It has been used extensively in Chemistry education, but its use is not well documented in other areas. This is a summary of the initial implementation of POGIL in a university biomechanics course and includes the benefits, challenges, and recommendations for teachers interested in using this effective instructional strategy.
Comparing Two-Year Community College And Four-Year University Student Social And Behavioral Sexually Transmitted Infection Risk Factors, Oswald M. Attin
Comparing Two-Year Community College And Four-Year University Student Social And Behavioral Sexually Transmitted Infection Risk Factors, Oswald M. Attin
Faculty Dissertations
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) could cause ectopic, cervical cancer, infertility, and organ damage to the heart, kidneys, and brain. This study compared several behavioral risk factors of STIs (condom use, number of sexual partners, type of sex (anal or vaginal) and drinking habits) between two distinct educational settings and their association with socioeconomic risk factors such as low income and parent’s lower level of education that are known to increase the incidence of STIs among college-aged students. This study was based on the precautionary-health-behavior model, where individuals act regardless of consequences, and the health-behavior-change model, where individual behaviors either increase …

A Street Child's Revolt Against Her Mother And Society: Lessons From Amma Darko's Faceless, Philomena Yeboah Ama Okyeso
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
The writings of Amma Darko rank among Africa’s great literature. In Faceless, Amma Darko uses conflicts that bedevil mother-daughter bonds to address larger issues such as streetism, patriarchy, government indifference, irresponsible parenting, and inefficiency in the police service. Faceless may appear to be primarily an investigation of the causes, effects, and solutions of streetism, yet it also has important things to say about both the destructive and regenerative potentials of mothers. The benefits of male–female collabo-ration in addressing developmental challenges are another topic that has acquired consid-erable space in this novel. It is these issues/topics that this study explores and …

Effects Of Storage Conditions On The Morphology And Titer Of Lentiviral Vectors, H. Rahman, Josephine Taylor, Beatrice Clack, R. S. Stewart, Sarah C. Canterberry
Faculty Publications
Lentiviral vectors are commonly used in laboratory experiments to stably integrate transgenes into host genomes. It has long been observed that storage of virus stocks leads to a decrease in viral titer, but the mechanisms driving this decrease have yet to be identified. To that end, lentiviral vector stocks were generated and stored as follows: room temperature for less than one hour, -80ºC for 24 hours, 4ºC for three days and 4ºC for 7 days. These stocks were subsequently evaluated with regard to their transducing ability and their morphology, specifically particle diameter. The vector that was stored at room temperature …

Understanding intraspecific variation in habitat use is important for the management of any species. In many studies of reptiles, habitat use by juveniles is poorly understood when compared to their adult conspecifics because of capture biases and logistical constraints. We compared habitat use between sexes and age classes of Common Watersnakes (Nerodia sipedon) at a reservoir in central Illinois. Juvenile N. sipedon occurred more frequently in habitat with high canopy cover, whereas adult N. sipedon, especially reproductive females, were found exclusively in habitat with no canopy cover. Adult males used both locations equally. We emphasize the need to investigate ontogenetic …

Organisms that adopt phenotypically plastic anti-predator strategies during larval stages may incur fitness costs later in development. These costs are typically difficult to define in many species. The difficulty of identifying ecological trade-offs may result from experimental comparisons that do not adequately mirror naturally occurring predator-prey relatioships. To examine this, we captured 61 newly metamorphosed Acris blanchardi from ponds dominated either by fish or invertebrate predators. These predators are known to induce alternate phenotypic anti-predator responses at the larval stage. We use jumping performance as a measure of post-metamorphic fitness, and compared the morphological traits and jumping ability of frogs …

Synergistic Effects Of The Invasive Chinese Tallow (Triadica Sebifera) And Climate Change On Aquatic Amphibian Survival, Daniel Saenz, Erin M. Fucik, Matthew Kwiatkowski
Faculty Publications
Changes in climate and the introduction of invasive species are two major stressors to amphibians, although little is known about the interaction between these two factors with regard to impacts on amphibians. We focused our study on an invasive tree species, the Chinese tallow (Triadica sebifera), that annually sheds its leaves and produces leaf litter that is known to negatively impact aquatic amphibian survival. The purpose of our research was to determine whether the timing of leaf fall from Chinese tallow and the timing of amphibian breeding (determined by weather) influence survival of amphibian larvae. We simulated a …

Ammonium Sulfate Precipitation Combined With Liquid Chromatography Is Sufficient For Purification Of Bovine Serum Albumin That Is Suitable For Most Routine Laboratory Applications, Odutayo O. Odunuge, Alina Shazhko

The use of bovine serum albumin (BSA) in routine biochemical assays such as restriction enzyme digestion and immunodetection is plagued largely by two common contaminants, DNase and immunoglobulins G (IgGs). Acetylation of BSA to inactivate DNase limits its use as a protein standard due to interference with color development in assays such as Lowry’s. In spite of the availability of inexpensive BSA, its purification involves several cumbersome and time-consuming steps. In this work, we employed a modified strategy of ammonium sulfate precipitation coupled with liquid chromatography to purify BSA that is free of DNase and IgGs. Purified BSA tested negative …

Supervised Agricultural Experience Programs And The Importance Of Implementing Them In A High School Agriculture Program, Monica Moules
Agricultural Education and Communication
The purpose of this project was to develop a promotional video about Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) programs in a high school agriculture program. It was created to show the importance of SAE’s and the benefits students can gain from having an SAE. In order to capture a wide array of opinions the project includes interviews both from agriculture teachers and students to diversify the importance of having SAE’s in an agriculture program. The video shows how both students and teachers benefit from having SAE’s and why they are so crucial to a successful high school agriculture program.

Saving The World’S Remaining Tigers: Panthera’S Work And The Role Of Non-Profits In Wildlife Conservation, John Byrne
Student Theses 2001-2013
This report will examine the conservation status of the tiger and measures that have been taken to protect wild populations. A discussion of its ecology and behavior is included to convey the variety of needs that are associated with establishing areas that can sustain viable populations. A look at the main threats that tigers face is crucial to understanding the conservation strategies that should be employed, and so these points will also be addressed. Focal to the report, however, will be the efforts of Panthera and its emergence onto the conservation scene as an organization that can be considered the …
The Centrality Of Ecological Design: Achieving Sustainability In An Era Of Free-Market Capitalist Framework, Eddy Andrade
The Centrality Of Ecological Design: Achieving Sustainability In An Era Of Free-Market Capitalist Framework, Eddy Andrade
Student Theses 2001-2013
Sustainability has become a key word in describing the role of the environmental movement in society today. Capitalism makes it difficult to achieve environmental goals because the priority of a capitalist system is achieving wealth through limitless economic growth. The goals set forth by sustainability aim to make cities function more like natural ecosystems through sustainable design practices such as bio mimicry. Capitalism and sustainability are at odds with each other and their ultimate goals are in direct conflict with their own respective frameworks. In the following paper I will discuss how design can be used to mitigate many of …

Coordinated Dynamic Gene Expression Changes In The Central Nucleus Of The Amygdala During Alcohol Withdrawal., Kate Freeman, Mary M. Staehle, Rajanikanth Vadigepalli, Gregory E Gonye, Babatunde A Ogunnaike, Jan B Hoek, James S Schwaber
College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research
BACKGROUND: Chronic alcohol use causes widespread changes in the cellular biology of the amygdala's central nucleus (CeA), a GABAergic center that integrates autonomic physiology with the emotional aspects of motivation and learning. While alcohol-induced neurochemical changes play a role in dependence and drinking behavior, little is known about the CeA's dynamic changes during withdrawal, a period of emotional and physiologic disturbance.
METHODS: We used a qRT-PCR platform to measure 139 transcripts in 92 rat CeA samples from control (N = 33), chronically alcohol exposed (N = 26), and withdrawn rats (t = 4, 8, 18, 32, and 48 hours; N …
Valuation Of Recreational Beach Quality And Water Quality Management Strategies In Oahu, Jerrod M. Penn
Valuation Of Recreational Beach Quality And Water Quality Management Strategies In Oahu, Jerrod M. Penn
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
Hawaii’s pristine ocean and tropical environment is a keystone of Hawaii tourism and the state economy. Water pollution from stormwater and development threatens the beach quality to both residents and tourists. In order to understand the lost nonmarket value, we assess changes in quality of beach characteristics including water and sand quality, swimming safety conditions, and congestion using a Discrete Choice Experiment of recreational beach users. Further, we study willingness to pay (WTP) for water management strategies in Hawaii using another discrete choice experiment, including structural and nonstructural Best Management Practices, testing, monitoring, and educational efforts.

Feeling Empty? Organ Trafficking & Trade: The Black Market For Human Organs, Jacqueline Bowden
Intercultural Human Rights Law Review
Organ trafficking is the recruitment, transport, transfer, harboring, or receipt of persons by means of force, fraud, coercion, abduction, positions of vulnerability and exploitation, with the purpose being the removal of their organ(s) for transplantation. Currently, organ trafficking is affecting countries such as China, Mexico, Kosovo, South Africa, Mozambique, India, the Unites States, and Israel. These countries each play different roles in organ trafficking; some serve as countries of origin, others are destination countries, and a few are both origin and destination countries. This article will examine (1) the history of organ trafficking and how it takes place, and (2) …

Factors Affecting Uptake Of, And Adherence To, Treatment For Latent Tuberculosis Infection In Ventanilla, Peru, Mariano Matias Iberico Lozada
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
In Peru, treatment for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) with isoniazid is free for all people younger than 20 who have been in close contact with a person with active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). Despite the availability of this drug therapy within the context of a TB control program that exceeds the international standards for TB care, very few children access, and even fewer complete a full course of treatment. This study was done in order to understand which factors contribute to latent tuberculosis infection treatment uptake and adherence, and whether a socio-economic intervention could improve uptake and adherence of treatment for …
