Matriarchy, The Colonial Situation, And The Women's War Of 1929 In Southeastern Nigeria, Samantha Mallory Kies Mar 2013

Matriarchy, The Colonial Situation, And The Women's War Of 1929 In Southeastern Nigeria, Samantha Mallory Kies

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines the Igbo women of Southeastern Nigeria from the eve of colonial intrusion to the imposition of colonialism, the Women’s War of 1929, and its aftermath. By placing the Women’s War into the context of the stripping away of inherent rights guaranteed them by matriarchy following the imposition of patriarchy upon the society, this study provides a new explanation of the women’s involvement and lack of male participation in the war. Under traditional matriarchal umbrellas, through their networks and social groups and by the banding together of all women, the Igbo Women’s War of 1929 was the beginning …

American Burying Beetle (Nicrophorus Americanus): Species Conservation Assessment, Melissa J. Panella Mar 2013

American Burying Beetle (Nicrophorus Americanus): Species Conservation Assessment, Melissa J. Panella

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

The primary goal in development of at-risk species conservation assessments is to compile biological and ecological information that may assist conservation practitioners in making decisions regarding the conservation of species of interest. The Nebraska Natural Legacy Project recognizes the American Burying Beetle (Nicrophorus americanus) as a Tier I at-risk species of high conservation priority. Indeed, the American Burying Beetle (ABB) is a species of conservation need throughout its range. Here, I provide some general management recommendations regarding ABB; however, conservation practitioners will need to use professional judgment for specific management decisions based on objectives, location, and site-specific conditions. This resource …

Entrepreneurship Faculty Research

The use of online learning at the primary and secondary school level is growing exponentially in the United States. Much of this growth is with full-time online schools, most of which are operated by for-profit companies that use proprietary online course content. In this article we trace the development of, and philosophy behind, a full-time online school that uses open access software and open educational resources for course content. As more nations begin to put in place plans for primary and secondary education in the event of natural disasters (e.g., the Christchurch earthquakes) or pandemics (e.g., avian flu or H1N1), …

A Study Of Sharing And Reciprocity In Grey Parrots (Psittacus Erithacus), Franck Péron, Maria John, Stephanie Sapowicz, Dalila Bovet, Irene M. Pepperberg Mar 2013

A Study Of Sharing And Reciprocity In Grey Parrots (Psittacus Erithacus), Franck Péron, Maria John, Stephanie Sapowicz, Dalila Bovet, Irene M. Pepperberg

Sentience Collection

Demonstrations of nonhuman ability to share resources and reciprocate such sharing seem contingent upon the experimental paradigm used (note Horner et al. in PNAS 108:13847–13851, 2011). Here, such behaviour in Grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus) was tested in two experiments, both designed to avoid possible issues involving apparatus complexity, visible reward options, and physical competition and/or limited communication between subjects. In both studies, two birds, working in dyads, took turns in choosing one of four different coloured cups with differing outcomes: empty (null, nonrewarding), selfish (keeping reward for oneself), share (sharing a divisible reward), or giving (donating reward to other). In …

Survey Of Suitable Plants For Cal Poly's Green Wall, Katrina Burritt Mar 2013

Survey Of Suitable Plants For Cal Poly's Green Wall, Katrina Burritt

Horticulture and Crop Science

Green wall technology is a growing industry in the United States and has been very successful for a several years throughout Europe. The objective of this survey was to study the success of several different species of plants on a vertical wall facing south at Cal Poly’s Horticultural Department Unit. At first the focus was aimed at using California native species, because it was thought that natives would be better acclimated to the exposure in this specific location. It became apparent that plants should not be selected for the wall based just on the fact that they are California natives. …

A Closer Look At The Breeding Season Of The Kangaroo Rat Dipodomys Heermanni, Brianna R. Lavelle Mar 2013

A Closer Look At The Breeding Season Of The Kangaroo Rat Dipodomys Heermanni, Brianna R. Lavelle

Biological Sciences

The breeding season of kangaroo rats has not been a widely studied topic, and therefore is not very well known. Dipodomys heermanni is the species of interest for this study and is thought to breed from February to October (Kelt, 1988). The purpose of this study is to take this broad time period and narrow it down to prime breeding activity months. I hypothesized the prime breeding season of Dipodomys heermanni arenae to be between March and June. Mark-recapture methods were applied to the kangaroo rats at our study site in the Guadalupe Nipomo Dunes National Wildlife Refuge during the …

Marine Protected Areas And Resilience To Sedimentation In The Solomon Islands, B. S. Halpern, K. A. Selkoe, Crow White, S. Albert, S. Aswani, M. Lauer Mar 2013

Marine Protected Areas And Resilience To Sedimentation In The Solomon Islands, B. S. Halpern, K. A. Selkoe, Crow White, S. Albert, S. Aswani, M. Lauer

Biological Sciences

The ability of marine protected areas (MPAs) to provide protection from indirect stressors, via increased resilience afforded by decreased impact from direct stressors, remains an important and unresolved question about the role MPAs can play in broader conservation and resource management goals. Over a five-year period, we evaluated coral and fish community responses inside and outside three MPAs within the Roviana Lagoon system in Solomon Islands, where sedimentation pressure from upland logging is substantial. We found little evidence that MPAs decrease impact or improve conditions and instead found some potential declines in fish abundance. We also documented modest to high …

Composted Almond Waste Blended With Commercial Fertilizers Feasibility, Jordan Jay Marchy Mar 2013

Composted Almond Waste Blended With Commercial Fertilizers Feasibility, Jordan Jay Marchy

Agribusiness

Composting is becoming more and more pressured into today’s agricultural industry. With this comes a business idea that has the potential to be economically viable. This business consists of taking the waste produced from almond hullers in the Central Valley, which consists of foliage, dirt, and twigs, composting it, mixing it with some sort of synthetic fertilizer to create a blend, and selling the product to farmers in the area. The problem is that agriculturalists don’t know for sure if it can be profitable. This study takes a closer look at the costs and revenues associated with such a business …

The Effect Of Inbreeding In Dairy Cattle: Effects Of Genomic Versus Non-Genomic Predictions, Michelle Gabrielle Khal

Dairy Science

The objective of this project was to examine the relationship between the genomic value inbreeding coefficient and the pedigree value inbreeding coefficient. Hair samples were collected from 50 registered Holstein heifers from Airosa Dairy Tipton, California. The 50 hair samples were sent to Pfizer Animal Genetics for the genomic inbreeding values. DNA was extracted from the hair sample and ran through a low-density DNA SNP marker. Two values were computed from the genomic test; the future inbreeding value and the individual inbreeding value. The registered identification numbers of each of the heifers was also sent to the United States Holstein …

Status Of 10 Bird Species Of Conservation Concern In Us Fish & Wildlife Service Region 6, Christopher J. Butler, Jeffrey B. Tibbits, Katrina Hucks Mar 2013

Status Of 10 Bird Species Of Conservation Concern In Us Fish & Wildlife Service Region 6, Christopher J. Butler, Jeffrey B. Tibbits, Katrina Hucks

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

All native migratory birds in the United States and Canada are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) of 1918 (16 U.S.C. §§ 703 – 712). Three additional countries have signed this act, including Mexico (1936), Japan, and Russia (1976). Although these avian species are protected, permits for direct take can be issued for activities such as depredation, salvage and scientific collection (USFWS 2012a). However the USFWS currently lacks the ability to assess the potential consequences of these increases on the vast majority of birds protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Consequently, there is an urgent need to …

Comparison Of Forest Attributes Derived From Two Terrestrial Lidar Systems., Mark J. Ducey, Rasmus Astrup, Stefan Seifart, Hans Pretzsch, Bruce C. Larson, K David Coates

Natural Resources & the Environment

Terrestrial lidar (TLS) is an emerging technology for deriving forest attributes, including conventional inventory and canopy characterizations. However, little is known about the influence of scanner specifications on derived forest parameters. We compared two TLS systems at two sites in British Columbia. Common scanning benchmarks and identical algorithms were used to obtain estimates of tree diameter, position, and canopy characteristics. Visualization of range images and point clouds showed clear differences, even though both scanners were relatively high-resolution instruments. These translated into quantifiable differences in impulse penetration, characterization of stems and crowns far from the scan location, and gap fraction. Differences …

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Pathogens target important components of host immunity to cause disease. The Pseudomonas syringae type III-secreted effector HopU1 is a mono-ADP-ribosyltransferase required for full virulence on Arabidopsis thaliana. HopU1 targets several RNA-binding proteins including GRP7, whose role in immunity is still unclear. Here, we show that GRP7 associates with translational components, as well as with the pattern recognition receptors FLS2 and EFR. Moreover, GRP7 binds specifically FLS2 and EFR transcripts in vivo through its RNA recognition motif. HopU1 does not affect the protein–protein associations between GRP7, FLS2 and translational components. Instead, HopU1 blocks the interaction between GRP7 and FLS2 and …

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Small RNAs (sRNAs; approximately 20 to 30 nucleotides in length) play important roles in gene regulation as well as in defense responses against transposons and viruses in eukaryotes. Their biogenesis and modes of action have attracted great attention in recent years. However, many aspects of sRNA function, such as the mechanism(s) of translation repression at postinitiation steps, remain poorly characterized. In the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, sRNAs derived from genomeintegrated inverted repeat transgenes, perfectly complementary to the 39 untranslated region of a target transcript, can inhibit protein synthesis without or with only minimal mRNA destabilization. Here, we report …

Fisheries Research Report No. 242 - Biology, Stock Status And Management Summaries For Selected Fish Species In South-Western Australia, Claire B. Smallwood

Fisheries Research Reports

ObjectiveMany people are interested in fishes, but often it can be difficult to access reliable information on the biology, status and management of a particular fish species. Although there is a long history of world class fisheries research and management in Australia, the full details are generally only available in a fragmented manner in various scientific journals, books and reports. In some cases, these sources of information can be difficult to find and, even for fisheries researchers and managers, who usually have access to scientific journals, certain types of information such as unpublished reports or student theses, can be hard …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Genome rearrangements are associated with eukaryotic evolutionary processes ranging from tumorigenesis to speciation. Rearrangements are especially common following interspecific hybridization, and some of these could be expected to have strong selective value. To test this expectation we created de novo interspecific yeast hybrids between two diverged but largely syntenic Saccharomyces species, S. cerevisiae and S. uvarum, then experimentally evolved them under continuous ammonium limitation. We discovered that a characteristic interspecific genome rearrangement arose multiple times in independently evolved populations. We uncovered nine different breakpoints, all occurring in a narrow similar to 1-kb region of chromosome 14, and all producing an …

Volatile profiles yielded from gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis provide abundant information not only for metabolism-related research, but also for chemotaxonomy. To study the chemotaxonomy of Mangshanyegan, its volatile profiles of fruit and leaf and those of 29 other genotypes of Citrus, Poncirus, and Fortunella were subjected to phylogenetic analyses. Results showed that 145 identified (including 64 tentatively identified) and 15 unidentified volatile compounds were detected from their peel oils. The phylogenetic analysis of peel oils based on hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) demonstrated a good agreement with the Swingle taxonomy system, in which the three genera of Citrus, Poncirus, and …

Molecular Imaging To Target Transplanted Muscle Progenitor Cells, Kelly Gutpell, Rebecca Mcgirr, Lisa Hoffman Mar 2013

Molecular Imaging To Target Transplanted Muscle Progenitor Cells, Kelly Gutpell, Rebecca Mcgirr, Lisa Hoffman

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe genetic neuromuscular disorder that affects 1 in 3,500 boys, and is characterized by progressive muscle degeneration(1, 2). In patients, the ability of resident muscle satellite cells (SCs) to regenerate damaged myofibers becomes increasingly inefficient(4). Therefore, transplantation of muscle progenitor cells (MPCs)/myoblasts from healthy subjects is a promising therapeutic approach to DMD. A major limitation to the use of stem cell therapy, however, is a lack of reliable imaging technologies for long-term monitoring of implanted cells, and for evaluating its effectiveness. Here, we describe a non-invasive, real-time approach to evaluate the success of myoblast …

Phosphorylation Of Igfbp-1 At Discrete Sites Elicits Variable Effects On Igf-I Receptor Autophosphorylation, Majida Abu Shehab, Cristiana Iosef, Robert Wildgruber, Girish Sardana, Madhulika B. Gupta

Paediatrics Publications

Wepreviously demonstrated that hypoxia and leucine deprivation cause hyperphosphorylation of IGF-binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1) at discrete sites that markedly enhanced IGF-I affinityandinhibited IGF-I-stimulated cell growth. In this study we investigated the functional role of these phosphorylation sites using mutagenesis. We created three IGFBP-1 mutants in which individual serine (S119/S169/S98) residues were substituted with alanine and S101A was recreated for comparison. The wild-type (WT) and mutant IGFBP-1 were expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells and IGFBP-1 in cell media was isolated using isoelectric-focusing-free-flow electrophoresis. BIACore analysis indicated that the changes in IGF-I affinity for S98A and S169A were moderate, whereas S119A greatly …
