Cordyceps sinensis is a medicinal mushroom used for centuries in Asian countries as a health supplement and tonic. Hirsutella sinensis—the anamorphic, mycelial form of C. sinensis—possesses similar properties, and is increasingly used as a health supplement. Recently, C. sinensis extracts were shown to inhibit the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1β in lipopolysaccharide-treated macrophages. However, the molecular mechanism underlying this process has remained unclear. In addition, whether H. sinensis mycelium (HSM) extracts also inhibit the production of IL-1β has not been investigated. In the present study, the HSM extract suppresses IL-1β and IL-18 secretion, and ATP-induced activation of caspase-1. Notably, …

The Causal Effect Of Market Priming On Trust: An Experimental Investigation Using Randomized Control, Omar Al-Ubaydli, Daniel Houser, John Nye, Maria Pia Paganelli, Xiaofei Sophia Pan

Economics Faculty Research

We report data from laboratory experiments where participants were primed using phrases related to markets and trade. Participants then participated in trust games with anonymous strangers. The decisions of primed participants are compared to those of a control group. We find evidence that priming for market participation affects positively the beliefs regarding the trustworthiness of anonymous strangers and increases trusting decisions.

Computationally Designed Peptide Inhibitors Against The Ubiquitin E3 Ligase Scf Fbx4, Bing Hao Mar 2013

Computationally Designed Peptide Inhibitors Against The Ubiquitin E3 Ligase Scf Fbx4, Bing Hao

UCHC Articles - Research

Telomerase is a reverse transcriptase that maintains telomere length. Telomerase activity is suppressed in somatic cells such that telomere attrition triggers replicative senescence or apop-tosis. In cancer cells, telomerase is up-regulated or reactivated, effectively making the cell immortal. Previous studies have shown that telomerase activity positively correlates with unfavorable cancer prognosis. Since it was discovered that activation of telomerase is a rate-limiting step in carcinogenesis, telomerase has gained much interest as a drug target. Both screening and structure-based methods have been extensively employed to identify small molecule leads that can selectively disrupt telomerase activity. Strategies commonly used to target telomerase …

Birck and NCN Publications

InGaAs gate-all-around metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) with 6 nm nanowire thickness have been experimentally demonstrated at sub-80 nm channel length. The effects of forming gas anneal (FGA) on the performance of these devices have been systematically studied. The 30min 400 degrees C FGA (4% H-2/96% N-2) is found to improve the quality of the Al2O3/InGaAs interface, resulting in a subthreshold slope reduction over 20mV/dec (from 117mV/dec in average to 93mV/dec). Moreover, the improvement of interface quality also has positive impact on the on-state device performance. A scaling metrics study has been carried out for FGA treated devices with channel lengths …

Laser Direct Writing Of Silicon Field Effect Transistor Sensors, Woongsik Nam, James I. Mitchell, Chookiat Tansarawiput, Minghao Qi, Xianfan Xu

Birck and NCN Publications

We demonstrate a single step technique to fabricate silicon wires for field effect transistor sensors. Boron-doped silicon wires are fabricated using laser direct writing in combination with chemical vapor deposition, which has the advantages of precise control of position, orientation, and length, and in situ doping. The silicon wires can be fabricated to have very rough surfaces by controlling laser operation parameters, and thus, have large surface areas, enabling high sensitivity for sensing. Highly sensitive pH sensing is demonstrated. We expect our method can be expanded to the fabrication of various sensing devices beyond chemical sensors. (C) 2013 American Institute …

Large Woody Debris Mobility Areas In A Coastal Old-Growth Forest Stream, Oregon, Beth Marie Bambrick

Dissertations and Theses

This study uses a spatial model to visualize LWD mobility areas in an approximate 1km reach of Cummins Creek, a fourth-order stream flowing through an old-growth Sitka spruce-western hemlock forest in the Oregon Coast Range. The model solves a LWD incipient motion equation for nine wood size combinations (0.1m, 0.4m, 1.7m diameters by 1.0m, 6.87m, 47.2m lengths) during the 2-year, 10-year, and 100-year discharge events. Model input variables were derived from a combination of field survey, remotely sensed, and modeled data collected or derived between June 2010 and July 2011. LWD mobility map results indicate the 2-year discharge mobilizes all …

Insights Into The Roles Of Desolvation And Π-Electron Interactions During Dna Polymerization, Edward A. Motea, Irene Lee, Anthony J. Berdis

Chemistry Faculty Publications

This report describes the use of several isosteric non-natural nucleotides as probes to evaluate the roles of nucleobase shape, size, solvation energies, and π-electron interactions as forces influencing key kinetic steps of the DNA polymerization cycle. Results are provided using representative high- and low-fidelity DNA polymerases. Results generated with the E. coli Klenow fragment reveal that this high-fidelity polymerase utilizes hydrophobic nucleotide analogues with higher catalytic efficiencies compared to hydrophilic analogues. These data support a major role for nucleobase desolvation during nucleotide selection and insertion. In contrast, the low-fidelity HIV-1 reverse transcriptase discriminates against hydrophobic analogues and only tolerates non-natural …

Lateralized Difference In Tympanic Membrane Temperature: Emotion And Hemispheric Activity, Ruth E. Propper, Tad T. Brunyé Mar 2013

Lateralized Difference In Tympanic Membrane Temperature: Emotion And Hemispheric Activity, Ruth E. Propper, Tad T. Brunyé

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We review literature examining relationships between tympanic membrane temperature (TMT), affective/motivational orientation, and hemispheric activity. Lateralized differences in TMT might enable real-time monitoring of hemispheric activity in real-world conditions, and could serve as a corroborating marker of mental illnesses associated with specific affective dysregulation. We support the proposal that TMT holds potential for broadly indexing lateralized brain physiology during tasks demanding the processing and representation of emotional and/or motivational states, and for predicting trait-related affective/motivational orientations. The precise nature of the relationship between TMT and brain physiology, however, remains elusive. Indeed the limited extant research has sampled different participant populations …

A Novel Cell-Based Hybrid Acoustic Wave Biosensor With Impedimetric Sensing Capabilities, Fei Liu, Fang Li, Anis Nurashikin Nordin, Ioana Voiculescu

Publications and Research

A novel multiparametric biosensor system based on living cells will be presented. The biosensor system includes two biosensing techniques on a single device: resonant frequency measurements and electric cell-substrate impedance sensing (ECIS). The multiparametric sensor system is based on the innovative use of the upper electrode of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) resonator as working electrode for the ECIS technique. The QCM acoustic wave sensor consists of a thin AT-cut quartz substrate with two gold electrodes on opposite sides. For integration of the QCM with the ECIS technique a semicircular counter electrode was fabricated near the upper electrode on the …

Differential Effects Of Micrornas On Glioblastoma Growth And Migration, Duane Jeansonne, Marco Pacifici, Adam Lassak, Krzysztof Reiss, Giuseppe Russo, Jovanny Zabaleta, Francesca Peruzzi Mar 2013

Differential Effects Of Micrornas On Glioblastoma Growth And Migration, Duane Jeansonne, Marco Pacifici, Adam Lassak, Krzysztof Reiss, Giuseppe Russo, Jovanny Zabaleta, Francesca Peruzzi

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Glioblastoma multiforme is characterized by rapid proliferation, aggressive metastatic potential, and resistance to radio- and chemotherapy. The matricellular protein CYR61 regulates cellular proliferation and migration and is highly expressed in Glioblastomas. MicroRNAs are 22-nucleotides long RNAs that regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally. Here, we utilized the LN229 glioblastoma cell line and found that CYR61 is a target of miR-136, miR-155, and miR-634. Over-expression of miR-136 and miR-634 miRNAs negatively affected proliferation, but not migration, while expression of miR-155 reduced migration but did not affect the proliferation of LN229 cells. Investigation of the molecular mechanisms affected by expression of miR-634 revealed an …

Batf3-Deficient Mice: Susceptibility To Toxoplasma Gondii And Responses To Il-12 Treatment In Vivo, Mona Mashayekhi

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

CD8α+ dendritic cells are important in vivo for cross-presentation of antigens derived from intracellular pathogens and tumors. Additionally, stimulation of IL-12 production by CD8α+ DCs has suggested a role for these cells in response to Toxoplasma gondii antigens, although no experiments have yet shown an in vivo requirement for these cells against T. gondii infection. Towards this goal, we examined T. gondii infection of Batf3-/- mice, which selectively lack only lymphoid-resident CD8α+ DCs and related peripheral CD103+ DCs. Batf3-/- mice were extremely susceptible to T. gondii infection, with defective priming of CD8+ T cells, and decreased production of IL-12 and …

Monocytic Cells Mediate Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor-Induced Mobilization Of Hematopoietic Stem And Progenitor Cells, Mahil Rao Mar 2013

Monocytic Cells Mediate Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor-Induced Mobilization Of Hematopoietic Stem And Progenitor Cells, Mahil Rao

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In the normal, healthy adult, hematopoiesis occurs primarily in the bone marrow. As such, at steady state, a majority of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells: HSPCs) are tightly held within specialized areas of the bone marrow collectively referred to as the `hematopoietic stem cell niche.' In response to various forms of stress, such as infection or hemorrhage, or following administration of a variety of pharmacologic agents, niche function is altered and HSPCs are released into the peripheral circulation through a process known as mobilization. Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor: G-CSF), a hematopoietic growth factor, is the most widely-used mobilizing agent clinically. However, …

Use Of Soybean Lecithin In Shape Controlled Synthesis Of Gold Nanoparticles, Benjamin Robert Ayres Mar 2013

Use Of Soybean Lecithin In Shape Controlled Synthesis Of Gold Nanoparticles, Benjamin Robert Ayres

Dissertations and Theses

The work presented in this dissertation is a composite of experiments in the growth of gold nanoparticles with specific optical properties of interest. The goal is to synthesize these gold nanoparticles using soybean extract for not only shape control, but for propensity as a biocompatible delivery system. The optical properties of these nanoparticles has found great application in coloring glass during the Roman empire and, over the centuries, has grown into its own research field in applications of nanoparticulate materials. Many of the current functions include use in biological systems as biosensors and therapeutic applications, thus making biocompatibility a necessity. …

Transmuted Log-Logistic Distribution, Gokarna R. Aryal Mar 2013

Transmuted Log-Logistic Distribution, Gokarna R. Aryal

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

A generalization of the log-logistic distribution so-called the transmuted log-logistic distribution is proposed and studied. Various structural properties including explicit expressions for the moments, quantiles, mean deviations of the new distribution are derived. The estimation of the model parameters is performed by maximum likelihood method. We hope that the new distribution proposed here will serve as an alternative model to the other models which are available in the literature for modeling positive real data in many areas.

A Bivariate Compound Class Of Geometric–Poisson And Lifetime Distributions, Hamid Bidram Mar 2013

A Bivariate Compound Class Of Geometric–Poisson And Lifetime Distributions, Hamid Bidram

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Recently, Alkarni and Oraby (2012) obtained general forms for some properties of the compound class of Poisson and lifetime (PL) distributions. In this paper, we obtain some general forms for joint density, cumulative distribution, and survival functions of the bivariate case of PL class. Its conditional distributions are also studied. In addition, the compound class of geometric and lifetime distributions as well as its mixed bivariate case are discussed. For this class some conditional probabilities useful for reliability, biological survey, and engineering are also studied. Our class contains several new mixed bivariate distributions in special cases.
