Early Skeletal Morphogenesis: The Role Of Pharyngeal Endoderm Derived Signaling During Specification Of Craniofacial Skeleton And Interplay Of Mechanical Forces And Molecular Signaling During Skeletal Condensation, Poulomi Ray
All Dissertations
This study examines the fundamental principles governing the early
stages of skeletal morphogenesis. I specifically investigate the specification of mesenchymal progenitor cells to a skeletal fate. Using explant culture system, I determine that the pharyngeal endoderm was sufficient, but not necessary for specifying pre-chondrogenic identity. FGF signaling is both sufficient and required for specification of Sox9 expression and specification of prechondrogenic identity, as demonstrated by the addition of recombinant FGF protein or the FGF receptor inhibitor (SU5402) to explanted tissue, respectively. However, FGF signaling cannot maintain Sox9 expression or initiate the chondrogenic program as indicated by the absence of Col2a1 …

Dive Industry Use Patterns And Economic Dependency On Apra Harbor's Coral Reefs, Kathryn E. Sellers
Open Access Theses
The island Territory of Guam is about to experience a large U.S. military buildup. This buildup will set Guam as host of the largest U.S. military presence in all of Asia, with correspondingly advanced Naval base facilities. Part of Naval Base Guam capacity improvements will include significant dredging in Apra Harbor, home to the island’s only deep-water lagoon. This lagoonal area is not only host to a United Stated Naval base, but is also host to Guam’s commercial port and a highly attractive area for many recreational tourism activities. As a preparatory step before dredging activities occur, the island’s dive …
Diversification And Coexistence In The Madagascar Olive (Noronhia, Oleaceae), Cynthia Hong-Wa
Diversification And Coexistence In The Madagascar Olive (Noronhia, Oleaceae), Cynthia Hong-Wa
Dissertations
The long-isolated island of Madagascar provides a suitable setting for studying species diversification, with most groups of organisms there both radiating and showing a high level of endemism. Noronhia is one of these groups and represents the most successful radiation of the olive family (Oleaceae) in Madagascar, with ca. 80 species. In this study, using plastid and nuclear DNA sequences obtained from a comprehensive sampling both within Noronhia and the family, I show that Noronhia, together with Indian Ocean species of Chionanthus, form a monophyletic clade sister to African Chionanthus. The diversification of Noronhia followed a likely Cenozoic dispersal from …

Comparision Of Alternatively Certified And Traditionally Certified Missouri High School Science Teachers’ Perceptions Of Self-Efficacy During The Induction Period, Linda Gaither
Dissertations
Sixty percent of America’s teachers choose traditional baccalaureate programs while the remaining choose one of several alternative pathways. While certification/training is certainly important to preparing effective teachers, other research indicates that teacher efficacy serves as the foundation of teacher behaviors and classroom practice. The purpose of this study (N = 94 induction high school science teachers) was to determine the relationships between certification pathway and opportunities to observe modeling; between years of experience and personal teaching efficacy; and teachers’ perceptions of what characteristics/ experiences best explain personal teaching efficacy. The Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale was used in an on-line …
Compilation And Comparison Of Electron Penetration Ranges As A Function Of Effective Number Of Valence Electrons, Teancum Quist
Compilation And Comparison Of Electron Penetration Ranges As A Function Of Effective Number Of Valence Electrons, Teancum Quist
Senior Theses and Projects
The continuous-slow-down approximation (CSDA) is used to create a simple composite analytical formula to estimate the range or maximum penetration depth of bombarding electrons into traditional materials including conductors, semiconductors, and insulators. This formula generates an approximation to the range using a single fitting parameter, Nv, described as the effective number of valence electrons. This applicability of the formulation extends to electrons with energies from 10MeV. These calculations are of great value for studies of high electron bombardment, such as electron spectroscopy or the vacuum of space. A list comprised of 187 materials has been collected that greatly …
Inclusion Of African American Vernacular English In The Classroom, Chris Roye-Gill
Inclusion Of African American Vernacular English In The Classroom, Chris Roye-Gill
Theses and Dissertations
A plethora of research exists citing the poor academic performance of African American children in this country (D'Angiulli, Siegel, & Maggi, 2004; Labov, 1971, 1995; Miranda, Webb, Brigman, & Peluso, 2007). A large amount of the research is specific to reading deficits identified with African American students. Students who are successful readers are also successful in the other content areas. Lytel and Botel (1990) along with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE, 2009) contend that literacy encompasses reading, writing, speaking, and understanding. They go further to say that if one is to acquire these skills, learning has to be relevant. …

Alterations within the renal renin angiotensin system play a pivotal role in the development and progression of cardiovascular and renal disease. Angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is highly expressed in renal tubules and has been shown to be renoprotective in diabetes. The protease, a disintegrin and metalloprotease (ADAM) 17, is involved in the ectodomain shedding of several transmembrane proteins including ACE2. Renal ACE2 and ADAM17 were significantly increased in db/db mice compared to controls. We investigated the effect of the insulin sensitizer, rosiglitazone, on albuminuria, renal ADAM17 protein expression and ACE2 shedding in db/db diabetic mice. …

Physical Activity And Exercise During Adolescence And Young Adulthood Can Act As Preventative Measures Against The Development Of Osteoporosis In Elderly People, Christine C. Center
Honors College Theses
Osteoporosis, “the silent killer,” is responsible for 8.9 million annual fractures. Although not bound to these factors, osteoporosis typically targets females that are post-menopausal and have a family history of the disease. Osteoporosis is caused by a decrease in bone mass density. Physical activity and exercise and often spoken about when the topic of osteoporosis is discussed because of the impact they have on maintaining bone mass density in an effort to delay osteoporosis. This paper first provides an overview of osteoporosis, explanation of methods of diagnosing osteoporosis, risk factors, complications and treatment for osteoporosis. Topics covered include, bone mass …

Hatching Plasticity Under Complex Conditions: Responses Of Newt Embryos To Chemical And Mechanical Stimuli From Egg And Larval Predators, Brian G. Gall, Leticia L. Hoffmann, Edmund D. Brodie Jr.
Western North American Naturalist
Environmentally cued hatching plasticity is a common attribute of the eggs of oviparous organisms that has been especially well studied in amphibians. Nevertheless, this process has been largely overlooked in species with complex natural histories. We exposed embryos of the rough-skinned newt (Taricha granulosa) to chemical and mechanical stimuli from multiple potential threats, including caddisfly larvae, a major predator on the egg stage of newts. Newt embryos did not exhibit hatching plasticity toward chemical cues from any treatment but, contrary to prediction, did delay hatching in response to mechanical stimuli from an egg predator. Observations of predation by …
Avian Response To Frost-Damaged Aspen In Northern Utah, Andreas Leidolf, Ronald J. Ryel
Avian Response To Frost-Damaged Aspen In Northern Utah, Andreas Leidolf, Ronald J. Ryel
Western North American Naturalist
In early May 2007, northern Utah mountains experienced a period of prolonged warmer-than-normal temperatures, followed by a frost that killed or damaged much of the first-flush quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) foliage. We assessed the effects of this transitory disturbance on the aspen bird species assemblage by comparing breeding bird survey data collected in the Bear River Mountain Range, Utah, USA, in 2005 and 2006 (predisturbance) to data from 2007 (postdisturbance). Whereas bird total abundance, species richness, and species diversity did not differ significantly among years, there were significant year-by–frost damage severity interactions, with plots with low levels of …

Role Of Ubiquitin E3 Ligase Breast Cancer Associated Gene 2 (Bca2) In Sumoylation, Fareea Khaliq
Honors College Theses
As the occurrence of breast cancer increases around the world, the need for new therapeutic medicine becomes more vital to sustain the population. In order to accomplish this, specific mechanisms need to be understood to gain a perspective on the overall process of breast cancer development. One mechanism that is being researched is SUMOylation. The SUMOylation reaction uses small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) proteins, which act as a type of post-translational modification that is necessary in order to preserve protein homeostasis and regulate cellular processes including apoptosis, cell proliferation, and response to stress. The SUMOs attach to a target protein through …
