Tools For Resilience Management: Multidisciplinary Development Of State-And-Transition Models For Northwest Colorado, Emily J. Kachergis, Corrie N. Knapp, Maria E. Fernandez-Gimenez, John P. Ritten, James G. Pritchett, Jay Parsons, Willow Hibbs, Roy Roath

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Building models is an important way of integrating knowledge. Testing and updating models of social-ecological systems can inform management decisions and, ultimately, improve resilience. We report on the outcomes of a six-year, multidisciplinary model development process in the sagebrush steppe, USA. We focused on creating state-and-transition models (STMs), conceptual models of ecosystem change that represent nonlinear dynamics and are being adopted worldwide as tools for managing ecosystems. STM development occurred in four steps with four distinct sets of models: (1) local knowledge elicitation using semistructured interviews; (2) ecological data collection using an observational study; (3) model integration using participatory workshops; …

Should We Award Mr. Sugano A Valid Patent: Rethinking The Federal Circuit's Rigid Written Description Requirement In Gene Patents, Ning Bao

UC Law Science and Technology Journal

Whether a separate written description exists in 35 U.S.C. § 112 of the United States Code has been the subject of much debate. In Ariad v. Eli Lilly, the Federal Circuit attempted to settle the issue. An en banc panel consisting of eleven judges decided the case; and the court also received twenty-five amicus briefs. The arguments encompassed statutory interpretation, legal precedence, and policy concerns. The nine-judge majority favored a separate written description requirement, while Judge Rader and Judge Linn strongly opposed the majority decision. Whether the holding in A riad is "correct" is beyond the scope of this note. …

Late Gestation Supplementation Of Beef Cows Differing In Body Condition Score: Effects On Cow And Calf Performance, D. W. Bohnert, L. A. Stalker, R. R. Mills, A. Nyman, S. J. Falck, R. F. Cooke Jan 2013

Late Gestation Supplementation Of Beef Cows Differing In Body Condition Score: Effects On Cow And Calf Performance, D. W. Bohnert, L. A. Stalker, R. R. Mills, A. Nyman, S. J. Falck, R. F. Cooke

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

A 2-yr study utilizing 120 mature, crossbred (Angus × Herford) cows/year, evaluated the influence of cow BCS and dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) supplementation during late gestation on cow performance and productivity of subsequent offspring. Treatments were arranged as a 2 × 2 factorial in a randomized complete block design with 2 BCS and with or without DDGS supplementation. Cows were nutritionally managed to enter the last trimester of gestation with a BCS of approximately 4 (LBCS) or 6 (HBCS) and were thereafter managed in a single herd (initial BCS were 4.4 and 5.7 for LBCS and HBCS treatments, …

Targeted And Microdose Chemical Applications, Stephen L. Young, D. K. Giles Jan 2013

Targeted And Microdose Chemical Applications, Stephen L. Young, D. K. Giles

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

In cropping systems, the precise application of herbicides is important for efficacious weed control. By using plant recognition and precision application technology targeting individual plants, off-target movement can be eliminated and herbicide rates significantly reduced without sacrificing yields. Highly targeted applications of nonselective herbicides into a growing sensitive crop are novel operations, nonexistent before the development of plant-specific targeting. New application technologies are essential when spatial rather than chemical selectively is to be deployed. In many potential applications, the chemical delivery system becomes the spatial resolution and speed limiting factor in the system.

Simulated Yield And Profitability Of Five Potential Crops For Intensifying The Dryland Wheat-Fallow Production System, S. A. Saseendran, David C. Nielsen, L.R. Ahuja, L. Ma, Drew J. Lyon Jan 2013

Simulated Yield And Profitability Of Five Potential Crops For Intensifying The Dryland Wheat-Fallow Production System, S. A. Saseendran, David C. Nielsen, L.R. Ahuja, L. Ma, Drew J. Lyon

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Greater precipitation use efficiency (PUE) and economic returns by increasing cropping frequency through the addition of summer crops to the dryland winter wheat-fallow (WF) cropping system have been reported in the semiarid Central Great Plains of USA. However, due to the highly variable nature of precipitation and uncertain water availability, selection of a crop with assured positive net returns to add to the system to increase cropping frequency is a challenge in the absence of reliable seasonal precipitation forecasts. The objective of this study was to evaluate long-term yields and net returns of several potential summer crops at various soil …

Pinto Beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.) As A Functional Food: Implications On Human Health, Cristiane R. S. Câmara, Carlos A. Urrea, Vicki Schlegel Jan 2013

Pinto Beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.) As A Functional Food: Implications On Human Health, Cristiane R. S. Câmara, Carlos A. Urrea, Vicki Schlegel

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Most foods are considered functional in terms of providing nutrients and energy to sustain daily life, but dietary systems that are capable of preventing or remediating a stressed or diseased state are classified as functional foods. Dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) contain high levels of chemically diverse components (phenols, resistance starch, vitamins, fructooligosaccharides) that have shown to protect against such conditions as oxidative stress, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and many types of cancer, thereby positioning this legume as an excellent functional food. Moreover, the United States has a rich dry bean history and is currently a top producer …

Identification Of Sources Of Resistance To Damping-Off And Early Root/Hypocotyl Damage From Rhizoctonia Solani In Common Bean (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.), P. A. Peña, James R, Steadman, Kent M. Eskridge, Carlos A. Urrea Jan 2013

Urrea

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Rhizoctonia solani causes economically important root and hypocotyl diseases in common bean throughout the world. Root health is a vital factor in plant development and root diseases would negatively influence water and nutrient uptake as well as cause direct stand reduction and root rot damage to the crop. An efficient common bean screening method to evaluate damping-off and early root/ hypocotyl damage from R. solani was developed and used to identify dry bean lines with levels of resistance to this disease. Two sets of 163 and 111 lines previously evaluated for drought tolerance in Nebraska and Puerto Rico were evaluated …
