Ovarian cancer, which is the leading cause of death from gynecological malignancies, is a heterogeneous disease known to be associated with disruption of multiple signaling pathways. Nevertheless, little is known regarding the role of protein phosphatases in the signaling events that underlie the disease; such knowledge will be essential to gain a complete understanding of the etiology of the disease and how to treat it. We have demonstrated that protein-tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) was underexpressed in a panel of ovarian carcinoma-derived cell lines, compared with immortalized human ovarian surface epithelial cell lines. Stable restoration of PTP1B in those cancer cell …

Expression of A53T mutant human alpha-synuclein under the mouse prion promoter is among the most successful transgenic models of Parkinson's disease. Accumulation of A53T alpha-synuclein causes adult mice to develop severe motor impairment resulting in early death at 8-12 months of age. In younger, pre-symptomatic animals, altered motor activity and anxiety-like behaviors have also been reported. These behavioral changes, which precede severe neuropathology, may stem from non-pathological functions of alpha-synuclein, including modulation of monoamine neurotransmission. Our analysis over the adult life-span of motor activity, anxiety-like, and depressive-like behaviors identifies perturbations both before and after the onset of disease. Young A53T …

BACKGROUND: The cleavage-stage mouse embryo is composed of superficially equivalent blastomeres that will generate both the embryonic inner cell mass (ICM) and the supportive trophectoderm (TE). However, it remains unsettled whether the contribution of each blastomere to these two lineages can be accounted for by chance. Addressing the question of blastomere cell fate may be of practical importance, because preimplantation genetic diagnosis requires removal of blastomeres from the early human embryo. To determine whether blastomere allocation to the two earliest lineages is random, we developed and utilized a recombination-mediated, noninvasive combinatorial fluorescent labeling method for embryonic lineage tracing. RESULTS: When …

Foreword To Symposium Volume: The Tennessee Valley Authority (Tva) V. Hill: The Greatest Little Story Never Told, Becky Jacobs
College of Law Faculty Scholarship
In 1978, the U.S. Supreme Court determined that Congress intended the Endangered Species Act to afford "the highest of priorities" to endangered species. (Tennessee Valley Authority v. Hill; 437 U.S. 153). The Court's ruling prevented -- at least, for a period of time -- the completion of TVA's Tellico dam project. Since then, it has been endlessly evaluated, celebrated, excoriated, and commemorated. The "snail darter" case (as it has come to be known) has captivated an entire generation of environmental and natural resources law academics, practitioners, and students, and its influence persists some thirty-plus years later. Indeed, the case made …

Background: The white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is a globally distributed, apex predator possessing physical, physiological, and behavioral traits that have garnered it significant public attention. In addition to interest in the genetic basis of its form and function, as a representative of the oldest extant jawed vertebrate lineage, white sharks are also of conservation concern due to their small population size and threat from overfishing. Despite this, surprisingly little is known about the biology of white sharks, and genomic resources are unavailable. To address this deficit, we combined Roche-454 and Illumina sequencing technologies to characterize the first …

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
Three cohorts of entering freshman women were assessed over the course of four years at Brigham Young University (BYU). The Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) and the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) were administered at the beginning of each fall and winter semester. Results showed (a) steadily decreasing average levels of eating disorder risk and body shape dissatisfaction over time, which was mirrored in each cohort; (b) significantly lower eating disorder risk than other college samples; (c) a typically high percentage of women with clinically significant body shape dissatisfaction; (d) significant correlation between the EAT-26 and the BSQ; and (e) notable subgroups …

Baptized In Acid Or Breathed With Life? An Exploration Of Psychology's Bridging Capacity, Michael J. Richardson
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
Three influences are described as contributing to a changing understanding of “secular” that ultimately excluded a consideration of theistic considerations: First, the separation of religious and scientific domains following Cartesian dualism opened the door for the popularization of a naturalistic science with a central characteristic of being independent of theistic considerations. Dualism eventually emphasized a distinction between subjective and objective experiences, rather than a distinction between spiritual and material realities—allowing the possibility of a purely naturalistic dualism. Second, naturalistic science made inroads back into traditionally religious questions involving the “objective” realm, particularly through the work of Charles Darwin. Third, drawing …

H-Ns Is A Negative Regulator Of The Two Hemolysin/Cytotoxin Gene Clusters In Vibrio Anguillarum, Xiangyu Mou, Edward J. Spinard, Maureen V. Driscoll, Weinjing Zhao, David R. Nelson
Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications
Hemolysins produced by Vibrio anguillarum have been implicated in the development of hemorrhagic septicemia during vibriosis, a fatal fish disease. Previously, two hemolysin gene clusters responsible for the hemolysis and cytotoxicity of V. anguillarum were identified: the vah1-plp gene cluster and the rtxACHBDE gene cluster. In this study, we identified the hns gene, which encodes the H-NS protein and acts as a negative regulator of both gene clusters. The V. anguillarum H-NS protein shares strong homology with other bacterial H-NS proteins. An hns mutant exhibited increased hemolytic activity and cytotoxicity compared to the wild-type strain. Complementation of the hns mutation …

Inactivation Of Tor Proteins Affects The Dynamics Of Endocytic Proteins In Early Stage Of Endocytosis, B Tenay, E Kimberlin, M Williams, D Juliette, J Fakilahyel, Kyoungtae Kim
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
Tor2 is an activator of the Rom2/Rho1 pathway that regulates α-factor internalization. Since the recruitment of endocytic proteins such as actin-binding proteins and the amphiphysins precedes the internalization of α-factor, we hypothesized that loss of Tor function leads to an alteration in the dynamics of the endocytic proteins. We report here that endocytic proteins, Abp1 and Rvs167, are less recruited to endocytic sites not only in tor2 but also tor1 mutants. Furthermore, we found that the endocytic proteins Rvs167 and Sjl2 are completely mistargeted to the cytoplasm in tor1Δtor2ts double mutant cells. We also demonstrate here that the efficiency of …

Enhancing The Koinonia At Camp Creek Baptist Church In Union Mills, North Carolina, By Expanding "Sacred Space", Tony Dwayne Mccraw
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Since the day of Pentecost, the defining characteristic of the church has been the extraordinary bond of unity and fellowship amongst Christians. Scripture refers to this intense sharing of life as koinonia. Fellowship, however, is often neglected in deference to earthly priorities.
This project aimed to inspire and enable the members of Camp Creek Baptist Church to practice the type of fellowship descriptive of first-century Christianity. Through studying Scripture, analyzing social demographics, and conducting statistical analyses, a solution for enhancing the koinonia. at CCBC emerged--namely, the regular gathering of its members into one another's homes, thereby expanding "sacred space."
The Cai Model With Time Delay: Existence Of Periodic Solutions And Asymptotic Analysis, Carlo Bianca, Massimiliano Ferrara, Luca Guerrini
The Cai Model With Time Delay: Existence Of Periodic Solutions And Asymptotic Analysis, Carlo Bianca, Massimiliano Ferrara, Luca Guerrini
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The economic growth model with endogenous labor shift under a dual economy proposed by Cai [Applied Mathematics Letters 21, 774-779 (2008)] is generalized in this paper by introducing a time delay in the physical capital. By choosing the delay as a bifurcation parameter, it is proved that the delayed model has unique nonzero equilibrium and a Hopf bifurcation is proven to exist as the delay crosses a critical value. Moreover the direction of the Hopf bifurcation and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions are investigated in this paper by applying the center manifold theorem and the normal form theory.

Estimation Of The Weibull Parameters By Kullback-Leibler Divergence Of Survival Functions, Gholamhossein Yari, Alireza Mirhabibi, Abolfazl Saghafi
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Recently, a new entropy based divergence measure has been introduced which is much like Kullback-Leibler divergence. This entropy measures the distance between an empirical and a prescribed survival function and is a lot easier to compute in continuous distributions than the K-L divergence. In this paper we show that this distance converges to zero with increasing sample size and we apply it to estimate Weibull parameters. Detailed simulations show a higher performance of the new estimation method than the commonly used maximum likelihood and linear regression methods in Weibull scale parameter estimation. Using unbiasing factors provided in this paper for …

Stability And Boundedness For A Kind Of Non-Autonomous Differential Equations With Constant Delay, Cemil Tunc
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
We establish some new sufficient conditions to the uniform asymptotically stability and boundedness of the solutions for a kind of non-autonomous differential equations of third order with constant delay. By defining an appropriate Lyapunov functional, we prove two new theorems on the subject. Our results improve and form a complement to some known recent results in the literature.

Optimization Of Prediction Error In Co2 Laser Cutting Process By Taguchi Artificial Neural Network Hybrid With Genetic Algorithm, Y. Nukman, M. A. Hassan, M .Z. Harizam
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Simulation and prediction of CO2 laser cutting of Perspex glass has been done by feed forward back propagation Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Experimental data of Taguchi orthogonal array L9 was used to train the ANN model. The simulation results were evaluated and verified with the experiment. In some cases, the prediction errors of Taguchi ANN model was larger than 10% even with Levenberg Marquardt training algorithm. To overcome such problem, a hybrid genetic algorithm-based Taguchi ANN (GA-Taguchi ANN) has been developed. The potential of genetic algorithm in optimization was utilized in the proposed hybrid model to minimize the error prediction …

Factually Innocent Without Dna? An Analysis Of Utah's Factual Innocence Statute, Nic Caine
Utah OnLaw: The Utah Law Review Online Supplement
Since 1989, DNA evidence has fueled the innocence movement, helping hundreds prove their innocence and obtain freedom. DNA technology has been an invaluable development for the innocence movement, and DNA technology will continue to advance and improve in the future. DNA evidence is not available in the majority of cases, however, and many believe that DNA exonerations will eventually diminish as DNA analysis becomes more widely available. Furthermore, “for every DNA exoneree there are hundreds if not over a thousand wrongfully convicted defendants whose cases do not contain biological evidence that could prove innocence.”150 It is time for other states …

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications
The field of public engagement, participation and deliberation is fraught with conflicting results that are difficult to interpret due to the very different methods and measures used. Theory advancement and consistent operationalization and assessment of key public deliberation and engagement variables will benefit considerably from standardized measures of constructs and the ability to compare across studies. In this article, drawing from social and educational psychology, we describe the theoretical bases for scales assessing eight varieties of participant engagement that may be experienced during participation activities: Active learning, conscientious, uninterested, creative, open-minded, closed-minded, angry, and social engagement. We describe our development …

Meprin Interaction With Osteosarcoma 9 (Os9) And The Hypoxia Response Gene, Hypoxia Inducible Factor 1 (Hif1) Alpha, In Kidney Tubular Cells, Barry L. Martin
Theses
Meprins, metalloproteases that are highly expressed in the brush-border membranes of kidney proximal tubules, have been associated with ischemia-reperfusion induced kidney injury. Osteosarcoma 9 (OS9), a peripheral membrane protein, has been shown to selectively interact with the carboxyl-terminal tail of meprin beta (β). Additionally, OS9 was shown to promote oxygen-dependent degradation of the hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF1α), a protein involved in oxygen homeostasis. However, it is not known if OS9 is a meprin substrate. The objective of this study was to determine if OS9 is a meprin substrate, and whether there is a correlation between expression of meprins, OS9, and …

Synthetic Design Of Coumarin And 2h-Chromene-2-Thione Derivatives To Inhibit Carcinogenesis, Rhashanda D. Haywood
Theses
The goal of this project was the synthesis of 4-substitued coumarins and 2H-chromene-2-thione derivatives that can be used to inhibit or retard the growth of cancer cells. According to the American Cancer Society's 2012 death statistics for prostate cancer, 28,170 men died from prostate cancer and there was 241,740 (29%) new cases of prostate cancer as well (Society, 2012). Few studies have been conducted on 2H-chromene-2-thiones and their ability to act as cancer chemopreventive or anticancer agents, therefore, we seek to synthesize a sequence of coumarins and 2H-chromene-2-thiones via the Von Pechmann reaction. We believe that the 2H chromene-2-thiones will …

Effect Of Soil And Irrigation Water On Microbial Quality Of Fresh Produce Grown In North Carolina, Tracie Davis
Theses
Foodborne outbreaks involving Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enteritidis, and E. coli O157:H7 from contaminated fresh produce have been increasingly recognized all over the world. The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of irrigation water and soil on microbial quality of leafy greens and tomatoes grown in different parts of North Carolina (NC). Soil and water samples were collected from 4 small farms located in NC and inoculated onto selective media (TSA for total aerobic count, XLT4 for Salmonella spp. (SS), and MacConkey for total E. coli species, EC). All plates were incubated for 48 hours at 37°C. Following …
