The Utilization Of A Service Learning Assignment In An Undergraduate Public Policy Course, Jacki Fitzpatrick
PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement
The purpose of this paper is to reflect upon the development of a service learning (SL) assignment in an undergraduate public policy course. The instructor completed a university-sponsored SL training program and then integrated SL into an extant course. The paper provides a brief overview of the (a) course topics, (b) SL planning process, (c) SL assignment, (d) reflection papers and (e) syllabus description of the SL assignment. The assignment has been implemented over several semesters. Across semesters, the purpose of the SL assignment remains focused on salience to course concepts. Thus, there is the potential that SL is a …

Recording Police Interrogations Has Worked -- And Should Be Expanded, Marc D. Falkoff
Recording Police Interrogations Has Worked -- And Should Be Expanded, Marc D. Falkoff
College of Law Faculty Publications
Legislation to expand the use of audio and video recordings of police interrogations of criminal suspects is now pending in the Illinois General Assembly. As originally conceived, the bills would modify the current statute requiring police to record interrogation of homicide suspects, further obliging them to tape interrogations of all felony suspects. The legal community – from police to prosecutors to defense lawyers – should embrace the reforms. The bills would enhance the reliability of criminal trials, deter harsh and abuse interrogations and squelch frivolous claims of abuse by criminal defendants. Moreover, the reforms will save the state money.

Gender Role Construction Among Men And Women Of Color, Marie L. Miville, Lucinda Bratini, Melissa J. Corpus, Manuel A. Diaz
Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
In this chapter, we present some of the current thinking mental health professionals have used to study gender and gender roles. Our review of the literature is not meant to be comprehensive or exhaustive but instead to highlight important theoretical constructs and findings that formed the empirical basis of our interview project. We also describe the research methodology we used in conducting our interviews, constructive grounded theory (CGT), which helped us analyze our data for common themes among our interview participants.

Latina Gender Roles, Lucinda Bratini, Marilyn C. Ampuero, Marie L. Miville
Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
This chapter seeks to understand the meanings that Latinas today construct about gender and gender roles. We interviewed 10 Latinas living in the United States, using the data analytic procedures outlined in Chapter 1. Participants were residents of either New York City or California, where the authors reside. A core narrative of how Latinas experience and understand gender and gender roles emerged from our analyses, Latinas in the process of transformation and negotiating roles, and encompassed three key themes: (a) Latina socialization, (b) identity constructs, and (c) from internalized ideals to one's own values.

The Era Of Open-Ended Dual Life, Hirosuke Hyodo

Although missing in mainstream studies of American immigration in the post-1965 Act era, the volume of native Japanese living in the U.S. today (called the shin-issei) is three times that of the prewar Japanese-American community on the U.S. mainland. Their curious absence from the mainstream studies results from the traditionally entrenched frame, ‘immigrants’, that does not unfit their migrant patterns. This paper explores the shin-issei, portraying their characters in three parts: (1) akogare (‘longing or desire’) for the West grown in Japan in the late nineteenth century, (2) a statistical sketch of the shin-issei over the last several decades, and …

Access To Tax Injustice, Francine J. Lipman
Access To Tax Injustice, Francine J. Lipman
Pepperdine Law Review
Every morning, Monday through Friday, school children across the United States raise their voices in unison and pledge allegiance to America, with liberty and justice for all. America, in turn, pledges to these children and the world that it is a nation of liberty, justice, and laws. Laws drafted by representatives intended to follow through on America’s promise of liberty and justice for all. Yet for more than 16 million of these children and 30 million adults living in poverty in 2011, America does not deliver on its promise of justice. In a recent global study, America ranked 27th out …

Robust Multidimensional Welfare Comparisons: One Vector Of Weights, One Vote, Stergios Athanassoglou
Robust Multidimensional Welfare Comparisons: One Vector Of Weights, One Vote, Stergios Athanassoglou
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Many aspects of social welfare are intrinsically multidimensional. Composite indices at-tempting to reduce this complexity to a unique measure abound in many areas of economics and public policy. Comparisons based on such measures depend, sometimes critically, on how the different dimensions of performance are weighted. Thus, a policy maker may wish to take into account imprecision over composite index weights in a systematic manner. In this paper, such weight imprecision is parameterized via the ε-contamination framework of Bayesian statistics. Subsequently, combining results from polyhedral geometry, social choice, and theoretical computer science, an analytical procedure is presented that yields a provably …
