Combination And Applications Of Time-Resolved Surface Plasmon Resonance Spectroscopy And Electrochemical Methods, Yu Bao, Yan Mao, Wei Wang, Zheng-Gang Li, Li Niu
Journal of Electrochemistry
Electrochemical-surface plasmon resonance (EC-SPR) technique, developed in recent years, is a new technology which combines time-resolved surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy and electrochemical methods. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is a physical phenomenon generated by optical coupling using a metallic thin film and is very sensitive to optical analysis. The principles of SPR and EC-SPR are briefly introduced and the applications of the combination of SPR spectroscopy with electrochemical techniques are reviewed in this paper. This new technology has been widely used in such research areas as reaction dynamics, biochemical sensors, electrode/electrolyte interfaces, kinetic parameters and bimolecular interactions.

“Subaltern” Remembrances: Mapping Affective Approaches To Partition Memory, Jacque Micieli-Voutsinas
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
Theorizing affect in relationship to interdisciplinary developments among geographies of memory and subaltern studies, this essay engages the visual art of feminist artist, Pritika Chowdhry, in her latest exhibition, Remembering the Crooked Line, in order to understand the migratory nature of cultural memories as a result of global flows. Situating Chowdhry’s aesthetic contributions alongside the work of postcolonial, feminist scholar, Gayatri Spivak in “Can the Subaltern Speak?,” this essay offers a framework for understanding memory production beyond spatially-fixed and geographically bound points of reference, and theorizes how memories are produced across seemingly disparate spaces and geopolitical histories. Thus, corralling multiple …

Under a variety of stress conditions, Photosystem II produces reactive oxygen species on both the reducing and oxidizing sides of the photosystem. A number of different sites including the Mn4O5Ca cluster, P680, PheoD1, QA, QB and cytochrome b559 have been hypothesized to produce reactive oxygen species in the photosystem. In this communication using Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry we have identified several residues on the D1 and D2 proteins from spinach which are oxidatively modified and in close proximity to QA (D1 residues 239F, 241Q, 242E and the D2 residues 238P, 239T, 242E and 247M) and PheoD1 (D1 residues …

Simultaneous Measurement Of Deep Tissue Blood Flow And Oxygenation Using Noncontact Diffuse Correlation Spectroscopy Flow-Oximeter, Ting Li, Yu Lin, Yu Shang, Lian He, Chong Huang, Margaret M. Szabunio, Guoqiang Yu
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
We report a novel noncontact diffuse correlation spectroscopy flow-oximeter for simultaneous quantification of relative changes in tissue blood flow (rBF) and oxygenation (Δ[oxygenation]). The noncontact probe was compared against a contact probe in tissue-like phantoms and forearm muscles (n = 10), and the dynamic trends in both rBF and Δ[oxygenation] were found to be highly correlated. However, the magnitudes of Δ[oxygenation] measured by the two probes were significantly different. Monte Carlo simulations and phantom experiments revealed that the arm curvature resulted in a significant underestimation (~-20%) for the noncontact measurements in Δ[ …

Dartmouth Scholarship
During reproductive life, the mammary epithelium undergoes consecutive cycles of proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. Doing so relies on the retained proliferative capacity, prolonged lifespan and developmental potency of mammary stem cells (MaSCs). ΔNp63α, the predominant TP63 isoform in mammary epithelia, is robustly expressed in MaSCs and is required for preservation of self-renewing capacity in diverse epithelial structures. However, the mechanism(s) underlying subversion of this activity during forfeiture of self-renewing capacity are poorly understood. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) govern critical cellular functions including stem cell maintenance, development, cell cycle regulation and differentiation by disrupting translation of target mRNAs. Data presented here …

Effect Of Ti/Pbo2 Electrodes Doped With Different Elements On Electrocatalytic Oxidation Characteristics Of Phenol, Xiao-Lei Liu, Yuan-Yuan Dan, Hai-Yan Lu, Hai-Bo Lin, Ming-Li Ouyang, Chuan-Jun Yun
Journal of Electrochemistry
Three types of electrodes, namely, Ti/PbO2, F-doped PbO2 (Ti/PbO2-F) and nano-Co3O4-doped PbO2 (Ti/PbO2+Nano-Co3O4) electrodes, were prepared by electro-deposition method on the Ti substrate with the interlayer of SnO2-Sb2O5. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to study the compositions, structures and film morphologies of the electrodes. Electrocatalytic oxidation characteristics to phenol on the prepared electrodes were investigated by electrochemical method. The experimental results showed that compared with the Ti/PbO2 electrode, the potentials of oxygen …

A Dft Calculation Screening Of Pt-Based Bimetallic Catalysts For Oxygen Reduction, Li-Hui Ou, Sheng-Li Chen
Journal of Electrochemistry
Developing Pt-lean catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the key for large-scale application of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). In this paper, we have proposed a multiple-descriptor strategy for screening efficient and durable ORR alloy catalysts of low Pt content. We argue that an ideal Pt-based bimetallic alloy catalyst for ORR should possess simultaneously negative alloy formation energy, negative surface segregation energy of Pt and a lower oxygen binding ability than pure Pt. By performing detailed DFT calculations on the thermodynamics, surface chemistry and electronic properties of various Pt-M alloys (M refers to non-precious transition metals in the …

The fungal family Clavicipitaceae includes plant symbionts and parasites that produce several psychoactive and bioprotective alkaloids. The family includes grass symbionts in the epichloae clade (Epichloë and Neotyphodium species), which are extraordinarily diverse both in their host interactions and in their alkaloid profiles. Epichloae produce alkaloids of four distinct classes, all of which deter insects, and some-including the infamous ergot alkaloids-have potent effects on mammals. The exceptional chemotypic diversity of the epichloae may relate to their broad range of host interactions, whereby some are pathogenic and contagious, others are mutualistic and vertically transmitted (seed-borne), and still others vary in pathogenic …

Background: Infection of humans with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) results in latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in 90-95% of immune competent individuals, with no symptoms of active disease. The World Health Organization estimates that 1.5 billion people have LTBI, which can reactivate in the setting of waning host immunity, posing a threat to global TB control. Various animal models have been used to study the pathogenesis of TB. However, besides nonhuman primates, rabbits are the only animal model that fully recapitulates the pathological features of human TB, including progressive disease with necrosis and cavitation or establishment of spontaneous latency.

Mechanisms Of Protective Activity Of West Nile Virus Anti-Envelope Antibodies In Vitro And In Vivo, Matthew Raymond Vogt
Mechanisms Of Protective Activity Of West Nile Virus Anti-Envelope Antibodies In Vitro And In Vivo, Matthew Raymond Vogt
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
West Nile virus: WNV) is a neurotropic flavivirus capable of causing severe disease and death in humans. Studies in mice have demonstrated that the humoral immune response against WNV limits primary infection and protects against a secondary challenge. Accordingly, passive transfer of immune serum or monoclonal antibodies: MAb) against the envelope: E) protein either prior to WNV infection or shortly thereafter is sufficient to protect mice from disease. The E protein is an immunodominant antigen in the antibody response to WNV infection, and the most potent neutralizing MAbs recognize an epitope on the lateral ridge of domain III: DIII-LR) of …

Background
Many Automatic Function Prediction (AFP) methods were developed to cope with an increasing growth of the number of gene sequences that are available from high throughput sequencing experiments. To support the development of AFP methods, it is essential to have community wide experiments for evaluating performance of existing AFP methods. Critical Assessment of Function Annotation (CAFA) is one such community experiment. The meeting of CAFA was held as a Special Interest Group (SIG) meeting at the Intelligent Systems in Molecular Biology (ISMB) conference in 2011. Here, we perform a detailed analysis of two sequence-based function prediction methods, PFP and …

Will Fda Data Exclusivity Make Biologic Patents Passé?, Vincent J. Roth
Will Fda Data Exclusivity Make Biologic Patents Passé?, Vincent J. Roth
Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal
Much controversy has ensued over the current twelve-year data exclusivity period afforded to biosimilars, pursuant to the Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act of 2009 (BPCI).
Many commentators speculate whether data exclusivity will overtake patents as the preferred method of intellectual property protection for new biologic drugs. A comparison of data exclusivity with the patent system, however, reveals few similarities and many differences. Moreover, legislative gaps and absent industry mechanisms leave a void that is a barrier to entry in the biosimilars market, referred to here as “regulatory impracticality.”
A survey was conducted with senior management at biopharma companies regarding …
