Novel Biphenyl Ureas As Regulators Of The Trace Amine Associated Receptor, Alyssa Snyder

McNair Scholars Journal

The thyroid hormone (TH) regulates many physiological functions in vertebrates including the cardiovascular system, metabolism, brain development, and growth. This can lead to serious physiological complications for patients suffering from a thyroid disorder. According to the American Thyroid Association as many as 20 million Americans suffer from thyroid diseases and 60% are unaware of their condition. Many people are misdiagnosed or symptoms go unrecognized because thyroid hormone biology is complicated and not completely understood. Consequently, the treatments for thyroid disorders are limited. The most common treatment is Synthroid, a synthetic thyroid hormone, which is taken orally and is one of …

To Tell Or Not To Tell? Youth's Responses To Unwanted Internet Experiences., Gisela Priebe, Kimberly J. Mitchell, David Finkelhor

Psychology

Abstract

This study is one of the first that investigated youth's response to unwanted Internet experiences, not only for those youth who were bothered or distressed but for all youth who reported the experience. Three types of response were examined: telling someone about the incident and ending the unwanted situation by active or passive coping. Responses to the following unwanted Internet experiences were analysed: Sexual solicitation, online harassment and unwanted exposure to pornography. The study was based on data from the Third Youth Internet Safety Survey (YISS-3), a telephone survey with a nationally representative U.S. sample of 1,560 Internet users, …

Quantifying The Loss Of A Marine Ecosystem Service: Filtration By The Eastern Oyster In Us Estuaries, Philine S. E. Zu Ermgassen, Mark D. Spalding, Raymond E. Grizzle, Robert D. Brumbaugh

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

The oyster habitat in the USA is a valuable resource that has suffered significant declines over the past century. While this loss of habitat is well documented, the loss of associated ecosystem services remains poorly quantified. Meanwhile, ecosystem service recovery has become a major impetus for restoration. Here we propose a model for estimating the volume of water filtered by oyster populations under field conditions and make estimates of the contribution of past (c. 1880–1910) and present (c. 2000–2010) oyster populations to improving water quality in 13 US estuaries. We find that filtration capacity of oysters has declined almost universally …

Nonlinear Differential Equations With “Maxima”: Parametric Stability In Terms Of Two Measures, Martin J. Bohner, Atanaska T. Georgieva, Snezhana G. Hristova

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper investigates parametric stability for nonlinear differential equations with “maxima”. Several sufficient conditions for parametric stability as well as uniform parametric stability are obtained based on the Razumikhin method. Two different types of Lyapunov functions have been applied. A comparison with scalar ordinary differential equations is offered.

Hopf Bifurcations In A Delayed-Energy-Based Model Of Capital Accumulation, Carlo Bianca, Massimiliano Ferrara, Luca Guerrini Jan 2013

Hopf Bifurcations In A Delayed-Energy-Based Model Of Capital Accumulation, Carlo Bianca, Massimiliano Ferrara, Luca Guerrini

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Building on a contribution by Dalgaard and Strulik [C.L. Dalgaard and H. Strulik, Resource and Energy Economics 33, 782 (2011)], this paper deals with the mathematical modelling for an economy viewed as a transport network for energy in which the law of motion of capital occurs with a time delay. By choosing time delay as a bifurcation parameter, it is proved that the system loses stability and a Hopf bifurcation occurs when time delay passes through critical values. An important scenario arising from the analysis is the existence of limit cycles generated by supercritical Hopf bifurcations. The results are of …

Modeling And Optimization Of Train Scheduling Network Based On Invulnerability Analysis, Shiming Chen, Jihai Jiang, Shaopeng Pang, Sen Nie, Yiping Lai

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

At present, the railway transport are always held up or even suspended because of the natural disasters occurred frequently. In order to guarantee the smooth operation of the railway transport and reduce the number of trains affected by the disasters as few as possible, proposal of train scheduling scheme with optimal invulnerability is proposed in this paper. Firstly, train scheduling network model is proposed based on present train scheduling scheme in China, in which the real railway station is described as a vertex, and the railway line is described as an edge, the number of trains on the railway lines …

Backward Bifurcation And Optimal Control Of A Vector Borne Disease, Abid Ali Lashari, Khalid Hattaf, Gul Zaman, Xue-Zhi Li Jan 2013

Backward Bifurcation And Optimal Control Of A Vector Borne Disease, Abid Ali Lashari, Khalid Hattaf, Gul Zaman, Xue-Zhi Li

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper deals with a simple mathematical model for the transmission dynamics of a vector-borne disease that incorporates both direct and indirect transmission. The model is analyzed using dynamical systems techniques and it reveals the backward bifurcation to occur for some range of parameters. In such cases, the reproduction number does not describe the necessary elimination effort of disease rather the effort is described by the value of the critical parameter at the turning point. The model is extended to assess the impact of some control measures, by re-formulating the model as an optimal control problem with density-dependent demographic parameters. …

On Existence-Uniqueness Of The Solution In A Nonlinear Biot’S Model, Ali Tavakoli, Massimiliano Ferronato Jan 2013

On Existence-Uniqueness Of The Solution In A Nonlinear Biot’S Model, Ali Tavakoli, Massimiliano Ferronato

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The response of elastic porous media under applied loads consists of an instantaneous deformation followed by a time dependent consolidation process associated with the drainage of the pore fluid. In the simulation of the swelling of elastic cartilagineous tissues, the permeability tensor of the porous medium depends on the strain, thus resulting in a nonlinear model. In this paper, we present a nonlinear one dimensional Biot’s model and prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution of this model. Appropriate boundary conditions required for the uniqueness of the solution are to be introduced. Then, the Galerkin method is used to …

Modeling Tools For Conformal Orthotic Devices, Steven David Riddle Jan 2013

Modeling Tools For Conformal Orthotic Devices, Steven David Riddle

Open Access Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to advance the design of conformal orthotic devices through the development of two modeling tools to address knowledge gaps in the field.

The field of human orthotics has been continually troubled by identifying successful methods of harnessing devices to the body. Past orthotics have utilized a rigid framework with minimal degrees of freedom (DOFs) driven by hard actuators attached to the body at select anchor points. Many devices design the structure and anchor points such that they reduce the degrees of freedom of a targeted joint, limiting the user's mobility and often causing the …

Improved Integrated Vegetation Management Strategies For Indiana Roadsides, Jamie Mariah Herold Jan 2013

Improved Integrated Vegetation Management Strategies For Indiana Roadsides, Jamie Mariah Herold

Open Access Theses

With over 90,000 miles of road in Indiana, it is important that adjoining vegetation be maintained for safety, road structure maintenance and aesthetics. An understanding of vegetation management tools, the disturbance they cause and the effect of that disturbance on the plant community are important when designing an integrated vegetation management (IVM) program. In this study, I examine multiple components of an IVM plan for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), including mowing regimes, selective broadleaf control, plant growth regulators and native species plantings.

The first portion of this study examines the use of herbicide and mowing at six sites …

Design And Use Of An Adjustable Clearance Flailing Knife Biomass Shredder To Mechanically Increase Particle Surface Area, Shawn Gregory Ehlers Jan 2013

Design And Use Of An Adjustable Clearance Flailing Knife Biomass Shredder To Mechanically Increase Particle Surface Area, Shawn Gregory Ehlers

Open Access Theses

A flailing knife shredder was designed and tested as an alternative to a hammermill for processing biomass. The machine was comprised of two cylinders with four rungs, each with five free-swinging blades. Each of the two cylinders had adjustable clearance hoods and variable speed drives. Energy usage, output characteristics and device capacities were compared with corn stover processed at moisture contents (MC) of 10%, 35% and 50% wet basis (WB). The hammermill produced a more uniform particle size distribution in comparison to the shredder. Accessibility, indicated by conductivity index, to plant constituents, revealed that the method of treatment was not-significant …

Detection Of Viable Microorganisms Using Propidium Monoazide, Erik J. Mcfarland, Adrian Ponce Dr. Jan 2013

Detection Of Viable Microorganisms Using Propidium Monoazide, Erik J. Mcfarland, Adrian Ponce Dr.

STAR Program Research Presentations

Propidium monoazide (PMA) is a molecular tool used to assess viability of microorganisms. Currently, PMA is thought to discern viability through membrane permeability; PMA enters only membrane compromised cells, irreversibly crosslinks to theirDNAand precipitates theDNAout of solution, preventing it from being amplified during polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Using PMA on a sample of live and dead microorganisms results in only theDNAof living organisms being amplified and identified. Therefore, a comparison ofPCRresults with and without PMA allows one to determine the live fraction and total population, respectively.

Current literature provides conflicting evidence as to the effectiveness of the technique. Our research …

Disocvering Ionic Liquid Resistant Genes, Bree Person, Douglass Higgins, Michael Thelen Jan 2013

Disocvering Ionic Liquid Resistant Genes, Bree Person, Douglass Higgins, Michael Thelen

STAR Program Research Presentations

: Plant biomass is a rich source of sugars that can be converted to biofuels by engineered microbes. However, because the lignocellulose in biomass is insoluble in aqueous conditions and recalcitrant to enzymatic degradation, thermochemical treatment is required to break apart the lignin and cellulose polymers before sugars can be released. The most effective chemicals for doing this are known as ionic liquids, which are salts that are molten at temperatures below 100° C. Although these solvents have many unique properties that are ideal for solubilizing lignocellulose, they have been found to inhibit the growth of bacterial strains used to …

Using Stable Isotope Analysis Of Zooplankton To Document Trophic And Biogeochemical Changes In The San Francisco Estuary, Steven C. Westbrook, Julien Moderan Jan 2013

Using Stable Isotope Analysis Of Zooplankton To Document Trophic And Biogeochemical Changes In The San Francisco Estuary, Steven C. Westbrook, Julien Moderan

STAR Program Research Presentations

Zooplankton represent a vital link between phytoplankton and fish, like the endangered Delta Smelt. Human interferences (nitrates from waste water, flow alteration, invasive species introduction…) have altered the structure of the San Francisco Estuary (SFE) ecosystem. We use stable isotope analysis to improve our knowledge of the planktonic food web in the SFE and gain insights into its evolution over the past decades. We use the ratios of certain isotopes (Nitrogen, Carbon, Sulfur, etc.) in different species of zooplankton to tell us what it is feeding on as well as the trophic level it feeds in. My research focused on …

Femtosecond Filament Interaction As A Probe For Molecular Alignment, Erik Mckee Jan 2013

Femtosecond Filament Interaction As A Probe For Molecular Alignment, Erik Mckee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Femtosecond laser filamentation is a highly nonlinear propagation mode. When a laser pulse propagates with a peak power exceeding a critical value Pcr (5 GW at 800 nm in air), the Kerr effect tends to collapse the beam until the intensity is high enough to ionize the medium, giving rise to plasma defocusing. A dynamic competition between these two effects takes place leaving a thin and weakly ionized plasma channel in the trail of the pulse. When an ultrafast laser pulse interacts with molecules, it will align them, spinning them about their axis of polarization. As the quantum rotational wave …
