Intense selective pressures applied over short evolutionary time have resulted in homogeneity within, but substantial variation among, horse breeds. Utilizing this population structure, 744 individuals from 33 breeds, and a 54,000 SNP genotyping array, breed-specific targets of selection were identified using an FST-based statistic calculated in 500-kb windows across the genome. A 5.5-Mb region of ECA18, in which the myostatin (MSTN) gene was centered, contained the highest signature of selection in both the Paint and Quarter Horse. Gene sequencing and histological analysis of gluteal muscle biopsies showed a promoter variant and intronic SNP of MSTN were …

The Breeding and Genetics Symposium titled “Systems Biology in Animal Breeding: Identifying relationships among markers, genes, and phenotypes” was held at the Joint Annual Meeting of the American Society of Animal Science and the American Dairy Science Association in Phoenix, Arizona, July 15-19, 2012. The primary goal of the symposium was to demonstrate the use of high-density SNP genotypes to determine the complex regulatory relationships among genotypes and phenotypes but also to present methods for studying complex relationships among phenotypes. Case studies from mammalian and avian species were included to emphasize the broad applicability of these methods.

Index Selection In Terminal Sires Improves Lamb Performance At Finishing, G. C. Márquez, W. Haresign, M. H. Davies, Rainer Roehe, L. Bünger, G. Simm, Ronald M. Lewis Jan 2013

Index Selection In Terminal Sires Improves Lamb Performance At Finishing, G. C. Márquez, W. Haresign, M. H. Davies, Rainer Roehe, L. Bünger, G. Simm, Ronald M. Lewis

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Lamb meat is often perceived by consumers as fatty, and consumption has decreased in recent decades. A lean growth index was developed in the UK for terminal sire breeds to increase carcass lean content and constrain fat content at a constant age end point. The purposes of this study were 1) to evaluate the effects of index selection of terminal sires on their crossbred offspring at finishing and 2) to evaluate its effectiveness within terminal sire breeds. Approximately 70% of lambs marketed in the UK have been sired by rams of breeds typically thought of as specialized terminal sires. The …

Long Gap Peripheral Nerve Reconstruction Using Decellularized Nerve Grafts, Srikanth Vasudevan Jan 2013

Long Gap Peripheral Nerve Reconstruction Using Decellularized Nerve Grafts, Srikanth Vasudevan

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Peripheral nerve injuries that arise as a result of trauma, tumor excision or birth can adversely affect the quality of patient life, leading to lifelong disabilities in some cases. Autologous nerve grafts are the clinical "gold standard" for long gap nerve repair, and allogeneic nerve grafts are considered the next best treatment option. Despite having numerous benefits, autologous nerve grafts are associated with limited supply, longer operation time, risk of infection, painful neuroma formation and most importantly, loss of function at the donor site. Allogeneic nerve grafts require transient immunosuppression, which exposes the patients to risks of infection, toxicity and …

Diffuse Optical Tomography To Study The Ischemic Stroke In Rat Models, Zi-Jing Lin

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Stroke, including ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke, is the major leading cause of death in the United States. More than 80 percent of stroke patients are diagnosed with ischemic stroke, which usually results from blockage of artery in the brain by thrombosis or arterial embolism. Animal Models, which permit powerful genetic and molecular approaches, provide an essential tool to study and understand the basic processes and potential therapeutic interventions for this disease. Significant efforts have been made to closely mimic the changes that occur in humans during and after stroke using animal models. Recent development on near infrared (NIR) diffuse …

Kinetics Analyses Of Interactions Between Oncogenic And Tumor Suppressor Proteins By Quantitative High Resolution Microscopy Methods, Shu-Fen Tseng

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

DAB2IP is correlated to the risk of aggressive prostate cancer and loss of DAB2IP not only leads to epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), but also makes cells radioresistant. These observations support the notion that improved knowledge of DAB2IP involvement in cellular pathways could be of help to cancer therapy. The goal of this work was to enable the study of how DAB2IP and some of its known key molecular partners interact in the cell by a combination of molecular biology techniques and recently reported quantitative fluorescence microscopy methods. The first part of this work was dedicated on investigating the interaction of DAB2IP …

The Real Limits To Marine Life: A Further Critique Of The Respiration Index, B. A. Seibel, J. J. Childress Jan 2013

The Real Limits To Marine Life: A Further Critique Of The Respiration Index, B. A. Seibel, J. J. Childress

Marine Science Faculty Publications

The recently proposed "Respiration Index" (RI = log PO2/PCO2) suggests that aerobic metabolism is limited by the ratio of reactants (oxygen) to products (carbon dioxide) according to the thermodynamics of cellular respiration. Here, we demonstrate further that, because of the large standard free energy change for organic carbon oxidation (ΔG° = −686 kcal mol−1), carbon dioxide can never reach concentrations that would limit the thermodynamics of this reaction. A PCO2 to PO2 ratio of 10503 would be required to reach equilibrium (equilibrium constant, Keq = 10503), where ΔG = 0. Thus, …

River Discharge Influences On Particulate Organic Carbon Age Structure In The Mississippi/Atchafalaya River System, Brad E. Rosenheim, Kimberly M. Roe, Brian J. Roberts, Alexander S. Kolker, Mead A. Allison, Karen H. Johannesson

Marine Science Faculty Publications

[1] Applying ramped pyrolysis radiocarbon analysis to suspended river sediments, we generate radiocarbon (14C) age spectra for particulate organic carbon (POC) from the lower Mississippi-Atchafalaya River system (MARS) to better understand a major river system's role in carbon transport. Ramped pyrolysis 14C analysis generates age distributions of bulk carbon based on thermochemical stability of different organic components. Our results indicate higher proportions of older material in the POC during higher discharge. Ages increase throughout the high-discharge age spectra, indicating that no single component of the POC is responsible for the overall age increases observed. Instead, older material …

Linking Ramped Pyrolysis Isotope Data To Oil Content Through Pah Analysis, Matthew A. Pendergraft, Zeynep Dincer, José L. Sericano, Terry L. Wade, Joanna Kolasinski, Brad E. Rosenheim

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Ramped pyrolysis isotope (13C and 14C) analysis coupled with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) analysis demonstrates the utility of ramped pyrolysis in screening for oil content in sediments. Here, sediments from Barataria Bay, Louisiana, USA that were contaminated by oil from the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon spill display relationships between oil contamination, pyrolysis profiles, and isotopic composition. Sediment samples with low PAH concentrations are thermochemically stable until higher temperatures, while samples containing high concentrations of PAHs pyrolyze at low temperatures. High PAH samples are also depleted in radiocarbon (14C), especially in the fractions that pyrolyze at …

Effects Of Oil On The Rate And Trajectory Of Louisiana Marsh Shoreline Erosion, G Mcclenachan, R. Eugene Turner, A W. Tweel Jan 2013

Effects Of Oil On The Rate And Trajectory Of Louisiana Marsh Shoreline Erosion, G Mcclenachan, R. Eugene Turner, A W. Tweel

Faculty Publications

Oil can have long-term detrimental effects on marsh plant health, both above-and belowground. However, there are few data available that quantify the accelerated rate of erosion that oil may cause to marshes and the trajectory of change. Between November 2010 and August 2012, we collected data on shoreline erosion, soil strength, per cent cover of Spartina alterniflora, and marsh edge overhang at 30 closely spaced low oil and high oil sites in Bay Batiste, Louisiana. Surface oil samples were taken one meter into the marsh in February 2011. All high oiled sites in Bay Batiste were contaminated with Macondo 252 …

Retrospective Analysis Of Midsummer Hypoxic Area And Volume In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, 1985-2011, D R. Obenour, D Scavia, N N. Rabalais, R. Eugene Turner, D R. Obenour

Faculty Publications

Robust estimates of hypoxic extent (both area and volume) are important for assessing the impacts of low dissolved oxygen on aquatic ecosystems at large spatial scales. Such estimates are also important for calibrating models linking hypoxia to causal factors, such as nutrient loading and stratification, and for informing management decisions. In this study, we develop a rigorous geostatistical modeling framework to estimate the hypoxic extent in the northern Gulf of Mexico from data collected during midsummer, quasi-synoptic monitoring cruises (1985-2011). Instead of a traditional interpolation-based approach, we use a simulation-based approach that yields more robust extent estimates and quantified uncertainty. …

Nitrogen And Phosphorus Phytoplankton Growth Limitation In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, R. Eugene Turner, N N. Rabalais Jan 2013

Nitrogen And Phosphorus Phytoplankton Growth Limitation In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, R. Eugene Turner, N N. Rabalais

Faculty Publications

We conducted 158 bioassays to determine phytoplankton growth limitation in the northern Gulf of Mexico and made the following observations. Light limitation occurred where salinity was < 20; at higher salinities, phytoplankton biomass yield became mostly limited by N or by a co-limitation of N plus P (NP). The number of N-limited bioassays was 5 times greater than the P-limited bioassays. NP synergism occurred where salinity was > 20, and represented 59% of all samples that were not light-limited. The interaction of N and P co-limitation was frequently synergistically additive, i.e. the combined effects of N and P limitation together created a greater response than the sum of either separately. The dissolved inorganic nitrogen: phosphate ratio (DIN:Pi) and various concentrations of DIN and Pi did not offer reliable chemical boundaries describing likely areas of exclusive N or P limitation in these bioassays. …

Assay Development For Determining The Anthelmintic Effect Of Plant Extracts On The Hookworm Ancylostoma Ceylanicum, Sarah Mcnutt Jan 2013

Assay Development For Determining The Anthelmintic Effect Of Plant Extracts On The Hookworm Ancylostoma Ceylanicum, Sarah Mcnutt

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Hookworm infections are one of the most common parasite infections in the world, infecting over 600 million people worldwide, mainly in impoverished areas. The current major approach to treating hookworm is periodic deworming with benzimidazoles. However, the frequent mass drug treatment has lead to a serious problem of drug resistance. Thus, efforts are moving towards developing new drugs and vaccines. We worked towards developing an assay to test the anthelmintic effect of plant extracts. The assays we developed tested the ability of samples to debilitate helminth worms to the point where they can no longer attach to the lining of …

Protein-Protein Interactions In The Neocortex: Emx2 And Its Binding Partners, Cierra Miller Jan 2013

Protein-Protein Interactions In The Neocortex: Emx2 And Its Binding Partners, Cierra Miller

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The mammalian neocortex is divided into discrete functional areas that are marked by distinct boundaries and whose positions are assigned through a process called neocortical arealization. One of the proteins involved in this process is Emx2, a transcription factor (protein that turns genes on and off) that is expressed, or made, in a gradient along the axis of the neocortex and determines the positions of these areal boundaries. In order to determine how Emx2 carries out this function of assigning areas, we have identified the proteins QKl-7 and Cnot61 as binding partners of Emx2.

Current research involves confirming the interactions …

Economic Impact Of Gulf Of Mexico Ecosystem Goods And Services And Integration Into Restoration Decision-Making, Andrew N. Shepard, John F. Valentine, Christopher F. D'Elia, David W. Yoskowitz, David E. Dismukes

Faculty Publications

Sustainability of natural resources requires balancing exploitation and conservation, enabled by management based on the best available scientific and economic information. Valuation of ecosystemgoods and services is an important tool for prioritizing restoration efforts, recognizing the economic importance of conserving natural capital, and raising public awareness about the contribution of healthy ecosystems to social welfare, now and for future generations. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (DHOS) in 2010 was a Gulf of Mexico ecological and economic disaster adding to decades-long degradation of the region's coastal and marine environment. In 2010, revenues from provisioning ecosystem goods and services generated by the …

Surviving The City: Resistance And Plant Life In Woolf’S Jacob’S Room And Barnes’ Nightwood, Ria Banerjee Jan 2013

Surviving The City: Resistance And Plant Life In Woolf’S Jacob’S Room And Barnes’ Nightwood, Ria Banerjee

Publications and Research

In Jacob’s Room (1922) and Nightwood (1936), Virginia Woolf and Djuna Barnes use plant life to express a profound ambivalence about the masculine-inflected ordering functions of art and morality. They show that these processes codify lived experience and distance it from the feminine and sexual. To counter this turn towards the urban inauthentic, both novels depict non-urban spaces to upend conventional notions of usefulness. They fixate on evanescent flowers, wild forests, and untillable fields as sites of resistance whose fragility and remoteness are strengths. In Jacob’s Room, I argue that the eponymous protagonist is destroyed by his conventional education …

Music And Emotion In Victim-Impact Evidence, Emily C. Green Jan 2013

Music And Emotion In Victim-Impact Evidence, Emily C. Green

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Aristotle famously said that the "law is reason free from passion," and nothing arouses passion better than music. Thus, when victim-impact evidence evolved from simple oral statements to include photographs, video footage, and musical clips, scholars and judges alike expressed concern that music might be too emotional and may make it difficult for the jury to make a rational decision based on logic rather than feeling. Recent scholarship in the field of law and emotion, however, notes that emotions are inevitable in law and further suggests that these emotions can be used constructively in the legal system. Thus, musically induced …
