Aspects Of Facial Contrast Decrease With Age And Are Cues For Age Perception, Aurelie Porcheron, Emmanuelle Mauger, Richard Russell
Aspects Of Facial Contrast Decrease With Age And Are Cues For Age Perception, Aurelie Porcheron, Emmanuelle Mauger, Richard Russell
Psychology Faculty Publications
Age is a primary social dimension. We behave differently toward people as a function of how old we perceive them to be. Age perception relies on cues that are correlated with age, such as wrinkles. Here we report that aspects of facial contrast–the contrast between facial features and the surrounding skin–decreased with age in a large sample of adult Caucasian females. These same aspects of facial contrast were also significantly correlated with the perceived age of the faces. Individual faces were perceived as younger when these aspects of facial contrast were artificially increased, but older when these aspects of facial …

Tumor Antigens Revealed By Exome Seqeuncing Drive Editing Of Tumor Immunogenicity, Matthew David Vesely
Tumor Antigens Revealed By Exome Seqeuncing Drive Editing Of Tumor Immunogenicity, Matthew David Vesely
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Accumulated data from animal models and human cancer patients strongly support the concept that immunity cannot only function as an extrinsic tumor suppressor, but also shape tumor immunogenicity. These observations led to the development of the cancer immunoediting hypothesis that stresses the dual host-protective and tumor-sculpting actions of immunity on developing cancers. We previously demonstrated important roles for lymphocytes and type I: IFN-α/β) and type II: IFN-γ) interferons in cancer immunoediting. In the present work, we confirmed the role of IFN-γ in sculpting tumor immunogenicity and provide evidence that antigens expressed by tumors drive the destructive or sculpting actions of …

Enhanced Phagocytic Activity Of Hiv-Specific Antibodies Correlates With Natural Production Of Immunoglobulins With Skewed Affinity For Fcγr2a And Fcγr2b, Margaret E. Ackerman, Anne-Sophie Dugast, Elizabeth G. Mcandrew, Stephen Tsoukas
Enhanced Phagocytic Activity Of Hiv-Specific Antibodies Correlates With Natural Production Of Immunoglobulins With Skewed Affinity For Fcγr2a And Fcγr2b, Margaret E. Ackerman, Anne-Sophie Dugast, Elizabeth G. Mcandrew, Stephen Tsoukas
Dartmouth Scholarship
While development of an HIV vaccine that can induce neutralizing antibodies remains a priority, decades of research have proven that this is a daunting task. However, accumulating evidence suggests that antibodies with the capacity to harness innate immunity may provide some protection. While significant research has focused on the cytolytic properties of antibodies in acquisition and control, less is known about the role of additional effector functions. In this study, we investigated antibody-dependent phagocytosis of HIV immune complexes, and we observed significant differences in the ability of antibodies from infected subjects to mediate this critical effector function. We observed both …

Recapture Heterogeneity In Cliff Swallows: Increased Exposure To Mist Nets Leads To Net Avoidance, Erin A. Roche, Charles R. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown, Kristen M. Lear
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Ecologists often use mark-recapture to estimate demographic variables such as abundance, growth rate, or survival for samples of wild animal populations. A common assumption underlying mark-recapture is that all animals have an equal probability of detection, and failure to meet or correct for this assumption–as when certain members of the population are either easier or more difficult to capture than other animals–can lead to biased and inaccurate demographic estimates. We built within-year and among-years Cormack-Jolly-Seber recaptures-only models to identify causes of capture heterogeneity for a population of colonially nesting cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) caught using mist-netting as a …

Molecular Chaperoning Function Of Ric-8 Is To Fold Nascent Heterotrimeric G Protein Α Subunits, Puiyee Chan, Celestine J. Thomas, Stephen R. Sprang, Gregory G. Tall
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
We have shown that resistance to inhibitors of cholinesterase 8 (Ric-8) proteins regulate an early step of heterotrimeric G protein α (Gα) subunit biosynthesis. Here, mammalian and plant cell-free translation systems were used to study Ric-8A action during Gα subunit translation and protein folding. Gα translation rates and overall produced protein amounts were equivalent in mock and Ric-8A-immunodepleted rabbit reticulocyte lysate (RRL). GDP-AlF4(-)-bound Gαi, Gαq, Gα13, and Gαs produced in mock-depleted RRL had characteristic resistance to limited trypsinolysis, showing that these G proteins were folded properly. Gαi, Gαq, and Gα13, but not Gαs produced from Ric-8A-depleted RRL were not protected …

Eurasian Jays Predict The Food Preferences Of Their Mates, Alan C. Kamil
Eurasian Jays Predict The Food Preferences Of Their Mates, Alan C. Kamil
Avian Cognition Papers
The cognitive abilities of animals continue to fascinate both scientists and nonscientists. Although the abilities of the primates, our closest living relatives, generally attract most interest, several different lines of research have demonstrated high levels of intellectual capacity in birds, particularly corvids. The members of this family are known for their large brains and have performed well in many cognitive tasks using different paradigms (1–3). This finding has led to substantial revision of thinking about avian intelligence, including the suggestion of convergence in the evolution of cognitive abilities between corvids and primates (4). In PNAS, Ostojić et al. (5) add …

We report data from laboratory experiments where participants were primed using phrases related to markets and trade. Participants then participated in trust games with anonymous strangers. The decisions of primed participants are compared to those of a control group. We find evidence that priming for market participation affects positively the beliefs regarding the trustworthiness of anonymous strangers and increases trusting decisions.

Long Prereproductive Selection And Divergence By Depth In A Caribbean Candelabrum Coral, Carlos Prada, Michael E. Hellberg
Long Prereproductive Selection And Divergence By Depth In A Caribbean Candelabrum Coral, Carlos Prada, Michael E. Hellberg
Faculty Publications
Long-lived corals, the foundation of modern reefs, often follow ecological gradients, so that populations or sister species segregate by habitat. Adaptive divergence maintains sympatric congeners after secondary contact or may even generate species by natural selection in the face of gene flow. Such ecological divergence, initially between alternative phenotypes within populations, may be aided by immigrant inviability, especially when a long period separates larval dispersal and the onset of reproduction, during which selection can sort lineages to match different habitats. Here, we evaluate the strength of one ecological factor (depth) to isolate populations by comparing the genes and morphologies of …

Ultraviolet Photodissociation Of Ocs: Product Energy And Angular Distributions, George C. Mcbane, Johan A. Schmidt, M. S. Johnson, Reinhard Schinke
Peer Reviewed Articles
The ultraviolet photodissociation of carbonyl sulfide (OCS) was studied using three-dimensional potential energy surfaces and both quantum mechanical dynamics calculations and classical trajectory calculations including surface hopping. The transition dipole moment functions used in an earlier study [J. A. Schmidt, M. S. Johnson, G. C. McBane, and R. Schinke, J. Chem. Phys. 137, 054313 (2012)] were improved with more extensive treatment of excited electronic states. The new functions indicate a much larger contribution from the 1 1A" state (1Σ- in linear OCS) than was found in the previous work. The new transition dipole functions yield …

The Cycle Of Violence In Context: Exploring The Moderating Roles Of Neighborhood Disadvantage And Cultural Norms, Emily M. Wright, Abigail A. Fagan
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Although the cycle of violence theory has received empirical support (Widom, 1989a, 1989b), in reality, not all victims of child physical abuse become involved in violence. Therefore, little is known regarding factors that may moderate the relationship between abuse and subsequent violence, particularly contextual circumstances. The current investigation used longitudinal data from 1,372 youth living in 79 neighborhoods who participated in the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN), and it employed a multivariate, multilevel Rasch model to explore the degree to which neighborhood disadvantage and cultural norms attenuate or strengthen the abuse–violence relationship. The results indicate that the …

Genetic And Epigenetic Interactions In In Vivo And In Vitro Reprogramming, Margaret Ashley Young
Genetic And Epigenetic Interactions In In Vivo And In Vitro Reprogramming, Margaret Ashley Young
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
In cancer pathogenesis and induced pluripotent stem: iPS) cell production, an essential step for reprogramming is acquisition of self-renewal. In hematopoietic cells, HOX genes are partially responsible for self-renewal, and HOX gene dysregulation commonly occurs in acute myeloid leukemia: AML). HOX dysregulation is seen in AML with translocations involving HOX genes themselves: e.g. NUP98-HOXA9) and with other disease-initiating translocations: e.g. MLL translocations and inv(16)). However, HOX genes are also highly expressed in many AML samples without translocations; the mechanism that causes "dysregulation" in these cases is unknown. Whole genome sequencing of 45 de novo AML genomes showed that recurrent mutations …

Canonical Wnt Signaling Induces Bmp-4 To Specify Slow Myofibrogenesis Of Fetal Myoblasts, Kazuki Kuroda, Shihuan Kuang, Makoto M. Taketo, Michael A. Rudnicki
Department of Animal Sciences Faculty Publications
Background
The Wnts are secreted proteins that play important roles in skeletal myogenesis, muscle fiber type diversification, neuromuscular junction formation and muscle stem cell function. How Wnt proteins orchestrate such diverse activities remains poorly understood. Canonical Wnt signaling stabilizes β-catenin, which subsequently translocate to the nucleus to activate the transcription of TCF/LEF family genes.
Methods
We employed TCF-reporter mice and performed analysis of embryos and of muscle groups. We further isolated fetal myoblasts and performed cell and molecular analyses.
Results
We found that canonical Wnt signaling is strongly activated during fetal myogenesis and weakly activated in adult muscles limited to …
