Perception Of Final Year Undergraduate Medical Students Towards Family Medicine In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Eric Luggar Aghan

Master of Medicine in Family Medicine

Primary health care was identified as the ideal model of health care delivery during the Alma Atta conference in USSR in 1978. The World Health Organization urged member countries to adopt it as a model of health care service delivery to their people. Since then many countries have adopted a primary health care model including Tanzania. In countries such as Cuba and Costa Rica where primary health care has successfully been implemented, access to affordable and quality health care service to all has resulted in lowered morbidity, mortality, improved quality and longevity of life. The success story behind primary health …

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Background: Acanthamoeba can interact with a wide range of microorganisms such as viruses, algae, yeasts, protists and bacteria including Legionella pneumophila, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Vibrio cholerae, Helicobacter pylori, Listeria monocytogenes, Mycobacterium spp., and Escherichia coli. In this capacity, Acanthamoeba has been suggested as a vector in the transmission of bacterial pathogens to the susceptible hosts.
Methods: Here, we used a keratitis isolate of A. castellanii of the T4 genotype and studied its interactions with two bacterial genera which have not been tested before, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Aeromonas hydrophila, as well as E. coli. Assays were performed to determine bacterial association with …

The Analgesic And Anticonvulsant Effects Of Piperine In Mice, I A. Bukhari, M S. Alhumayyd, A L. Mahesar, A H. Gilani Jan 2013

The Analgesic And Anticonvulsant Effects Of Piperine In Mice, I A. Bukhari, M S. Alhumayyd, A L. Mahesar, A H. Gilani

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Piperine, is the major active principal of black pepper. In traditional medicine, black pepper has been used as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory agent and in the treatment of epilepsy. This study was conducted to evaluate the in vivo analgesic and anticonvulsant effects of piperine in mice. The analgesic and anticonvulsant effects of piperine were studied in mice using acetic acid-induced writhing, tail flick assay, pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)- and picrotoxin (PIC)-induced seizures models. The intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of piperine (30, 50 and 70 mg/kg) significantly inhibited (P<0.01) the acetic acid-induced writhing in mice, similar to the effect of indomethacin (20 mg/kg i.p.). In the tail flick assay, piperine (30 and 50 mg/kg, i.p.) and morphine (5 mg/kg, i.p.) caused a significant increase (P<0.01) in the reaction time of mice. Pre-treatment of animals with naloxone (5 mg/kg i.p.), reversed the analgesic effects of both piperine and morphine in the tail flick assay. Piperine (30, 50 and 70 mg/kg, i.p.) and standard drugs, valproic acid (200 mg/kg, i.p.), carbamazepine (30 mg/kg, i.p.) and diazepam (1 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly (P<0.01) delayed the onset of PTZ-and PIC-induced seizures in mice. These findings indicate that piperine exhibits analgesic and anticonvulsant effects possibly mediated via opioid and GABA-ergic pathways respectively. Moreover, piperine being the main constituent of black pepper, may be contributing factor in the medicinal uses of black pepper in pain and epilepsy

Peer Influences On Adolescent Risk Behavior, Dustin Albert, Jason Chein, Laurence Steinberg Jan 2013

Peer Influences On Adolescent Risk Behavior, Dustin Albert, Jason Chein, Laurence Steinberg

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Research efforts to account for elevated risk behavior among adolescents have arrived at an exciting new stage. Moving beyond laboratory studies of age differences in risk perception and reasoning, new approaches have shifted their focus to the influence of social and emotional factors on adolescent decision making. We review recent research suggesting that adolescent risk-taking propensity derives in part from a maturational gap between early adolescent remodeling of the brain’s socioemotional reward system and a gradual, prolonged strengthening of the cognitive-control system. Research has suggested that in adolescence, a time when individuals spend an increasing amount of time with their …

HIV and AIDS

National HIV strategic plans, HIV-related services, and HIV outreach efforts have tended to overlook persons with disabilities, and persons with disabilities are not reached by general HIV prevention, care, support, and treatment campaigns and services. To increase our understanding of how to make HIV programming more inclusive for persons with disabilities, HIVCore and partners conducted a three-country situation analysis (Uganda, Zambia, and Ghana). The study explored existing HIV services for persons with disabilities and determined the factors affecting their access to and use of HIV/sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. Key findings: Persons with disabilities experience greater sexual vulnerability to …

The Crayfishes Of West Virginia’S Southwestern Coalfields Region With An Emphasis On The Life History Of Cambarus Theepiensis, David Allen Foltz Ii

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Crayfish are the third most endangered faunal group in the world behind freshwater snails and unionid mussels. A better understanding of each species’ life history is vital in order to aid in crayfish conservation; however, little to no life history information is available for most crayfish. Recently, an undescribed species of crayfish, Cambarus theepiensis, was discovered in the Cumberland Mountains of West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky. In conjunction with the species’ scientific description, life history data was collected from May 2012 through April 2013 from two sites located within the Twelvepole watershed of southwestern West Virginia. Animals were collected monthly …

Online Learning In A Chemical Perceptron, Peter Banda, Christof Teuscher, Matthew R. Lakin Jan 2013

Online Learning In A Chemical Perceptron, Peter Banda, Christof Teuscher, Matthew R. Lakin

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Autonomous learning implemented purely by means of a synthetic chemical system has not been previously realized. Learning promotes reusability and minimizes the system design to simple input-output specification. In this article we introduce a chemical perceptron, the first full-featured implementation of a perceptron in an artificial (simulated) chemistry. A perceptron is the simplest system capable of learning, inspired by the functioning of a biological neuron. Our artificial chemistry is deterministic and discrete-time, and follows Michaelis-Menten kinetics. We present two models, the weight-loop perceptron and the weight-race perceptron, which represent two possible strategies for a chemical implementation of linear integration and …

Post-Fire Recovery Of Juglans Californica In Sycamore Canyon: Water Potential And Site Characterization, Ariel Lan, Caitlin Thompson, Victoria Lekson Jan 2013

Post-Fire Recovery Of Juglans Californica In Sycamore Canyon: Water Potential And Site Characterization, Ariel Lan, Caitlin Thompson, Victoria Lekson

Featured Research

Our study focused on post-fire recovery in the California Black Walnut, Juglans californica. Our study was conducted Sycamore Canyon, an area of the Santa Monica Mountain Range recently damaged by the April 2013 fires. Part of our study focused on water potential and water stress among J. californica; we examined differences in the water potentials of mature, unburned trees and resprouts which have grown since the fires in April. We found that mature trees have a significantly higher water potential than sprouts, either epicormic or basal, which indicates that they are better equipped to handle water stress. We also found …

Post-Fire Recovery Of Juglans Californica In Sycamore Canyon: Vessel Length, Shading, Water Use Efficiency And Water Status, Victoria Lekson, Anushree Mahajan

Featured Research

In April 2013, Sycamore Canyon experienced a major wildfire. This study investigates post-fire recovery of two types of resprouts, basal and epicormic, and compares multiple parameters to mature unburned Juglans californica. In this study, we investigate the influence of time of day on the post-fire water potential of mature unburned plants versus burned Juglans californica epicormic and basal resprouts. One way ANOVA test reveals p

The Effect Of Freezing Conditions On Xylem Diameter Of Malosma Laurina And Umbellularia Californica In The Santa Monica Mountains, Nicole A.P.M.K.O.M. Nakamatsu, Theadora V. Ordog, Kaitlyn E. Sauer Jan 2013

The Effect Of Freezing Conditions On Xylem Diameter Of Malosma Laurina And Umbellularia Californica In The Santa Monica Mountains, Nicole A.P.M.K.O.M. Nakamatsu, Theadora V. Ordog, Kaitlyn E. Sauer

Featured Research

Temperature variations in the Santa Monica Mountains are drastic at times, which may be affecting the local plants. To determine the repercussions of these variations in temperature, we measured the xylem diameters of freezing and non-freezing Malosma laurina and Umbellularia californica. U. californica was chosen because it has a large xylem diameter, yet is known to survive freezing conditions. We thought that this plant could provide the most significant results to prove or disprove our hypothesis. M. laurina was chosen because it is abundant in the Santa Monica Mountains and has different physical dimensions than U. californica. Smaller xylem diameters …

The Cloning And Expression Of Histone Genes From The Archaeal Organisms Pyrococcus Furiosus And Methanobrevibacter Smithii In The Polycistronic Vector Pst44., Doha Abdullah Alqurashi

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The Euryarcheota branch of the Archaea contains histone proteins that are highly homologous to eukaryotic histones. Virtually all species within this group have two histone proteins (designated H1A and H2B). These proteins contain a canonical histone fold motif that stabilizes homo- and perhaps hetero-dimeric interactions. Molecular modeling calculations previously carried out in our laboratory revealed that both homo and hetero-dimers of histones from two euryarchaeal organisms are equally plausible. We have also shown through molecular modeling that inter-species hetero-dimers are structurally identical to existing solution structures archaeal histones. An interesting question that needs to be addressed is whether homo- and …

White Female Criminals In Civil War Richmond, 1860-1865, Frances Sisson Jan 2013

White Female Criminals In Civil War Richmond, 1860-1865, Frances Sisson

Honors Theses

This study tells the story of white female criminals and addresses the problem of the white female criminality and the resulting reaction of the patriarchal society in Richmond, Virginia during the Civil War, specifically the years 1861-1864. During the Civil War, white female criminality became a daily occurrence because of the wartime conditions in Richmond, such as inflation and overpopulation. Because of the established patriarchal society and the lack of emphasis on the women's rights movement in the South, the female involvement in crime during the war was extremely shocking to the male driven society. The judicial system struggled with …

Starving The Dark Markets: International Injunctions As A Means To Curb Small Arms And Light Weapons Trafficking Note, Daniel M. Salton

Connecticut Law Review

International arms sales are a big business. This understatement fails to elucidate the extensive industrial and economic impact of the weapons trade between nations. One of the most influential portions of is the production and sale of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW). Yet despite SALW sales valued at billions of dollars per year, little international regulation exists to control these sales. While most SALW sales occur within the legitimate sphere of business, a large number of SALW are sold and resold through the “grey” and “black” markets: illegal methods of sale that do not conform to any international norms. …

The New York City Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Portion Cap Rule: Lawfully Regulating Public Enemy Number One In The Obesity Epidemic Note, Kara Marcello

Connecticut Law Review

Faced with an obesity epidemic, on September 13, 2012, the New York City Board of Health became the first local administrative body to amend its health code to restrict the size of sugar-sweetened beverages sold in the food service establishments subject to its jurisdiction. A legal challenge led by the American Beverage Association quickly followed. In March 2013, the New York County Supreme Court struck down the portion cap rule. The challengers succeeded by arguing that the Board’s promulgation of the portion cap rule violated the separation of powers doctrine under the state constitution by usurping the power endowed to …

Modernizing State Vital Statistics Statutes And Policies To Ensure Accurate Gender Markers On Birth Certificates: A Good Government Approach To Recognizing The Lives Of Transgender People, Lisa Mottet Jan 2013

Modernizing State Vital Statistics Statutes And Policies To Ensure Accurate Gender Markers On Birth Certificates: A Good Government Approach To Recognizing The Lives Of Transgender People, Lisa Mottet

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

Across the country, laws governing corrections to gender markers on birth certificates are relatively uniform, in large part because many states adopted the relevant provisions of the 1977 revision of the Model State Vital Statistics Act (MSVSA). The MSVSA, developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, guides states on the most efficient laws and procedures related to maintaining accurate birth, death, and other vital records at the state, local, and territorial level. At the time when the government promulgated the MSVSA provision related to gender corrections, it served as a forward-thinking model because it acknowledged that vital …

On The Role Of Shape Prototypes In Hierarchical Models Of Vision, Michael David Thomure, Melanie Mitchell, Garrett T. Kenyon Jan 2013

On The Role Of Shape Prototypes In Hierarchical Models Of Vision, Michael David Thomure, Melanie Mitchell, Garrett T. Kenyon

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

We investigate the role of learned shape-prototypes in an influential family of hierarchical neural-network models of vision. Central to these networks’ design is a dictionary of learned shapes, which are meant to respond to discriminative visual patterns in the input. While higher-level features based on such learned prototypes have been cited as key for viewpointinvariant object-recognition in these models [1], [2], we show that high performance on invariant object-recognition tasks can be obtained by using a simple set of unlearned, “shape-free” features. This behavior is robust to the size of the network. These results call into question the roles of …

The Role Of Macrophages In Exercise And Insulin Resistance In Human Skeletal Muscle, Jason S. Groshong Jan 2013

The Role Of Macrophages In Exercise And Insulin Resistance In Human Skeletal Muscle, Jason S. Groshong

Theses and Dissertations--Physiology

Muscle biopsies were taken at baseline, post eccentric exercise, post aerobic training, and after training followed by eccentric exercise from adults with different health status. In Cell Western analysis of pAkt/Akt ratio suggests that muscle cells isolated from baseline biopsies respond to insulin in a dose dependent manner that tracks with sensitivity to insulin of the host; however, this is uncoupled from glucose disposal in vitro. Nitrotyrosine (NY), a marker of free radical damage, was employed to assess the efficacy of the exercise paradigm. NY immunohistochemistry on muscle cross-sections revealed that eccentric exercise significantly increased damage in older ( …

Latexin’S Role In Regulating Hematopoietic Stem And Progenitor Cells, Yi Liu Jan 2013

Latexin’S Role In Regulating Hematopoietic Stem And Progenitor Cells, Yi Liu

Theses and Dissertations--Physiology

Previous studies in our lab identified a novel gene, latexin (Lxn), that regulates murine hematopoietic stem cells through balancing apoptosis, self-renewal and proliferation. In these dissertation studies, I performed a series of experiments to examine the function of Lxn using a Lxn conventional knockout mouse, and characterize Lxn’s role in the presence of hematopoietic stresses such as ionizing radiation, cytokines induced-mobilization, and hematopoietic malignancy.

The first series of experiments was designed to determine the role of Lxn in hematopoiesis under homeostatic conditions. I found that Lxn-/- mice exhibited hyperproliferative hematopoiesis, a repopulation advantage and elevated self-renewal capacity …

Conservation Easements: Design Flaws, Enforcement Challenges, And Reform, Roger Colinvaux Jan 2013

Conservation Easements: Design Flaws, Enforcement Challenges, And Reform, Roger Colinvaux

Scholarly Articles

The charitable deduction for conservation easements promises a conservation benefit, lasting forever. Millions of acres have been protected by deductible conservation easements. On average over $1.5 billion are claimed in easement contributions each year, not including corporate contributions. The deduction, however, has serious problems. As use of the incentive has grown, doubts about the public benefit conveyed by conservation easements and significant enforcement difficulties have led to increased scrutiny of land trusts and to a growing chorus of calls for reform of the tax benefit and state laws governing easements. This Essay argues that it is because the tax incentive …

College of Health and Human Services

African Americans have the highest prevalence of hypertension in the world which may emanate from their predisposition to heightened endothelial inflammation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a 6-month aerobic exercise training (AEXT) intervention on the inflammatory biomarkers interleukin-10 (IL-10), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and endothelial microparticle (EMP) CD62E+ and endothelial function assessed by flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in African Americans. A secondary purpose was to evaluate whether changes in IL-10, IL-6, or CD62E+ EMPs predicted the change in FMD following the 6-month AEXT intervention. A pre-post design was employed with baseline evaluation including office blood pressure, FMD, …
