Mind The Gap: Fostering Scholarship-Into-Practice For Advanced Practice Nursing Students Through Embedded Librarianship, Brenda H. Sheingold, Thomas Harrod

In recent years, librarianship has been increasingly recognized as a critical component of inter-professional healthcare education. This manuscript describes how innovative coordination between libraries and university healthcare programs can remove the barriers to scholarship for graduate students who enroll in distance education (DE) programs. The authors examined the perceived impact of librarian embedment for DE nursing students graduating with master’s degrees from George Washington University in 2013. Librarians were embedded in the first course in which they were enrolled in 2010 to support the mastery of scientific research skills. Prognosis for terminally ill patients is intended to serve the purpose of educating patients on the expected clinical outcome of their illness. This information is generally communicated to a patient by their primary physician when options for fufiher treattnent or "cure" are limited. Learning a prognosis may be helpful to some patients, while burdensome to others. A review of the literature reveals many barriers to effective communication of prognosis. End-of-life decision making by health care providers must respect individual patient values. Indeed, these values must always be viewed as the baseline for developing and pursuing patient-centered palliative care for those with terminal illness. Co-ordinate with this fundamental bioethics principle is that of beneficence or, in other words, respect for conduct which benefits the dying patient by alleviating end-stage suffering — be it physical or existential. Compassion, charity, agape and/or just common sense, should be a part of setting normative standards and of legislative and judicial responses to the task of managing death. Professionals engaged in palliative care have a responsibility to treat their patients by aggressively managing pain and certain kinds of suffering within legal and professional ethical boundaries. Many medical professionals and ethicists, rightly or wrongly, have considered the practices of euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide, which can be categorized as instances of physician-assisted death (PAD), to be beyond the scope of ethically appropriate health care. The purpose of this research study was to examine the meaning of hope at the end of life among Veterans. As people enter the terminal phase of life hope becomes especially important. Recent research has been conducted examining hope among various cultural groups and their experiences of the phenomenon. These studies showed that although hope is a universal phenomenon, different cultural groups ascribe different meanings to it. These cultural variations are important for nurses to consider when caring for patients.

Portland, Maine, has a variety of programs that connect volunteers with youth based on particular risk factors. While there are many criteria that affect the outcomes programs yield for youth, the quality and reach of many of these small nonprofit programs is dependent on their volunteer capacity. The goals of this descriptive research project were to identify: nonprofit youth development program volunteer characteristics compared with local populations and volunteers nationally; motivations or benefits such volunteers associate with volunteering; and factors associated with volunteers’ overall satisfaction and longevity.

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Spiritual formation training in the George Fox University Graduate Department of Clinical Psychology is described. An evangelical Quaker institution, the ethos of George Fox University is intended to foster experiential spiritual development and reflective self-awareness. In a 2008 curriculum revision the faculty attempted to strengthen the experiential dimensions of spiritual formation training even at the risk of reducing training in more academic dimensions of theology and integration. A 2013 program evaluation solicited student and alumni perspectives on the effectiveness of the spiritual formation training they received. Results of the program evaluation suggest areas for future development.

Dispute Resolution Mechanisms For Intractable Medical Futility Disputes, Thaddeus Mason Pope

Medical futility disputes occur frequently in healthcare facilities across the United States. In this Article, I provide an overview of dispute resolution mechanisms through which healthcare providers can resolve these disputes. In Section I, identify three distinctive features of medical futility disputes. First, they usually concern life-sustaining medical treatment for patients in a hospital’s intensive care unit. Second, these patients typically lack decision making capacity. So, a surrogate must make treatment decisions on the patient’s behalf. Third, this surrogate and the patient’s physician disagree over the treatment plan. The surrogate wants to continue life-sustaining treatment. But the physician thinks that …

In the effort of comparing health care quality across hospitals and profiling hospitals, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) utilize risk-standardized outcome in which the hospital-level outcome is standarized adjusting for patient-covariates using hierarchical model for patients outcome clustered within hospital. Even though standardized measure is useful for comparing hospitals, we believe the analysis of observed hospital-level outcome without standarization can reveal additional information at the hospital-level. Describe patient-related and hospice-related characteristics such as gender, average length of hospice stay, primary diagnoses, average daily census, number of admissions per year, net operating revenues, inpatient unit (IPU) operating costs, and medication expenditures of hospices in Ohio and compare it with NHPCO data.

2. Identify and analyze therapeutic drug classes and medications with the most frequent utilization rates and largest percentage of expenditures in hospice care.
