Dynamic stall is an unsteady aerodynamic phenomenon garnering much research interest because it occurs in a variety of applications. For example, dynamic stall is known to occur on helicopter rotor blades, wind turbines, high maneuvering military aircraft, and flapping wings. Dynamic stall occurs when an aerodynamic lifting device, such as an airfoil, wing, or turbomachine blade, undergoes a rapid pitching motion. It also occurs on lifting devices that are impulsively started at high angles of attack. Peripheral vascular disease is a pathological disease state whereby the peripheral vascular system becomes progressively limited in its ability to adequately perfuse extremities despite increases in metabolic demand. One of the primary risk factors for development of peripheral disease is the Metabolic Syndrome. It is the presentation of three simultaneous comorbidities, with obesity being the most common denominator in most metabolic syndrome patients, but also including a pro-inflammatory state, pro-oxidant state, pro-thrombotic state, increased blood pressure, atherogenic dyslipidemia, or insulin resistance. Human metrological features generally refers to geometric measurements extracted from humans, such as height, chest circumference or foot length. Human metrology provides an important soft biometric that can be used in challenging situations, such as person classification and recognition at a distance, where hard biometric traits such as fingerprints and iris information cannot easily be acquired. In this work, we first study the question of predictability and correlation in human metrology. We show that partial or available measurements can be used to predict other missing measurements. Amine Nucleophilic Addition to Nitro-alkene as a New Reaction Mode for the Synthesis of N-heterocycles: An efficient stereoselective synthesis of polycyclic lactams has been developed using Michael addition of conjugated amino-esters to nitro-alkenes. Using acyclic and cyclic aminoesters, this method provided a promising approach to the synthesis of bicyclic and tricyclic lactam core (5,5; 6,5; 5,5,5; 5,6,5; 6,5,5; 6,6,5 etc) in moderate to excellent yield (up to 95%) and excellent diastereoselectivities (up to 99:1 dr). Mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with various forms of lung injury and disease that also involve alterations in pulmonary endothelial permeability, but the relationship, if any, between the two is not well understood. This question was addressed by perfusing isolated intact rat lung with a buffered physiological saline solution in the absence or presence of the mitochondrial complex I inhibitor rotenone (20 μM). Compared to control, rotenone depressed whole lung tissue ATP from 5.66±0.46 (SEM) to 2.34±0.15 µmol·g−1 dry lung, with concomitant increases in the ADP:ATP and AMP:ATP ratios. Past studies have shown that measures of attentional control and semantic memory retrieval are sensitive markers of Alzheimer disease: AD). The present study examined the utility of combining measures of attentional control and semantic retrieval within a single task to discriminate healthy aging from early stage AD and show sensitivity to AD biomarkers in healthy control individuals. Penarik becak dayung dan becak bermesin, pengatur lalu lintas, pedagang asongan, dan pedagang kaki lima banyak terpapar dengan polusi timbal dari udara ambien yang merupakan ancaman terhadap para pekerja pinggir jalan. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui hubungan karakteristik responden dengan kadar timbal dalam darah. Sampel dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 109 orang terdiri dari 58 orang penarik becak dayung, 30 orang penarik becak bermesin dan 21 orang pedagang kaki lima yang ditarik secara consecutive sampling. Depression is common in Parkinson's disease and is associated with cognitive impairment. Dopaminergic medications are effective in treating the motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease; however, little is known regarding the effects of dopaminergic pharmacotherapy on cognitive function in depressed Parkinson patients. This study examines the neuropsychological effects of dopaminergic pharmacotherapy in Parkinsonian depression. We compared cognitive function in depressed and non-depressed Parkinson patients at two time-points: following overnight withdrawal and after the usual morning regimen of dopaminergic medications. Pengendalian tuberkulosis telah meningkatkan angka kesembuhan dan menyelamatkan banyak jiwa, tetapi kurang berhasil menurunkan insiden tuberkulosis. Oleh karena itu, pengendalian tuberkulosis menekankan pada kebijakan determinan sosial karena determinan sosial secara langsung dan melalui faktor risiko tuberkulosis berpengaruh terhadap tuberkulosis. Hasil telaah literatur menunjukkan bahwa stratifikasi determinan sosial menyebabkan clustering tuberkulosis, berupa pengelompokkan penderita tuberkulosis menurut lokasi geografis yang secara statistik signifikan. Pengetahuan tentang clustering sangat bermanfaat dalam pengendalian tuberkulosis, khususnya untuk menurunkan insiden tuberkulosis karena dapat memberikan informasi tentang lokasi populasi yang berisiko. Perkembangan perokok di kalangan anak-anak dan remaja semakin meningkat, baik secara kuantitas maupun kualitas. Data Global Youth Tobacco Survey terakhir di tahun 2009, menunjukkan 20,3% anak sekolah 13 - 15 tahun merokok. Perokok pemula usia 10 - 14 tahun naik 2 kali lipat dalam 10 tahun terakhir dari 9,5% pada tahun 2001 menjadi 17,5% pada tahun 2010. Angka perokok pada usia remaja yang tinggi meningkatkan risiko penyakit. Berdasarkan penelitian, para perokok yang terus merokok dalam jangka panjang memiliki risiko kematian tiga kali lebih tinggi daripada mereka yang bukan perokok. Masih banyak ditemukan resep obat antituberkulosis anak dengan kombinasi beberapa obat dalam racikan puyer yang tidak sesuai standar program pemberantasan tuberkulosis (TB) paru Kementerian Kesehatan Republik Indonesia. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui situasi dan permasalahan berhubungan praktik peresepan puyer sebagai obat anti tuberkulosis (OAT). Pada periode Mei hingga Desember tahun 2009, penelitian diawali dengan pengukuran persentase peracikan OAT dalam bentuk puyer, dilanjutkan dengan penelitian kualitatif eksploratif. Data dikumpulkan dari rumah sakit, puskesmas, apotek dan dinas kesehatan di Jakarta, Bandung, Medan, dan Makassar. Tikus liar dan domestikasi mempunyai potensi faktor risiko bagi kesehatan masyarakat. Mereka dapat membawa mikroorganisme yang dapat ditransmisi melalui kontak dengan urine maupun feses atau melalui ektoparasit yang ada di tubuh mereka. Pada penelitian ini, diamati prevalensi mikroorganisme zoonotik pada tikus yang tertangkap di Pasar Kota Kabupaten Banjarnegara. Bakteri Salmonella paratyphi B dan Salmonella paratyphi C menunjukkan prevalensi yang paling tinggi (masing-masing 20%). Spesies bakteri lain yang ditemukan antara lain Salmonella typhimurium, Citrotobacter, Citrotobacter frendii, Enterotobacter cloacae, Escherichia coli (E. coli) dan Proteus miriabilis. Sampai dengan tahun 2013 dilaporkan ada 13 kasus leptospirosis di Kabupaten Banyumas.Terjadinya peningkatan kasus selama dua tahun terakhir perlu mendapat perhatian dari berbagai pihak agar kasus leptospirosis bisa segera ditangani. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah memetakan kasus leptospirosis dan menganalisis faktor risiko lingkungan dan perilaku yang memengaruhi leptospirosis. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain studi observasional kasus kontrol. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan wawancara, observasi, dan pengukuran. Analisis data menggunakan analisis spasial, analisis univariat, dan bivariat. Kasus adalah penderita leptospirosis berjumlah 13 orang dan kontrol adalah tetangga kasus yang tidak menderita leptospirosis berjumlah 52 orang. Role Of The Cipa Scaffoldin Protein In Cellulose Solubilization, As Determined By Targeted Gene Deletion And Complementation In Clostridium Thermocellum, Daniel G. Olson, Richard J. Giannone, Robert L. Hettich, Lee R. Lynd

The CipA scaffoldin protein plays a key role in the Clostridium thermocellum cellulosome. Previous studies have revealed that mutants deficient in binding or solubilizing cellulose also exhibit reduced expression of CipA. To confirm that CipA is, in fact, necessary for rapid solubilization of crystalline cellulose, the gene was deleted from the chromosome using targeted gene deletion technologies. The CipA deletion mutant exhibited a 100-fold reduction in cellulose solubilization rate, although it was eventually able to solubilize 80% of the 5 g/liter cellulose initially present. The deletion mutant was complemented by a copy of cipA expressed from a replicating plasmid. In …

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui proporsi tingkat kecerdasan anak, riwayat pemberian ASI, karakteristik ibu dan anak, serta faktor dominan yang berhubungan dengan tingkat kecerdasan anak pada siswa SDSN Pekayon Jaya VI Kota Bekasi. Penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain potong lintang dengan metode systematic random sampling dengan jumlah sampel sebesar 166 responden (siswa/i yang berumur 7 - 9 tahun) beserta ibunya. CHAPK is the N-terminal cysteine, histidine-dependent amidohydrolase/peptidase domain (CHAP domain) of the Staphylococcus aureus bacteriophage K endolysin LysK. It is formed from the first 165 residues of LysK and functions by cleaving specific peptidoglycan peptide bonds, causing bacterial lysis. CHAPK can lyse S. aureus when applied exogenously, making it a good candidate for the treatment of multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections. Here, the crystallization of CHAPK and the collection of native and derivative data to high resolution, which allowed structure solution, are reported. Microbial cellulose conversion by Clostridium thermocellum 27405 occurs predominantly through the activity of substrate-adherent bacteria organized in thin, primarily single cell-layered biofilms. The importance of cellulosic surface exposure to microbial hydrolysis has received little attention despite its implied impact on conversion kinetics.

The cyclin/cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK)/retinoblastoma (RB)-axis is a critical modulator of cell cycle entry and is aberrant in many human cancers. New nodes of therapeutic intervention are needed that can delay or combat the onset of malignancies. The antitumor properties and mechanistic functions of PD-0332991 (PD; a potent and selective CDK4/6 inhibitor) were investigated using human prostate cancer (PCa) models and primary tumors. PD significantly impaired the capacity of PCa cells to proliferate by promoting a robust G1-arrest. STK17A is a relatively uncharacterized member of the death-associated protein family of serine/threonine kinases which have previously been associated with cell death and apoptosis. Our prior work established that STK17A is a novel p53 target gene that is induced by a variety of DNA damaging agents in a p53-dependent manner. In this study we have uncovered an additional, unanticipated role for STK17A as a candidate promoter of cell proliferation and survival in glioblastoma (GBM). Following Spinoza-Einstein’s interpretation of God or nature, the notion “God Logic” is proposed. This notion is to serve as an elicitation for a consistent set of necessary criteria for: 1) developing the logical foundation of quantum gravity as envisaged by Einstein, 2) revealing the ubiquitous effects of quantum entanglement as suggested by Roger Penrose, and 3) programming the universe as proposed by Seth Lloyd. An evolving set of eleven criteria is proposed for the notion. The possibility of inventing such a logical system is analyzed. We have designed and characterized a new inlet and aerodynamic lens for the Aerodyne aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) that transmits particles between 80 nm and more than 3 µm in vacuum aerodynamic diameter. The de-sign of the inlet and lens was optimized with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of particle trajectories. Ma-jor changes include a redesigned critical orifice holder and valve assembly, addition of a relaxation chamber behind the critical orifice, and a higher lens operating pressure. The transmission efficiency of the new inlet and lens was char-acterized experimentally with size-selected particles. Exper-imental measurements are in good agreement with the …

The "negrito" hypothesis posits that various indigenous groups throughout Island and Mainland Southeast Asia have a shared phenotype due to common descent from a putative ancestral population, representing a preagricultural substrate of humanity in the region. This has been examined and tested many times in the past, with no clear resolution. With many new resources to hand, the articles in this volume reexamine this hypothesis in a range of different ways. The existence of a short-statured Aboriginal population in the Far North Queensland (FNQ) rainforest zone of Australia’s northeast coast and Tasmania has long been an enigma in Australian anthropology. Based on their reduced stature and associated morphological traits such as tightly curled hair, Birdsell and Tindale proposed that these "Barrinean" peoples were closely related to "negrito" peoples of Southeast Asia and that their ancestors had been the original Pleistocene settlers of Sahul, eventually displaced by taller invaders. Subsequent craniometric and blood protein studies, however, have suggested an overall homogeneity of indigenous Australians, including Barrineans. To confirm this finding and determine …

The so-called negritos adapt not just to a tropical forest environment but also to an environment characterized by perturbations and fluctuations. As with other hunter-gatherers in the region and, indeed, throughout the world, they use both social and ecological methods to enhance their chances of survival in this changing environment: socially, they have developed networks of trading and marriage partners; ecologically, they maintain patches of key resources that are available for future harvesting.
