The Mirror In Her Words, Elizabeth Ketchum
Best Midwestern High School Writing 2013 Winners
This a personal, relatable piece. I am submitting it because I am proud of it for the tone and style of this memoir. I really liked the process of writing of it because it required me to articulate for myself what happened during the visit, and I discovered along the way that the piece was larger than just the visit itself.

Living With Dying In The Pediatric Icu: A Nursing Perspective, Debra Stayer
Living With Dying In The Pediatric Icu: A Nursing Perspective, Debra Stayer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Caring for critically ill children who die quickly or whose condition progressively worsens is often overwhelming with the journey to the end justly stressful and difficult for all involved. Unequivocally pediatric ICU nurses spend a significant amount of time at the bedside attempting to meet and manage the palliative care needs of the children and their families during this arduous time. However, the literature lacks the perspective of the pediatric ICU nurse who provides palliative care to children with a life-threatening or life-limiting illness and their families. Therefore, a hermeneutic phenomenological inquiry to explore the essence of the experience provided …

Evaluating New Radiation Technologies In Older Women With Early Stage Breast Cancer: Understanding The Role Of Hospital Ownership Status And Estimating Cost-Effectiveness, Sounok Sen
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
PART 1:
BACKGROUND: Because the benefits of adjuvant radiation therapy (RT) for breast cancer decrease with increasing age, the use of expensive and unproven RT modalities such as brachytherapy in the treatment of older women has been questioned. In particular, patients and policy makers may be concerned that for-profit hospitals might be more likely to use therapies with higher reimbursements. Among both younger and older Medicare beneficiaries with breast cancer, we examined whether hospital ownership status is associated with use of adjuvant brachytherapy.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of female Medicare beneficiaries aged 66-94 years old receiving breast-conserving surgery …

Acute Lung Injury And Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Requiring Tracheal Intubation And Mechanical Ventilation In The Intensive Care Unit: Impact On Managing Uncertainty For Patient-Centered Communication, Robert F. Johnson Jr., Jillian Gustin
Peer Reviewed Articles
A 56 year-old male presented with symptoms of pneumonia and findings consistent with acute lung injury (ALI). Deterioration of respiratory function occurred over the first 24 hours of hospitalization leading to placement in an intensive care unit (ICU) followed by tracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation (ETMV). At that time criteria defining acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) were present. The palliative medicine service was asked to address concerns expressed by the patient’s spouse reflecting uncertainty regarding outcome expectations.
When interacting with families of incapacitated critically ill patients, clinicians are advised to employ a patient-centered communication process to alleviate family distress and …

The Impact Of An Individual’S Spirituality On Communication In The Workplace, Priscilla Lynne Young, Guo-Ming Chen
The Impact Of An Individual’S Spirituality On Communication In The Workplace, Priscilla Lynne Young, Guo-Ming Chen
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
This study investigates how individuals practice spirituality in the workplace. Ethnographies are conducted of 20 full-time employees in a college who follow a religious or spiritual practice. Results illustrate individuals’ belief in and desire for connection. Participants believe that one’s religion or spirituality is central to one’s life, serving as a moral compass for behavior that impacts relationships with others and one’s relationship with a higher power or “source.” Participants’ spontaneous communication in the workplace is not always informed by their religiosity or spirituality, though they desire that it would be. More often than not, participants’ communication is mediated by …

You Can't Get There From Here: Elderly Prisoners, Prison Downsizing, And The Insufficiency Of Cost Cutting Advocacy, Elizabeth Rapaport
Faculty Scholarship
The prison population in the United States has peaked and begun to recede, reversing more than 30 years of growth. Mass incarceration is yielding to the imperative to reduce state budgets in recessionary times. As states turn away from the extravagant use of prison for nonviolent offenders, the percentage of the prison population serving long and life sentences for violent felonies will increase. By 2009 one in eleven prisoners were lifers. These are the prisoners growing old and dying in prison. High cost elderly prisoners who have aged out of crime should be good candidates for cost saving measures such …

The Forty-First George Eliot Memorial Lecture, 2012- Romola's Artists, Leonee Ormond
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
2012-2013 marks the one hundred and fiftieth birthday of Romola. Originally published in the Comhill Magazine from July 1862 to August 1863, it later appeared in a three volume edition in 1863. An illustrated edition followed in 1865.
George Eliot had begun work on the novel in 1861, when she was forty-one. She had recently published Silas Mamer, and The Mill on the Floss, preceded by Adam Bede, had come out not long before that. The genesis of Romola came in May 1860 when George Eliot and George Henry Lewes spent two weeks in Florence. Lewes noted that, …

A Holistic Approach To Planning For The Aging Same-Sex Couple: Special Considerations In Light Of The U.S. V. Windsor Decision, Melissa Lader Barnhardt, Jessica M. Lillesand, Denise A. Lettau
St. Thomas Law Review
On June 26, 2013, the US Supreme Court found Section 3 of the Federal Defense of Marriage Act' ("DOMA") unconstitutional. DOMA was signed into law in 1996 by President Clinton. DOMA came into existence as fears arose that the state of Hawaii would start a trend as the first state to recognize same-sex marriage. DOMA was created to avert "an assault against traditional heterosexual marriage laws." Now that this section has been struck down, married members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered ("LGBT") community will be privy to the same federal benefits that their heterosexual colleagues have historically enjoyed …

"Remember that what you possess in the world will be found at the day of your death to belong to some one else; but what you are, will be yours forever. "' -Henry Van Dyke.
Since the modem movement for patient autonomy began gathering steam in the 1900s, individual concerns about the purpose, nature, and quality of medical care have become a larger component of the practice of medicine. However, state and federal law has been relatively slow to respond, and establishment of the relevant legal framework is relatively recent. New Jersey courts led the charge with their decision in …
