The Metropolitan Dimensions Of United States Immigration Policy: A Theoretical And Comparative Analysis, Nicole G. Toussaint May 2013

The Metropolitan Dimensions Of United States Immigration Policy: A Theoretical And Comparative Analysis, Nicole G. Toussaint

Dissertations and Theses

Municipal unauthorized immigration policy, as an area of study, is underexplored. The literature is in the early stages of development, and little specific theory to guide research exists. To advance this emerging field, my study addresses two questions. First, what unauthorized immigration policies do local governments pursue, under what circumstances, and for what reasons? Second, what explains city-to-city variation in municipal responsiveness to the policy preferences and interests of residents without legal status?

The dissertation also presents a typology of municipal responsiveness to unauthorized immigrants, based on my exploratory research. To explain intercity differences in the policy processes and choices …

An Exploratory Ethnography Of The Gendered Communicative Behaviors Of Bouncers, Nathan M. Swords May 2013

An Exploratory Ethnography Of The Gendered Communicative Behaviors Of Bouncers, Nathan M. Swords

The Hilltop Review

This research study focuses on combining my interests in interpersonal communication and organizational communication, and work experience as club security. Specifically, the research explores the communicative behaviors of club security (i.e., bouncers) in two different situational contexts, specifically those based on population and demographic composition. The communicative behaviors of bouncers were explored in two specific contexts in the Midwest: (1) a college town with mid-size city population, and (2) an urban center of one of the largest cities in the U.S. Utilizing an ethnographic methodological approach – as a participant-observer– as the primary data source, a commitment of 32 hours …

The Olive Branch Program : A Proposal For Outreach To Survivors Of Trauma Highlighting The Restorative Potential Of Nature-Based Cultural Settings, Mariana I. Swick

Graduate Student Independent Studies

Addresses the long-term implications of sexual assault-related trauma on the lives of women survivors and demonstrates how nature-based cultural institutions can support the needs of this population throughout recovery. The study proposes the adoption of The Olive Branch Program (a hypothetical outreach program) by local nature-based cultural institutions in light of the long term needs of women survivors on various pathways towards recovery. In addition, the study proposes ways for cultural institutions to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration, address issues of accessibility, and offer socially relevant programming.

Racial Inequality In Special Education And The Need For Cultural Competence, Nicole Rosado

Graduate Student Independent Studies

For many years, schools in the United States have been dealing with the persistent overrepresentation of students of color in special education. The research suggests a variety of causes for this epidemic. Costs Of Capital Punishment In California: Will Voters Choose Reform This November?, Judge Arthur L. Alarcón, Paula M. Mitchell May 2013

Costs Of Capital Punishment In California: Will Voters Choose Reform This November?, Judge Arthur L. Alarcón, Paula M. Mitchell

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

In November 2012, California voters took to the polls to consider Proposition 34, a ballot initiative to replace the death penalty with a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole (“LWOP”) as the state’s most severe punishment. In advance of the election, Judge Arthur L. Alarcón and Paula M. Mitchell released this Article, which the Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review published on its website on September 10, 2012.

In this Article, the authors updated voters on the findings presented in their groundbreaking 2011 study, which revealed that from 1978 to 2011, California’s death-penalty system cost the …

Sexual Assault And Sane (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners) In Our Community, Emily Barrow May 2013

Sexual Assault And Sane (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners) In Our Community, Emily Barrow

Honors Theses

Sexual assault and sexual violence is a problem in our society, with one in four college women report surviving rape (15 percent) or attempted rape (12 percent) since their fourteenth birthday, and about 42% of survivors did not tell anyone about their rape. Research on the subject is being done and information in a special report, Extent, Nature, and Consequences of Rape Victimization: Findings from the National Violence Against Women Survey (NVAWS), conducted by American Prosecutors Research Institute and Boston College Connell School of Nursing, exposes some alarming statistics. The study reveals that over half of female victims and nearly …

Innocence Found: Retribution, Capital Punishment, And The Eighth Amendment, Judith M. Barger May 2013

Innocence Found: Retribution, Capital Punishment, And The Eighth Amendment, Judith M. Barger

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Although a majority of the United States Supreme Court theoretically accepts that the state-sanctioned killing of a factually innocent person is unconstitutional, it has been reluctant to announce a workable standard for individuals raising postconviction freestanding claims of actual innocence in capital cases. This Article explores how such claims should be addressed. It begins by examining the distinctions the Court has drawn between freestanding claims of innocence and those asserted in connection with other constitutional violations. Although the Court theoretically recognized the former in Herrera v. Collins, it has failed to articulate a clear standard to govern these claims, and …

"Terrorism" In The Age Of Obama: The Rhetorical Evolution Of President Obama’S Discourse On The War On "Terror", Kelly Long

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Since September 11th, 2001, the word “terrorism” has helped to shape and been shaped by the culture of the American people who have come into contact with this concept on a daily basis. The use of “terrorism” and its companion the War on “Terror” carried with it certain ideological baggage that has serve as a prism in which the American people have viewed United States’ foreign affairs over the past decade. The fight against “terrorism” offered a pre-text for the U.S. to engage in two different wars, administrated a policy of hunting and killing “terrorists” across the globe, constructed policies …

Ex-Prisoners' Perceptions Of The Availability And Effects Of Services In Correctional Settings, Jenna Houston May 2013

Ex-Prisoners' Perceptions Of The Availability And Effects Of Services In Correctional Settings, Jenna Houston

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The U.S. system of retributive justice drives punitive measures, rather than interventions that could reduce recidivism. If prisoners’ needs are not met while serving time within the penal system, their chances of re-offending are greater (Baillargeon, 2010). The purpose of this study was to gather information about correctional programming from male ex-prisoners who have been involved in community re-entry services at Span Inc. in Boston, MA. Furthermore, this study also examined whether or not the programming contributed to positive coping skills during their incarceration as well as to their adaptation upon reentering the community. Data was collected by conducting ten …
