Hypothetical Pattern Idealization And Explanatory Models, Yasha Rohwer, Collin Rice
Hypothetical Pattern Idealization And Explanatory Models, Yasha Rohwer, Collin Rice
Philosophy Faculty Research and Scholarship
Highly idealized models, such as the Hawk-Dove game, are pervasive in biological theorizing. We argue that the process and motivation that leads to the introduction of various idealizations into these models is not adequately captured by Michael Weisberg’s taxonomy of three kinds of idealization. Consequently, a fourth kind of idealization is required, which we call hypothetical pattern idealization. This kind of idealization is used to construct models that aim to be explanatory but do not aim to be explanations.

Political Violence, Collective Functioning And Health: A Review Of The Literature, Cindy A. Sousa
Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship
Political violence is implicated in a range of mental health outcomes, including PTSD, depression, and anxiety. The social and political contexts of people’s lives, however, offer considerable protection from the mental health effects of political violence. In spite of the importance of people’s social and political environments for health, there is limited scholarship on how political violence compromises necessary social and political systems and inhibits individuals from participating in social and political life. Drawing on literature from multiple disciplines, including public health, anthropology, and psychology, this narrative review uses a multi-level, social ecological framework to enhance current knowledge about the …

Acoustic Emission Signal Of Lactococcus Lactis Before And After Inhibition With Nan3 And Infection With Bacteriophage C2, Debasish Ghosh, John M. Stencel, Clair D. Hicks, Frederick Payne, Didem Ozevin
Animal and Food Sciences Faculty Publications
The detection of acoustic emission (AE) from Lactococcus lactis, ssp lactis is reported in which emission intensities are used to follow and define metabolic activity during growth in nutrient broths. Optical density (OD) data were also acquired during L. lactis growth at 32°C and provided insight into the timing of the AE signals relative to the lag, logarithmic, and stationary growth phases of the bacteria. The inclusion of a metabolic inhibitor, NaN3, into the nutrient broth eliminated bacteria metabolic activity according to the OD data, the absence of which was confirmed using AE data acquisition. The OD …

A Short Chain Nad(H)-Dependent Alcohol Dehydrogenase (Hpscadh) From Helicobacter Pylori: A Role In Growth Under Neutral And Acidic Conditions., A. Kumari, Henry Windle, Denise Cornally, Barry Ryan, Gary Henehan
Articles
Toxic aldehydes produced by alcohol dehydrogenases have been implicated in the pathogenesis of Helicobacter pylori-related damage to the gastric mucosa. Despite this, the enzymes that might be responsible for producing such aldehydes have not been fully described. It was, therefore, of considerable interest to characterize the alcohol oxidizing enzymes in this pathogen. Previous work in this laboratory characterized two such H. pylori enzymes that had broad specificity for a range of aromatic alcohol substrates. An enzyme with broad specificity for aliphatic alcohols is likely to be required in order that H. pylori can metabolize the wide range of substrates encountered …

Electric Field Standing Wave Effects In Ft-Ir Transflection Spectra Of Biological Tissue Sections: Simulated Models Of Experimental Variability, Tomasz P. Wrobel, Barbara Wajnchold, Hugh Byrne, Malgorzata Baranska
Articles
The so-called electric field standing wave effect (EFSW) has recently been demonstrated to significantly distort FT-IR spectra acquired in a transflection mode, both experimentally and in simulated models, bringing into question the appropriateness of the technique for sample characterization, particularly in the field of spectroscopy of biological materials. The predicted effects are most notable in the regime where the sample thickness is comparable to the source wavelength. In this work, the model is extended to sample thicknesses more representative of biological tissue sections and to include typical experimental factors which are demonstrated to reduce the predicted effects. These include integration …

Emotion Capture: Emotionally Expressive Characters For Games, Cathy Ennis, Ludovic Hoyet, Arjan Egges, Rachel Mcdonnell
Conference papers
It has been shown that humans are sensitive to the portrayal of emotions for virtual characters. However, previous work in this area has often examined this sensitivity using extreme examples of facial or body animation. Less is known about how attuned people are at recognizing emotions as they are expressed during conversational communication. In order to determine whether body or facial motion is a better indicator for emotional expression for game characters, we conduct a perceptual experiment using synchronized full-body and facial motion-capture data. We find that people can recognize emotions from either modality alone, but combining facial and body …

Joint And Double/Multiple Degrees In Ireland, Frank Mcmahon
Joint And Double/Multiple Degrees In Ireland, Frank Mcmahon
Reports
This report derives from a project that was undertaken to document the current position in regard to the provision of Joint and Double/Multiple degrees in Ireland. The back-drop to the project was the rapid growth in the provision of such degrees in Continental Europe and the arrangements being put in place to facilitate a further expansion of their number. Initially, it was the intention to explore the provision of joint and double degrees in Irish public sector institutions only but it became evident at an early stage that some private colleges were major providers of joint degrees and so data …
Estimation Of Fuel Cost Curve Parameters For Thermal Power Plants Using The Abc Algorithm, Yusuf Sönmez
Estimation Of Fuel Cost Curve Parameters For Thermal Power Plants Using The Abc Algorithm, Yusuf Sönmez
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The solution accuracy of economic dispatch problems is associated with the accuracy of the fuel cost curve parameters. Therefore, updating of these parameters is a very important issue to further improve the final accuracy of economic dispatch problems. Estimating the parameters of the fuel cost curve may be the best solution for this issue. This paper presents an application of the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm to estimate the fuel cost curve parameters of thermal power plants. In the estimation problem, 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-order fuel cost functions are used, and the estimation problem is formulated as an optimization one. …

Swarm Optimization Tuned Mamdani Fuzzy Controller For Diabetes Delayed Model, Mohammad Hassan Khooban, Davood Nazari Maryam Abadi, Alireza Alfi, Mehdi Siahi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Diabetes is a chronic disease in which there are high levels of sugar in the blood. Insulin is a hormone that regulates the blood glucose level in the body. Diabetes mellitus can be caused by too little insulin, a resistance to insulin, or both. Although research activities on controlling blood glucose have been attempted to lower the blood glucose level in the quickest possible time, there are some shortages in the amount of the insulin injection. In this paper, a complete model of the glucose--insulin regulation system, which is a nonlinear delay differential model, is used. The purpose of this …
Opf-Based Reactive Power Planning And Voltage Stability Limit Improvement Under Single Line Outage Contingency Condition Through Evolutionary Algorithms, Sakthivel Padaiyatchi, Mary Daniel
Opf-Based Reactive Power Planning And Voltage Stability Limit Improvement Under Single Line Outage Contingency Condition Through Evolutionary Algorithms, Sakthivel Padaiyatchi, Mary Daniel
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Reactive power planning is vital for maintaining the voltage stability of power systems and evolutionary algorithms are highly useful for achieving this task. This paper compares the effectiveness of the differential evolution (DE) and evolutionary programming (EP) algorithms in optimizing the reactive power planning of power systems under line outage contingency conditions. DE is efficient in exploration through the search space of the problem, while EP is simple and easy to implement. The low cost but fast response thyristor-controlled series capacitor (TCSC) flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) device is incorporated to control the power flows. The optimal settings of …

Forty years is the unit of work in focus here. You have or will have units of forty years of your own, a unit of work like this. I can best respond to your generosity with a look back at the course of this effort of mine and its internal and external connections over time, to illustrate and help us keep in mind the way we mutually influence each other in our thought and lives. Origins and influences can begin with a biology teacher in secondary school, J. C. Catt, for whom I wrote a long paper on a drop …

the ftc’s authority to use Section 5 of the FTC Act to reach anticompetitive conduct that would not be illegal under the Sherman or Clayton Acts has been much discussed in recent years, particularly in conjunction with the FTC’s enforcement action against Intel. As of this writing, a Section 5 action against Google seems imminent.
