Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Vibrio parahaemolyticus, an important human pathogen, is associated with gastroenteritis and transmitted through partially cooked seafood. It has become a major concern in the production and trade of marine food products. The prevalence of potentially virulent and pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus in raw seafood is of public health significance. Here we describe the genome sequence of a V. parahaemolyticus isolate of crustacean origin which was cultured from prawns in 2008 in Selangor, Malaysia (isolate PCV08-7). The next generation sequencing and analysis revealed that the genome of isolate PCV08-7 has closest similarity to that of V. parahaemolyticus RIMD2210633. However, there are certain …

Identification Of O-Glycosylated Proteins That Are Aberrantly Excreted In The Urine Of Patients With Early Stage Ovarian Cancer, A.K. Wai Mu, B.K. Lim, Onn Haji Hashim, Adawiyah Suriza Shuib

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Cancer is known to induce or alter the O-glycosylation of selective proteins that may eventually be excreted in the patients’ urine. The present study was performed to identify O-glycosylated proteins that are aberrantly excreted in the urine of patients with early stage ovarian cancer (OCa). These urinary glycoproteins are potential biomarkers for early detection of OCa. In this study, urinary proteins of patients with early stage OCa and age-matched OCa negative women were subjected to two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and detection using a lectin that binds to the O-glycosylated proteins. Our analysis demonstrated significant enhanced expression of clusterin and leucine-rich alpha-2-glycoprotein, …

An Improved Lectin-Based Method For The Detection Of Mucin-Type O-Glycans In Biological Samples, C.S. Lee, A. Muthusamy, P.S. Abdul-Rahman, V.P. Bhavanandan, Onn Haji Hashim

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Mucins and mucin-type glycoproteins, collectively referred to as mucin-type O-glycans, are implicated in many important biological functions and pathological conditions, including malignancy. Presently, there is no reliable method to measure the total mucin-type O-glycans of a sample, which may contain one or more of these macromolecules of unknown structures. We report the development of an improved microassay that is based on the binding of lectins to the unique and constant GalNAc-Ser/Thr structural feature of mucin-type O-glycans. Since the sugar-amino acid linkage in the mucin-type O-glycans is invariably cryptic, we first chemically removed the heterogeneous peripheral and core saccharides of model …

Generalized Mittag-Leffler Function Method For Solving Lorenz System, A.A.M. Arafa, S.Z. Rida, H.M. Ali

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

In this paper, generalizations Mittag-Leffler function method is applied to solve approximate and analytical solutions of nonlinear fractional differential equation systems such as lorenz system of fractional oreder, and compared the results with the results of Homotopy perturbation method (HPM) and Variational iteration method (VIM) in the standard integer order form. The reason of using fractional order differential equations (FOD) is that fractional order differential equations are naturally related to systems with memory which exists in most systems. Also they are closely related to fractals which are abundant in systems. The results derived of the fractional system are of a …

Neutrophils Control The Magnitude And Spread Of The Immune Response In A Thromboxane A2-Mediated Process, Chiao-Wen Yang, Emil R. Unanue Jan 2013

Neutrophils Control The Magnitude And Spread Of The Immune Response In A Thromboxane A2-Mediated Process, Chiao-Wen Yang, Emil R. Unanue

Open Access Publications

Neutrophils are obligate cells entering lymph nodes shortly after immunization with protein antigens in adjuvants, starting during the first hour and continuing for several days in two distinct waves. Previously, we demonstrated the strong suppressive effects of neutrophils on CD4 T cell and B cell responses, using either neutrophil-depleting antibodies or genetically neutropenic mice. In this study, we find that neutrophils are the major cells controlling the spread of T cell responses to distal lymph nodes. Although in the presence of neutrophils, ∼75% of the response was restricted to the draining node, in their absence, most of the response was …

How Can Sexed Semen Be Used In Commercial Beef Herds?, John B. Hall, J. Benton Glaze Jr. Jan 2013

How Can Sexed Semen Be Used In Commercial Beef Herds?, John B. Hall, J. Benton Glaze Jr.

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Gender selected or sexed semen has been commercially available to the dairy industry for almost a decade. However, sexed semen from beef bulls became commercially available only recently. The availability of sexed semen from beef bulls along with concerns about success of the technology at the ranch level has limited the use of sexed semen in purebred and commercial beef operations. Recent changes in semen availability combined with current studies with sexed beef semen are providing insights to the uses, limitations, opportunities, and challenges of this technology. Increased sorting capacity allowed the number of beef bulls with gender selected semen …

Dinosaurs And Pterosaurs In Greek And Roman Art And Literature? An Investigation Of Young-Earth Creationist Claims, Phil Senter Jan 2013

Dinosaurs And Pterosaurs In Greek And Roman Art And Literature? An Investigation Of Young-Earth Creationist Claims, Phil Senter

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Many young-Earth creationist (YEC) authors claim that ancient Greek and Roman writings describe dinosaurs and pterosaurs, and that Greco-Roman art illustrates Mesozoic reptiles. Such claims are used as "evidence" against evolutionary theory in an attempt to cast doubt on the separation of humans and such animals by millions of years. However, examination of the Greco-Roman materials in question reveals that none of them actually depict Mesozoic reptiles. In descriptions of "dragons" (Greek drak?n; Latin draco) in Greco-Roman literature-which YEC authors claim are dinosaurs-coils and the epithets ophis, serpens, and anguis reveal that the ancient authors are describing snakes, often large …

Los Parásitos Y El Estudio De Su Biodiversidad: Un Enfoque Sobre Los Estimadores De La Riqueza De Especies, Christian E. Bautista-Hernández, Scott Monks, Griselda Pulido-Flores
