Assay Development For Determining The Anthelmintic Effect Of Plant Extracts On The Hookworm Ancylostoma Ceylanicum, Sarah Mcnutt Jan 2013

Assay Development For Determining The Anthelmintic Effect Of Plant Extracts On The Hookworm Ancylostoma Ceylanicum, Sarah Mcnutt

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Hookworm infections are one of the most common parasite infections in the world, infecting over 600 million people worldwide, mainly in impoverished areas. The current major approach to treating hookworm is periodic deworming with benzimidazoles. However, the frequent mass drug treatment has lead to a serious problem of drug resistance. Thus, efforts are moving towards developing new drugs and vaccines. We worked towards developing an assay to test the anthelmintic effect of plant extracts. The assays we developed tested the ability of samples to debilitate helminth worms to the point where they can no longer attach to the lining of …

Protein-Protein Interactions In The Neocortex: Emx2 And Its Binding Partners, Cierra Miller Jan 2013

Protein-Protein Interactions In The Neocortex: Emx2 And Its Binding Partners, Cierra Miller

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The mammalian neocortex is divided into discrete functional areas that are marked by distinct boundaries and whose positions are assigned through a process called neocortical arealization. One of the proteins involved in this process is Emx2, a transcription factor (protein that turns genes on and off) that is expressed, or made, in a gradient along the axis of the neocortex and determines the positions of these areal boundaries. In order to determine how Emx2 carries out this function of assigning areas, we have identified the proteins QKl-7 and Cnot61 as binding partners of Emx2.

Current research involves confirming the interactions …

Economic Impact Of Gulf Of Mexico Ecosystem Goods And Services And Integration Into Restoration Decision-Making, Andrew N. Shepard, John F. Valentine, Christopher F. D'Elia, David W. Yoskowitz, David E. Dismukes

Faculty Publications

Sustainability of natural resources requires balancing exploitation and conservation, enabled by management based on the best available scientific and economic information. Valuation of ecosystemgoods and services is an important tool for prioritizing restoration efforts, recognizing the economic importance of conserving natural capital, and raising public awareness about the contribution of healthy ecosystems to social welfare, now and for future generations. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (DHOS) in 2010 was a Gulf of Mexico ecological and economic disaster adding to decades-long degradation of the region's coastal and marine environment. In 2010, revenues from provisioning ecosystem goods and services generated by the …

Surviving The City: Resistance And Plant Life In Woolf’S Jacob’S Room And Barnes’ Nightwood, Ria Banerjee Jan 2013

Surviving The City: Resistance And Plant Life In Woolf’S Jacob’S Room And Barnes’ Nightwood, Ria Banerjee

Publications and Research

In Jacob’s Room (1922) and Nightwood (1936), Virginia Woolf and Djuna Barnes use plant life to express a profound ambivalence about the masculine-inflected ordering functions of art and morality. They show that these processes codify lived experience and distance it from the feminine and sexual. To counter this turn towards the urban inauthentic, both novels depict non-urban spaces to upend conventional notions of usefulness. They fixate on evanescent flowers, wild forests, and untillable fields as sites of resistance whose fragility and remoteness are strengths. In Jacob’s Room, I argue that the eponymous protagonist is destroyed by his conventional education …

Music And Emotion In Victim-Impact Evidence, Emily C. Green Jan 2013

Music And Emotion In Victim-Impact Evidence, Emily C. Green

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Aristotle famously said that the "law is reason free from passion," and nothing arouses passion better than music. Thus, when victim-impact evidence evolved from simple oral statements to include photographs, video footage, and musical clips, scholars and judges alike expressed concern that music might be too emotional and may make it difficult for the jury to make a rational decision based on logic rather than feeling. Recent scholarship in the field of law and emotion, however, notes that emotions are inevitable in law and further suggests that these emotions can be used constructively in the legal system. Thus, musically induced …

Want To Enroll In A Mooc? No Thanks, My Professors Have Their Own Videos, Enda Mcgovern, Arne Baruca

Marketing Faculty Publications (Archived)

Purpose: The paper explores how professors, in adopting short digital video lectures as a complementary teaching platform outside the classroom, could better enhance the learning experience for digital natives, i.e. millennial students, in challenging the growth of massive open online courses (MOOC). Specifically, the use of personalized, class-specific, video content made available on YouTube, in which the professor-of-record appears, is examined as a complementary learning platform for students required to read textbook material in preparation for class discussions.

Method / Design and Sample: Students were required to view class-specific digital videos on YouTube and thereafter complete a questionnaire to examine …

Using Your Melon: The Effects Of Object Recognition On The Echolocation Of An Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops Truncatus), Katherine Newton

Theses & ETDs

Dolphins use echolocation to discriminate amongst stimuli within their environment. Echolocation provides a unique way to learn about object recognition strategies because it is active (i.e., the dolphin produces clicks to gain information about objects). A few studies show that dolphins adapt their echolocation across contexts, but the characteristics that motivate these adaptations are not clear. The present study examines how an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin's (Tursiops truncatus) echoic investigation of stimuli changes across an object recognition task as initially novel objects become familiar and as performance accuracy increases. Acoustical and video recordings were obtained during a three-alternative matching-to-sample task in …

Neuroimaging Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: A Voxel-Based Analysis Of Smri And Dti Data, Graham Robart Jan 2013

Neuroimaging Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: A Voxel-Based Analysis Of Smri And Dti Data, Graham Robart

Theses & ETDs

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a silent but costly epidemic, affecting millions of people worldwide every year. The inability for traditional medical imaging technologies to detect some types of damage that occur in mTBI has prevented the injury from receiving appropriate attention in research and clinical settings for decades. A continually growing body of research establishes diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) as an imaging modality sensitive to the subtle sequalae of diffuse axonal injury (DAI), common in mTBI. With the development of better imaging and analysis techniques for DTI, and the establishment of certain imaging biomarkers for identifying mTBI, a …

Mexican Health Paradox, Merit George Jan 2013

Mexican Health Paradox, Merit George

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

Despite the broad array of research that exists on the Hispanic health paradox, no single explanation has been marked as the dominant reason for the disparities in life expectancy that exist between Mexican Americans and other Hispanic and non-Hispanic ethnic groups. This indicates that researchers must adopt a more open perspective that examines the influence of multidimensional factors that integrate culture, religious tradition, and lifestyle. The purpose of the current study is to 1) readily define the paradox and provide a thorough review of existing literature on the topic; 2) suggest a transition from exploring statistical explanations of the paradox …

Appreciative Inquiry Summits And Organizational Knowledge Creation: A Social Systems Perspective, Emi Makino Jan 2013

Appreciative Inquiry Summits And Organizational Knowledge Creation: A Social Systems Perspective, Emi Makino

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this exploratory study is to develop alternative models for analyzing the systems dynamics of a large group conference format called appreciative inquiry (AI) summits. I apply Luhmann’s social systems theory to the strategizing activities of AI summits to examine how this particular format is capable of generating organizational knowledge. An AI summit is a strategic planning conference in which hundreds of internal and external stakeholders collectively design the future of the organization through structured activities. It applies the principles of AI, a consulting method used in organizational development that attends to the positive aspects of an organization …

Regulation Of Hemolysin Gene Expression And The Effects Of Metabolism Mutations On The Virulence Of Vibrio Anguillarum, Xiangyu Mou Jan 2013

Regulation Of Hemolysin Gene Expression And The Effects Of Metabolism Mutations On The Virulence Of Vibrio Anguillarum, Xiangyu Mou

Open Access Dissertations

Vibrio anguillarum is the causative agent of vibriosis, a fatal hemorrhagic septicemic disease. V. anguillarum infects more than 50 fresh and salt-water fish species including various species of economic importance to the larviculture and aquaculture industry. In vibriosis, V. anguillarum invades its host fish through the intestine and skin. Infected fish usually die with systemic infection of V. anguillarum. Bacterial hemolysins are exotoxins that cause lysis of erythrocytes in the host and thus the release of the intracellular heme, and are therefore identified as important virulence factors. Moreover, hemolysins are known to also cause lysis in other cell types, …

Exploring The Future Of Friesenhahn Cave, Dylana Watford, Katherine Banick, Graham Bates

KIP Articles

Friesenhahn Cave in San Antonio, Texas, offers a wealth of paleontological artifacts. The cave is owned by Concordia University and is primarily managed by Dr. Laurence Meissner, professor of biology at Concordia. Since its discovery in the early twentieth century, researchers have discovered numerous Pleistocene fossils; aside from the La Brea Tar Pits in California, Friesenhahn Cave is the most Pleistocene fossil-rich site in the United States. Recently, little research has been conducted in the cave, though it is believed that many fossils remain to be discovered. We propose the establishment of the Friesenhahn Cave Foundation, a non-profit organization whose …

Physical Structure Of The Epikarst, William K. Jones Jan 2013

Physical Structure Of The Epikarst, William K. Jones

KIP Articles

Epikarst is a weathered zone of enhanced porosity on or near the surface or at the soil/bedrock contact of many karst landscapes. The epikarst is essentially the upper boundary of a karst system but is also a reaction chamber where many organics accumulate and react with the percolating water. The epikarst stores and directs percolating recharge waters to the underlying karst aquifers. Epikarst permeability decreases with depth below the surface. The epikarst may function as a perched aquifer with a saturated zone that transmits water laterally for some distance until it drains slowly through fractures or rapidly at shaft drains …

Studies Of Mercury In Water, Sediment, And Fish In Mississippi: Concentrations, Speciation, Cycling, And Isotopic Composition, Garry Brown Jan 2013

Studies Of Mercury In Water, Sediment, And Fish In Mississippi: Concentrations, Speciation, Cycling, And Isotopic Composition, Garry Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this project is to better understand the biogeochemical cycle of mercury (Hg) in Mississippi to aid those managing the resources and developing related policy. To that end, Hg levels were determined in a total of 202 fish from Enid, Sardis and Grenada Lakes; Enid and Grenada have fish consumption advisories due to Hg. In addition, total-Hg and methylmercury (MeHg) levels were determined in the inflow and outflows from Enid and Sardis Lakes and in bottom sediment and suspended solids in Enid Lake. Potential sources of Hg to Enid Lake were investigated, including precipitation and runoff from urban, …

Functional Constraints And The Evolution Of Ttx-Resistance In Ttx-Bearing Salamanders, Angela Haslem Jan 2013

Functional Constraints And The Evolution Of Ttx-Resistance In Ttx-Bearing Salamanders, Angela Haslem

Undergraduate Research and Creative Opportunities (URCO) Grant Program

Tetrodotoxin (TTX) binds to voltage-gated sodium (NaV) channels, blocking the initiation of action potentials and the activity of nerve and muscle fibers. Some salamanders use TTX as an anti-predator defense. These salamanders are resistant to TTX because they express TTX-resistant NaV channels in their nerves and muscles. In vertebrates, NaV channels are encoded by a multi-gene family. Different members of this gene family possess different functional properties and are expressed in different neuromuscular tissues. Cardiac muscle and the cardiac muscle channel (NaV 1.5) of amphibians and many reptiles is TTX-sensitive while NaV 1.5 in mammals (and some reptiles) is TTX-resistant. …
