Bone Morphogenetic Protein-7 Attenuates Inflammation And Apoptosis And Improves Cardiac Function In Diabetes, Princess Urbina
Bone Morphogenetic Protein-7 Attenuates Inflammation And Apoptosis And Improves Cardiac Function In Diabetes, Princess Urbina
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bone Morphogenetic Protein-7 (BMP-7) belongs to the transforming growth factor-β (TGFβ) family of cytokines has is known to have potent anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used in patients to treat osteoporosis clinically and has been reported to treat diabetic nephropathy in murine models. Moreover, studies show that inflammation is up-regulated in patients with pre-diabetes (PD). We, therefore, hypothesize that the administration of BMP-7 will attenuate inflammation in the heart of Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced PD mice. In this study, we divided C57Bl/6 mice into three groups: CONTROL, PD, and PD+BMP-7. CONTROL mice received intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections of Sodium Citrate Buffer while PD …

Layered Hepatocytes And Endothelial Cells On A Transwell Membrane: Toward Engineering The Liver Sinusoid, Young Bok (Abraham) Kang, Joseph Cirillo, Siddhartha Rawat, Michael Bouchard, Hongseok (Moses) Noh

This paper presents a novel liver model that mimics the liver sinusoid where most liver activities occur. A key aspect of our current liver model is a layered co-culture of primary rat hepatocytes (PRHs) and primary rat liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) or bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs) on a transwell membrane. When a layered co-culture was attempted with a thin Matrigel layer placed between hepatocytes and endothelial cells to mimic the space of Disse, the cells did not form completely separated monolayers. However, when hepatocytes and endothelial cells were cultured on the opposite sides of a transwell membrane, PRHs …

Using Best Professional Judgment To Create Biological Benchmarks For Habitat Assessment Of Wetlands And Oak Savannas In Northwestern Indiana, Brad Gordon
Master of Environmental Science (MES) Theses
The Tolleston Strandplain at the southern end of Lake Michigan offers a unique “dune and swale” topography supporting oak savannas on the dunes and a mosaic of wetland communities in the swales. Following years of human degradation, the sites in this area are now being restored. In this effort, assessments of vegetative quality in these sites have been necessary for proper management decisions. However, it is poorly understood what indices best reflect the vegetative quality of these oak savannas and wetlands. A potential method for determining the best indices for these community types is to use benchmarks that employ expert …

The Impact Of Evangelical Gender Roles On College Females' Vocational Aspirations, Amy L. Wilson
The Impact Of Evangelical Gender Roles On College Females' Vocational Aspirations, Amy L. Wilson
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
The purpose of this study was to understand the impact Evangelical gender roles have on college females’ vocational aspirations. The participants were divided into two groups based on common Evangelical gender roles, Complementarianism and Egalitarianism. Groups were determined by the participants’ responses to a gender role ideology inventory that was completed prior to qualitative interviews with the researcher. The research was guided by one research question:
1) How do Evangelical gender role perspectives impact college females’ vocational aspirations?
The study was rooted in grounded theory; therefore a core story emerged from participants: Evangelical college females heard conflicting messages and internalized …
A Model Of Faith-Learning Integration In Exemplary Teaching Faculty, Kathryn A. Westrate
A Model Of Faith-Learning Integration In Exemplary Teaching Faculty, Kathryn A. Westrate
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
The integration of faith and learning serves as a central tenet for Christian higher education. Though valued for its guiding principles of faithful scholarship, the ambiguous and philosophical nature of the concept leaves a gap of understanding of how faith-learning is actualized, let alone actualized excellently, in the classroom. In order to explore the essence of the concept, 11 academic teaching faculty members selected for their exemplary faith-learning work from a small faith-based liberal arts institution were interviewed. Representing a diverse field of disciplines, the interviews explored the faculty members’ excellence in faith-learning conceptualization and practice. Strong emergent themes resulted …

Social Media And Collective Intelligence: Ongoing And Future Research Streams, Detlef Schoder, Peter Gloor, P. Takis Metaxas
Faculty Research and Scholarship
The tremendous growth in the use of Social Media has led to radical paradigm shifts in the ways we communicate, collaborate, consume, and create information. Our focus in this special issue is on the reciprocal interplay of Social Media and Collective Intelligence. We therefore discuss constituting attributes of Social Media and Collective Intelligence, and we structure the rapidly growing body of literature including adjacent research streams such as Social Network Analysis, Web Science, and Computational Social Science. We conclude by making propositions for future research where in particular the disciplines of artificial intelligence, computer science, and information systems can substantially …

The primary goal of the human microbiome initiative has been to increase our understanding of the structure and function of our indigenous microbiota and their effects on human health and predisposition to disease. Because of its clinical importance and accessibility for in vivo study, the oral biofilm is one of the best-understood microbial communities associated with the human body. Studies have shown that there is a succession of select microbial interactions that directs the maturation of a defined community structure, generating the formation of dental plaque. Although the initiating factors that lead to disease development are not clearly defined, in …

The Female Condition During Mussolini’S And Salazar’S Regimes, Mariya Chokova

This work analyzes the official political discourse and gender ideology of Mussolini’s fascist regime in Italy and Salazar’s right-wing dictatorship in Portugal. The first two chapters are dedicated to a closer examination of how the two political leaders viewed woman’s role in Italian and Portuguese society, respectively, what reasons they gave to justify their stance on gender (un)equality and how the general public responded to the gender politics the two regimes embraced. While Mussolini’s and Salazar’s dictatorships were both on the right end of the political spectrum and shared nationalistic characteristics, in my analysis, I aim to draw the reader’s …

How Women Experience And Embody Privilege In Elite Liberal Arts Colleges, Priscilla Devon Gutierrez
How Women Experience And Embody Privilege In Elite Liberal Arts Colleges, Priscilla Devon Gutierrez
Honors Thesis Collection
Researcher Shamus Khan (2011) understands “privilege” as the ability to be at ease in a multitude of social situations and to function facilely within these situations. While it is a skill proven to be desirable in both school and the job market, only certain lifestyles and institutions, such as elite boarding schools, have traditionally fostered its development. My thesis research looks at the experience and embodiment of privilege among female students on elite liberal arts college campuses, both single-sex and co-educational. Using longitudinal data from the New England Consortium on Assessment and Student Learning (NECASL), I compare the ways in …

Parkinson’s disease is a common neurodegenerative disorder characterized by tremors and motors deficits, caused by the death of dopaminergic neurons and the resulting dopamine depletion in the brain. Examination of the substantia nigra of the brains of Parkinson’s patients reveals abnormal intraneruonal deposition of fibrillar aggregates of the protein alpha-synuclein. While Parkinson’s disease is generally idiopathic in origin, several mutations in alpha-synuclein have been shown to increase the likelihood of the disease. This further implicates alpha-synuclein in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease. This report focuses on wild type alpha-synuclein. A 31-residue peptide corresponding to residues 6-36 of the N-terminus of …
