High Sensitive C-Reactive Protein Levels In Patients With Acute Coronary Syndrome, Yildiz Hassan Tahseen Feb 2013

High Sensitive C-Reactive Protein Levels In Patients With Acute Coronary Syndrome, Yildiz Hassan Tahseen

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Patients with ischemic discomfort may present with or without STsegment elevation on the ECG. The majority of patients with ST-segment elevation ultimately develop a Q-wave AMI (QMI). Patients who present without ST-segment elevation are either experiencing unstable angina (UA) or a non-STsegment elevation MI (NSTEMI). Most patients with NSTEMI do not evolve a Q-wave and are subsequently referred to as having sustained a non-Q-wave MI (NQMI). The spectrum of clinical conditions ranging from acute myocardial infarction through minimal myocardial injury to unstable angina comprises the acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Measurement of C-reactive protein (CRP) may have practical clinical …

Women's Actions And Reactions To Male Migration: A Case Study Of Women In San Juan Guelavía, Oaxaca, Mexico, Julie Boyles

Dissertations and Theses

Using a mixed methods, interdisciplinary case study approach, this research project explores the benefits, risks, and challenges of male migration for women who reside in San Juan Guelavía, Oaxaca, Mexico. In a unique approach in the field of migration studies, this project considers not only women whose husbands have migrated--absent husbands--but also the impact of male migration on women whose husbands have returned as well as women whose husbands have never left--anchored husbands. Women with returned husbands and even women with anchored husbands feel the threat, worry, and fear that male migration could, at an unknown point in the future, …

Preliminary Data Regarding How Wheelchair Axle Position Effects The Energy Cost Of Assistants Pushing Wheelchairs Designed For Low-Resource Settings., Matthew K. Sturm, Josh Vanleer, Nathan Lowe, Karen Rispin Feb 2013

Preliminary Data Regarding How Wheelchair Axle Position Effects The Energy Cost Of Assistants Pushing Wheelchairs Designed For Low-Resource Settings., Matthew K. Sturm, Josh Vanleer, Nathan Lowe, Karen Rispin

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

A study at Letourneau University was performed to compare the energy cost of pushing wheelchairs with differing axle positions in relation to the occupant’s center of gravity (COG). In less-resourced areas of the world, powered wheelchairs are rarely feasible, requiring an assistant to push the chair. Often these assistants themselves are disabled, making any means of minimizing energy cost imperative. Research has indicated that as the rear axle comes closer to the COG, the energy cost of self-propelling the chair decreases. We hypothesized that able-bodied assistants pushing wheelchairs could provide valuable insight into the effect of axle position on energy …

Resistance Exercise During Hindlimb Unloading In Rats Mitigates Disuse-Induced Bone Loss, Michael M. Hedges Feb 2013

Resistance Exercise During Hindlimb Unloading In Rats Mitigates Disuse-Induced Bone Loss, Michael M. Hedges

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Disuse-related bone loss affects various populations of individuals including astronauts, bedridden patients, those with spinal cord injuries, and, to not as drastic a degree, the increasing population living sedentary lifestyles. The lack of mechanical stimulation on bones can lead to bone loss and an increased risk of low bone mass, osteoporosis, and fractures. Therefore, the goal of this study was to determine the effects of resistance exercise on bone during a period of disuse in skeletally mature rodents.

Male rats were placed into three different groups, hindlimb unloading, (HU), hindlimb unloading with resistance training (HU+RE), and cage control (CC), for …

Simulated Galactic Cosmic Radiation Exposure Impairs Mouse Vertebral Bone Adaptations To Exercise During Recovery From Partial Weightbearing, Katherine A. Elmer, Ramon D. Boudreaux, Corinne E. Metzger, Susan A. Bloomfield Feb 2013

Simulated Galactic Cosmic Radiation Exposure Impairs Mouse Vertebral Bone Adaptations To Exercise During Recovery From Partial Weightbearing, Katherine A. Elmer, Ramon D. Boudreaux, Corinne E. Metzger, Susan A. Bloomfield

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Partial weightbearing that simulates Lunar gravity (1/6th of Earth’s gravitational force) results in a loss of bone volume. High energy radiation like that found in galactic cosmic radiation exposure also negatively affects the skeleton. Because resistance training is the most effective exercise mode to counteract disuse-induced bone loss, this experiment combined low-dose, high-energy simulated galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) exposure, followed by a period of partial weightbearing (PWB), and then a period of resistance exercise or normal cage activity during recovery. Young adult female BALB/c mice were randomly assigned to age-matched cage controls (CC) or PWB (G/6) groups. From there, …

Gender Comparisons Of The Electromyographic Responses To Knee Extension Exercises With Different Initial Restriction Pressures, Guillermo Perez B.S., Joe Angel Lopez B.S., Murat Karabulut Ph.D, Cscs Feb 2013

Gender Comparisons Of The Electromyographic Responses To Knee Extension Exercises With Different Initial Restriction Pressures, Guillermo Perez B.S., Joe Angel Lopez B.S., Murat Karabulut Ph.D, Cscs

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The effects of blood flow restriction training (BFR) may be impacted by the several physiological and biological differences found between genders. Since the pattern of regional body composition may be different between males and females, the impact of tightness of the restrictive cuffs (initial restrictive pressure; IRP) might be different for females causing variation in the level of muscle activation; therefore research on a female population is needed to have a complete understanding of BFR. PURPOSE: To compare changes in electromyography (EMG) amplitude (RMS) and median frequency (MDF) in males and females during application of different IRPs of 40-45 mmHg …

Cost Of Rolling On Rough And Smooth Ground For Assistants Pushing The Motivation Rough Terrain And Whirlwind Roughrider Wheelchairs, Nicole Leman, Nathan Lowe, Anna G. Mcdonnel, Karen Rispin Feb 2013

Cost Of Rolling On Rough And Smooth Ground For Assistants Pushing The Motivation Rough Terrain And Whirlwind Roughrider Wheelchairs, Nicole Leman, Nathan Lowe, Anna G. Mcdonnel, Karen Rispin

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

In less-resourced settings, powered wheelchairs are rarely available for users who cannot self-propel[1]. These users must rely on somebody, usually family members or friends, for assistance to push them across variable terrain[2],[3]. In situations where people with disabilities are grouped together, assistants may themselves be disabled. Provision of mobility for the wheelchair user may be a great physiological cost for the assistant. Objective outcomes measures can provide valuable feedback to manufacturers which can constructively influence wheelchair design modification3,4. We hypothesized that measuring the energy cost for an assistant pushing two types of …

Using Curb And Figure-Eight Skills Tests To Compare Maneuverability Of The User Assistant Team In The Motivation Rough Terrain Wheelchair And The Whirlwind Roughrider Wheelchair, Emily Tutt, Anna Mcdonnel, Nicole Leman, Karen Rispin Feb 2013

Using Curb And Figure-Eight Skills Tests To Compare Maneuverability Of The User Assistant Team In The Motivation Rough Terrain Wheelchair And The Whirlwind Roughrider Wheelchair, Emily Tutt, Anna Mcdonnel, Nicole Leman, Karen Rispin

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

ABSTRACT

Some wheelchair users who cannot self-propel use powered chairs. In less-resourced settings powered chairs may not be available and users may rely on assistants to push them. In these environments, obstacles similar to curbs are common and living spaces are small1,2. Efficiency and maneuverability are two key aspects of wheelchair performance in such settings1 .Validated skills tests for measuring wheelchair performance over obstacles and in tight spaces include timed exercises involving curbs and figure-eight patterns3. We hypothesized that some chairs designed for less-resourced settings would be easier than others for assistants to push in …

The Effect Of Age And Exercise Training On Endothelial Function And Protein:Protein Interactions Among Enos And Its Regulatory Proteins In Rat Aortas, Meredith J. Luttrell, John Seawright, Christopher R. Woodman Feb 2013

The Effect Of Age And Exercise Training On Endothelial Function And Protein:Protein Interactions Among Enos And Its Regulatory Proteins In Rat Aortas, Meredith J. Luttrell, John Seawright, Christopher R. Woodman

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Previous studies indicate that nitric oxide (NO)-mediated endothelium-dependent dilation declines with age. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that impaired NO-mediated, endothelium-dependent dilation in aged arteries is due to age-related alterations in protein:protein interactions among endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and its regulatory proteins, resulting in reduced NO production in aged arteries. The regulatory proteins of interest in this study are Caveolin-1 (Cav1), an inhibitor of eNOS enzyme activity, and Heat-shock protein 90 (Hsp90), which enhances eNOS activity. METHODS: Young (2 mo) and Old (22 mo) male Fischer 344 rats were endurance exercise trained on …

Deptor Expression Correlates With Muscle Protein Synthesis, Kevin L. Shimkus, Elyse V. Wudeck, Yasaman Shirazi-Fard, Mats I. Nilsson, Nicholas P. Greene, Harry A. Hogan, James D. Fluckey

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) has long been declared a focal point of muscle protein synthesis. mTORC1 (an mTOR complex consisting of mTOR, raptor, PRAS40, and mLST8) has been associated with regulation of protein translation in muscle, altering expression and activity levels of key downstream targets S6K1 and eIF-4E-BP1. mTORC1 has been shown to be affected by various stimuli, including nutritional status, growth factors, and mechanical loading. But in past incidents we have found disconnects in muscle protein synthesis and mTOR signaling, stimulating discussions that mTOR content and activation alone may not be able to fully account for muscle protein …

Transiently Silencing Genes Associated With Voluntary Physical Activity Using Intravenous Injection Of Vivo‐Morpholinos, David P. Ferguson, Emily E. Schmidt, Dr.Timothy Lightfoot

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Physical inactivity has been associated with several diseases and conditions with multiple candidate genes proposed to regulate voluntary physical activity. However, there has not been a reliable method to silence candidate genes in vivo to determine causal mechanisms of physical activity regulation. The novel molecular biology tool, Vivo‐morpholinos, is a potential method to transiently silence specific genes. Thus, the aim of this study was to validate the use of Vivo‐morpholinos in a mouse model for voluntary physical activity with several sub‐objectives. We observed that Vivomorpholinos achieved between 60 – 97% knockdown of Drd1‐, Vmat2‐, and Glut4‐protein in skeletal muscle, the …

Robust Control Of A Spatially Distributed Commercial Fishery, William A. Brock, Anastasios Xepapadeas, Athanasios. N. Yannacopoulos Feb 2013

Robust Control Of A Spatially Distributed Commercial Fishery, William A. Brock, Anastasios Xepapadeas, Athanasios. N. Yannacopoulos

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We consider a robust control model for a spatially distributed commercial fishery under uncertainty, and in particular a tracking problem, i.e. the problem of robust stabilization of a chosen deterministic benchmark state in the presence of model uncertainty. The problem is expressed in the form of a stochastic linear quadratic robust optimal control problem, which is solved analytically. We focus on the emergence of breakdown from the robust stabilization policy, called hot spots, and comment upon their significance concerning the spatiotemporal behaviour of the system.

Improving Outcomes In Advanced Lung Cancer : Maintenance Therapy In Non-Small-Cell Lung Carcinoma, Muhammad Furrukh, Ikram A. Burney, Shiyam Zahid, Khwaja F., Mansour Al-Moundhri

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Systemic chemotherapy has remained the traditional treatment for metastatic non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC), enhancing survival rate at 1 year to 29%. The median survival had plateaued at around 10 months until early 2008, and in an attempt to enhance survival in advanced disease, maintenance chemotherapy trials were initiated which had recently demonstrated prolongation of survival by an additional 2–3 months in patients who had performance status (PS) 0–1 and well-preserved organ functions. Suitable patients with any degree of clinical benefit are treated with 4–6 cycles, and then one of the active agents is continued until best response, or toxicity (continued …

High-Resolution Dynamic Atomic Force Microscopy In Liquids With Different Feedback Architectures, John Melcher, David Martinez-Martin, Miriam Jaafar, Julio Gomez-Herrero, Arvind Raman Feb 2013

High-Resolution Dynamic Atomic Force Microscopy In Liquids With Different Feedback Architectures, John Melcher, David Martinez-Martin, Miriam Jaafar, Julio Gomez-Herrero, Arvind Raman

Birck and NCN Publications

The recent achievement of atomic resolution with dynamic atomic force microscopy (dAFM) [Fukuma et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 2005, 87, 034101], where quality factors of the oscillating probe are inherently low, challenges some accepted beliefs concerning sensitivity and resolution in dAFM imaging modes. Through analysis and experiment we study the performance metrics for high-resolution imaging with dAFM in liquid media with amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM) and drive-amplitude modulation (DAM) imaging modes. We find that while the quality factors of dAFM probes may deviate by several orders of magnitude between vacuum and liquid media, their sensitivity to tip-sample forces …

Student Use Of Library Research Guides Following Library Instruction, Mardi Mahaffy Feb 2013

Student Use Of Library Research Guides Following Library Instruction, Mardi Mahaffy

Communications in Information Literacy

Librarians often provide students who attend one-shot library instruction sessions with research guides they can refer to once class is over. These guides, whether in paper or electronic form, serve to remind the students of key points and resources addressed during the session. It is unclear, though, if and how students refer to these guides once leaving the classroom. This article reports on the results of two focus groups made up of students who attended a basic library instruction session as part of a survey art course. The students shared how they used a paper and electronic research guide, delivered …
