Sex, a biological variable, and gender, a cultural variable, define the individual and affect all aspects of disease prevention, development, diagnosis, progression, and treatment. Sex and gender are essential elements of individualized medicine. However, medical education rarely considers such topics beyond the physiology of reproduction. To reduce health care disparities and to provide optimal, cost-effective medical care for individuals, concepts of sex and gender health need to become embedded into education and training of health professionals. In September 2012, Mayo Clinic hosted a 2-day workshop bringing together leading experts from 13 U.S. schools of medicine and schools of public health, …

Research Of Individual Neural Network Generation And Ensemble Algorithm Based On Quotient Space Granularity Clustering, Li Hui, Ding Shifei
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The aim of this paper is to develop an individual neural network generation and ensemble algorithm based on quotient space granularity clustering. Firstly, we give the characteristics of the quotient space granularity and affinity propagation(AP) clustering. Secondly, we introduce the quotient space concept to the AP clustering analysis, which can find an optimal granularity from all possible granularities. Then using improved AP clustering algorithm to seek optimal results of sample clustering and using different individual neural network to learn different categories of samples so that the degree of difference between networks and the generalization ability of neural network ensemble(NNE) can …

A Novel Discrete Cuckoo Search Algorithm For Spherical Traveling Salesman Problem, Xinxin Ouyang, Yongquan Zhou, Qifang Luo, Huan Chen
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, we propose a novel discrete cuckoo search algorithm (DCS) for solving spherical Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) where all points are on the surface of a sphere. The algorithm is based on the L´evy flight behaviour and brood parasitic behaviour. The proposed algorithm applies study operator, the ”A” operator, and 3-opt operator to solutions in the bulletin board to speed up the convergence. Optimization results obtained for HA30 (an instance from TSPLIB) and different size problems are solved. Compared with GA, DCS is better and faster.

Epigenetic modifications in eukaryotic genomes occur primarily in the form of 5-methylcytosine (5 mC). These modifications are heavily involved in transcriptional repression, gene regulation, development and the progression of diseases including cancer. We report a new single-molecule assay for the detection of DNA methylation using solid-state nanopores. Methylation is detected by selectively labeling methylation sites with MBD1 (MBD-1x) proteins, the complex inducing a 3 fold increase in ionic blockage current relative to unmethylated DNA. Furthermore, the discrimination of methylated and unmethylated DNA is demonstrated in the presence of only a single bound protein, thereby giving a resolution of a single …

Migrating Successful Student Engagement Strategies Online: Opportunities And Challenges Using Jigsaw Groups And Problem-Based Learning, José A. Amador, Helen Mederer
Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications
Online courses may be criticized for failing to engage students. Faculty members teaching in the classroom often employ a number of strategies that capture the interest of students, but may find the migration to the online environment a daunting prospect. This paper describes the transitioning of two common strategies to engage students in the classroom – jigsaw groups and problem-based learning – from face-to-face to online courses in sociology and soil science, respectively. The paper discusses the challenges and opportunities that were found to be common to the implementation of both these strategies online, and provides suggestions for faculty considering …

Deep Water Offshore Oil Exploration Regulation: The Need For A Global Environmental Regulation Regime, Naama Hasson
Deep Water Offshore Oil Exploration Regulation: The Need For A Global Environmental Regulation Regime, Naama Hasson
Washington and Lee Journal of Energy, Climate, and the Environment
Government regulation of deepwater offshore explorations has found it either difficult to evaluate the environmental impact, or too costly to perform the required review.1 Corporate self-regulation without effective government oversight will not adequately reduce the risk of accidents within the offshore oil exploration industry, nor will it ensure that corporations prepare effectively to respond to a major spill. The potential, near-term, financial benefit for the oil company prevails over the lowprobability risk that a major spill will occur. Recognizing that current domestic regulation lacks effective, continuous monitoring of complex offshore operations, another form of regulation appears necessary. If already-emerging principles …

California Oil And Gas Update, Edward Renwick
California Oil And Gas Update, Edward Renwick
Texas Wesleyan Law Review
The last year has been a busy one in the upstream California oil and gas business. The 2011 Preliminary Report of California Oil and Gas Production Statistics, which was issued in April 2012 by the California Department of Conservation, Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources, reports that 4,033 notices of intention to drill were filed with the Division as contrasted with 2,081 in 2010. Although the Preliminary Report for 2012 is not yet issued, anecdotal evidence suggests 2012 will be at least as active as 2011. Much of the excitement involves California's Monterey and Santos Shales. The Review of …

We describe the main differences in simulations of stratospheric climate and variability by models within the fifth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) that have a model top above the stratopause and relatively fine stratospheric vertical resolution (high-top), and those that have a model top below the stratopause (low-top). Although the simulation of mean stratospheric climate by the two model ensembles is similar, the low-top model ensemble has very weak stratospheric variability on daily and interannual time scales. The frequency of major sudden stratospheric warming events is strongly underestimated by the low-top models with less than half the frequency of events …

Efficient Mining Differential Co-Expression Constant Row Bicluster In Real-Valued Gene Expression Datasets, Miao Wang, Xuequn Shang, Xiaoyuan Li, Zhanhuai Li, Wenbin Liu
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Biclustering aims to mine a number of co-expressed genes under a set of experimental conditions in gene expression dataset. Recently, differential co-expression biclustering approach has been used to identify class-specific biclusters between two gene expres- sion datasets. However, it cannot handle differential co-expression constant row biclusters efficiently in real-valued datasets. In this paper, we propose an algorithm, DRCluster, to identify Differential co-expression constant Row biCluster in two real-valued gene expression datasets. Firstly, DRCluster infers the differential co-expressed genes from each pair of samples in two real-valued gene expression datasets, and constructs a differential weighted undirected sample-sample relational graph. Secondly, the …

Automatic Clustering Of Social Tag Using Community Detection, Weisen Pan, Shizhan Chen, Zhiyong Feng
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Automatically clustering social tags into semantic communities would greatly boost the ability of Web services search engines to retrieve the most relevant ones at the same time improve the accuracy of tag-based service recommendation. In this paper, we first investigate the different collaborative intention between co-occurring tags in Seekda as well as their dynamical aspects. Inspired by the relationships between co-occurring tags, we designed the social tag network. By analyzing the networks constructed, we show that the social tag network have scale free properties. In order to identify densely connected semantic communities, we then introduce a novel graph-based clustering algorithm …
The Upper Preferred Multiple Directed Acyclic Graph Support Vector Machines For Classification, Kan Li, Hang Xu, Wenxiong Huang, Zhonghua Huang
The Upper Preferred Multiple Directed Acyclic Graph Support Vector Machines For Classification, Kan Li, Hang Xu, Wenxiong Huang, Zhonghua Huang
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The current classification algorithms have weak fault-tolerance. In order to solve the problem, a multiple support vector machines method, called Upper preferred Multiple Directed Acyclic Graph Support Vector Machines (UMDAG-SVMs), is proposed. Firstly, we present least squares projection twin support vector machine (LSPTSVM) with confidence-degree for generating binary classifiers. It uses the idea that “when the confidence-degree outputted from the node in the directed graph, is below the threshold, the decision-making process will go on along with the two branches of the node at the same time.”, which strengthens the algorithm’s fault-tolerance. In order to select the parameters of the …
Automatic Removal Of Ocular Artifact From Eeg With Dwt And Ica Method, Mingai Li, Yan Cui, Jinfu Yang
Automatic Removal Of Ocular Artifact From Eeg With Dwt And Ica Method, Mingai Li, Yan Cui, Jinfu Yang
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Ocular artifact (OA) is one of the main interferences in electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings. It appears as a big pulse and has a strong impact to EEG signals. To overcome OA interference in EEG data, a novel automatic method of OA removal, denoted as DWICA, was proposed in this paper. In DWICA, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is applied to every recorded signal to obtain multiple scale coefficients. Then the independent component analysis (ICA) algorithm is used, and its input is the coefficients connected in series. Thus the independent components are acquired quickly in wavelet domain. The criterion of angle cosine …

Where Has All The Road Kill Gone?, Charles R. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
An estimated 80 million birds are killed by colliding with vehicles on U.S. roads each year [1], and millions more die annually in Europe [2] and elsewhere. Losses to vehicles are a serious problem for which various changes in roadway design and maintenance have been proposed [3]. Yet, given the magnitude of the mortality reported for some species [4], we might expect natural selection to favor individuals that either learn to avoid cars or that have other traits making them less likely to collide with vehicles. If so, the frequency of road kill should decline over time. No information is …

An Assessment Of Relationship Quality Between Forest Service Land Managers And Volunteers, Jessica H. Evett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The relationship between Forest Service land managers and volunteers was studied quantitatively utilizing theoretical principles of relationship management theory and efficacy. 39 Forest Service employees completed quantitative surveys designed to compare within sample responses related to four volunteer partner types. Results showed measurable differences between mean scores for relationship quality and efficacy levels between partnership types selected as those land managers most liked and least liked working with. Partial support was found for the hypothesis stating that levels of relationship quality would predict willingness to recruit and work with volunteers, and partial support was also found for the hypothesis stating …

Evaluating Tradeoffs Among Ecosystem Services To Inform Marine Spatial Planning, Sarah E. Lester, Christopher Costello, Benjamin S. Halpern, Steven D. Gaines, Crow White, John A. Barth
Biological Sciences
A central challenge for natural resource management is developing rigorous yet practical approaches for balancing the costs and benefits of diverse human uses of ecosystems. Economic theory has a long history of evaluating tradeoffs in returns from different assets to identify optimal investment strategies. There has been recent progress applying this framework to the delivery of ecosystem services in land use planning. However, despite growing national and international interest in marine spatial planning, there is a lack of parallel frameworks in the marine realm. This paper reviews an ecosystem service tradeoff analysis framework and provides a more comprehensive synthesis for …
