichikawa reported the development of malignant tumor on the …

The Effects Of N-Butonol On The Model And Reconstituted Membrane Of Clostridium Pasteurianum, Yogi Kurniawan Jan 2013

The Effects Of N-Butonol On The Model And Reconstituted Membrane Of Clostridium Pasteurianum, Yogi Kurniawan

Open Access Dissertations

During n-butanol fermentation, n-butanol partitions into microbial membranes result in destabilizing cellular lipid membranes by altering their lipid composition (generally the ratio of saturated to unsaturated lipids) whereas adapted microorganisms respond by altering the ratio of unsaturated to saturated lipids. The mechanism of how microbes achieve a high adaptation in response to n-butanol is barely known. This dissertation describes the role of unsaturated lipids and charged lipid composition in modulating n-butanol partition into membrane using model bacteria (i.e. lipid bilayer vesicles or liposomes and Langmuir monolayers) and those studies were compared with reconstituted membranes (Clostridium pasteurianum) that represented …

Novel Synthesis Of Sulfur Based Ligands Used In Modeling Biological Hydrogen Bonding Interactions, Tyler Jesse Jacinto Jan 2013

Novel Synthesis Of Sulfur Based Ligands Used In Modeling Biological Hydrogen Bonding Interactions, Tyler Jesse Jacinto

Master's Theses and Capstones

Heme-thiolate proteins are known to have hydrogen bond donors proximal to the axial thiolate ligand. The specific roles of these conserved H-bond donors have not yet been elucidated. However, various sources agree upon the positive influence that increased X-H···S interactions have on protein redox potentials. For example, synthetic modeling studies of the cytochromes P450 show similar positive shifts in potential in iron-porphyrin-thiolate model systems. The ligands used in modeling the H-bonding interactions in the P450 cytochromes included a series of 2,6-substituted thiophenols, -S(2,6-(CX3CONH)2C6H3), where X = H, F, CH3. The current synthetic route to these ligands is vague and employs …

When The Human Factor Is At The Core Of The Safety Barrier, Maria Chiara Leva, Catalina Bermudez Angel, Emmanuel Plot, Marco Gattuso

Articles

There are situation in the industry where the human actions are the main safety barriers to abnormal or accidental conditions. In order to maximize the reliability of good human and organizational barriers we need to ensure that the action-plans generated are based on a valid risk assessment of the situation to be addressed and informed by a relevant human factor analysis. This implies that the process needs to be participatory in nature, thus involving end user all the way through. In this paper we present a study in which a critical scenario of vessel overpressure was analyzed using a bowtie. …
