Drug Trafficking Related Violence And Corruption Among Specific Populations In Mexico, Matthew B. Courtney
Drug Trafficking Related Violence And Corruption Among Specific Populations In Mexico, Matthew B. Courtney
Honors Theses
The trade of illegal narcotics through Mexico has resulted in the rise of powerful and organized criminal businesses that are not afraid to bribe, or kill, any who cross them. This has caused a dramatic increase in violent crime and government official corruption. This document will begin by defining these organizations and examining their creation. Next the violence caused by these organizations will be analytically categorized in order to better understand the criminal's motivations and tactics. This study will examine current data to determine which populations are more prone to violent crime or corruption by looking at the victims relationship …

Intimate Partner Violence And The Victim-Offender Overlap, Marie Skubak Tillyer, Emily M. Wright
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Objectives:
Examine the prevalence and correlates of intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization and offending, as well as the overlap of these experiences.Method:
Data from wave 4 of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health were analyzed to examine IPV among adults ages 24 to 33. A multinomial logistic regression model was estimated to determine whether the correlates of IPV vary across victims, perpetrators, and victim-perpetrators.Results:
Approximately 20% of respondents reported some IPV involvement in the past year, one-third of whom reported victimization and perpetration. The victim-offender overlap was observed for males and females across various measures of IPV. …Direct Training To Increase Inter-Rater Agreement Between An Observer’S And Teachers’ Self-Report Ratings Of Treatment Integrity, Lindsay M. Direct Training To Increase Inter-Rater Agreement Between An Observer’S And Teachers’ Self-Report Ratings Of Treatment Integrity, Lindsay M. Fallon Phd
Doctoral Dissertations
Measuring an implementer’s treatment integrity, specifically an implementer’s adherence to steps of an intervention, can be done via direct (e.g., observation) or indirect (e.g., self-report) methods of assessment. Direct observation is a widely used and accepted method of data collection in research due to its technical adequacy. However, direct observation is resource intensive, often making it impractical outside of research. Self-report measures of adherence can be less resource intensive and are commonly used in school settings, yet results from previous research indicate that implementers frequently overestimate their adherence when using self-report measures. To address this issue, results from research that …

Compromising Face-To-Face Confrontation: Does The Protected Child Witness Threaten Impartial Juror Decision-Making?, Rachel K. Darby
Scripps Senior Theses
The use of protective testimonial aids by the child witness has been advocated for as research indicates that it decreases witness stress and suggestibility; however, the use of such aids has also been attacked as incompatible with the defendant’s confrontational right and the fact-finding function of the jury. The present study examines the effects of testimony modality, as well as empathy-inducing closing arguments, on juror perceptions of the child witness, perceptions of the defendant, and ultimate judgments of guilt. In this between-subjects factorial study, workers on Amazon Mechanical Turk were invited to participate in an online simulated sexual assault case …

Child Maltreatment Prevention And Health Promotion: Examining The Effectiveness Of A Nurse Home-Visiting Program, Paul Lanier
Child Maltreatment Prevention And Health Promotion: Examining The Effectiveness Of A Nurse Home-Visiting Program, Paul Lanier
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Problem: Child abuse and neglect is a devastating, yet preventable, social problem. Early childhood home visiting services are currently considered the most promising approach to maltreatment prevention. Expansion of evidence-based home visiting services authorized by the Affordable Care Act has created a need to better understand the utilization and effectiveness of preventive services delivered in the community. Nurses for Newborns is a nurse home visiting program serving high-risk caregivers and medically-fragile newborns using a flexible, client-driven service model.
Methods: This study used longitudinal services data linked with administrative child welfare data. A sample of low-income families: n = 3,620) who …
