The Cost Of Ignorance: Shell-Shock In Britain During World War I, Bradley W. Corfman Apr 2013

The Cost Of Ignorance: Shell-Shock In Britain During World War I, Bradley W. Corfman

Honors Projects

Because shell-shock is a term specific to World War I but describes a condition which remains today, this paper sets the context for studying the British experience of shell-shock by carefully explaining what modern psychology says regarding PTSD and examining a few select texts by Wilfred Owen to demonstrate the psychological concepts in historic pieces. A historical comparison is made between the modern understanding of PTSD and the historic understanding of shell-shock as set forth in the Freudian paradigm between 1914 and 1920. The final pages examine the effects of this paradigm on the conclusions drawn by the War Office …

An Inverse Relationship Between Production And Export Efficiency In The Southern Ocean, Kanchan Maiti, Matthew A. Charette, Ken O. Buesseler, Mati Kahru

Faculty Publications

In the past two decades, a number of studies have been carried out in the Southern Ocean to look at export production using drifting sediment traps and thorium-234 based measurements, which allows us to reexamine the validity of using the existing relationships between production, export efficiency, and temperature to derive satellite-based carbon export estimates in this region. Comparisons of in situ export rates with modeled rates indicate a two to fourfold overestimation of export production by existing models. Comprehensive analysis of in situ data indicates two major reasons for this difference: (i) in situ data indicate a trend of decreasing …

Evidence For Tankyrases As Antineoplastic Targets In Lung Cancer, Alexander M. Busch, Kevin C. Johnson, Radu V. Stan, Aarti Sanglikar, Yashi Ahmed, Ethan Dmitrovsky, Sarah J. Freemantle

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: New pharmacologic targets are urgently needed to treat or prevent lung cancer, the most common cause of cancer death for men and women. This study identified one such target. This is the canonical Wnt signaling pathway, which is deregulated in cancers, including those lacking adenomatous polyposis coli or β -catenin mutations. Two poly-ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) enzymes regulate canonical Wnt activity: tankyrase (TNKS) 1 and TNKS2. These enzymes poly-ADP-ribosylate (PARsylate) and destabilize axin, a key component of the β -catenin phosphorylation complex. Methods: This study used comprehensive gene profiles to uncover deregulation of the Wnt pathway in murine transgenic and …

The Effects Of Spermine And Spermidine On The Interactions Of Human Factors Ixa, Xa, Xia, And Iia Wi, Caitlyn Menicucci

Honors Projects

Heparin is a common anticoagulant used in hospitals that has been found to promote the interaction of human factor IXa with Anti-Thrombin III, creating a [IXa-ATIII] complex when put through electrophoresis. Protamine Sulfate has been found to inhibit such interactions. Therefore, this project will entail the use of four different human factors that are commonly found in the blood cascading system, Human Factors IXa, Xa, XIa, and IIa, to observe their interaction with Anti-Thrombin III. These human factors will be used in correspondence with two polyamines, Spermine and Spermidine, to see if these polyamines act more like Heparin and promote …

Liposomal Fasudil, A Rho-Kinase Inhibitor, For Prolonged Pulmonary Preferential Vasodilation In Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, Vivek Gupta, Nilesh Gupta, Imam H. Shaik, Reza Mehvar, Ivan F. Mcmurty, Masahiko Osa, Eva Nozik-Grayck, Fakhrul Ahsan

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Current pharmacological interventions for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) require continuous infusions, multiple inhalations, or oral administration of drugs that act on various pathways involved in the pathogenesis of PAH. However, invasive methods of administration, short duration of action, and lack of pulmonary selectivity result in noncompliance and poor patient outcomes. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that encapsulation of an investigational anti-PAH molecule fasudil (HA-1077), a Rho-kinase inhibitor, into liposomal vesicles results in prolonged vasodilation in distal pulmonary arterioles. Liposomes were prepared by hydration and extrusion method and fasudil was loaded by ammonium sulfate-induced transmembrane electrochemical gradient. Liposomes were …

Journal of Electrochemistry

Charge transfer is one of the essential life processes. In the past decades, the electrochemical methods have been developed to study life science in a unique physicochemical view and have exhibited abundant and precious information beyond conventional biological techniques. As bioelectrochemical research areas evolved from the fundamental studies of biomolecules’ electrochemical behaviours in non-living conditions to the living cells in intro and in vivo, and further to the single molecule in living systems, the role of instruments becomes more and more crucial. The performances of instruments such as sensitivity, resolution (time, spatial and eneygy resolutions) and controllability are more demanding …

Fabrication And Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Of Ultrathin Nanoporous Gold Films, Shi Feng, Shu Chen, Qing Yang, Juan Xiang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Ultrathin nanoporous gold films (NPGF) with a thickness of approximately 50 nm were fabricated via electrochemical dealloy method. The morphology of NPGF was evaluated with a parameter of surface roughness. SEM results demonstrate that the fabrication of NPGF with different roughness factors can be achieved by controlling the circles of cyclic voltammetry. UV-Vis spectra indicate that the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of NPGF is affected by the roughness of NPGF. With the optimal roughness factor, NPGF displays a linear relationship between the ethanediol concentration and the absorbance intensity at λ = 450 nm. The LSPR effect of NPGF presents …

Punishment And Praise: Grappling With Shyness In Children's And Young Adult Literature, Katherine Stein

Theses & Honors Papers

This thesis examines the treatment of childhood shyness in literature for children and young adults. With over thirty examples and reviews of children’s and young adult texts, it describes how shyness is often regarded as a problem in common social models and becomes stigmatized. It reproves the often cruel and disdainful treatment of shyness in such literature and calls for a new look at the common childhood “ailment.”

Does Criticisms Overcome The Praises Of Journal Impact Factor?, M. Fooladi, H. Salehi, M.M. Yunus, M. Farhadi, A. Aghaei Chadegani, H. Farhadi, N. Ale Ebrahim

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Journal impact factor (IF) as a gauge of influence and impact of a particular journal comparing with other journals in the same area of research, reports the mean number of citations to the published articles in particular journal. Although, IF attracts more attention and being used more frequently than other measures, it has been subjected to criticisms, which overcome the advantages of IF. Critically, extensive use of IF may result in destroying editorial and researchers' behaviour, which could compromise the quality of scientific articles. Therefore, it is the time of the timeliness and importance of a new invention of journal …

Botany Of Desire: Looking At The Rose Plant As A Manmade Tool Of Love, Taylor Aaserud Apr 2013

Botany Of Desire: Looking At The Rose Plant As A Manmade Tool Of Love, Taylor Aaserud

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

The use of roses as a symbol of emotion (specifically love) and as a result, a model of artificial selection, is rarely questioned. These plants share a rich history with multiple humanities around the world and have been a subject of genetic interest to see exactly what genes are being expressed that signal those beautiful desirable traits. To answer the question of “why” these plants have been a vector for human love for so long, I have analyzed 7 articles, one of them outlining the cause of the favored “double flower” mutation found in so many modern roses today. Upon …

Discrete Trajectories Of Coparenting Over The Transition To Parenthood, Larisa N. Cicila

Open Access Theses

This study endeavors to examine whether discrete trajectories of self-report coparenting exist over the transition to parenthood; if findings support discrete trajectories, pre-birth predictors of class membership will be investigated, as well as whether class membership predicts outcomes at 2 years postpartum. As part of a larger study, ninety couples pregnant with their first child completed self-report measures of coparenting at 1, 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months postpartum. Models utilizing Growth Mixture Modeling (GMM) and Latent Class Growth Analysis (LCGA) were explored. Results indicated significant evidence for the existence of discrete trajectories; a three-class LCGA that divided the …
