A large fraction of engineered nanomaterials in consumer and commercial products will reach natural ecosystems. To date, research on the biological impacts of environmental nanomaterial exposures has largely focused on high-concentration exposures in mechanistic lab studies with single strains of model organisms. These results are difficult to extrapolate to ecosystems, where exposures will likely be at low-concentrations and which are inhabited by a diversity of organisms. Here we show adverse responses of plants and microorganisms in a replicated long-term terrestrial mesocosm field experiment following a single low dose of silver nanoparticles (0.14 mg Ag kg−1 soil) applied via a …

The bioassay-guided purification of Zanthoxylum paracanthum (Rutaceae) extracts led to the isolation of three new alkaloids, namely 1-hydroxy-10-methoxy-7H-dibenzo[de,g]quinolin-7-one (zanthoxoaporphine A, 2), 1-hydroxy-7H-dibenzo[de,g]quinolin- 7-one (zanthoxoaporphine B, 3) and 1,8-dihydroxy-9-methoxy-7H-dibenzo[de,g]quinolin-7-one (zanthoxaporphine C, 4), and a known lignan identified as sesamin (1). Isolation and purification of the constituent compounds was achieved through conventional chromatographic methods. The chemical structures of the isolated compounds were determined on the basis of UV, IR, NMR and MS data, and confirmed by comparison with those reported in the literature. The larvicidal activity of some of the isolated compounds was investigated by using third-instar Anopheles gambiae larvae. © 2013 …

While carbon capture and storage (CCS) is increasingly recognised as technologically possible, recent evidence from deep-sea CCS activities suggests that leakage from reservoirs may result in highly CO2 impacted biological communities. In contrast, shallow marine waters have higher primary productivity which may partially mitigate this leakage. We used natural CO2 seeps in shallow marine waters to assess if increased benthic primary productivity could capture and store CO2 leakage in areas targeted for CCS. We found that the productivity of seagrass communities (in situ, using natural CO2 seeps) and two individual species (ex situ, Cymodocea serrulata and Halophila ovalis) increased with …

Quantifying The Nonlinear, Anisotropic Material Response Of Spinal Ligaments, Daniel J. Robertson
Quantifying The Nonlinear, Anisotropic Material Response Of Spinal Ligaments, Daniel J. Robertson
Theses and Dissertations
Spinal ligaments may be a significant source of chronic back pain, yet they are often disregarded by the clinical community due to a lack of information with regards to their material response, and innervation characteristics. The purpose of this dissertation was to characterize the material response of spinal ligaments and to review their innervation characteristics.
Review of relevant literature revealed that all of the major spinal ligaments are innervated. They cause painful sensations when irritated and provide reflexive control of the deep spinal musculature. As such, including the neurologic implications of iatrogenic ligament damage in the evaluation of surgical procedures …

Information Evaluation Instruction: A Three Term Project With A First Year Experience Course, Steve Borrelli, Corey M. Johnson
Communications in Information Literacy
In response to the recognition that work world success is dependent on locating and effectively utilizing information, the academy has acknowledged the need to produce information literate graduates. There needs to be more focus on how to develop the most effective collaborative programs with teaching faculty and benchmark the progress toward research skill mastery. This paper outlines a multiple term collaborative effort targeting student evaluation skill development. Librarians taught hybrid (mostly online with some in-person interaction) lessons to groups of lower undergraduates enrolled in a first year experience seminar. A pre-test/post-test assessment package revealed that students' strongest area of proficiency …

The proteasome inhibitor bortezomib (Velcade) is prescribed for the treatment of multiple myeloma. Clinically achievable concentrations of bortezomib cause less than 85% inhibition of the chymotrypsin-like activity of the proteasome, but little attention has been paid as to whether in vitro studies are representative of this level of inhibition. Patients receive bortezomib as an intravenous or subcutaneous bolus injection, resulting in maximum proteasome inhibition within one hour followed by a gradual recovery of activity. In contrast, most in vitro studies use continuous treatment so that activity never recovers. Replacing continuous treatment with 1 h-pulse treatment increases differences in sensitivity in …

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystem autoimmune disease. Involvement of the nervous system, either primary or secondary, is common in SLE, and 19 different neuropsychiatric clinical syndromes have been recognised in association with the disease. Several pathophysiological mechanisms have been implicated in the pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric SLE (NPSLE), including vasculopathy, autoantibodies, and cytokine-mediated tissue injury. Careful evaluation of the patient is required to rule out secondary causes before attributing the neurological symptoms to SLE. Treatment depends on the nature and severity of NPSLE syndrome.

Divergent Views On Abortion And The Period Of Ensoulment, Badawy Ab Khitamy
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
A Muslim woman in her sixteenth week of pregnancy was informed that her ultrasound scan showed spina bifida, and laboratory results confirmed the diagnosis. The child would have various complications and, most probably, would need medical care for life. With the consent of her husband she decided to terminate the pregnancy. Her decision sparked controversy among Muslim clerics in her community, sparking debate between those who would allow abortion for medical reasons and those who oppose abortion for any reason. This paper will review the philosophical and theological arguments of the pro-life and pro-choice groups as well as the Islamic …

Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop and validate a comparative genomic hybridisation (CGH) array that would allow simultaneous targeted analysis of a panel of disease genes and low resolution whole genome analysis. Methods: A bespoke Roche NimbleGen 12x135K CGH array (Roche NimbleGen Inc., Madison, Wisconsin, USA) was designed to interrogate the coding regions of 66 genes of interest, with additional widelyspaced backbone probes providing coverage across the whole genome. We analysed genomic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from 20 patients with a range of previously characterised copy number changes and from 8 patients who had not previously undergone any …

Molecular Analysis Of A Case Of Thanatophoric Dysplasia Reveals Two De Novo Fgfr3 Missense Mutations Located In Cis, Renate Marquis-Nicholson, Salim Aftimos, Donald R.
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: Thanatophoric dysplasia (TD) is the most common form of lethal skeletal dysplasia. It is primarily an autosomal dominant disorder and is characterised by macrocephaly, a narrow thorax, short ribs, brachydactyly, and hypotonia. In addition to these core phenotypic features, TD type I involves micromelia with bowed femurs, while TD type II is characterised by micromelia with straight femurs and a moderate to severe clover-leaf deformity of the skull. Mutations in the FGFR3 gene are responsible for all cases of TD reported to date. The objective of the study here was to delineate further the mutational spectrum responsible for TD. …

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Inhibitors that target key enzymes involved in epigenetic alterations, particularly histone deacetylases (HDACs), are garnering interest in cancer research because of their unique ability to reversibly induce terminal differentiation of transformed cells by influencing chromatin structure. Through an in-house collaborative effort, derivatives of hinokitiol, a troplone-related non-benzenoid aromatic compound, are being synthesized and characterized by the Wright and Anderson laboratories as HDAC inhibitors (HDACi). Given the novelty of these tropolones as antineoplastic agents, a number of biochemical and functional studies were conducted in order to develop tropolones as …

Umbilical endometriosis is an important differential diagnosis of any umbilical lesion. A 35-yearold type 2 diabetic woman presented with intermittent umbilical discharge which failed to respond to various antibiotics. An ultrasound scan and MRI scan failed to show any obvious abnormality. The umbilicus was excised and histology confirmed endometriosis. Surgical excision provides a definitive diagnosis and curative treatment for isolated endometriosis.

Marine Ecosystem Response To The Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, M Edwards, G Beaugrand, P Helaouët, J Alheit, S Coombs
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Against the backdrop of warming of the Northern Hemisphere it has recently been acknowledged that North Atlantic temperature changes undergo considerable variability over multidecadal periods. The leading component of natural low-frequency temperature variability has been termed the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). Presently, correlative studies on the biological impact of the AMO on marine ecosystems over the duration of a whole AMO cycle (∼60 years) is largely unknown due to the rarity of continuously sustained biological observations at the same time period. To test whether there is multidecadal cyclic behaviour in biological time-series in the North Atlantic we used one of …

Monitoring Mdpc-23 Odontoblast-Like Cell Proliferation Using Cell Count And Dna Content Methods, Marina Funtik D.M.D.
Master's Theses
There is growing interest in the development of an engineering process by which dentin stem/progenitor cells can predictably proliferate, differentiate and produce mineralization nodules in cell culture. The engineering of 3D scaffolds could then be used to aid in proliferation and differentiation of these progenitor cells to aid in regeneration of the pulp/dentin complex in vivo.
In the present study, the goal was to characterize the MDPC-23 cell line and its behavior during proliferation. The cells in culture reach high numbers upon reaching confluence. When cells are growing in multilayers, as will occur in planned dentin regeneration experiments, it …
The Future Of Legal Education Reform, James E. Moliterno
The Future Of Legal Education Reform, James E. Moliterno
Pepperdine Law Review
As a historical matter, the legal profession obstinately resists change. Its ponderous, backward-looking and self-preservationist characteristics are embodied in the ABA's Ethics 20/20 Commission, which endeavors to protect, preserve, and maintain. But the profession suffers from such thinking. It must look forward; grow more attuned to outside events and trends; and become a player in how change is assimilated into established ways, and how established ways are replaced by more effective ones. Law schools require reform. The academic focus bears little relation to the reality of practice. Graduates must better able to contribute to clients of law firms and to …
