An Educational Transition: Post-Secondary Correctional Education - A Qualitative Case Study, Greg Bartholomew May 2013

An Educational Transition: Post-Secondary Correctional Education - A Qualitative Case Study, Greg Bartholomew

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Administration of post-secondary correctional education (PSCE) programs within state was vastly changed through legislation enacted in 2009. This study examined the transition of a PSCE system formerly facilitated by higher education to the current system administered by the State Department of Corrections (SDC). This qualitative case study involved multiple perspectives from five different stake-holding groups or five socials units: state legislators, county law enforcement personnel, university personnel, state higher education administrators, SDC personnel, and technical college personnel. A thick, rich description of the transition was obtained by relying on multiple perspectives offered by informants.

The stakeholders’ “display of multiple, refracted …

Comparison Of Stated Iron Concentrations Between Name Brand And Generic Children's Multivitamins, Ashlea Nicole Pettengill May 2013

Comparison Of Stated Iron Concentrations Between Name Brand And Generic Children's Multivitamins, Ashlea Nicole Pettengill

Master's Theses

The mineral iron is one of the most common minerals on Earth; not only is iron found in the atmosphere, water, and plants, it is an essential mineral needed for the human body. Children need iron at a young age to ensure proper growth and development of myelin, to promote oxygen transportation within red blood cells, and to assist in Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and Ribonucleic acid (RNA). With iron readily available in children's multivitamins, iron toxicity can become an issue when taking too many tablets. With two types of brands, generic and name brand, parents should be aware of the …

Human Trafficking: The Evil Happening Under Our Noses, Erika Lynn Dangler

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Human trafficking is a very interesting, dangerous, and unique topic to study. Sometimes people do not even believe that it actually exists and happens throughout the world. It is evident that this issue is a problem and needs to be brought to attention."

Fifty Years Before Brady, Colin Starger May 2013

Fifty Years Before Brady, Colin Starger

All Faculty Scholarship

In marking the fiftieth anniversary of Brady v. Maryland, a fitting way to appreciate the historic significance of Justice Douglas’ opinion for the Court is to turn back the pages another fifty years. Brady’s profound contribution to our criminal justice system becomes apparent by considering the impoverished state of the Supreme Court’s due process doctrine as it stood a century ago. In the fifty years that led up to Brady, the Court confronted a series of racially and politically charged cases that forced constitutional soul searching about due process in the face of rank injustice. The story of the Court’s …

Deviant Peers, Opportunity, And Cyberbullying: A Theoretical Examination Of A New Deviance, Charern Lee May 2013

Deviant Peers, Opportunity, And Cyberbullying: A Theoretical Examination Of A New Deviance, Charern Lee

Theses

Scholars of cybercrime have used social learning theory (SLT) and routine activities theory (RAT) to explain the variation in offending and victimization; however, to date, only RAT has been used to explain the specific behavior of cyberbullying. Therefore, this study combines SLT and RAT concepts to explain the cyberbullying phenomenon. Today's adolescents are exposed early to cyberspace and this has given them more opportunities to bully their peers, especially in an environment that is difficult to monitor by adults. The results from this study of a sample of Southeastern middle and high school students suggest that the opportunity component of …

Prison Policy In Times Of Austerity: Lessons From Ireland, Mary Rogan May 2013

Prison Policy In Times Of Austerity: Lessons From Ireland, Mary Rogan

Articles

The catastrophic collapse in the once booming Irish economy has led to swingeing budgets, huge falls in property prices, rising unemployment, cut backs in public services, and the ignominy of a bailout financed by the International Monetary Fund, the European Union and the European Central Bank. As has been the case for all aspects of public expenditure, prison policy-makers are now regularly using the language of efficiency and value for money when discussing plans for Ireland’s prisons. The state’s current economic woes are having some interesting effects on the direction of prison policy. Plans are afoot to reduce the prison …

To Conform Or Not To Conform: An Examination Of The Effects Of Mock Jury Deliberation On Individual Jurors, Ashley S. Bowser May 2013

To Conform Or Not To Conform: An Examination Of The Effects Of Mock Jury Deliberation On Individual Jurors, Ashley S. Bowser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The jury method is a unique social setting in the Criminal Justice system that provides opportunity for social influence to occur. Questions about the formation of jurors’ individual and collective decisions have stimulated a great deal of interest and research. This study is a review of the juror decision-making process and the various sources of influence that can affect it. Mock jurors were asked to review a mock criminal trial as well as the testimony of 2 witnesses. Upon reviewing the case, a predeliberation verdict (guilty or not guilty) and the degree of certainty of that decision was made. Once …

Life Inside The Spectacle: David Foster Wallace, George Saunders, And Storytelling In The Age Of Entertainment, John Hawkins May 2013

Life Inside The Spectacle: David Foster Wallace, George Saunders, And Storytelling In The Age Of Entertainment, John Hawkins

Masters Theses

This project explores George Saunders's In Persuasion Nation and David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest as interventionary literature. The thesis asserts that the two works confront the problems of isolation and dehumanization created by entertainment-based consumerism; they do so by depicting satirically exaggerated consumer societies and placing well-developed, sympathetic characters in those settings. The thesis includes a consideration of Jameson and deBord's theories of spectacle and Wallace's stated concerns with postmodern irony as an ineffective form of critique.

Implementing A Bystander Awareness Program On A University Campus, Robert Joseph Vadovic May 2013

Implementing A Bystander Awareness Program On A University Campus, Robert Joseph Vadovic

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Between 17% and 62% of college students experience some form of violence during their time at school. About 25% of female college students experience a sexual assault before graduating. One university had seen an increase in violence, including assaults and bias events. Administrators and nurses implemented a bystander awareness program to help alleviate this growing problem. Members of the college's residence life staff and its Greek organizations (fraternities and sororities) participated in the Step Up program, a prosocial training program to get people to intervene safely when witnessing acts of violence. Participants (N=236) completed surveys prior to the program, immediately …

Social Media Strategy For The Hank Greenspun School Of Journalism And Media Studies, Irene Williams

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Within the past 10 years, communication online has evolved tremendously toward social media. This rapid change has been difficult for higher education institutions (HEI) to adapt to, leaving this important area underexplored. This strategic social media plan was developed to improve internal and external communication for the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies (JMS). By initiating social media platforms, relationships are cultivated with present and future students on Facebook and Twitter. This strategic social media plan develops and maintains Facebook and Twitter pages for JMS and interprets social media site visitation data. These data provide information on users, …

Our Side Of The Fence: Investigating The New Nativism In The United States, Candace Griffith May 2013

Our Side Of The Fence: Investigating The New Nativism In The United States, Candace Griffith

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This study examines the new nativism movement in the United States. Specifically I look at groups who have formed in Arizona to combat illegal crossings over the U.S.-Mexico border. The new nativism arises from the perceived inability of the government to secure the border from illegal crossing. I draw on community policing and vigilante literatures to determine whether these groups could be considered a neighborhood watch or vigilante group. Using a sequential mixed method design, I conduct semi-structured interviews and engage in participate observation in the Sonoran desert with the Arizona Border Defenders, to identify how these groups label their …

Sex Worker Rights Organizing As Social Movement Unionism: Responding To The Criminalization Of Work, Crystal A. Jackson May 2013

Sex Worker Rights Organizing As Social Movement Unionism: Responding To The Criminalization Of Work, Crystal A. Jackson

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In a post-industrial, de-regulated economy, worker organizing is changing shape and function. While much research has focused on the decline of U.S. union organizing and the difficulty of organizing today's workers, a growing body of research on social movement unionism interrogates how "un-organizable" and "non-traditional" workers like day laborers and domestic workers are organizing. Yet sex worker activism in the U.S. is little studied, which is interesting given sex workers unique position as criminalized and contingent workers. Based on a two year ethnographic study from 2010 to 2012 of a national sex worker rights organization, the Desiree Alliance (DA), I …

Driving Forces: Factors Affecting Police Officer Injuries In Motor Vehicle Incidents In The United States, Carol Servino May 2013

Driving Forces: Factors Affecting Police Officer Injuries In Motor Vehicle Incidents In The United States, Carol Servino

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Traffic-related incidents were the leading cause of fatal injuries to officers in 14 of 15 years between 1997 and 2012. Vehicle crashes occur at the individual officer level, but chiefs are responsible for agency performance, creating and implementing police policy, and developing organizational culture. This quantitative survey research study draws from organizational culture theory and asks chiefs in state, county, and city police organizations what they believe are salient factors in crashes causing injuries and death to police officers in the United States. Independent variables include safety belt laws, written driving policies (including communication technology commonly used in police vehicles), …

Addressing Endogeneity Of Casino, Crime And Regional Economy: A Case Of Las Vegas, Nevada, Wei Bao May 2013

Addressing Endogeneity Of Casino, Crime And Regional Economy: A Case Of Las Vegas, Nevada, Wei Bao

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This paper presents an approach to investigate the statistical relationship among casino activities, crime rates and number of visitors in Las Vegas, NV. Numerous studies have attempted to answer the question whether casino gaming increases crime rates. Casino gaming is statistically correlated with more crimes when researchers use the reported crime rate, i.e., ratio of the number of crimes to local population. However, there is no statistical relationship between the two when researchers use the visitor adjusted crime rate (henceforth adjusted crime rate), i.e., ratio of the number of crimes to local population and visitors, in their analyses. Somewhat surprisingly, …

Family-Friendly Work Environment? An Investigation Of Women's Job Stress And Satisfaction, Nina Ciric May 2013

Family-Friendly Work Environment? An Investigation Of Women's Job Stress And Satisfaction, Nina Ciric

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Little research has focused on women with and without children in the workplace and their work-life balance. This study is conducted through the lens of organizational culture in order to determine how different workplace policies can influence women and their job satisfaction and level of job stress. The participants for this study included 172 female students and staff (working full and part time) from an institution of higher education in South Texas. Results showed no significant differences in women's job satisfaction or stress level at work, regardless of having children or not. However, there is a positive relationship between women's …

Study Of Students' Knowledge Of The Profession Of Graphic Design, Rachael C. Thomas May 2013

Study Of Students' Knowledge Of The Profession Of Graphic Design, Rachael C. Thomas

Honors Theses

Research, or rather the lack thereof, seems to indicate a lack of appreciation for graphic design, designers themselves, and the work they do in both the public and scholarly society. Without proper acknowledgement from the public and academia, graphic design as a profession is in danger of disappearing. The problem may stem from graphic design being a relatively new field if one is to think of it as really taking off with the invention of computers. This lack of understanding may also contribute to the absence of a single definition for graphic design. To address these concerns, this study will …

Differences In Latent Fingerprints Of Caucasian Children, Jessica D. Hill May 2013

Differences In Latent Fingerprints Of Caucasian Children, Jessica D. Hill

Honors Theses

It is already known that the latent fingerprints of adults and the latent fingerprints of prepubescent children are different from each other in chemical makeup. This study compares the latent fingerprints of prepubescent children to each other—specifically attempting to determine if there are any noticeable differences between the latent prints of Caucasian male and female children using the processing methods of ninhydrin and indane dione. The latent fingerprints included in the study were processed and graded. Two independent t-tests as well as a factorial ANOVA were performed on the acquired data. It was found that there is not a significant …

Effects Of Illegal Immigration Upon Crime In The United States, Christopher M. Necaise May 2013

Effects Of Illegal Immigration Upon Crime In The United States, Christopher M. Necaise

Honors Theses

The U. S. Government regularly compiles and publishes statistics involving crimes occurring in the United States, especially through the Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics (UCR) and the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). These publications can be used to search facts and figures with respect to crime, including by locale, type of crime and the race of the perpetrator, among others. Inexplicably, however, no data is provided with respect to whether the perpetrator has a legal or illegal immigration status or his/her ethnicity. This absence of objective data on crime and immigration has led to some with political agendas from both sides …

Representation Of Missing Children In National Television News, Clara Simmons May 2013

Representation Of Missing Children In National Television News, Clara Simmons

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examines how closely representations of missing children in television news reflect missing children statistics from "official" sources. The methodology used in this study was a content analysis of five national television news stations from 1987-2011 using the Vanderbilt Television News Archive. News segments were coded for race, gender, age, the situation of the disappearance, and the relationship of the victim to the offender. These proportions were then compared to the proportions provided by three official data sources: two from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and one from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). Some …

Counsel's Control Over The Presentation Of Mitigating Evidence During Capital Sentencing, James Michael Blakemore May 2013

Counsel's Control Over The Presentation Of Mitigating Evidence During Capital Sentencing, James Michael Blakemore

Michigan Law Review

The Sixth Amendment gives a defendant the right to control his defense and the right to a lawyer's assistance. A lawyer's assistance, however, sometimes interferes with a defendant's control over his case. As a result, the Supreme Court, over time, has had to delineate the spheres of authority that pertain to counsel and defendant respectively. The Court has not yet decisively assigned control over mitigating evidence to either counsel or defendant. This Note argues that counsel should control the presentation of mitigating evidence during capital sentencing. First, and most importantly, decisions concerning the presentation of mitigating evidence are best characterized …
