Function Of Dorsal Fins In Bamboo Shark During Steady Swimming, Anabela Maia, Cheryl Wilga
Function Of Dorsal Fins In Bamboo Shark During Steady Swimming, Anabela Maia, Cheryl Wilga
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
To gain insight into the function of the dorsal fins in white-spotted bamboo sharks (Orectolobiformes: Hemiscyillidae) during steady swimming, data on three-dimensional kinematics and electromyographic recordings were collected. Bamboo sharks were induced to swim at 0.5 and 0.75 body lengths per second in a laminar flow tank. Displacement, lag and angles were analyzed from high-speed video images. Onset, offset, duration, duty cycle and asynchrony index were calculated from three muscle implants on each side of each dorsal fin. The dorsal fins were displaced more laterally than the undulating body. In addition, the dorsal tips had larger lateral displacement than the …

The Spatial Distribution Of The Japanese Beetle, Popillia Japonica, In Soybean Fields, Stacey A. Sara, Emily B. Mccallen, Paul V. Switzer
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
The Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica Newman (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), is a serious pest of many agricultural and horticultural plants. Relatively little research has investigated the distributions of Japanese beetles in agricultural fields, and this lack of information makes pest management more difficult. In the present study, the spatial distribution of Japanese beetles in soybean fields was examined. Specifically, how the distribution and abundance of beetles was affected by distance from an edge, edge direction, and edge type was examined. An edge effect for density was discovered; beetle numbers decreased significantly with increasing distance from the field edge. The east and south …

Ecotoxicological studies that focus on a single endpoint might not accurately and completely represent the true ecological effects of a contaminant. Exposure to atrazine, a widely used herbicide, disrupts endocrine function and sexual development in amphibians, but studies involving live-bearing reptiles are lacking. This study tracks several effects of atrazine ingestion from female Northern Watersnakes (Nerodia sipedon) to their offspring exposed in utero. Twenty-five gravid N. sipedon were fed fish dosed with one of the four levels of atrazine (0, 2, 20, or 200 ppb) twice weekly for the entirety of their gestation period. Endpoints for the mothers included blood …

Thrombomodulin (TM) and endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR) are 2 transmembrane proteins that are thought to play an important role in cancer. We aimed to discover whether these 2 proteins are prognostic indicators in colorectal cancer. Materials and methods: Plasma TM and EPCR levels were measured using the ELISA method in 50 patients in different tumor stages that had been recently diagnosed with colorectal cancer and in a healthy control group of 50 people. Results: In colorectal cancer patients, higher plasma TM (21.3 ± 22.8 ng/mL, 13.2 ± 16.2 ng/mL, P = 0.010) and plasma EPCR levels (149.9 ± 79.6, …

Vitamin D level could be related to blood pressure and cardiovascular health. However, the direct suppressor effect of vitamin D on vascular contraction has not yet been explored. Therefore, the effects of alfacalcidol (1\alpha-hydroxyvitamin D_3) and calcitriol (1\alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D_3) on contractions induced by phenylephrine (10^{-8} to 10^{-5} M) in mice aorta were investigated. Materials and methods: Arterial rings were suspended in isolated organ chambers filled with Krebs bicarbonate solution gassed with 95% O_2 and 5% CO_2 maintained at 37 °C. Tissue responses were recorded isometrically with a force transducer and displayed on an acquisition system. Alfacalcidol and calcitriol were applied …

Series Solutions For Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations With Slip Boundary Conditions For Non-Newtonian Mhd Fluid In Porous Space, A. Zeeshan, R. Ellahi
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The fully developed flow of an incompressible, thermodynamically compatible non-Newtonian magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) fluid in a pipe with porous space and partial slip is studied in this paper. Two illustrative models of viscosity namely (i) Constant model and (ii) Variable model are considered. Series solutions for nonlinear coupled partial differential equations are first developed and then convergence of the obtained series solutions has been discussed explicitly. The recurrence formulae for finding the coefficients are also given in each case. Finally the role of pertinent parameters is illustrated graphically.
Reclaiming Hazelwood: Public School Classrooms And A Return To The Supreme Court's Vision For Viewpoint-Specific Speech Regulation Policy, Brad Dickens
Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest
Federal and circuit courts continue to fiercely debate whether the Supreme Court's 1988 ruling in Hazelwood v. Kuhineier requires school policies regulating student speech and expression to be viewpoint neutral. However, this note suggests that the language of Hazelwood itself shows that the Circuit debate may be misguided. The Supreme Court intended Hazelwood to stand as a narrow exception to its earlier holding in Tinker, and Hazelwood only applies in instances where the government's own voice is implicated, largely in a public context. When the school, and in effect the government, is speaking with its own voice, the school must …

Effect Of Pond Ash On Pen Surface Properties, B. L. Woodbury, R. A. Eigenberg, D. B. Parker, M. J. Spiehs
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
The maintenance of feedlot pen surfaces, which includes removal of manure and replacement of fill soil, is a time-consuming and expensive process. Pond ash (PA), a by-product of coal-fired electrical generation, has been proposed as a feedlot pen surface amendment because of its foundational support characteristics. A study was conducted to compare the performance of PA-surfaced pens to traditional soil-surfaced (SS) pens. Four of eight SS pens (7.3 m × 20.7 m) were excavated to a depth of 0.5 m and resurfaced with PA. The remaining four pens were kept as SS. Eight heifers were housed in each pen (19 …

Bovine peripheral lymph nodes (LNs), including subiliac LNs, have been identified as a potential source of human exposure to Salmonella enterica, when adipose trim containing these nodes is incorporated into ground beef. In order to gain a better understanding of the burden of S. enterica in peripheral LNs of feedlot and cull cattle, a cross-sectional study was undertaken in which 3327 subiliac LNs were collected from cattle at harvest in seven plants, located in three geographically distinct regions of the United States. Samples were collected in three seasons: Fall 2010, Winter/Spring 2011, and Summer/Fall 2011. A convenience sample of …

Cell lines CΔ2+ and CΔ2- were developed from monocytes obtained from 10-month-old, crossbred, female pig. These cells morphologically resembled macrophages, stained positively for α-naphthyl esterase and negatively for peroxidase. The cell lines were bactericidal and highly phagocytic. Both cell lines expressed the porcine cell-surface molecules MHCI, CD11b, CD14, CD16, CD172, and small amounts of CD2; however, only minimal amounts of CD163 were measured. The lines were negative for the mouse marker H2Kk, bovine CD2 control, and secondary antibody control. Additionally, cells tested negative for Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus and Porcine Circovirus Type 2. Therefore, these cells resembled porcine …

Characterization Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Strains Isolated From Supershedding Cattle, Terrance M. Arthur, Rafiq Ahmed, Margo Chase-Topping, Norasak Kalchayanand, John W. Schmidt, James L. Bono
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Previous reports have indicated that a small proportion of cattle shedding high levels of Escherichia coli O157:H7 is the main source for transmission of this organism between animals. Cattle achieving a fecal shedding status of 104 CFU of E. coli O157: H7/gram or greater are now referred to as supershedders. The aim of this study was to investigate the contribution of E. coli O157:H7 strain type to supershedding and to determine if supershedding was restricted to a specific set of E. coli O157:H7 strains. Fecal swabs (n=5,086) were collected from cattle at feedlots or during harvest. Supershedders constituted 2.0% …

Characterization Of Ovine Nectin-4, A Novel Peste Des Petits Ruminants Virus Receptor, Jamie Birch, Nicholas Juleff, Michael P. Heaton, Ted Kalbfleisch, James Kijas, Dalan Bailey
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Small ruminants infected with peste des petits ruminants virus exhibit lesions typical of epithelial infection and necrosis. However, the only established host receptor for this virus is the immune cell marker signaling lymphocyte activation molecule (SLAM). We have confirmed that the ovine Nectin-4 protein, when overexpressed in epithelial cells, permits efficient replication of PPRV. Furthermore, this gene was predominantly expressed in epithelial tissues and encoded by multiple haplotypes in sheep breeds from around the world.

The Plasminogen Activator System In The Ovine Placentome During Late Gestation And Stage-Two Of Parturition, Anthony K. Mcneel, Robert A. Cushman, Jeffrey L. Vallet
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
The process of placental separation is not completely understood. In domestic animals, especially cattle, it is important that expulsion of the fetal membranes takes place in a timely manner in order to achieve maximal reproductive efficiency. The activity of the matrix-metalloprotease (MMP) family of proteases is known to be reduced in placentomes fromcases of retained placenta. Members of theMMPfamily are known to be activated by the plasminogen activator (PA) family of proteases. We hypothesized that the expression and activity of the PA family increase in the cotyledon and/or caruncle as parturition approaches, with maximal expression and activity at parturition. To test …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLV) adversely affect production and well-being of sheep and goats throughout much of the world. The SRLV, including ovine progressive pneumonia virus (OPPV) in North America, cause lifetime infections, and management procedures to eradicate or reduce disease prevalence are costly. Variants of ovine transmembrane protein 154 gene (TMEM154) affect susceptibility to OPPV. The primary experimental objective was to estimate additive and dominance effects of TMEM154 haplotypes 1 and 3 on susceptibility to OPPV infection following natural exposure. A group of 187 trial lambs was born and raised by mature, infected ewes to ensure natural exposure …
