Applicability Of Cementochronology To Estimate Season-Of-Death In Humans: Insights From Modern Documented Collections, Olga Ibarra-Sanchez
Applicability Of Cementochronology To Estimate Season-Of-Death In Humans: Insights From Modern Documented Collections, Olga Ibarra-Sanchez
Theses and Dissertations
Dental cementum is characterized by lifelong deposition of alternating opaque annuli in fall/winter and translucent bands in spring/summer. This study aims to test the applicability of cementochronology to estimate season-of-death, by observing the properties of the last layer, with direct implications for forensic anthropology and bioarchaeology. The sample includes canine teeth from 146 adults (84 males, 62 females), age-at-death ranging from 20-97 years (mean=61.7 years, SD=18.6 years), from two contemporary skeletal collections. Of these individuals, 78 (53.4%) died in spring/summer and 68 (46.6%) died in fall/winter. Overall accuracy was low at 64.4% (94/146). Accuracy was higher for spring/summer deaths 100.0% …
Preventing, Delaying, And Managing Chronic Disease, Michele Dinman, Logan Fox
Preventing, Delaying, And Managing Chronic Disease, Michele Dinman, Logan Fox
Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging
We are living longer. Today, men and women who reach age 65 will live another 17 to 20 years, on average. As the human body ages, normal biological changes increase vulnerability to illness, and the risk of developing disease increases. At the same time, advances in public health, medicine, and health care have reduced deaths from acute conditions, like infection and accidents, and have increased our chances of living longer into the human life span. Thus, we now have greater chances of developing one or more chronic diseases. Most (75%) adults in the U.S. live with at least one chronic …
Adoptive Parents Use Of Social Media To Discuss Adoption Communicative Openness, Hannah Araba Baidoo
Adoptive Parents Use Of Social Media To Discuss Adoption Communicative Openness, Hannah Araba Baidoo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Adoption communicative openness (ACO) involves dialogue between adoptive parents and their adopted children about adoption-related issues. Through this communication, parents share information about birth families and address adoptees questions to support psychological well-being. Although ACO benefits adoptees, research rarely examines how adoptive parents themselves practice and experience openness. This study explores how adoptive parents discuss ACO with one another on the r/AdoptiveParents subreddit. Using qualitative discourse analysis, it examines how parents describe their challenges, and success surrounding communication openness. The analysis highlights parent’s concerns about when and how to disclose adoption information and the uncertainty that shapes their communication choices. …
Evidence Of Backwater Morphodynamics In Stratigraphy On Earth And Mars: Implications For Ancient Mars, Cory Mitchell Hughes
Evidence Of Backwater Morphodynamics In Stratigraphy On Earth And Mars: Implications For Ancient Mars, Cory Mitchell Hughes
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Geologic evidence indicates that liquid water once flowed in abundance across the martian surface. For this reason, in the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life, Mars represents a prime target for scientific inquiry. River systems encode climatic and environmental signals in their deposits on Earth and Mars, often in fan-shaped landforms (e.g., alluvial fans, river deltas, etc.). Distal fan-shaped deposits (i.e., river deltas), in particular, act as a relatively high-fidelity record of dynamic geologic processes. As such, NASA frequently sends rovers to locations on Mars’ surface with hypothesized river deltas (e.g., Perseverance and Jezero crater). Problematically, there are many different …
Towards Vision-Brain Understanding At Scales: From Classical To Quantum Machine Learning Approaches, Xuan-Bac Nguyen
Towards Vision-Brain Understanding At Scales: From Classical To Quantum Machine Learning Approaches, Xuan-Bac Nguyen
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, large-scale learning approaches such as unsupervised and self-supervised learning have revolutionized artificial intelligence. These methods enable machines to learn high-level representations without explicit human supervision, achieving remarkable success across vision, language, and multimodal tasks. However, such advances come at a cost—they rely on massive datasets, billions of parameters, and extensive computational resources. Despite these achievements, artificial systems still fall short of the remarkable learning efficiency of the human brain, which can infer, adapt, and generalize from limited experiences. This gap motivates a deeper exploration of how biological intelligence acquires knowledge and how these principles can inspire the …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines patterns of work-related indicators of physical stress in a skeletal sample from the non-elite adult population of the South Tombs Cemetery (STC) of Amarna, Egypt. Assessing work-related pathology using an integrative model of physical stress, this study considers the interactions of demographic parameters of age, sex, and injury recurrence, along with archaeological and documentary data to provide a biocultural contextual approach to physical stress in this population. The STC sample is compared to other samples from Egyptian and Nubian sites as well as historical samples believed to be under high physical demands and stressful conditions. The STC …
Exploring Denitrification In Wetland Nitrogen Cycling And Biostimulant-Based Agricultural Strategies To Improve Ecosystem Health, Alexander Bechtel
Exploring Denitrification In Wetland Nitrogen Cycling And Biostimulant-Based Agricultural Strategies To Improve Ecosystem Health, Alexander Bechtel
Theses
The overuse of fertilizers has doubled the amount of reactive nitrogen in the environment. Agricultural runoff then carries these pollutants into the waterways eventually causing severe ecological damage such as the Gulf of Mexico dead zone. Nitrogen plays an important role in all life on this planet, here we describe two complementary projects that investigate ways to mitigate nitrogen pollution. The first project investigates denitrification rates in soil after the Len Small Levee breached in 2016 which reconnected the Dogtooth Bend Floodplain with the Mississippi briefly. The denitrification process that began in the hydrologically activated soils was hypothesized to be …

Surface Water And Groundwater Interactions Within The Riparian Wetlands Of The Mississippi River Dogtooth Bend Southern Illinois, Adeola Jacob Fagorola
Theses
Riparian wetlands serve as transition areas connecting terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, providing vital functions in maintaining water quality and habitat for diverse array of organisms. A comprehensive understanding of the interaction between surface water (SW) and groundwater (GW) in riparian wetlands is crucial for the management of these ecologically significant habitats. However, the interactions between SW and GW are often only partially constrained particularly with respect to their effects on water chemistry and nutrient cycling. In this study I utilized geochemical and hydrological approaches to examine the dynamics of surface water and groundwater interactions within the riparian wetlands of the Dogtooth …
Relationship Between Semi-Aquatic Mammal Occupancy And Particulate Carbon, Nitrogen, And Phosphorus Dynamics In Freshwater Ecosystems, Madison H. Stokoski
Relationship Between Semi-Aquatic Mammal Occupancy And Particulate Carbon, Nitrogen, And Phosphorus Dynamics In Freshwater Ecosystems, Madison H. Stokoski
Theses
Semi-aquatic mammals such as beavers (Castor canadensis) and muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) can influence carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) dynamics in freshwater systems. While the effect of beavers, in particular, are typically attributed to their dam and lodge building behaviors, these animals do not always build these structures. It’s possible that other, non-damming behaviors (e.g. foraging and burrowing) may influence the availability of nutrients as well. To assess this possibility, we surveyed 54 lentic and lotic waterbodies across Southern Illinois and investigated the possibility that beaver and muskrat occupancy improved our ability to explain variation in nutrient availability across …

BACKGROUND: Human adenovirus (HAdV) is a common cause of pediatric acute respiratory illness (ARI), contributing to 5-13% of cases worldwide. Clinical manifestations vary by HAdV species and type; therefore, delineating type-specific disease presentations and understanding severity of specific HAdV types' disease may help develop targeted interventions.
METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, prospective study within the New Vaccine Surveillance Network to characterize HAdV types. Children < 18 years old with ARI were enrolled in the emergency department or inpatient setting at 7 US children's hospitals from 1 December 2016 to 30 November 2019. Respiratory specimens were collected and tested for HAdV and other viruses. Subsequently, typing was conducted on HAdV specimens using single-plex real-time PCR assays targeting sequences in the hexon gene. Comparisons between HAdV types were performed to determine differences in characteristics and outcomes. Generalized linear mixed effects models were used to evaluate severity.
RESULTS: Among the 1843 HAdV-positive cases, 1402 specimens (76%) were typed. The most common types detected were HAdV-C1 (n = 439), HAdV-C2 (n = 393), and HAdV-B3 (n = 221). Children with HAdV-B7 (n = 78) …

Computational Study On Protein Docking With Vascular Disease Application, Lohitha Reddy Shanigaram
Master's Theses
This thesis investigates how computational methods can help us understand protein docking and vascular diseases by integrating machine learning. The main goal of this research is to develop a system that can predict whether variants in the SOX17 gene are associated to Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH), a significant vascular condition. To do this, a dataset of 1,063 SOX17 variants was created using publicly available sources such as ClinVar, gnomAD, LOVD, and Ensembl. The study included cleaning and structuring the dataset, encoding genomic data and training a Random Forest classifier to classify variants as positive, negative, or unknown for disease association. …

Ontogenetic Analysis Of Parasaurolophus Braincases (Ornithischia, Hadrosauridae) From The Kaiparowits Formation (Upper Cretaceous) Of Utah, Usa: Comparing Juvenile And Adult Morphology, Amanda "Billie" C. Guerrero
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This study documents the ontogenetic development of the braincase in Parasaurolophus, a lambeosaurine hadrosaurid dinosaur known for its distinctive cranial crest. Whereas the crest has been extensively examined for its roles in communication and display, the braincase remains less understood, despite its structural and functional relationship with the crest. This research compares the braincase morphology of a juvenile specimen (RAM 14000, "Baby Joe"), a subadult specimen (RAM 17000), and an adult P. tubicen (NMMNH P-25100), to investigate how developmental changes influenced sensory systems, neurocranial architecture, and biomechanical adaptations across ontogeny.
Detailed morphological analysis reveals progressive changes from juvenile to …

Bricks, Bushes, And Bones: Urbanization Influence On Western Fence Lizard (Sceloporus Occidentalis) Morphology And Performance, Daisy P. Xiong
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
With increasing urbanization due to rising human populations, organisms may be forced to adapt rapidly to changing environments. Urbanization is replacing natural surfaces with more impervious substrates which can result in morphological changes affecting organismal locomotion, then also impact fitness. This study compares urban and natural habitat impact on Western Fence Lizards (Sceloporus occidentalis) and their adaptations in such settings. We captured lizards from three locations in inland Southern California with both urbanized and natural habitats in order to compare the morphological differences between lizards, and then measured their performance to determine the possible impacts from their morphology. …

Using Luminescence Of Quartz Temper From Archaeological Pottery To Infer Wildfire Intensity In The Southwestern Us, Brooklyn D. Dib
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
The size and frequency of wildfires have increased recently, impacting ecosystems, communities, and human health. This research uses the heat-sensitive luminescence signals of quartz sand temper within archaeological pottery to record past wildfire conditions. Pottery sherds, which are fragments of archaeological pottery, from the forest floor in sites in New Mexico and Arizona were collected from different fire contexts (no fire exposure, historical fires, prescribed burns, and modern wildfires). These forests are primarily Ponderosa Pine with a grassy understory. The interior sand grains of each sherd sample were analyzed using optically stimulated luminescence, which dates when the mineral grains were …

Lagomorphs, Ungulates, And Predation: Exploring Interactions And Quantifying The Effect Of Lagomorph Herbivory In Rangelands, Shantell Marie Garrett
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Rangelands are expansive ecosystems that make up more than 30% of the total surface land area in the contiguous United States. In the west, they are typically categorized as shrublands, grasslands or deserts with low precipitation. The vegetation communities consist largely of grasses and forbs and are thus widely used for livestock grazing. Despite their barren appearance, rangelands are diverse ecosystems that are home to a wide breadth of species.
The Henry Mountains, located in south central Utah, is one example of this system type. With their inspiring red-rock mesas and towering plateaus, this public land, managed by the Bureau …
Data-Driven Streamflow Forecasting In The Upper Colorado River Basin Using Spatio-Temporal Graph Networks, Akhila Akkala
Data-Driven Streamflow Forecasting In The Upper Colorado River Basin Using Spatio-Temporal Graph Networks, Akhila Akkala
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Forecasting river flow is essential for managing water supplies, reducing flood risk, and supporting healthy ecosystems. In the Upper Colorado River Basin, much of the yearly water comes from melting snow. However, many traditional models struggle to capture how snowpack and river flow interact, especially across such a large and complex region.
This study uses a modern machine learning approach called a Spatio-Temporal Graph Neural Network (STGNN) to improve streamflow prediction. The model uses Snow Water Equivalent (SWE)—a measure of how much water is stored in the snowpack—along with river flow data. By treating each river gauge as part of …

Leukemia-associated RhoGEF (LARG) is a guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) known for its specificity toward Ras homolog family member A (RhoA). LARG plays a crucial regulatory role in various cellular processes such as migration, proliferation, invasion, and metastasis by facilitating the exchange of GDP to GTP on RhoA. Phosphorylation of LARG at S1288 by ribosomal S6 kinase 2 (RSK2) promotes RhoA activation. However, the precise mechanism remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate the essential role and mechanism by which S1288 phosphorylation facilitates LARG-mediated invasiveness in response to epidermal growth factor (EGF). Upon EGF stimulation, RSK2 phosphorylates LARG at S1288, thereby promoting …
Complementary Color Laser Illumination For Perceptual Contrast Enhancement In Structurally Colored Samples, Tomoshree Dash
Complementary Color Laser Illumination For Perceptual Contrast Enhancement In Structurally Colored Samples, Tomoshree Dash
All Theses
Structural color, a phenomenon arising from nanoscale interaction between light and materials, has the potential to unveil biological, chemical, physical, and mechanical characteristics of the sample. It enables direct visualization of the sample by human users with high spatiotemporal resolution. However, its impact is often constrained by challenges in the perceptual differentiation of subtle color variations. This thesis introduces complementary color laser illumination (C2LI) as an imaging technique that enhances color perception of the Human Visual System (HVS) by accessing the psychophysical non-linearities in chromatic color perception. C2LI offers a platform optimized for the HVS by …
Diabetes-Induced Mitral Valve Degeneration: Tissue-Engineered Solutions And Antioxidant Therapy, Samantha Hahn
Diabetes-Induced Mitral Valve Degeneration: Tissue-Engineered Solutions And Antioxidant Therapy, Samantha Hahn
All Theses
Mitral valve (MV) fibrosis is a progressive pathological condition characterized by leaflet thickening and stiffening, ultimately compromising valve function. This process is accelerated in diabetes, where chronic hyperglycemia elevates reactive oxygen species (ROS) and alters the mechanics of the extracellular matrix (ECM), collectively promoting the activation of valvular interstitial cells (VICs). Under healthy conditions, VICs maintain a quiescent, fibroblast-like phenotype responsible for sustaining ECM homeostasis. However, pathological biochemical cues or mechanical stress drive VICs toward a myofibroblast phenotype. While this transformation is essential for short-term repair, its persistence contributes to maladaptive MV remodeling and fibrosis. Diabetic stressors may be mitigated …
Mitral Annular Calcification In Diabetes: Valvular Interstitial Cells, Antioxidant Therapy, And Tissue Engineering Approaches, Raleigh J. Keenan
Mitral Annular Calcification In Diabetes: Valvular Interstitial Cells, Antioxidant Therapy, And Tissue Engineering Approaches, Raleigh J. Keenan
All Theses
Mitral annular calcification (MAC) is a chronic, progressive, and degenerative condition that impairs mitral valve function and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. The mitral annulus is a saddle-shaped, fibrous structure that is primarily composed of collagen and elastin. The annulus also contains interspersed lipids that are involved in cellular metabolism, as well as inflammatory and osteogenic signaling. These lipids increase the annulus’ susceptibility to calcification, under conditions that increase mechanical stress (hypertension) and promote atherosclerosis (diabetes mellitus). These conditions intensify calcification by promoting the activation of valvular interstitial cells (VICs), increasing fibrosis, and inducing osteogenic differentiation. Although it is …
Experimental And Numerical Study On The Influence Of Carbon Fiber Reinforcement On The In-Plane Compressive Properties Of 3d Printed Hexagonal Honeycomb Core Structures, Deon Wallace
All Theses
There is difficulty with numerically replicating the behavior of composite honeycomb core structures numerically due to the trouble of gathering material properties from a hollow structure. Also, complex part geometries and carbon fiber reinforcement strategies can lead to unwanted structural weaknesses and variance in material properties that may not be reflected in numerical analysis when the part is additively manufactured. In this study, edgewise compressive testing is used to characterize the mechanical behavior and performance characteristics of these structures. The experimental results indicate an increase in the Young’s moduli of the honeycomb core structures as carbon fiber concentration increases. However, …

Reproduction And Larval Development Of The Invasive Asian Longhorned Beetle In South Carolina, Lindsey A. Stone
All Theses
The Asian longhorned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis Motschulsky; ALB) is a major threat to forest health due to the damage done by larval feeding in host trees. In 2020, ALB was discovered in Charleston County, South Carolina, which presents a novel climate for this invasive pest in North America. I investigated the reproductive biology and larval development of ALB to support detection and management efforts. By exposing 19 host trees to mated pairs of adults, I was able to determine rates of oviposition success (55%), egg viability (55%), and early larval survival (56%). On average, females chewed nearly 1 egg …
Investigating The Impacts Of Azole Antifungals On Growth Of Cryptococcus Neoformans, Gnanambika Sindhe
Investigating The Impacts Of Azole Antifungals On Growth Of Cryptococcus Neoformans, Gnanambika Sindhe
All Theses
Cryptococcus neoformans, an opportunistic fungal pathogen is responsible for cryptococcosis, leading to approximately 181,000 deaths annually, predominantly in regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa. Fluconazole, a widely used fungistatic azole, is often administered due to its relative affordability and lower toxicity. However, resistance to fluconazole in C. neoformans can arise through aneuploidy, complicating treatment efforts. This study aims to deepen our understanding of resistance mechanisms to azole drugs by comparing fluconazole with other azoles, including both clinical and agricultural azole antifungals. Disk diffusion assays were performed to evaluate the ability of C. neoformans to develop resistance to these compounds, focusing …
Analysis Of Hysteresis In Poly(3-Hexylthiophene) Based Organic Thin Film Transistors With And Without Interfacial Layers And Effects Of Ion Irradiation On Poly(3-Hexylthiophene) Transistors, Riya George
All Theses
In this study we are investigating and comparing the hysteresis observed in I-V characteristics of Poly(3-hexylthiophene -2, 5-diyl) (P3HT) Organic thin film transistors (OTFT) with and without interfacial layers. We are also investigating how electrical characteristics of P3HT OTFTs is affected by irradiation with Ar8+ ions.
Hysteresis is an undesired phenomenon that affects transistor reliability and performance. In this study on OTFTs, P3HT was used as the organic semiconductor, with silicon dioxide (SiO₂) as the Gate dielectric. Two interfacial layers—graphene oxide (GO) and a copolymer, poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate–glycidyl methacrylate–lauryl methacrylate) (POGL)—were introduced between the semiconductor …

Plant Community Responses To Wildfire, Timber Thinning, And Bison Reintroduction On The Northern Great Plains, Ethan H. Van-Derpoel
All Theses
The Northern Great Plains (NGP) is one of the largest intact grasslands remaining in the world. These two studies examine a few of the ecological concerns on the NGP today. First, the woody encroachment of conifers into grasslands and the effects of wildfires. Second, the effects of bison (Bison bison) reintroduction on plant communities. In Chapter 1, this study aims to examine the effects of wildfire and mechanical timber thinning, using a two-by-two factorial design, on plant community responses and forage quality in the Bull Mountains area of central Montana, USA. We found that our treatments had varying …

Organizations, including non-profit and government agencies such as the National Park Service and nature centers, that provide informal education (also known as interpretation) seek ways to achieve their mission and enhance their organizational performance (Anderson et al., 2022; Weiler & Ham, 2010). For informal education organizations that provide interpretation to visitors, one measure of organizational performance is the achievement of an organization’s desired visitor outcomes. Theory suggests that positive organizational performance is associated with positive workplace management conditions and high employee motivation. Thus, this study explored the relationships between interpreters’ perceptions of workplace management conditions, motivation, and performance on interpretive …
The Development Of Tools For The Production Of Fusarium Oxysporum Race 4 Resistant Cotton Varieties, Thomas Rylands
The Development Of Tools For The Production Of Fusarium Oxysporum Race 4 Resistant Cotton Varieties, Thomas Rylands
All Theses
Fusarium oxysporum race 4 (FOV4) is a fungal pathogen that infects cotton (Gossypium spp.) plants, resulting in fusarium wilt (FW) disease that causes significant wilting, yield loss, and eventually death. Since cotton is such an important crop globally, with tens of millions of bales of fiber produced and sold worldwide each year, it is critical to develop effective strategies to combat this pathogen. This research aims to achieve that goal through two projects: (i) develop an efficient co-culture system to test fungal treatments in vitro, and (ii) develop a computer vision pipeline to more accurately assess plant resistance …
