Role Of Ubiquitin E3 Ligase Breast Cancer Associated Gene 2 (Bca2) In Sumoylation, Fareea Khaliq Apr 2013

Role Of Ubiquitin E3 Ligase Breast Cancer Associated Gene 2 (Bca2) In Sumoylation, Fareea Khaliq

Honors College Theses

As the occurrence of breast cancer increases around the world, the need for new therapeutic medicine becomes more vital to sustain the population. In order to accomplish this, specific mechanisms need to be understood to gain a perspective on the overall process of breast cancer development. One mechanism that is being researched is SUMOylation. The SUMOylation reaction uses small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) proteins, which act as a type of post-translational modification that is necessary in order to preserve protein homeostasis and regulate cellular processes including apoptosis, cell proliferation, and response to stress. The SUMOs attach to a target protein through …

Bats Of Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Texas: Community Composition, Abundance, And Seasonal Acivity, Tamera D. H. Riedle, Raymond S. Matlack

Western North American Naturalist

Basic natural history information is lacking for many bats, especially for bats of the Texas Panhandle. We examined community composition, relative abundance, and seasonal activity of bats in Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Texas, using 3 survey methods (mist net, roost surveys, and acoustic monitoring) between July 2006 and May 2009. Twelve species of bats were captured or observed, with the Brazilian free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis), canyon bat (Parastrellus hesperus), and big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus) being the most common. Acoustic calls of 2 additional species, most likely the California myotis (Myotis californicus …

Legionella Pneumophila Infection Of Drosophila S2 Cells Induces Only Minor Changes In Mitochondrial Dynamics., Elizabeth Wen Sun, Monica L. Wagner, Amanda Maize, Doris Kemler, Elisabeth Garland-Kuntz, Li Xu, Zhao-Qing Luo, Peter J. Hollenbeck

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

During infection of cells by Legionella pneumophila, the bacterium secretes a large number of effector proteins into the host cell cytoplasm, allowing it to alter many cellular processes and make the vacuole and the host cell into more hospitable environments for bacterial replication. One major change induced by infection is the recruitment of ER-derived vesicles to the surface of the vacuole, where they fuse with the vacuole membrane and prevent it from becoming an acidified, degradative compartment. However, the recruitment of mitochondria to the region of the vacuole has also been suggested by ultrastructural studies. In order to test …

Comparison Of Injection Discomfort And Anesthetic Duration Of Plain Polocaine Versus Epinephrine Containing Articaine And Lidocaine, Dana Doan

Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: To determine possible differences in the pain level and soft tissue anesthesia duration of plain polocaine versus epinephrine-containing articaine and lidocaine during intraoral injections. Methods: Forty-eight subjects received plain polocaine and one epinephrine-containing anesthetic. Injections were randomized according to the first injection a)left or right buccal sulcus and b)epinephrine or not. The second injections were the opposite conditions. Subjects then recorded discomfort on a VAS and the time anesthesia wore off. Result: The second injection’s pain rating was influenced by the first. This carry-over effect makes it impossible to analyze all of the data. An analysis of the first …

Investigating The Potential Applications Of A Raman Tweezer System, John Wray

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the construction of an Optical Tweezer apparatus to be used in conjunction with a confocal Raman spectrometer. The tweezer utilizes an infrared (λ=1064 nm) laser directed into an inverted microscope with NA=1.4 oil immersion 100x objective lens that strongly focuses the laser light into a sample to function as a single-beam gradient force trap. The long term goal of this research program is to develop a single molecule Raman tweezers apparatus that allows one to control the position of a Raman nanoplasmonic amplifier. This thesis describes the construction of the Raman tweezer apparatus along with several Raman …

The Adequacy Of International Legal Obligations For Environmental Protection During Armed Conflict, Arie Afriansyah Apr 2013

The Adequacy Of International Legal Obligations For Environmental Protection During Armed Conflict, Arie Afriansyah

Indonesia Law Review

Since it first developed, the law of war has focused on protecting human beings. It prioritises human protection by controlling the conduct of belligerents in order to minimise human injuries and casualties. However, the consequences of war are seldom limited to human casualties. War also causes major destruction to the environment. This article shows that despite prioritising human protection, international law provides a significant number of rules to protect the environment during armed conflicts. Contrary to claims that existing rules are insufficient, the law of war adequately safeguards the environment during armed conflicts by prohibiting certain military activities that may …

Self-Organizing: From Child’S Play To An Effective Wellness Program, Francisco Guajardo, Brian J. Warren, Lin Wang

Organization and School Leadership Faculty Publications

This article examines the exercise practices of a group of faculty members at a regional university who for a decade have participated in their own racquetball league. These professors self-organized their exercise regimen and during the period of their participation have found significant benefits beyond the physical benefits, as a result. Through the production of reflective narratives focused on the impact of their racquetball participation, their self-reported data show two broad themes and numerous sub-themes that emerge from their exercise experience. They reveal significant health benefits, and they express more deeply the benefits of the positive social interaction that impacts …

Control Of Neuroendocrine Cell Physiology By A Single Transcription Factor, Drosophila Basic Helix Loop Helix Regulator Dimmed, Tarik Hadzic Apr 2013

Control Of Neuroendocrine Cell Physiology By A Single Transcription Factor, Drosophila Basic Helix Loop Helix Regulator Dimmed, Tarik Hadzic

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Neuroendocrine cells feature a large capacity for the processing, accumulation and regulated release of bioactive peptides and peptide hormones. The ultrastructural correlate of this regulated secretory pathway is a specialized organelle, called a dense core vesicle: DCV). DCVs are typically larger than conventional, small synaptic vesicles. Past work has identified intrinsic DCV proteins: non-cargo proteins, like the processing enzyme, carboxypeptidase) or ancillary ones that play a role in DCV trafficking and exocytosis: like CAPS, the Ca2+-dependent activator protein for secretion). Currently, there is a lack of understanding of the developmental and physiological mechanisms that permit neurosecretory cells to coordinate and …

Studies Of A New Hybrid Taxon In The Artemisia Tridentata (Asteraceae: Anthemideae) Complex, Heather D. Garrison, Leila M. Shultz, E. Durant Mcarthur Apr 2013

Studies Of A New Hybrid Taxon In The Artemisia Tridentata (Asteraceae: Anthemideae) Complex, Heather D. Garrison, Leila M. Shultz, E. Durant Mcarthur

Western North American Naturalist

Members of the Artemisia tridentata complex (ASTERACEAE: Anthemideae: Artemisiasubgen. Tridentatae) have adapted to changing environmental conditions through geographic migration, introgression, and hybridization. These processes have resulted in morphologic and genetic variation. A presumed hybrid (“Bonneville” big sagebrush) of the complex occurs in the moister ranges of A. t. ssp. wyomingensis and can be found growing with shrub species commonly associated with A. t. ssp. vaseyana. These populations appear to be preferred habitat for sage-grouse and are more heavily grazed by ungulates than the parental populations. We determined ploidy levels and conducted a detailed morphological analysis to determine if …

Nongame Fish Species Distribution And Habitat Associations In The Snake River Basin Of Southern Idaho, Kevin A. Meyer, James A. Lamansky Jr., Daniel J. Schill, Donald W. Zaroban Apr 2013

Nongame Fish Species Distribution And Habitat Associations In The Snake River Basin Of Southern Idaho, Kevin A. Meyer, James A. Lamansky Jr., Daniel J. Schill, Donald W. Zaroban

Western North American Naturalist

The distribution and abundance of game fish populations are commonly monitored closely, whereas sampling of nongame species is often neglected. We used a broad-scale salmonid sampling project both to simultaneously assess the distribution and relative abundance of nongame fish species in small streams (i.e., ≤15 m wetted width) in the Snake River basin of southern Idaho and to relate the distribution and abundance of nongame species to abiotic and biotic stream conditions in the study area. Of the 1738 reaches surveyed, 34% were dry or contained too little water to support fish, and an additional 21% had flowing water but …

Medusahead Invasion Along Unimproved Roads, Animal Trails, And Random Transects, Kirk W. Davies, Aleta M. Nafus, Matthew D. Madsen Apr 2013

Medusahead Invasion Along Unimproved Roads, Animal Trails, And Random Transects, Kirk W. Davies, Aleta M. Nafus, Matthew D. Madsen

Western North American Naturalist

Medusahead (Taeniatherum caput-medusae [L.] Nevski), an exotic annual grass, is rapidly spreading and causing ecological damage across the western United States. Because this exotic plant occupies vast areas and because management resources are limited, it is critical that land managers prioritize where they direct treatment and monitoring efforts. Identifying where and by what means medusahead is spreading could provide valuable information to assist in determining where prevention and control efforts should be applied. We compared medusahead invasion levels along unimproved roads, animal trails, and random transects at 6 sites in southeastern Oregon to determine where medusahead was more common …

Seasonal Variation In Offspring Sex Ratio In The Snowy Plover, Sarah T. Saalfeld, Warren C. Conway, David A. Haukos, William P. Johnson Apr 2013

Seasonal Variation In Offspring Sex Ratio In The Snowy Plover, Sarah T. Saalfeld, Warren C. Conway, David A. Haukos, William P. Johnson

Western North American Naturalist

The Snowy Plover (Charadrius nivosus) is unique in being a determinate layer of an odd modal clutch size and in having a variable mating system in which female brood desertion occurs regularly. These traits make determining Snowy Plover offspring sex ratios important not only for long-term population stability, as the species is of conservation concern, but also for application to sex allocation theory. In this study, we determined Snowy Plover offspring sex ratios, examined differential costs of producing male and female offspring, and evaluated sex ratio variation in relation to maternal condition, habitat condition, and time during the …

Assessing Migratory Stopover Site Quality For Birds During Fall Migration Along Two California Rivers, Renée L. Cormier, Thomas Gardali, Julian K. Wood Apr 2013

Assessing Migratory Stopover Site Quality For Birds During Fall Migration Along Two California Rivers, Renée L. Cormier, Thomas Gardali, Julian K. Wood

Western North American Naturalist

Measuring site quality for birds at migration stopover grounds and identifying critical stopover habitats are both important components of gauging the full life cycle conservation of migratory birds. We evaluated riparian stopover habitat quality on the San Joaquin and Mokelumne rivers in California’s Central Valley for migrant Willow Flycatchers (Empidonax traillii), Orange-crowned Warblers (Oreothlypis celata), Yellow Warblers (Setophaga petechia), and Wilson’s Warblers (Cardellina pusilla). For each species, we used 3 approaches to assess habitat quality: (1) we examined change in mass of individuals that were recaptured at least once; (2) we tracked …

Provisioning Rate, Dietary Composition, And Prey Selection Of Breeding Bobolinks And Grasshopper Sparrows, Ben R. Skipper, Daniel H. Kim Apr 2013

Provisioning Rate, Dietary Composition, And Prey Selection Of Breeding Bobolinks And Grasshopper Sparrows, Ben R. Skipper, Daniel H. Kim

Western North American Naturalist

We examined parental provisioning behavior of 2 grassland obligate birds, Bobolink (Dolichonyx oryzivorus) and Grasshopper Sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum) in south central Nebraska. We assessed rates of food delivery (provisions ⋅ nestling–1h–1) and prey composition by using video recordings. We estimated arthropod availability from sweep net samples collected during 2 breeding seasons. We evaluated the effects of provisioning rate and prey composition on nestling quality inferred through nestling mass. We focused our efforts on lepidopteran larvae and orthopterans, as these orders comprised the bulk of identified prey deliveries. Total provisioning rates at 53 …

Continued Gizzard Shad (Dorosoma Cepedianum) Range Expansion In The Colorado River Basin, P. Aaron Webber, M. Tildon Jones Apr 2013

Continued Gizzard Shad (Dorosoma Cepedianum) Range Expansion In The Colorado River Basin, P. Aaron Webber, M. Tildon Jones

Western North American Naturalist

Gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) was introduced to the Colorado River basin in 1996 as a result of unintentional stocking. It then rapidly spread into lakes and rivers in both the upper and lower Colorado River basins. We captured adult gizzard shad in the Yampa and White rivers in Colorado in 2012 during boat electrofishing surveys not specifically targeting gizzard shad. These captures document the range expansion of gizzard shad into these Green River tributaries. We also collected larval and young-of-year gizzard shad during seining surveys in backwaters of the middle Green River in 2012, thereby confirming that this …

Susceptibility Of Caribbean Reef Fishes To Parasitism By Gnathiid Isopods, Ann Marie Coile Apr 2013

Susceptibility Of Caribbean Reef Fishes To Parasitism By Gnathiid Isopods, Ann Marie Coile

Student Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted at shallow reef sites within Great Lameshur Bay, St. John, United States Virgin Islands during the late spring and summer of 2010 and 2011. Susceptibility to infestation by a gnathiid isopod (Gnathia marleyi: Crustacea: Isopoda) was examined among 16 species from 9 families and 3 orders of common Caribbean reef fishes. All species were susceptible to infestation by gnathiids; however, nocturnal species from the families Haemulidae and Lutjanidae had the highest infestations. In a follow up study, female gnathiids were reared to adulthood to test for differences in components of reproductive success (brood size, larval length) …
